PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE To say it has been an unusual year is an understatement. 2020 brought about a unique set of circumstances with COVID-19. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, students, faculty, and staff at CVCC rose to the occasion and hit every obstacle head-on. From quickly transitioning to 100 percent online format at the onset to hosting drive-thru registration, everyone rolled up their sleeves and adjusted to ensure student success.

As you flip through these pages, you will see stories of triumph, courage, selflessness, hard work, and pure joy. Get inspired by Randy Murphy, Jr. who went from earning a GED from CVCC many years ago, to returning to the College and graduating at the top of the class. Gain insight into College initiatives like Project SENSE (Strategies to Enhance New Student Engagement). This project was made possible with a $1.8 million Federal grant and includes the implementation of excellent student services such as success coaches and tutoring enhancements. Much has happened over the past year, and there are more exciting things on the horizon like the expansion of our campus as we have acquired the Adams Building (formerly of Troy University Phenix City Campus) just across the street from our current campus administrative building. We are excited about renovating the building to better accommodate our students’ needs.

CVCC SUPPORTS STUDENTS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC Aurelia Smith wears several hats at Chattahoochee Valley Community College. She serves as a Computer Information Systems (CIS) Instructor, Online Learning Coordinator, and Blackboard Administrator. She’s used to being flexible in her work while juggling different projects simultaneously, but like everyone else, she never expected anything like the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, she had to respond quickly to transition CVCC to functioning completely online.

“It was a lot of work to get the online classes going, but when I think of how at one time, I wanted to be a nurse, I realize this is a lot less stressful in comparison to what our medical providers are going through now. I salute them,” Smith stated.

Students like Alana Joseph know first-hand how instructors have made the difference in getting through this trying time. She expressed that when the campus first closed its doors in mid-March, she was “devastated.”

“I went from being on campus four days a week, to not coming at all,” she said. “I am not the best online student, so I was worried that I would miss due dates and that my

In addition to the instructors’ revisions to classroom delivery, the College developed and implemented a modified service delivery plan to address everything from advising to doing classwork. The College also created a COVID-19 response team, developed a COVID-19 Web page, and created a YouTube video that creatively and humorously emphasized the steps for virtual advisement and summer registration.

Additionally, CVCC continues its support of the community.

The Health Sciences and Public Safety departments donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Russell County

Emergency Management Agency to help with the shortage.

“I’m extremely proud of the work CVCC is doing amid this unprecedented time for our students and the community as a whole,” said President Jackie Screws. “Challenges like these test us in ways we could have never imagined, and CVCC continues to pass the test.”

CVCC STUDENTS GET COVID-19 FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Students at Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) received funds to help them in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The College was awarded $822,858 in federal funds through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funding provided emergency cash grants to college students who were impacted by the movement of courses to an online format due to the Coronavirus. Spring semester students were permitted to use the funds to help cover the cost related to the transition.

“We have seen first-hand how our students have been affected by this pandemic,” said President Jackie Screws.

“They were challenged to quickly make the transition to all online classes and often with limited resources. I’m proud that our faculty and staff worked hard to fill in the gaps to provide what our students need to be successful, but this money will certainly help ease some of the burden our students feel as they work to better themselves through

education.”

CVCC provided eligible students who were enrolled in spring classes grant awards. Public colleges and universities throughout the United States received federal funding based on the number and percentage of students who were eligible for federal Pell Grants in the most recent academic year, not including students only taking online courses.

“These funds mean a lot,” expressed CVCC Student Amanda Meade, who graduated in May. “I’m a wife and mother of two, and juggling to stay on track with my classes while making sure my children were on track with their school work had its challenges, especially with everyone working from home unexpectantly. I am grateful to my instructors who have helped me along the way, and I am truly thankful to be able to use these funds.”

RESILIENCE IN ACTION – COVID-19 RESPONSE

CLASS OF 2020 GRADUATION GOES VIRTUAL Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) was proud to honor the graduating class of 2020 with a virtual commencement on Friday, August 7. It was the perfect opportunity for all to enjoy the celebration from the comfort of their own homes.

Kenneth Kelly, Chairman and CEO of First Independence Bank of Detroit, Michigan, provided the keynote address.

“We felt this was the safest option for our graduates while still honoring them in a grand way,” said Dr. Tim Harrison, Dean of Students and College Services. “This year has been unique for everyone, and the perseverance that this graduating class has shown is beyond measure.”

The celebration included a video montage of the campus, the singing of the National Anthem by the CVCC choir, special greetings from Mayor Eddie Lowe, the conferring of degrees, and a special slideshow in which each graduate was recognized.

A touching moment of the ceremony included the recognition of Phenix City Assistant Police Chief Gail GreenGilliam, who recently passed away. College officials describe Green-Gilliam as a member of the CVCC Pirate family who worked tirelessly to achieve an associate degree in criminal justice and also faithfully served as a member of the CVCC Career Technical Education Advisory Board.

Kelly focused his remarks on what he called the three C’s: Confidence, Challenge, and Character. He emphasized that the students had demonstrated the confidence needed to be successful and that they definitely faced challenges head-on with many having to complete their coursework during the pandemic.

He also emphasized the importance of character and that everyone is known for their character and belief system.

“You have done and made your families proud,” he said. “You are creating a legacy for yourself and for CVCC. I challenge you to give back by giving of your time, your talent, and your treasures.”

Kelly is chairman of the board of MAC Leasing, an equipment leasing company based in Michigan. In April 2020, he assumed the position of chairman of the Auburn University Engineering Alumni Council. In September 2019, the College of Engineering academic excellence reception area was named in his honor. Mr. Kelly was also awarded the Auburn University Distinguished Engineer Award in 2014, and he established an endowment for minority engineering students from his hometown of Eufaula, Alabama.

Kelly earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and earned his executive M.B.A. degree from the University of Alabama. He is married to Dr. Kimberly Lang Kelly of Mobile, Alabama, and is the father of two children Kerra Alexis and Kenneth Alexander II.

RESILIENCE IN ACTION – COVID-19 RESPONSE CVCC HOSTS DRIVE-THRU EVENT Due to COVID-19, Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) modified its annual bus tour and invited the community to pull up and learn more about the College drive-thru style this past summer! The event was designed to provide an opportunity to experience all that CVCC has to offer by driving through campus and pausing at different tent stations to gather information for fall registration.

Faculty and staff were stationed at each tent to share information about programs of study, financial aid, and other resources at the College. The event took place in the parking lot of the state-of-the-art Industrial and Performing Arts Center (IPAC), located at the front of campus.

Potential students had the opportunity to apply on site as well as talk one-on-one with staff to get their questions answered. There were giveaways, including t-shirts and several scholarship opportunities.

INSTRUCTOR AND MOM MAKE MASKS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Christine Cannon and her mom, Lisa, knew they wanted to help their community by making masks in the midst of COVID-19. Cannon says it all started when her cousin, who is an emergency room registered nurse, asked if she would make some for her and some of her colleagues.

“After that, other people I know started reaching out to me through social media,” said Cannon. “They work in high contact jobs, everything from the nursing field to food service. We aren’t selling them. We just mail them out in batches as they are finished.”

Cannon is an art instructor and the Division Chair for Fine Arts and Social Science at Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC). She says she’s been making things with her hands for as long as she can remember, and growing up, her mom always encouraged her creativity.

“It kept me busy and quiet,” she said with a laugh. “I have been studying art most of my life, and I like to call myself a habitual maker. I just love working on things and making stuff.”

Cannon and her mom have made about 100 masks made of cotton with pleated layers and elastic loops sewn on the ends. She considers it to be a small gesture, but she hopes every little bit is making a difference. Masks are being made all over the country to help fill a need as hospitals are dealing with shortages in protective gear. Cannon feels like she is giving back to her community while also coping with the pandemic.

“Making masks makes me feel a little less helpless,” she said. “I am also painting. I paint whether I am really happy or really stressed, so I always have a few paintings I am working on in rotation. I have started a new series I call my pandemic paintings. They are flowers growing from garbage. It is a way to remind myself that even with the overwhelming weight of the pandemic, there is some beauty to be found. I may just need to sort through a few things to find it.”

Cannon also encouraged her students to express what they are feeling during this historical time. In her painting class, she asked students to make their final painting about their quarantine experience — the good, the bad, and the ugly.

“It is really important to have an outlet to process the emotions and experiences you are living in a moment of history, and we should do something to mark this moment,” she said.

Chattahoochee Valley Community College partnered with Auburn University of Montgomery (AUM) on a new articulation agreement. The arrangement was signed and finalized by AUM Chancellor Carl A. Stockton and CVCC President Jackie Screws on January 28,2020.

CVCC SIGNS ARTICULATION AGREEMENT WITH AUBURN AT MONTGOMERY Students at Chattahoochee Valley Community College now have access to scholarships and other opportunities at Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) thanks to a new agreement.

Students transferring from CVCC with a cumulative grade point average between 3.0 and 3.49 will receive a $1,000 per year scholarship, and students with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher will receive $2,500 per year. There’s no limit to the number of transfer students who may receive the scholarship money.

Students are also eligible for AUM’s Presidential Scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees. It will be awarded to one CVCC transfer student each year.

The articulation agreement signed by AUM Chancellor Carl Stockton and CVCC President Jackie Screws on January 28, 2020, guarantees admission to AUM for students who meet specific requirements; such as earning an associate degree in arts or science while maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher in core courses during their time at CVCC. Leaders of both colleges praised the opportunities this shared partnership creates for students.

“This agreement is one of several that we are aggressively seeking to offer students opportunities to transfer seamlessly to a four-year college in the state of Alabama,” said CVCC President Jackie Screws.

MILESTONES CVCC AND LOCAL CHAMBER CELEBRATE NEW TECHNOLOGY AQUISITION

On January 15, 2020, Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) in partnership with the East Alabama Chamber of Commerce celebrated the installation of two new computer labs with a ribbon cutting and open house.

The College has incorporated new technology to offer students a more hands-on approach to learning. With the help of Vizitech Solutions, the College has two new computer labs with zSpace computers. These computers change the way students learn by providing 3D, augmented reality, and virtual reality learning programs and technology.

Each virtual reality desktop computer with 3D glasses and a stylus allows students to interact with a virtual object or environment.

“Learning through this kind of technology allows students the capability to apply what they learn in real-life settings,” stated Dr. Bridgett Jackson, Health Sciences Director. “They can dissect different anatomy that may be included in their lesson. It gives them a real-life depiction of what can go wrong, and then they can better understand the disease processes that may occur.”

Jackson says the labs are used throughout the Health Sciences program with nursing and medical assisting students. The new technology is also being utilized through the Science Department. The science lab is set up to be used with all biology, chemistry, and physical sciences courses.

“The Science Department is very fortunate to have the

Vizitech lab at CVCC,” said Merry Cuervo, Science Division Chair. “It adds another dimension of instruction for our students. They are able to visualize more with the 3D technology than before with our other lecture and laboratory experiences.”

Chattahoochee Valley Community College received a $250,000 grant from the Alabama Community College System to implement the labs. The College was one of two in the system to receive the funds. College administrators say the new technology also helps students to better transition from the local K-12 schools that use the same resources.

“With Phenix City Schools already using this technology, it was essential that CVCC have a zSpace to continue the interactive learning experience that these students have experienced in their secondary education,” explained Dr. Chantae Calhoun, Dean of Instruction. “Now they experience the technology on a collegiate level. Working in partnership with our feeder schools that use this resource is a plus for everyone.”

The ribbon cutting included remarks from Mayor Eddie Lowe and was attended by Senator Billy Beasley, Representative Berry Forte, Councilman Robert Day, and other local community leaders. The activities included an interactive demonstration in which attendees had an opportunity to try the technology first-hand.

MILESTONES ACCS ASPIRE 2030 ACCS Asprie 2030 is an Alabama Community College system-wide initiative in which all 24 institutions will develop ten-year capital improvement plans. Throughout the summer and fall 2020 terms, President Jackie Screws led the charge and initiated stakeholder meetings to hear from internal and external voices throughout the Chattahoochee Valley area. A strategic plan for renovation and infrastructure needs was then developed based on the feedback from those various meetings.

“Hearing from all of our stakeholders was the best part,” said Screws. “It’s important to get input from various perspectives: students, faculty, staff, and community and business partners.”

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PROGRAM RECEIVES ACCREDITATION Chattahoochee Valley Community College is proud to announce the Alabama Department of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has accredited and recognized the College’s EMS program as being in compliance with all established rules and regulations set forth by its office. The status is effective immediately and is valid until October 31, 2024.

The official site visit report reads, “Overall, the team was very satisfied that CVCC provides a quality education for those seeking an education in the field of EMS. The program offers more than adequate facilities and equipment. This team recommended the approval of accreditation by the OEMS.” The report includes potential for growth and accolades for the EMS program’s leadership and staff. EMS Lead Instructor Mark Boisclair said he is excited about the future of the program.

“The accreditation helps propel us forward as we look to the future of our program,” said Boisclair. “We are expanding our curriculum offerings in the spring 2021 to include Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) as part of the EMS program. The course is currently offered only in continuing education. There is such great opportunity to expand, and we hope to be able to share other additions soon.”

“This is excellent news for CVCC,” said President Screws.

“We are positioned to provide opportunities for students interested in this growing field, and we are grateful to

the Alabama Department of Public Health Office of EMS for recognizing our program’s value and importance. We truly provide quality instruction, and it is evident in our accreditation success.”

CVCC offers short certificates in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Advanced EMT upon successful completion of program requirements. These EMS certificate programs are designed to provide specialized skill sets for immediate employment, to upgrade skills for job advancement, or to earn a degree in Fire Science. The certificate programs can be completed within one to two semesters, and all of the certificate courses can be applied toward the Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science.

EXTERNAL RESOURCES CVCC AWARDED $1.8 M FEDERAL GRANT

Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) students will soon have additional resources to support them in their college and career journey thanks to a federal grant. The College recently received notice that the U.S. Department of Education had awarded it a five-year $1.8 million Title III Grant.

The grant will be utilized to implement Project SENSE (Strategies to Enhance New Student Engagement). Project SENSE was designed with an overarching goal of enhancing student success, persistence, graduation and transfer rates through a comprehensive framework featuring success coaches, an enhanced first-year college experience, and support services for the highest-risks students at the College.

The project will also provide tutoring enhancements, increased career pathways, and early alert services.

Through this grant, the College will staff a department inclusive of a project coordinator, secretarial support, a student success/career coordinator, and two (2) success coaches.

CVCC RECEIVES FUNDS FOR COLLEGE IMPROVEMENTS On behalf of Senator Tom Whatley, Lauren Cross presented Applied Technology Program Director Clint Langley with a $9,000 donation during a surprise visit to the College.

“The funds are earmarked for the Applied Technology Program and will fund Skills USA, an annual competition for students. This will pay for entry fees and travel for the students and the instructor,” said Langley.

A portion of the funds are also designated for Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) training which is a nationally recognized training certification for students at CVCC.

Randy Carlton Murphy, Jr. never saw himself finishing high school much less going to college and graduating top of the Class of 2020 at Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC). He dropped out of high school in 2000 soon after his father died and had no plans for his future.

“It was tough losing a parent as a teenager,” Murphy said.

“My life at home was rough. I was a lost kid in high school, seeking approval from whomever I could get it from. It was tough to fit in at times, because I just didn’t know how to. I soon went on a path of destruction filled with drugs, partying, and other things.”

Murphy says he had absolutely no interest in school, but with some strong convincing from his grandmother, he decided to get his GED from CVCC in 2002. It was an accomplishment and a step in the right direction for a bright future, but it would be many years later before Murphy decided to focus on continuing his education to make a better life for himself and his family.

“I spent the next 20 years (after dropping out of high school) going through a bunch of ups and downs and working deadend jobs with no real direction in life,” he said. “I never thought about going back to college because I didn’t think I could afford it or that I would actually do well.”

Things look quite different in Murphy’s life these days. He and his wife, Lauren, have two children, Chandler (8) and Ellie (2). He currently works in the Technology Department at the Russell County School District, and he plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He says he hopes his story encourages others to never to give up on their dreams.

“I don’t mind sharing my story at all if it can help and inspire someone else. It’s a part of my testimony.” Reflecting on his faith and the fact that he lost his father as a teenager, he continued with, “In the grand scheme of things, it’s all because of Jesus. He is the one who brought me through this. He is a father to the fatherless.”

Murphy buckled down and decided to give school a try a few years ago. He enrolled at CVCC in 2017, and performed even better than “well” in his classes. Murphy graduated with a 3.9, earning him the honor of being the recipient of the President’s Award for the Class of 2020.

The award is given to the student who has completed a degree program with the highest cumulative grade point average.

“It feels great,” he said with excitement. “It definitely pays off to work hard, and I faced many challenges along the way. I was a full-time student with a family and a full-time job, and I played in a band on the weekends to make extra money. Sleep was very slim. In one of my last semesters at CVCC, my family went through a house fire.

I was actually in the house asleep when the fire started.”

Things got so tough for Murphy at one point, that he almost decided to take a break for a semester or at the very least, take fewer classes than normal. He says the encouragement from his family and his faith in God are the two things that kept him going.

“My family kept me motivated. I knew I was helping their future by graduating,” he said. “They all stayed behind me and kept encouraging me and telling me how proud they were of me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Chattahoochee Valley Community College students Zabria Neely and Blake Shytle were named to the 2020 All-Alabama Academic Team with the Alabama Community College System, a program of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. The two received a $1,000 academic scholarship through the AllUSA Academic Program.

During her time at CVCC, Neely served as president of both Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Government Association.

She graduated with a GPA of 3.82. Neely is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with future plans to attend law school. Her goal is to become a defense attorney and help those wrongly accused regain their freedom. Neely prides herself on being a strong, determined individual who refuses to let anything stop her. She is a survivor of gun violence and an advocate for survivors like herself.

Shytle was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and an Academic Leadership Scholar. He graduated with a 4.00

GPA and was actively engaged in campus and community service initiatives throughout his tenure at CVCC. Shytle received the University of Alabama at Birmingham Transfer Excellence Scholarship. He plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in Biology, which will set his course to pursue medical school. Shytle’s love for medicine is a result of his mother surviving cancer.

All-Alabama Academic team members are nominated by the faculty and reviewed by a selection committee. To be eligible, students must have a 3.5 minimum grade point average, complete at least 12 hours at the nominating college and be involved in campus activities. Each community college in the Alabama Community College System nominates two students. The team nominees are also entered in the AllUSA Academic team competition, which is sponsored by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa.

CVCC’S NURSING PROGRAM SCORES REMAIN TOP-NOTCH IN MIDST OF PANDEMIC Chattahoochee Valley Community College’s Health Sciences Division recently received notice of a 91.1 percent passing rate of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for the Registered Nursing (RN) Program and an astounding 100% passing rate of NCLEX for the Practical Nursing (PN) Program for the third quarter of 2020. The NCLEX pass rates for each quarter are based on the number of Alabama first-time takers of NCLEX who tested within six months of their graduation date.

“Kudos to the Health Sciences Department on guiding our students to success once again, even in the middle of a pandemic,” said Dr. Chantae Calhoun. “We are Pirate Proud.”

CVCC’s PN pass rate has consistently been 100% for the past four years, both the PN and RN passing rates are also consistently well above the national average according to National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN).

College administrators credit the success to hard-working students and dedicated faculty who understood the importance of individual student tutoring and remediation

throughout the program. Dr. Bridgett Jackson, Director of Health Sciences, added that both the ADN and PN Programs have a 100 percent job placement rate.

“Many of our graduates remain in our community to work,” said Jackson. “We assist them with developing clinical skills and a professional work ethic that speaks for itself. It is so rewarding to see that our program has played a part in our graduates becoming leaders in the nursing profession by becoming well-respected clinicians, department managers, hospital administrators, nurse educators, and advanced practice nurses.“ Jackson says the continued support of College administration has also been a key factor. “They listened to our requests and tried their best to accommodate what we needed for the success of our program.”

CHANCELLOR'S AWARD WINNERS RECOGNIZED LOCALLY

Congratulations are in order for the 2020 Chancellor’s Award recipients. The awards recognize two outstanding instructors (academic and career technical), one support staff member, and one administrator who has shown exemplary leadership. Traditionally, the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) holds the annual Alabama Community College Association (ACCA) conference in November, and Chancellor’s Awards winners for each college are recognized at that time. Due to COVID-19, ACCS did not host that conference this year; however, CVCC recognized their winners locally.

“Many things have been altered as a result of COVID-19, but we did not want the opportunity to pass for us to locally recognize our faculty and staff for their efforts,” said Jackie Screws, President. “The Chancellor’s Awards winners have been nominated and selected by their peers and are worthy of recognition.”

Each honoree received a certi icate and recognition with a special video presentation during CVCC’s virtual end-of-the-year professional development session. Congratulations to the Chancellor’s Awards winners:

Demeka Daniels Support Staff Honoree Demeka Daniels serves as Dual Enrollment Coordinator/ Career Coach at CVCC. In that role, she acts as the liaison that connects Russell County, Phenix City, and Lee County School Districts and college technical departments. She provides direct and comprehensive career coaching, advising, and student development. Many of the students she works with become first-generation college graduates. Under Daniels’ leadership, CVCC has strengthened and increased its partnership with local high schools, and the dual enrollment program has doubled in the number of students enrolled.

Daniels received a bachelor’s degree in Cell Biology and Psychology from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a master’s in rehabilitation counseling from Texas Tech University Health Science Center, and a graduate certification in adult education from Auburn University.

Daniels is a self-described Army brat who moved frequently during her childhood. She says having that experience has helped her to be a compassionate person and adapt to new surroundings. Daniels is known for her infectious smile and going the extra mile.

Teresa Brown Career and Technical Faculty Honoree Teresa Brown serves as Nursing Instructor at CVCC. She has been an RN for more than 40 years. Her areas of expertise are ICU, Cardiology, Medical Surgical, and Education. Brown has been a Certified Critical Care nurse for nearly 25 years. She received a bachelor’s in Nursing from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, a master’s in Nursing Administration from Troy University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Nursing Education at Walden University.

Brown was instrumental in assisting to create a remediation plan for CVCC nursing students, and that plan has shown to aid in student retention and student success in completion of the nursing program. She also created an evaluation tool for the nursing simulation lab. Additionally, Brown leads the College’s efforts in the United Way Campaign.

In her spare time, Brown enjoys embroidery and needlepoint.

She is also an avid Auburn Tigers fan. Although she and her late husband of 36 years had no biological children, they have many adopted “Auburn tailgate” children and grandchildren.

Anna McGhee is an English Instructor at CVCC. She has more than 15 years experience teaching elementary, middle school, high school, and postsecondary grades. McGhee worked tirelessly to develop new courses and has revamped developmental coursework in light of the State of Alabama’s new requirements. She teaches to a variety of learning styles in her classroom and keeps students active by utilizing group activities with games and role-playing. McGhee is passionate about seeing her students succeed and feels strongly that building relationships with them is invaluable. McGhee says, “I really want them to see the potential they have and help lead and guide them to their life’s purpose.”

She attended Southern Union and CVCC for the first two years of college and was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to Troy University Phenix City where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Elementary Education.

Besides her passion for teaching, she also loves exercising and helping others reach their fitness potential. She is married to her high school sweetheart, and they have three beautiful girls: Addison, Aniston, and Abby.

Dr. Chantae Calhoun serves as Dean of Instruction at CVCC and is responsible for the overall operation of instructional units of the College, including career/ technical, occupational, and academic. She is also responsible for the Learning Resource Center and is a key collaborator in the College’s strategic planning efforts.

Dr. Calhoun supports faculty members in their efforts to provide quality instruction, and she is a champion for student success. She has worked tirelessly to secure articulation agreements with four-year colleges like Alabama State University, Birmingham Southern College, and Auburn University Montgomery.

Dr. Calhoun earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Alabama State University, a specialist from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a doctorate from the University of Alabama.

She has a passion for education, is an avid sports fan, and enjoys spending time with her family.

HEAD BASKETBALL COACH BEN HICKS SELECTED FOR NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Ben Hicks was selected to participate in the inaugural TopConnect National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) symposium October 8 - 9, 2020. The inaugural class had 30 head men’s basketball coaches and 11 head women’s basketball coaches to participate in this prestigious event.

TopConnect (formerly Villa 7) originated in 2003 by then Virginia Commonwealth University. Athletic Director Dr. Richard Sander identifies the top basketball assistant coaches in the country and connects them with mid-major Athletic Directors, providing tremendous networking opportunities for both parties. The three-word mantra of “Connect.

Prepare. Lead.” identifies the purpose of TopConnect.

“I’m just honored to be a part of this and be able to share my perspective,” said Hicks. “This kind of networking opportunity will positively impact our students, and that’s why I do what I do. I want to help student-athletes be successful.”

CVCC FOUNDATION HALL OF FAME A HUGE SUCCESS

On March 12, The Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) Foundation made history, raising more than $83,000 in scholarship funds at the annual CVCC Foundation Hall of Fame event. The Foundation broke its own record and raised the most funds ever since the inception of the CVCC Hall of Fame. About 250 people gathered at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia, and enjoyed a night of food, fun, and fellowship for this worthy cause.

The night began with a social hour and entertainment by the Smiths Station High School Jazz Band and included dinner and a performance by the CVCC Choir.

The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their professions, their communities, and CVCC. This year’s honorees were retired CVCC Head Basketball Coach Richard Mahone for Distinguished Athlete, Russell County Commissioner and Auburn University Emergency Manager Chance Corbett for Distinguished Alumnus, and CVCC Former Administrator the Late Dr. Rickey Huffstutler for Distinguished Service.

There were 66 sponsors this year, the most ever. Giving increased on every level from the amounts that local business and industry gave to the number of employees who supported the cause. Money raised is used for scholarships to help students in need.

“We cannot thank our sponsors and supporters enough for making this event a success,” said CVCC President Jackie Screws. “These funds make a real difference in our students’ lives every day.”

Wiggins Scholarship will make a real difference in the lives of students at Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) for years to come. Wiggins, a well-known, respected, and admired community leader in the Chattahoochee Valley area, was recently surprised at her retirement reception with a check presentation of $52,000 to establish the fund in her name.

“I think I am still in shock,” exclaimed Wiggins. “I’m extremely grateful for this very generous gift that could not have pleased me more! CVCC holds a very special place in my heart because of the benefit it provides to thousands of area citizens in their pursuit of a higher education for themselves and their children. Anybody who knows me also knows that family and community are very important to me.

CVCC’s excellent faculty and nurturing environment provide a strong underpinning for their students, greatly enhancing their opportunity for future success.”

Wiggins has been a member of the CVCC Foundation Board for more than two decades, having served in various positions and most recently as Board chair before stepping away from that position after her retirement. Under her leadership, the Foundation has been able to provide more scholarships to students in need.

“This scholarship is the perfect way to honor Susan Wiggins,” said President Jackie Screws. “With these funds, we are able to continue her great work in providing students the resources they need to be successful. We hear story after story of how these scholarships, whether for books or full tuition, are essential in helping countless students reach their full potential. Helping someone along the way is what Susan is all about.”

Wiggins began her work at the W.C. Bradley Co. in 1980, and officially retired November 1, 2019. The privately held company is an international marketer of quality leisure lifestyle products featuring familiar brands such as CharBroil, Tiki, Lamplight, Zebco, Quantum, Fin-Nor and others, as well as local real estate developments including, among others, the Eagle & Phenix loft condominiums, Synovus Centre, The Rapids and Brookstone Centre. Wiggins has served as vice president, Stakeholder Relations since 1992 when she became the first woman officer of the company.

The goal of the Stakeholders Department is to support and nurture a corporate culture through quality communications, events and services that convey the company’s core values of integrity and stewardship. Prior to joining W.C. Bradley Co., Wiggins held the position of Marketing Officer for Trust Company of Columbus where she was the first woman hired to be an officer of the bank.

I think the magnitude of the response we received speaks volumes as to the kind of person Susan is. On top of everything else, we actually surprised her, and you can’t get much past Susan,” he continued with a laugh.

“They really got me this time, and I am forever grateful,” said Wiggins.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE – FOUNDATION FUNDRAISERS RUN YOUR RACE, AT YOUR PACE, IN YOUR SPACE - CVCC’S FOUNDATION 10TH ANNUAL TRACK OR TREAT GOES VIRTUAL For the first time ever, participants in the Chattahoochee Valley Community College Foundation’s Chris Patterson Memorial Track or Treat 5K Run joined in the fun from all over the world. Traditionally, the event is held at the Phenix City Amphitheatre. This year, participants chose their course, and had the opportunity to participate from literally anywhere mother pay for day care, paying for transportation to campus or paying for books and supplies not covered anytime between October 23 – November 1. by financial aid. The CVCC Pirate athletic teams did their part by coming together on campus to participate in their own “virtual run” for the cause. The women’s and men’s basketball teams, softball team, and baseball team were all involved.

“We are thrilled that the special 10th Annual event was a huge success in the virtual format,” said Lise Patterson, mother of Chris Patterson whom the event is held in memory. “To have participation from all over the world is so heartwarming. We know that our son Chris, would be so proud.”

Track or Treat is a fun 5K run held in memory of Chris Patterson, a highly respected and beloved student advisor at CVCC who passed away in 2009. Patterson had a passion for students, a love for running, and an amusement for great costumes.

All the proceeds benefit the CVCC Foundation Chris Patterson Student Support Fund which is designed to help CVCC students facing financial hardships to complete their education. The fund has assisted students in many diverse ways, including helping a single

CVCC RECOGNIZES BLACK HISTORY For more than 40 Chattahoochee Valley Community College students, faculty, and staff who visited The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery, Alabama, it was more than a field trip. It was an experience they say they will never forget.

“It was very enlightening,” said Eric Woldridge, a business major at CVCC. “One thing I never knew was the story of Claudette Colvin, the young lady who was the first to refuse to give up her seat on the bus. She was single and pregnant, so her story is not as well known. I’ve learned a lot about our culture,” he continued. “To see the names of those who died from the mob lynchings was chilling. It’s one thing to hear about people but to put their names to it gives it new meaning.”

“This was an opportunity to learn more about the history of slavery and African Americans,” said Vickie Williams, Associate Dean of Student Development and Success and CVCC Diversity Committee Chair. “It’s absolutely lifechanging, and we are just excited to be able to offer this opportunity to our students.”

The trip was one of several ways the College observed Black History Month. The culminating Black History event was a special program titled “CVCC Celebrates Black History with You.” The event featured the CVCC Choir and dramatic performances through spoken word and personifications of historical figures like R alph Abernathy, a c ivil r ights activist and Baptist minister, and Lena Baker who was executed

Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) Men’s Basketball team recently laced up their running shoes in support of education. Players participated in the Walking Towards Education Walk-A-Thon at Art Park in Phenix City. All proceeds from the event support college scholarship opportunities for high school students.

The walk-a-thon was hosted by The Uplift Foundation and Lambda Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Fraternity, Inc.

VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR FIRST-TIME VOTER Student leaders at CVCC hosted a voter registration drive at the College to encourage students to exercise their right to vote. On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, CVCC distributed information on the importance of voting and voter rules, regulations, and deadlines of the Chattahoochee Valley area. The group set up laptops six feet apart in the Phenix City room to provide students the opportunity to register to vote online. The event was a success, and 25 students were registered to vote at the drive. Nationally, there was an increase in the number of first-time voters this election cycle.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED Chattahoochee Valley Community College was proud to do its part to encourage students, faculty, staff, and the entire community to take part in the 2020 Census. Sheinoura Wise, Advising Coordinator, represented CVCC at the Alabama Community College System kickoff rally and meeting held in Montgomery, Alabama, in January. Community college representatives, state officials, and U.S. Census Bureau staff came together to discuss ways to get the word out about the 2020 Census.

Under the leadership of Vickie Williams, Associate Dean for Student Development and Success, CVCC revamped original plans amid the COVID-19 crisis. Like many other institutions, the College executed a virtual campaign that included emailing reminders to students, faculty, and staff and posting census information on the College’s website and social media platforms that emphasized the importance of the census and its impact on the community.

Community colleges rely on federal funding to help support many student and community programs which are impacted by the census count. More than 60% of Alabama’s community college students receive financial aid which includes Pell Grants, a federally supported aid program. CVCC was proud to be a part of a reported 99.9% 2020 Census response rate in Alabama, which is an increase from 10 years ago.
