DINING GUIDE Every week, the Arkansas Times reviews a local restaurant. Reviewers visit anonymously and pay their own tab. The newspaper receives no consideration in exchange for the reviews. From those reviews, the newspaper compiles a list of capsule reviews. The list covers virtually all the essential stops on the Little Rock dining scene, but, of course, it’s constantly changing. The Arkansas Times keeps up with the changing restaurant scene. See newsstands all over the city and pick up your free copy of Arkansas’s source for news, politics and entertainment, and find our daily reporting, including our food blog Eat Arkansas, at arktimes.com. To make your dining experience more pleasurable and easy to navigate, we’ve listed restaurants by district, and then in some cases, certain neighborhoods within their district. Within each section, we’ve compiled a list of full-service restaurants and a list of quickservice restaurants, and have identified those with live music with a musical note. Restaurants are listed in alphabetical order in each listing. Additionally, we’ve also compiled an editorial feature on our vibrant dining and food scene, and have put together a simple map highlighting our various city districts and our neighborhoods.

LITTLE ROCK DINING INSTITUTIONS As Arkansas’s capital city and cultural core, the greater Little Rock area provides visitors with a wealth of wonderful and engaging experiences. Little Rock is renowned for its charming hospitality, genuine people, and new Southern style. In fact, Little Rock has received numerous accolades, including being ranked #1 by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in its annual “10 Great Places to Live, 2013;” being selected as an Editor’s Choice by Outside magazine in its “Best Towns of 2013;” named one of “Five Secret Foodie Cities” by Forbes Travel Guide in 2014, and recently named one of the “Top 10 US Best Value Cities” by Trivago.com. Little Rock’s dining landscape is second to none, honoring its rich culinary history and heritage as it celebrates a wealth of new Southern cuisine options. From award-winning chefs creating unforgettable artisanal dishes to restaurants featuring classics like barbecue and blue-plate specials or adventurous ethnic menus, the city’s food scene is vibrant and diverse. We welcome you to our Little Rock. When you visit, we hope you see why we say, “Dining is Better with a Southern Accent.”

“I’m constantly amazed by how far Little Rock’s food scene has come. Chefs here are sparking passion in the community for quality, local ingredients prepared with love and expertise. Little Rock is on its way to becoming a must-go culinary destination.” Steve Shuler Little Rock Foodcast · LRFoodcast.com 2 54

Food is synonymous with Southern culture and defines its communities. As Arkansas’s capital city, Little Rock is home to iconic establishments that have earned their places as dining institutions, having stood the test of time for 50 years or more, and served generations of diners. Franke’s Cafeteria is one of Arkansas’s oldest continually operating restaurants located in the heart of downtown in the Regions Bank building. The Lassis Inn, a bright blue house near Interstate 30, is a simple building that has served up amazing fried catfish fillets and buffalo ribs since 1905. Bruno’s Little Italy dates back to 1949, when the original restaurant opened on Roosevelt Avenue, and was the first Italian restaurant listed in “Darnell’s Guide to Good Eating in the South.” Now located on Main Street, diners enjoy its Neapolitan-style, hand-thrown pizzas and large variety of classic Italian dishes. For those looking to satisfy a sweet tooth or savor a mouth-watering quiche, Community Bakery is a must-visit. In business since 1947, it is famous for its pastries, cakes and baked goods – all made with love, and many from the original recipes.

LITTLE ROCK’S EVOLVING FOOD SCENE Little Rock’s burgeoning craft and artisanal food movement proves that what was once old can be new again. Boulevard Bread Company, Hillcrest Artisan Meats, Kent Walker Cheeses, Le Pops Gourmet Ice Lollies, Loblolly Creamery and Mylo Coffee Co. are focused on using the freshest and highest quality ingredients – locally-sourced as much as possible – to produce the most flavorful, small-batch 3 55

products where the focus is on quality, not quantity. Many of the city’s restaurants are using locally-sourced ingredients for farm-totable freshness on their menus – supporting the local economy and speaking to the very essence of community. Celebrating its 40th year in 2014, the Little Rock Farmers’ Market is Arkansas’s oldest and largest farmers’ market and features a variety of fresh, in-season produce, and a number of food, floral and art and craft vendors. The city has numerous farmers’ and specialty markets that operate in neighborhoods throughout the city. “It’s hard to imagine a more burgeoning food scene than what we currently have right here in Little Rock. New restaurants, brew pubs and eateries are popping up left and right, joining an already well-regarded list of entrenched dining establishments, to form a culinary community that’s worth getting excited about.” Kevin Shalin “The Mighty Rib” Blog · TheMightyRib.com 56 4

Founded in 2010, Rock Town Distillery is the state’s first legal distillery since Prohibition and specializes in small-batch bourbon whiskeys, gins, rum and vodkas. Its spirits have won both national and international acclaim, including one of its single barrel reserve bourbons being named “US Micro Whisky of the Year” in the 2015 issue of the Whisky Bible by Jim Murray. The grandfather of Little Rock’s craft beer scene is Vino’s Pizza Pub and Brewery, where, since 1991, diners have enjoyed stone-baked calzone or a slice of pizza with their brew. Diamond Bear Brewing Co. opened its doors in Little Rock in 2000, and in 2014, moved across the Arkansas River to North Little Rock’s Argenta neighborhood and offers tours on Fridays and Saturdays. A fun neighborhood watering hole is a mere stone’s throw away – literally. Stone’s Throw Brewery in the heart of the MacArthur Park Historic District, is a happening scene with “Arkie Trivia Night,” a hit with local kick ballers. 57 5

“In the past decade, Little Rock’s restaurant scene has undergone a renaissance, blooming with farm-to-table bistros, innovative bakeries and bars and a burgeoning food truck scene incubating future brick-and-mortar establishments. Culinary travelers would be hard-put to find another destination with such an eclectic range of edibles, from soul food and heritage barbecue to world-class charcuteries and fantastic fusion fare. And cheese dip, of course.” Kat Robinson Tie Dye Travels with Kat Robinson Blog; Published Food and Travel Writer · TieDyeTravels.com

Refined Ale Brewery is the first black-owned brewery in Arkansas, specializing in ales and malt liquor, and is the only such brewer in the south. Its use of old-world style brewing techniques gives visitors a refreshing break from the norm. The River Market District boasts Blue Canoe that offers guests – or “paddlers,” – home brews in their taproom decorated by “Ole’ Blue,” the canoe. Lost Forty accompanies a bit of Arkansas folklore by taking its namesake from the storied, unspoiled forest in southwest Arkansas. There are no signs of slowing central Arkansas’s ale trail, and others are joining the ranks on a regular basis. In 2015, Little Rock will gets its first winery room, Raimondo Family Winery, in the heart of downtown along Main Street’s Creative Corridor. This family-owned winery will produce and sell a variety of red, white and sparkling wines, along with a number of infused olive oils and vinegars. For the most up-to-date brewery, distillery and winery offerings, go to LittleRock.com and click on the “Dining” or “Things to Do” tabs for current information.

cheese dips in America. Little Rock’s annual Food Truck Festival has gained traction as food trucks have become an integral part of our revitalized downtown. Special Food Truck Friday events are held each spring and fall. And what better way to close out the year than with a Nog-Off eggnog contest – with both professional and amateur divisions. It’s a great way to enjoy and ring in the holidays.

LITTLE ROCK RESTAURANT MONTH With more than 550 full-service restaurants in Little Rock, the best way to re-visit an old favorite or discover a new one is during Little Rock Restaurant Month, held each year in August. It’s a great way for families, friends and visitors to connect over a great meal. More than 100 establishments participate, and nearly every type of cuisine is offered. Regardless of your palate, you’re certain to find specials to tempt your taste buds, and numerous restaurants to experience and explore.

CULINARY CLASSES FOR THE TAKING How many times have you wondered ‘how can I cook that?’ Well, Pulaski Technical College’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Institute can assist. While the institute is a school where professional chefs train, and it also provides classes for individuals or groups that teach proper cooking techniques, unique food preparation, premier baking, wine and cheese pairings, and much more. LITTLE ROCK FOOD FESTIVALS When food is the focus of any local festival, it’s a recipe for success. Little Rock is home to several ethnic heritage celebrations such as its annual Jewish, Greek, and Turkish food festivals. The Arkansas Cornbread Festival is a nod to southern roots, and the World Cheese Dip Championship honors Arkansas as the birthplace of 58 6

“One of the most exciting things about living in Little Rock is how the food scene has exploded in the city. I travel a lot and can tell you that Little Rock has become one of the great food cities in the South. From modern takes on Southern cooking at places like South on Main and Natchez to decades-old classics like Sim’s and the Lassis Inn, Little Rock has it all.” Rex Nelson Rex Nelson’s Southern Fried Blog RexNelsonSouthernFried.com 59 7
