General Education Courses: No Need for Them

General Education courses may be one of the most hated requirements in college by students. These courses are required amongst all college students regardless of one's major or minor. General Education courses may vary with schools but usually consist of: the arts and humanities, social science, natural science, mathematics, and writing. These courses should be optional; students should be able to take them at their own interest such as with elective courses. Without GeneralEducation courses it is understood that students will not have completed or received credits needed to graduate. Required college courses should be based solely on one's major or minor. Students should not be required to...show more content...

General Education requirements for students results in a longer time to actually work on minor and major requirements. Allysa Pracz, Oral Communications teacher at Northern Illinois University, holds a just and honest opinion that General Educations classes are useless because they may have nothing to do with one's major. For instance, a college algebra course would obviously have no effect on a student studying Creative Writing. The only question left to answer would be, why do such requirements exist? It could also be understood that courses required in fact focus on what students should have learned in high school. Pracz recalls her freshman year in college, stating, "I remember as a freshman taking classes such as ENGL 103 or COMS 100. Yes, both classes may be beneficial to some, but they mostly just rehash concepts and skills that the majority of students already possess or will pick up in other courses throughout their academic careers." College students should be somewhat familiar with the basic concepts of many subjects offered, such as writing papers or algebra. It could also be proven that students are not quite interested in classes that they see as useless. For instance, students who major in Apparel Merchandising would have no interest in taking biology courses. Disinterest could ultimately result in bad grades and a low GPA for students. Educational reform is yet to be perfected. Teachers shape the minds of students to realize what their purpose is in life. Lately, because of certain educational reforms, it has been hard for teachers to say what they need to say. "In 40–plus states, the math and English guidelines determine the knowledge students have to master by the end of each grade, what they'll be tested on this year, and in many cases, how teachers and principals will be rated at their jobs once those test scores are released" (Strauss). Most educational reforms are adopting standardized testing and should be reconsidered. Statistics even show that since we have taken part in reforms like No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top, and Common Core State Standards math and reading are declining. These standards tell teachers what to teach and what the students should know by the end of the school year. The reforms also evaluate teacher performance by how well the students learn the information. Some people believe educational reforms should not be telling teachers how to teach their students, and others believe that the reforms are absolutely fine the way they are. However the truth is educational reforms are yet to be perfected. One point of view a person could have about educational reform is that students throughout the country should all have the same high–quality standards. Issues and Controversies states,"All states should adhere to similar academic standards so that American youth are Get

College tuition is a subject that I am certain is on every college student's mind. The current cost of college has become so outrageously high and so students are graduating college with what you think is a feeling of excitement for their lives starting, when in reality they are entering a pool of stress due to high amounts of debt and no job guarantees. With that being said overly expensiveCollege Tuition is merely taking away opportunities from potential students. According to Collegefactual.com, you will see that 20 years ago the average college tuition for a student at any University was around $6,285 for the room, board, and tuition. Today, according to Niche.com, the average tuition for almost any college is over $30,000 for those same things. Today, this isn't even offered for those same colleges, we don't even know what is actually causing the raising tuition. At this point in time, we are paying for the name. Just like clothing, we pay more for the "high end" (a.k.a the college name) items. This is an issue that not only affects college students, but people who want a good education. College tuition should be lowered because the average student debt is too high, FAFSA results can be misleading and not high enough, and there is not enough access to college for deserving students.

There are some students that can barely afford a community college, and community college prices are not as high as four year universities. Many people in the US wants to go to college and Get

Colleges are struggling to adapt to society's changing requirements for adults entering the work force. John Fawell laments this change and states that humans intrinsically desire to learn more for the purpose of knowing more. However, the focus has shifted away from this and has become more career–oriented. This shift is not well supported in the current college system. The education system is aware of this change and some have modified their programs, but they are too narrow and a broad college education is lost. Even though it has become almost mandatory in society, a college degree does not prepare students for a real–world work environment and is not necessary for most occupations. Many, such as lawyers or doctors, do require further education and a system that instructs them while also training the majority of the workforce would be an improvement. In her article, "How

Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts Programs Prepare Students for the Workforce and for Life,"

Nutting argues that a liberal arts education is necessary to prepare adults for the work force. Evidence is provided to support the need of a liberal arts education and she even points to specific schools who are implementing this well. One particular example is Montgomery College in Washington, which has an honors program where "virtually all" of the graduates have "moved directly to 4–year colleges," which is incredible, however, she does not mention what the focus of the degrees are or what

"And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it." (Barack Obama) College is needed for many careers, whether you want to be a doctor, teacher, or vet, it will be required to obtain a college education. College has many benefits in the long run, from earning more money, increased job security, better health and much more. Going to college opens up a door of endless possibilities, which is why everyone should go to college. First and foremost, achieving a college education is definitely more work, but it also helps college graduates earn more money than the average high school graduate or a high school dropout. According to the video, "Five Ways Ed Pays" developed by the College Board it explains that college graduates earn an average of 22,000 dollars more per year than high school graduates. Now considering that the average person needs to earn around 50,000 dollars a year to live comfortably, $22,000 is a generous portion of money. College Board also explained another statistic for college graduates, "A average of 63% more in hourly wages, than the average high school graduate." Meaning a college grad will have less stress due to them being more financially stable. Some may be thinking or saying that they are going to be rich without going to college, but our 44th president Barack Obama says something different. Unlike most college students, I began my undergraduate career at the age of 16. With my youth came some naivete. The chance to offer advice to myself as an incoming freshman is an opportunity I would take in a heartbeat. I would dispense advice in three areas: academics, social life, and personal conduct.

In the past you have been a fairly strong student, but there are some pointers that you may want to heed. Although the laptop you were gifted as a graduation present may be a powerful tool, you probably should not take it to class. With your laptop's capacity to enrich your educational experience comes an equal if not greater capacity to distract you from class. Stick to a pencil and notebook as much as you can. Traditional note taking will improve both your memory and your GPA.

On a similar note, try not to overcomplicate school work. There is no need to reinvent the wheel with every assignment. Often, your old tried and true methods will work out the best. You may catch yourself searching for novel ways to complete course work. You will find this is nothing more than an advanced form of procrastination. Starting assignments as soon as they are assigned will help quell this problem. I hope this helps you spend fewer late nights fretting.

On the subject of late nights, a few more would not kill you. I am all too familiar with the ongoing battle in you between perfectionism and your love of sleep. That stated, your time will be a precious resource in the coming years. A

"The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease." Physicians are the most common type of doctor. Physicians see people when they get their check up, when they feel sick, and when they think something is wrong. Physicians make people feel better and healthier, and without them, the grim truth about life arises. Aside from this, becoming aphysician is a grueling task. Like any doctor, years of schooling and practice makes someone perfect for the job, but not all people can become one. It takes the right person to fulfill the requirements of becoming a physician. Being a physician is a demanding job, but it suits me because of my empathy for others, my proficiency in science and anatomy, and my motivation to succeed.

Physicians work with people of all ages daily, working to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness, disease, and/or injury. Physicians are encouraged to form strong bonds with their patients, and treat them with the utmost respect. Every day, patients come in for various reasons; one may be a high schooler for a physical, another may be a fifty year–old man for a persistent cough. Regardless of their problem, physicians are required to, according to the Minnesota Association of Community Health Centers (MNACHC), "obtain medical history, perform physical examinations, prescribe medication, treat minor injuries, read incoming reports from other specialists, and assist other medical personnel in the workplace."

Specific Purpose:

To persuade my speech class to demand a combined test(s) that evaluates both student's college readiness and school performance.

Thesis: Community members and students should urge the educational system and government to develop a test or series of tests that both evaluate a student's college readiness and school's performance.

Introduction: For the 2014–2015 school year it was projected that 2.2 million of 3.3 million students enrolled straight into post secondary education (Education Commission of the, States 27 Mar. 2016) That means 2.2 million students had to take the ACTs or SATs in order to get into college. Most of them had no prior preparation leading up to the test and were just thrown into it.

This is because students are forced to take standardized test that evaluate the schools performance their entire grading schooling career. Schools don't help kids with college readiness testing because they are more concerned about receiving enough funding from the state. Community members and students should urge the educational system and government to develop a test or series of tests that both evaluate a student's college readiness and school's performance.

Transition: Student's are being given the short end of the stick by not becoming prepared for the most important test of the life. Their has to be change in the system to stop more kids from not being evaluated fairly. The state reports to the public how students do on standardized Get

Have you ever wondered why you couldn't take a class at school that truly interests you, such as learning about the culinary arts or discovering the ins and outs of being an emergency medical technician? Vocational education is an option that is becoming increasingly popular for students seeking a wider variety of class choices. Sometimes, when people hear the words "vocational education," a negative image pops into their minds. Many people believe that vocational education is primarily offered to non–college bound students, dropouts, or students with special needs. What people don't realize is that vocational education can give students the opportunity to improve their employability skills, become informed about different career options, and learn helpful skills they can use throughout the rest of their lives even before going to college and being released into the real world. Therefore, I believe that vocational education should be offered to students.

One of the main reasons vocational education would be a good aspect to bring into the Public School system is that it would bring the importance and purpose of doing well in school back into students' minds who are struggling in their four years of high school. When asked her opinion on vocational education a student responded positively saying, "Kids actually have fun taking these courses, and we're not as worried about our grades because [what we are learning about is] so interesting and we want to learn about it"

Your junior year, when all of the adults are asking the same question, "What college are you going to?" Fast forward to your senior year and college applications are due. It seems as if all that is expected of highschoolers is to go to college. Four, or more, years of torcherous education that you are "supposed" to want. However, college is more that that. Along with monetary benefits such as a superior job and lower unemployment rates, college is an opportunity to learn more about the world and yourself. College is a profitable choice because even though it might not seem like it in the beginning, college helps with securing a better job. According to How College Shapes Lives: Understanding the Issues, from https://trends.collegeboard.org/ , the text states that, "In 2011, median earnings for 35– to 44–year–olds working full time who's highest degree was a bachelor's degree were $62,700, compared to $34,900 for high schools graduates (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011; calculations by the authors)." It is disclosed that these workers have a gap of $27,800 in their annual pay, just because of their education level. All of that money can be used to pay off loans, debts, pay for a house, car, and even be used to your freewill, like traveling or treats.
