Personal Narrative: My First Time On My Own

I totally agree with what the author is saying in the text. It takes time to get a good product out even though we think some people are deep and wonderful they still have the same struggles that we have when it comes to writing. I like this text because it is realistic it is giving an account of first drafts from common day people and shows how it is even for professional writers have problems with. This point is important because as people we sometimes feel we are not as good or capable of doing something not realizing that the people we look up to have the same problems we do. Another point that I agree with the author on is that you have to start somewhere. Many times as writers we don't know where to start when it comes to writing. That being said we will just sit and think for ten twenty minutes when we could've just been information on the paper and then editing it later. In addition I liked that the author used examples from his professional experience when it came to writing food reviews. By him using details like how he went to the restaurant and sat down with friends and took notes of what was said. This was good to me because it helps me connect with him and the things that he does to write his reviews. The purpose you have for assigning this is to show us that everyone has struggles writing. By us doing this it makes us realize that it is normal and okay for us not to know exactly what we are writing about or what we want to say. This gives us confidence

Reflective Essay Writing

Life is full of exciting experiences for us to enjoy. However, these experiences are meant to teach life lessons that should remain with us. In my 17 years of living, I have had many lessons to be learned from events I have gone through. One of those lessons sticks out above the rest and it has a humorous story to go along with it. The story starts out with the group planning a get together while eating breakfast at Mcdonald's. Ideas were flowing out of our heads like a river. We could not agree on a plan of action for the longest time. Finally, it was decided that we should go to Kenzie's house after she said her dad would cook for us. I was immediately down for that idea because I knew her dad makes the best chicken wings ever. The rest of the day for me was spent thinking about what to wear that night. Eventually, the time came for heading over to Kenzie's house. Bailey, another girl in the group, asked me to give her a ride since she did not have her driver's license. Because of this, we were one of the last ones to make it to Kenzie's. In the time that we missed the group decided that they wanted to go and toilet paper some of our friend's houses that lived close to Kenzie. I had never done something like this before. However, the excitement of doing this and avoid being caught appealed to me. We all piled into the cars and headed to Wal–Mart to buy the toilet paper. We had an interesting event that happened to us while we were in Wal–Mart. The event was when Get more content

Effective Teamwork 11/30/2015 SOC/110 Professor Rowell

An effective team has strong leadership where the team leader not only recognizes what they bring to the team but what each team member brings as well. A strong leader protects their team and doesn't have a hidden agenda. Respect is a very important characteristic of an effective team because if members of the team disrespect each other and put down team member's ideas, productivity could possibly slow down because team member's willingness to contribute ideas and solutions might diminish due to disrespectful communication between members. Open and honest communication between team members and the team leader is important because without...show more content...

Your core personality is your unique way of experiencing and behaving in the world that surrounds you. Internal dimensions are things that you can't control or change about yourself, your age, race, or ethnicity. External dimensions are based on societal and experiential factors in your life for example, your religion, marital status and educational Get

Persuasive Speech

During my persuasive speech, I used an attention getter with a story to put a face on the problem of the 5–day work week because it is something for the audience to get attached to. In my attention getter, Jeff Campbell suffers from a stroke from working long hours as an accountant. I believe it was effective in showing pathos to the problem of the 5–day work week. In my thesis, I clearly stated the topic and related it to my audience by telling them that it will affect all full–time employees in America. To conclude my introduction, I gave a preview of the what I was going to talk about during my speech, which included the problems, causes, and solutions. I believe that my speech was well organized because I went to different parts of the room for each of my main points, and because of this my main points were very easy to follow. I transitioned between my main points very smoothly with talking while walking throughout the room. Throughout my main points, I gave multiple verbal citations over data that was collected about problems with the 5–day work week and solutions with the 4–day work week. I did not have a way of verbally proving that my sources were credible. I am not sure if I had a variety of different supporting materials, but I had a reliable data and a reliable example of the solution working in the state of Utah. My format for the speech involved pathos, ethos, and logos to use fulfill maximum effectiveness. Some persuasive strategies that I used included telling a story, giving data to support my hypothesis, giving the audience a reason to care about the topic, relating the reasoning about the solution to the audience, giving a real–life example of the solution working, and giving the audience a call to action at the end of my speech. If I used fillers, I was unaware of me using them during my speech. During this speech, I tried to make it a priority to use some vocal variation because I have lacked that skill in past speeches. So, during my speech, I tried to use some vocal variation especially during the reasoning parts because vocal variation really helps with reasoning. I used appropriate movement throughout my speech for each main point to keep the audience interested. I believe that my

My Family History

Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer to self–discovery.

On Christmas only my mother and the children (me and my brother) travel to Illinois to spend a week with my grandparents. On New Years Eve we all get together at my parents' house in New Jersey and toast to the New Year with champagne and apple cider. During Labor Day weekend all of my family travels to South Jersey to my grandfathers' condo. We usually spend all of our time on the beach and barbequing, except on Sunday when we go to church. After all, my grandfather is a minister. One of our biggest family traditions is going back to Puerto Rico. Every year my mother and I travel back to Puerto Rico for a portion of our summer vacation. Now that I am older I travel there more often and stay there much longer. My father never joins because he doesn't like my mothers side of the father too much and he thinks that we when we speak Spanish we are all plotting against him. Of course that's not true though. My bother doesn't speak Spanish so he doesn't like to go either. I guess that tradition is one that belongs solely to my mother and I.

The role of the people in family basically stayed the same for most of the generations with a little change in the later generations. Earlier the males were the only ones that worked in the family and the wife stayed at home and took care of the house and

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb, was told that he was too stupid to learn anything. Beethoven's teachers said he was hopeless, and he composed four of his greatest works when he was completely deaf, and Oprah came from poverty (Nick Horton). There has been an innumerable amount of celebrities that failed before they became successful. Although you probably won't experience the same things that Oprah or Michael Jordan experienced, you can still succeed through failure. Despite what others may think, failure leads to success in today's society because it pushes someone to work harder to prove to others that he/she can succeed and because it teaches people a lot about themselves. Failure pushes someone to work harder to prove to other people that he/she can succeed. Kayla Way and Courtney Way are prime examples. Kayla and Courtney both got pregnant in high school and a lot of people told them that they would never amount to anything. "Only one–third of adolescent mothers will graduate high school, and only slightly over one percent of those will earn a college degree before they turn thirty" (Teen Pregnancy Statistics). Water Dams

Most dams are designed to accomplish a variety of functions, which include flood control, flat water recreation, hydropower electricity generation, and water supply. Although these seem like good reasons for the existence of dams, this type of constructions bring greater negative effects than good ones. The "environment effects of dams include loss of land and biological resources to inundation, reservoir sedimentation and downstream erosion, and hydrological changes unfavorable to many native or desirable species." Dams just strangle rivers and the perfect example of the damage dams cause to rivers is what is happening to the Mekong River in Asia.

China and Laos in particular have argumented about the potential the river can give them.

China insists that the dams, created to give energy to cities in the province of Yunnan, wont damage the Mekong. And Beijing insists that the dams will be of benefit to countries south of the damn because it will equilibrate the flow of the river by controlling the quantities of water to be flown during droughts and flowd seasons. But people who oppose to this project ask what will happen if china is under a huge drought?

My world is an exciting and thrillful ride nearly each and every day. When it comes to my life nothing ever appears to be boring. Whether I am doing something with my family or within my community or spending time at school there is never a dull moment. At school I could be leading my class in discussion. I could be volunteering at local businesses in my community. Or, simply helping my little brother with his math homework. Nevertheless these are all activities that help shape me and the dreams that I will strive towards.

My family, for example, help me develop my character throughout my childhood and into my adolescence. Each one of them help me learn different things through our relationships. My little brother , who is eleven, teaches me how to be caring and supportive to someone who is younger and to not anger so easy when he makes mistakes. He tells me all the time how he looks up to me and wants to be like me when he grows up. Then my little sister always looks to me for protection. She is the full blown princess of the family and takes complete advantage of it as well she is spoiled to the core. Yet, this teaches me to relax and have fun. By being her metaphorical knight in shining armor and not caring how people look at me as a play with her it teaches me that I can be myself I do not have to fit into the social norms. Lastly there is my mother, who does everything for me, she is the backbone of our family and supports us no matter what. She is always there to take us where we need and want to go and she always makes sure if we wanna do something that we are able to. My mother is nothing more than a hard–working woman with dedication and drive to provide for her children. This has been so amazing to me because she has been the perfect role model to me and has always been my supportive shoulder to lean on.

My community was not, at first, a main priority in my life. But, once I started volunteering I felt great being able to help people in need. Whether it was going to help with the second harvest food bank in town to help however I could or going to middle school athletic events to keep book at a track meet. These types of positive change in and throughout my community made me ecstatic just to be a

My Dreams In My Life

Urban Life vs Rural Life! People always wonder about the similarities and differences between living in the city and living in the countryside. The majority of people in the world now, prefer to live in cities rather than countrysides. It has been known for a long time that life in the country is different from life in the city. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages, regarding the way a person chooses to live in either of those places.

There are many reasons for living in the city, but the main reasons are entertainment, transportation, opportunities, and being able to experience ethnic diversity. The city provides huge shopping malls, beautiful resorts and amazing views. Time Square is another popular attraction, surrounded by huge buildings, glowing billboards and the amazing talented street performers making the city come to life. A very unique feeling that would probably be found only in a city. For those who do not go to the city for fun, are usually looking for a job. Cities are number one in employment, finding a job wouldn't be too hard because of the many people living there and of all the services needed. There has been many successful doctors, publishers, entrepreneurs, lawyers and architects. In a bustling sometimes, overpopulated city everything would need to be bunched up and close together. A city is always a way to receive a better opportunity. Colleges and schools are almost always successful and give bright, well–educated students amazing opportunities. A majority of the U.S.population lives in incorporated places or cities, although these areas only make up a small fraction of the U.S. land area, according to a new report released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. The percentage of the population living in cities in 2013 was highest in the Midwest and West at 71.2 percent and 76.4 percent, respectively. (TheUnited States Census Bureau, Us Census Bureau) Nevertheless, through advantages arise disadvantages. For example, cities also attract thieves, picket potters, gangs, and hackers. Thieves and picket potters have many targets. Gangs would easily blend in and avoid cops. Hackers are finding easier ways to hack individuals by one simple word. Writing Through Literary Genres

Ignorance Is Bliss Is knowledge always something good to have? In mary Shelley's gothic novel, Frankenstein, knowledge was the source of great pain and suffering for many of the characters included in the story. The novel supported the idea that ignorance is bliss through both Victor Frankenstein and his monster only receiving pain and destruction in their quests for knowledge. Frankenstein and his monster, each with everlasting hate for each other, were more alike than they were aware. Had Victor just stayed in Geneva Switzerland with his friends and family instead of venturing off into Ingolstadt Germany he could have avoided all the tragedies in the book and lived a long and happy life. Had the monster...show more content...

By looking at Victor and his monster and their pursuits for knowledge, it can be seen that knowledge does not actually bringhappiness which is important because had they not gained the knowledge they sought, Victor and his monster would have ended up living much happier and longer lives. Before leaving to Ingolstadt Germany in a quest for the information to create life, Victor Frankenstein was a happy person. Victor in his early years lived in peace and happiness with his family, sailing and exploring the beauties of Switzerland. It was not until Victor began work on creating his monster that his life started to change for the worse. Victor described what he believed a perfect person should do saying "A human being in perfection ought always to preserve a calm and peaceful mind and never allow a passion or a transitory desire to disturb his tranquility. I do not think that the pursuit of knowledge is an exception to this rule," (50). Victor on arriving at Ingolstadt had that calm and peaceful mind he described but allowed his passion for wanting the knowledge necessary to

2. What are values and norms and what is a moral dilemma?

To answer this question I will divide the question in three parts. Starting with what values are. Values are an absolut or relative and ethic value of a person. Values can be defined as a wide preference for specific actions.

The assumption of those can be a basic form for ethic handling. A Valuesystem is a set of consistense values and measures. A principale value is a fundamental on which values and measures ofintegrity are based.

Some values are physiologically determined and used usually for avoiding fysical pain or for looking for fun. Other values are subjective, they are different for every individu or for different religions. These values are more based on religion and their beliefs. Different values are ethical /moral vales, ideological values, social values and...show more content...

Then the last part of this question, moral dilemmas. But what is a Moral dilemma?. A Moral Dilemma is that two well–known cases conflict with eachother. In each case you have moral reasons to do each of the two actions, but it is not possible to do both. This is what you call moral dilemmas.

What is really a common factor for moral dilemmas is, is that it is kind of required to do both actions, in this situation you can choose one of them but you can't do both, so you start feeling that you failed, because both actions are important for you. No matter which one you will choose you always have the feeling that you failed or did something wrong. So to recap this all a Moral Dillema is a Dillema between two factors/choices that are both important to you and whatever you choose you will always think you made the wrong choice.

As children we are taught to always show respect to those around us. We are taught to never say no to an adult, to listen and to use manners to everyone around us. But as we grow older we develop a sense of rebelliousness, and an urge to question every single moral and value we have learned.

So the burning question arises: Should respect be given to everyone no matter what, or is it something that needs to be earned? I believe that respect is a given. Like a natural right, it is born with it, and it is your choice whether you can gain more or lose it. People around the world have been fighting all around the world for equality. Isn't that the same as respect? We have been fighting for respect this whole time, so why should we suddenly discriminate every organism on this planet. Everyone has a side of insecurity and if we keep making people feel ashamed of that, there would be no respect. Respect is what separates me from you, him from her. But shouldn't everyone get respect no matter the case? From CEOs to retail workers?

According to The Positivity Solution, an organization dedicated to spread positivity, dignity, and kindness, "Rudeness is often a by–product of a lack of respect. Not to sound like Captain Obvious here, but most people don't choose to be rude and disrespectful to people who they respect, do they?". What they are trying to convey is that people often don't give everyone the respect they deserve. When we do not give people respect, we lose respect for ourselves and become rude in other people's eyes. As we learn to realize that everyone deserves respect, we can see that even the most small things can earn our attention. If you are consciously deciding to give people respect or not, that is a mistake. Why do people need your acceptance to be treated equally? They do not. And if you are making a choice based on shallow judgment, you are destroying the love and kindness that others have shown to you. To be critical like that is unacceptable and wrong universally. "A person's a person, no matter how small" said Dr. Suess, an award winning children's books writer. Everyone wants to be accepted, some people at all costs. Have any of you ever procrastinated before? If the answer was yes, you would not be the only one. We all procrastinate from time to time. Statistics showed that procrastination affects over 20 percent of the population, and 85 to 95 percent of students have problems associated with procrastination. All the time, not doing the important task when we know we should can lead to anxiety, guilt, stress, and even depression. In the reality, the activities we were doing while procrastinating are never fun or relaxing because we know we should be doing work. So,procrastination is so horrific, then why do we do it? Therefore, today, there are two subtopics procrastination that I want to talk about which are the reasons why we procrastinate and some strategies on how to avoid it. Now, let's talk about what makes us procrastinate. There are three broad categories that most of typical reasons for procrastination could fall into which are resentment, fear of success, and fear of failure. First, how does procrastination express resentment? Taking away autonomy from people who think they are competent can cause procrastination due to dissatisfaction. For example, in the workplace, you may procrastinate when you feel your job doesn't allow enough autonomy, when you don't see the significance of your contribution, when you don't get much feedback about your work, or when you feel frustrated, resentful, or bored with a task. Also, the feeling of gaining control over the rules or

What is home? If one looks in a dictionary the answer would come out to be, "The place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household." However, for anyone who has had an actual home, they would know that such a term goes much beyond its concrete description. It is an impassioned aspect filled with values and foundation of nurturing. A home is not just an abode built to live in; in fact, that is just a definition of a house. Home is a place where one not only feels comfortable, but a place they look forward to opportunely live in every day. A home is built not by bricks or wood, but with the bond of family. Family is what makes a house a home; this statement is undeniably precise. A person could have every material entity in the entire world, but it would mean nothing if he does not have someone to share it with. In other words, home is also semantically related to sharing the happiness, grief, and material things with one's family. A home gives people a place to care about the people that mean the most to them. It is a place to tell amusing tales, a good story, or make memorable memories with one another. Furthermore, home is more than a place; it is a feeling. It is a feeling of contentment and happiness that they share with the ones they love. Moreover, home is when one knows they are with people that can drive them insane in a second, and the same people can make them happy in a second as well. Home means that no matter what one is going through, no matter how challenging life gets, there will be someone looking out for them. One knows that a place is their home when they are comfortable enough to present a true description of themselves, because they know that they will receive definitive acceptance. It is a sanctuary for them where they can do anything they please and not be judged afterwards. It is where one can share the absurdity of their day without any remorse or repercussions. The reason why people say that a person only has one true home is because one will
