WELCOME TO OUR TOWN Family fun at the Bloom Festival

Clowning around at the Corn Festival

Shippensburg University

Welcome to Shippensburg, a gateway community of the Cumberland Valley. We are second to York as the oldest permanent settlement west of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Since our beginnings, we have been a transportation and agricultural center responsible for supplying much needed supplies and services to our growing nation. The rail centers located here sent farm and manufactured goods throughout the nation. We continue today by supplying construction equipment, agricultural crops, dairy products, and other unique items for the daily business of the country. It is difficult to travel throughout the country and even the world without coming across someone from Shippensburg who has added to the quality of life for people. In the last third of the nineteenth century, we also became an educational center providing an endless supply of teachers who guaranteed the future of the United States as a world leader. There’s really something infectious about Shippensburg. We truly hope you catch it and join us by becoming a part of the beat in the heart of the Cumberland Valley. Experiencing History in Shippensburg The history of Shippensburg is a long one dating all the way back to the 1730s. When the town was settled, it was the very first in the Cumberland Valley and only the second in all of Pennsylvania west of the Susquehanna River. In the years that followed, the people and places of Shippensburg left a lasting influence on the area which can still be seen today. The Shippensburg story very conveniently can be divided into three phases, each represented by its own century. The 1700s saw the arrival of European people and the development of the Shippensburg 2

a continued development of the themes from both the 1700s and 1800s, and resulted in the small town community that still thrives today.

Prior to the year 1738, the European settlers of Shippensburg had no legal ownership of the land in So who were the people which they resided. The American Frontier had moved beyond Shippensburg by the time we move into the 1800s, but Shippensburg still had a role to play in the westward expansion. Shippensburg was a transportation hub of the time and was located along several important railways: The Cumberland Valley Railroad, the Western Maryland Railroad, and the Philadelphia-Reading Railroad. Traveling through the heart of Pennsylvania often meant traveling through Shippensburg. The 1800s also saw some very notable events happen in Shippensburg. June 24th of 1863 saw the arrival of the Confederate Army under the command of General Albert Jenkins on their way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The town was occupied for a period of 3 days. The 1800s also saw the beginning of Shippensburg University, which was founded in 1871. The administrative center of campus, Old Main, has been standing since 1871.

Shippensburg in the 1900s The 1900s continued industrial growth in the area that had originally begun in the 1800s. Businesses like the Domestic Pump and Engine Company, Peerless Furniture Company, and the Beistle Company all brought economic prosperity and industrial production to the area. The tradition has carried on to this day as Beistle has continued its operations in Shippensburg and Volvo has moved its North American headquarters to the area.

to Shippensburg, but continued with its small town charms. As the town expanded there was the development of small neighborhood schools and groceries which meant everyone knew everyone else within their own pocket

of the community. Although many of those small schools and stores are no longer in operation, the communityfeel that they brought the area has continued to thrive.

Economic growth in the area brought more people

Shippensburg Today The history of Shippensburg has woven itself into the very identity of the Community, and it’s a tradition which is set to continue for many more years to come. What will be the next big defining moment of our history? That’s for all of us Shippensburg residents to decide!

Touching History in Shippensburg

Unfortunately, there is no time machine that we can climb in, set the dial to a year gone by, and push a button which will send us back to a time when Shippensburg’s founding fathers walked the streets and women graced them in their beautiful, long skirts. We can, however, go to the places significant to the town’s past and try to imagine how things may have been. We can visit the homes of men who led others into battle to preserve the United States of America, view buildings that once housed thriving businesses and learn what the proprietors did to protect Shippensburg from the invading Confederate army. And we can walk through the final resting places of those who helped to build and grow Shippensburg. May it inspire us to do our part to continue the work they started, making Shippensburg a wonderful place to live and raise a family that it is today. Want to know more? Drop by the Shippensburg Historical Society to learn more of the town’s history. It is housed in the former home of a prominent doctor who worked to keep the citizenry in good health.

Beginning in the 1830’s the Cumberland Valley Railroad provided transportation for people and supplies between Harrisburg and Hagerstown, Maryland. The railroad tracks ran down the center of present day Earl Street. The Union Army relied on the Cumberland Valley Railroad to quickly transport ammunition to its troops during the Civil War, although the railroad suffered damaged during the Confederate invasion of 1863. Just south of Shippensburg, the Cumberland Valley Railroad’s Scotland Bridge was destroyed. ****************************************************************

Pennsylvania, Governor Robert Morris commissioned the construction of two stockade forts, one in Carlisle and one in Shippensburg. Fort Morris was one of a line of frontier defenses erected to protect local settlers and garrison provincial troops. While the location of the fort at Carlisle is well-documented, there has been much confusion over the location of Shippensburg’s small fort. For over one hundred years local historians have argued about this topic without reaching a consensus, so there are now three locations centered around the debate of Fort Morris’ site”. ****************************************************************

The Widow Agle, one of approximately 200,000 women who lost their husbands during the Civil War, supported her family through sewing and tailoring in the log cabin her husband’s brothers had built to house the widow and her sons. Two years after her husband’s death she was able to receive a monthly federal widow’s pension of $8.00. While most are Pennsylvania residents, Ship has also attracted students from 15 nations and 20 other states. Why such global appeal? We’re different from other schools. All classes are taught by faculty members, not graduate assistants. Our student-to-faculty ratio is 20 to 1, allowing for personalized instruction. And many of our undergraduate and graduate programs are recognized nationally for their excellence. In fact, U.S. News & World Report rated Ship as a top university in the north in its book “America’s Best Colleges 2012.” It was named one of the 100 best values among public colleges in “Kiplinger’s Personal Finance”. Shippensburg’s John L. Grove College of Business has maintained an AACSB accreditation since 1981. In addition to the university being recognized overall, Grove College was again recognized in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Undergraduate Business Programs” category. The college was ranked 309 out of 655 undergraduate programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). At Ship, we also nurture more than young minds. We nurture healthy lifestyles at our fully equipped recreation center, and our on-site childcare center nurtures children of students and staff with superior care provided by certified teachers. These are just a few of the many reasons why students from around the world and prominent faculty are coming aboard Ship. www.shippensburg.org

Go ahead, sign-up the little ones and support their efforts, win or lose. Shippensburg is a town in love with learning, and we nurture that relationship at our community library. We have open doors: They are open 60 hours a week to the entire community, and last year alone we had over 100,000 visits. We have programs galore:Over 900 programs attended by over 20,000 people. Our best-known program is our summer reading program, in which over 500 children and teens participate. The summer reading program helps students maintain their levels of learning over the summer. And it’s a lot of fun! The library is located in the former Dr. George Stewart residence at 73 W. King Street, just down the street from the Chamber of Commerce. We offer internet access, both wireless and wired, as well as all that goes with it - copying, printing. And don’t forget our staff! They’re the best, and they will help you find what you need here in Shippensburg or from elsewhere. Come see us! We would love to help you learn. www.shippensburg.org

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday 9-9, Tuesday 12-9, Friday 9-5, Saturday 10-5.

During the time of the Roman Empire, the excellent road system it established radiated from the capital like the spokes of a wheel, which birthed the saying that all roads lead to Rome. Shippensburg cannot make the same claim, but the excellent road system which passes through the Cumberland Valley, i.e. Interstate 81, going north and south, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I76), going east to west, will connect you to just about anywhere you want to go.

About Our Town - Happening

Perhaps the best kept secret about Shippensburg is that its residents enjoy the atmosphere of a small town, rural community with the benefits of city shopping and activities close at hand. They can drive to a nearby city, enjoy its museums, restaurants, specialty shops, professional sports games, arts and culture and still come home and sleep in their own bed at night. Nestled half way between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, a three hour drive will get you to the birthplace of America and the Liberty Bell, as well as the Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. A mere two hour drive on I-81 south and I-70 west takes you to Baltimore with its beautiful Inner Harbor and Fort McHenry and Washington D.C., the seat of our federal government and home of the Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial Monuments, the Smithsonian string of museums and the White House. If you want to support one of Pennsylvania’s favorite football teams at Penn State, the drive to State College is a hop, skip and a jump over Nittany Mountain for the game. If you are looking to take in the latest new Broadway show or visit the 9-11 Memorial Site and Museum, the drive is about 4.5 hours. However, perhaps the best way to see New York City is by catching Amtrak or a Greyhound bus out of Harrisburg. You could also join an organized bus trip from the area.

The roads from Shippensburg not only lead you to the cities, but also to other places for rest and relaxation, such as the Laurel Highlands, the Pocono Mountains, the land of the Endless Mountains in the north central part of the state, and Presque Isle, located along Lake Erie. Pennsylvania has much to offer and being located in the south central part of the state, nothing is too far out of reach. After a short drive on I-81, you cross the MasonDixon Line which divided the North from the South during the Civil War. It also is the state line between Pennsylvania and Maryland. You will feel like you are state-hopping as you continue down I-81, passing through West Virginia and Virginia. The I-81 corridor gives you access to so many wonderful opportunities for vacationing, taking in historical events and whatever else you can think of. From the time the first Native Americans settled around Dykeman Spring, they decided that this area would be a great location for their settlement. When the early pioneers arrived, they too checked out the surrounding location and decided it superb, and they built their town here from the ground up. Today, it is again all about location, location, location. And Shippensburg has it all.

Appalachian Trail

Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

The halfway point of the 2,180 milelong Appalachian Trail, which runs from Maine to Georgia, is located a short drive from Shippensburg, close to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Cumberland Valley’s portion of the Appalachian Trail is the flattest, easiest portion of the entire trail and the whole family can experience easy day hikes with scenic terrain and conveniently located parking lots. Or make it a weekend by extending your trip and stay like an A.T. thru-hiker at the Ironmaster’s Mansion. This historic mansion has been a hiker hostel over the years and also serves as a unique special event and wedding location.

A great place for biking is the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. This 11mile trail follows a flat, abandoned railroad track from Newville to Shippensburg through scenic farmland and rolling hills. It has been designated as a National Recreation Trail and is great for wildlife observation and history enthusiasts. Interpretive signage details the agricultural and Civil War significance of the area.

Fishing and Hunting

The Cumberland Valley and surrounding mountains are teeming with wildlife and the streams and creeks are popular with local fishermen. In fact, there are so many hunters in the area that Across the street from the Ironmaster’s Mansion is the Appalachian Trail Museum, local schools are closed on the first day of antlered deer season. It is like an which is housed in a structure built more than 200 years ago as a grist mill. It stands additional holiday on the Monday after Thanksgiving. But deer isn’t the only across the road from the Pine Grove General Store, a site famed in hiker lore. It thing that is hunted. Turkey, grouse, is here that trail hikers traditionally stop to pheasant, duck, squirrel, rabbit, doves celebrate reaching the midpoint by eating and the occasional black bear are all - or attempting to eat - a half gallon of ice game for the hunter. cream in one sitting.
