Introduction The Black Minority and Ethnic (BME) Network at Community and Voluntary Action Tameside (CVAT) presents its ‘Menu of Service: Tameside 2015. Menu of Service provides introduction and insight into some of the dedicated community groups who serve the Black, Minority and Ethnic community in Tameside. The Menu provides details of group’s current areas of work, activities, future goals, achievements, highlights and collaborative work.


Hyde Community Action Hyde Community Action aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Bangladeshi women residing in Hyde community. It empowers priority groups to contribute to social, economical and political development in their communities. The charity’s aims and objectives are put in to practice through inventive community development and support work. It also uses signposting, partnership and agency work to broaden and convey its services to wider communities. are involved in various aspects of the decision making process. This Provides volunteers with significant responsibilities and boosts personal, social and educational development. This year Hyde Community Action has been successful in receiving funding from Big Lottery (2011), this major funding will continue to support learning and development of volunteers for another three years.

Collaborative & partnership work Hyde Community Action is working in partnership with Primary Care Trust on a ‘niche tobacco’ project. The group is also engaging local volunteers and people to advocate dangers of ‘Smokeless Tobacco’.

Future focus Hyde Community Action (HCA) would like to work more collaboratively with other groups in Tameside. HCA would also like similar groups and charities to share and highlight the benefit of good practice. Finally, HCA would like to continue to reduce barriers and inequalities in the community.

Hyde Bangladeshi Welfare Association Hyde Bangladesh Welfare Association (HBWA) was formed in 1976 to help and support the Bangladeshi community in Hyde to: Improve education and training Improve employment and self-employment opportunities, provide information, advice and support on social and welfare issues, develop greater cohesion and understanding amongst the different communities, providing opportunities for children/young people. We have been devising, developing and delivering a range of projects encompassing all age groups, gender and communities, such as ‘A Stitch in Time’ textile project for women, funded by Awards for All: ‘Jubo Shangho’ youth club in partnership with Tameside MBC; After school Club and holiday activities for children; luncheon club; advice & information; ‘Future Finder’. Awards for All recognising young talents across three Wards in Hyde involving secondary schools, colleges and local communities; cultural events; etc.

Collaborative & partnership work HBWA is keen on partnership work, which has reflected into joint workings with high schools and colleges across Hyde Werneth and Hyde Godley wards for Future Leaders Awards recognising academic achievements; community achievements; inspirational young person; higher achiever; and team award.

Future focus HBWA will continue to focus on developing diverse activities in line with the needs of the local community. Having revised policies and procedures, we intend to increase our commissioning and contracting efforts. We also intend to obtain a quality mark in 2015.

Current Areas of Work We currently offer Pro Bono Community Legal Centre / Hub to people from the Thai Community

Main Outcomes Provision of pro bono & discounted legal services. Maintaining healthy, happy environments is an important, and often neglected part of aid work. We work with the local community closely.

Current Areas of Work Crafts, Healthy Eating and Exercise Lunch and Food awareness. Luncheon Club, twice weekly Friendship Health and wellbeing including exercise Crafts using recycled plastic bottles. Khush Amdid meet twice weekly, On Mondays they meet at Holy Trinity Community centre, Dean Street, Ashton Under Lyne, OL6 7HD. They also meet every Thursday at The Common Room, Cranbrook Gardens, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 9AA. Both groups meet from 10am— 2pm and any woman between the ages of 18—80 are welcome. Particularly women from a Pakistani background.

Main Outcomes ‘Biligual support is currently being offered’ Urdu, Punjabi and English. Collaborative and Partnership Work Khush Amdid work in partnership with Tameside Elders Association an older Asian Men’s project, and also at a Local and regional level they feed into the Greater Manchester BME Network.

Future Focus The group are keen to continue to offer the same services and to begin new services. They are always happy to welcome new members and organise trips, including an international trip this year. They are or will be offering computer awareness, weight management, sewing classes, massage, crafts and yogi. They will continue to make links with other groups and will continue to be part of the BME network and host events throughout the year.


Tameside Elders Association Tameside Elders Association’s (TEA) objective is to promote social wellbeing of elderly members in the community, particularly elderly Asian men. However, the group is open to all elderly members of Tameside regardless of their cultural background. Moreover, the group facilitates recreational and leisure activities. This year TEA has employed a part time Development Worker to support its increasing membership. TEA has started to provide advice and drop in sessions to its members. Bilingual support with form filling is also being offered.

West African Development West African Development aims to break social barriers to integrate people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It aims to raise self-esteem and quality of life through facilitating meetings, activities and cultural events. WAD’S events and activities include: dancing, drumming, sporting and arts. Peace Talks Tameside Peace Talks Tameside aims to promote awareness of peace to the people of Tameside and surrounding areas. Current areas of work Training & Support, Learning & Development. The group promotes awareness of Peace by offering free of charge two courses – a short 3 workshop Peace Course and a longer 10 workshop Peace Education Programme. We also, raise awareness of our aim through exhibitions and celebrating UN International Day of Peace. The group aims to promote Peace Education Programme which has proven to help individuals develop positive life skills and discover inner resources such as self worth and dignity. This is an effective means to help increase the harmony within individuals and the community in which they serve.

Highlights & achievement We celebrated UN International Day Peace 21 September, 2014 by exhibiting audio visual material at Tameside Library. This event was attended by guests, visitors to the library and councillors. It was also, listed on the International Day of Peace and Word of Peace Global websites. We successfully delivered a Peace Education Programme in Rochdale to a group of 19 Refugees and asylum seekers. One participant quoted “I like section on feeling peace in my life is possibility for me.”

Future focus PTT would like to develop partnerships with businesses and organisations to promote our aim and actively participate in celebrating UN International Day of Peace annually. We are also considering offering Wellbeing in the Caring Professions course to NHS staff, social workers, counsellors, therapists, etc.

Project examples Our homework club was launched in March 2007 and has been tailored for children of BME origin, living and attending schools across Tameside. Our community cohesion project was set up to bring communities together. To bring awareness of different cultures, backgrounds and communities so that there will be a better understanding between the communities. We work specifically with new migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and their families, young people and women. We help to ease their integration into life in the UK by breaking down barriers to social inclusion.

Future focus Changing our approach to include and support all BME communities in Tameside.

Collaborative and partnership work Tara would like to continue to work more with other BME organisations and external agencies.

To promote the learning and education of vulnerable European migrants and their dependents through the continual development of their individual capabilities, competencies, skills and understanding in the English language and vocational and social skills including employability. To promote social inclusion for the public benefit and avoid poverty by working with vulnerable European migrants and their dependents who are socially excluded due to their ethnic origin or nationality and to assist them to integrate into British society.
