Gaël Davrinche: Contemplations

Contemplations We are delighted to present you our second solo show of the year: Contemplations, dedicated to the prestigious French painter Gaël Davrinche. The show will run from May 16th to June 30th 2019, and this will be Gaël’s first exhibition in Singapore.

Like most notable French masters, Gaël Davrinche (b. France, 1971) graduated from the Beaux-Arts School in Paris. He stood out from the rest almost instantaneously and earned his reputation through a bevy of impressive techniques and the ability to paint across multiple-styles: from abstract compositions to hyper-realistic portraits. In addition, Gaël is internationally acclaimed for his adeptness in mastering colour and light. In Contemplations, the audience will be able to contemplate the figure of Flower, the versatility and unique technique of the artist through his two very different Flower series: Nebulae and Nocturnes.

In the Nebulae series, the artist casts streaks of colour over up-close and enlarged flowers, to create a hyper-realistic portrayal of a blurred image. He keeps the strokes soft and the tones saturated to shape a perfect gradual blurring of the subject matter. The effect is so ethereal that it allows the viewer to distance themselves from the subject, leaving a vantage point of interpretation.

On the contrary, the Nocturnes series is an homage to two forms of arts: the Dutch Masters and Pop Art. The artist brings the light source to the foreground, so the focus falls entirely on the subject which brings contrast to its low-key ambience – a style that is reminiscent of the neoclassical representation of flowers. Assembled alongside the Dutch golden age genre paintings, viewers will be enthralled by what seems to be Andy Warhol’s iconic daisies. Through his exploration in the properties of colour and light, Gaël incorporated these two different styles, added a whole new dimension to his innovative approach to art.

Gaël Davrinche’s artworks have been exhibited in galleries around the world and are part of several collections including the Musée Ingres and the Musée des Beaux Arts de Chambéry.
