SRQ Wins Sports Tourism Award

F

it941 is cheering the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources department for receiving the Excellence in Sports Tourism Award by the Florida Recreation and Park Association.

Presented this past summer by the Florida Sports Foundation, the honor was in recognition of the 79 sporting events that Parks and Rec hosted in 2015, which the FRPA says made a direct local economic impact of more than $33 million.

Grant for Y Youth Shelter

A

meriprise Financial has continued its longtime support of the Sarasota YMCA’s Youth Shelter with a $5,000 grant.

The Y Youth Shelter provides temporary housing and safe care for Southwest Florida youth ages 10 to 17 who have run away, are experiencing family conflict or have been locked out of their homes. The Y Youth Shelter is available as a resource 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Funds from Ameriprise Financial provide vital direct-service staff and program support to engage homeless, runaway or at-risk youth and their families. The Y Youth Shelter rescues youth from crisis, giving them a safe place to live. In addition, the Y Youth Shelter works to transition youth to a more permanent and safe living situation aimed at reunification with family, when possible.

Pro Basketball Comes to 941

T

he recently-founded Sarasota Manatee professional basketball team puts the 941 on the court thanks to tech entrepreneur Andre Spivey and partner Mike Pitts, a longtime basketball trainer.

Started just five months ago, in August of 2016, the Sarasota Manatee team is part of the professional men’s basketball league, the American Basketball Association (ABA).

The ABA, originally established in 1967, merged with the NBA in 1976 with such powerhouse players as Julius Irving and Moses Malone and many others that ended up as NBA players. The ABA was reformed in 2000 in partnership with the NBA. Andre says that while some players for the semi-pro league are recruited globally, “We have found great talent in the area.”

“Unlike most ABA teams, we are focused on local talent rather than pulling from overseas,” Andre says.

The Sarasota Manatee team played its first games in December and its schedule includes dates though March including the Southwest Warriors Jamboree and the Florida All-Stars and a full slate of games are set for fall 2017.

Success Story Battle of the Gyms

E

ddie Santiago was 425 pounds when he made a lifechanging decision.

“I was getting sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Eddie says now. He had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and he says, was “uncomfortable in my own body.”

Plus, he wanted to find “someone special” to share his life with and raise a family. “How was a good woman going to even like me, let alone have kids with me? I wanted a family; kids to have their dad, healthy and full of life so I could see them grow and have their own kids.”

So Eddie committed to losing weight. He accomplished that, he says, by changing his lifestyle, eating right, incorporating cardio and weight training and trusting the process.” Eddie was determined.

Today Eddie weighs 255 pounds having shed 170 pounds.

“It wasn’t easy, but anything worth having is never easy.” And his success convinced him to give up his longtime career in the mortgage business and since he was always “great in sales,” began a new career in selling gym memberships.

“People were actually inspired because I was living proof that it can be done. I was a walking billboard on what proper nutrition and workout program can do for you.”

Eddie’s best advice for folks trying to lose weight is simple.

“You have to have patience, you have to trust the process, and you must never give up,” Eddie says. “Nothing will change until you change it.”

he Super Sprint Triathlon Team Relay Challenge and Individual Super Sprint Challenge is slated for March 26, 2017 at Nathan Benderson Park.

A Hiit series presented

by Advanced Sports and Wellness, The highintensity team challenge event is an opportunity for gyms, clubs and wellness franchises to compete against one another with only one team crowned champion.

Organizers say this is “no ordinary triathlon.” Teams consist of two men and two women. This mixed relay format is “new and is by far the most thrilling, exciting, and fast paced sport to participate in and to watch,” organizers say. Each athlete completes a high intensity sprint triathlon of swimming, biking and running, before tagging off to their next teammate.

“It's non-stop action from the very beginning. The pace is to the extreme and is survival of the fittest,” according to organizers. A gym can have as many teams as they like but switching members once each have signed up is not permitted. Each participant will have a chip and will have to conquer this high intensity 200-yard swim sprint, then an all-out 4-mile bike ride, then finish “with everything they have left in a mad” 1.5 mile run to tag their teammate at the finish line.

The team relay begins at 10 a.m.

The individual race, which begins at 8 a.m., is open to the public from age 16 and up and is also a Super Sprint Triathlon. The individual race is “great for people who are trying their very first triathlon, or just want a great workout and love to compete.” The individual race will include age groups for men and women, determined by the number of participants and their ages. Medals will be given to the top three male and female in each age bracket.

The ‘Art’ of a Boxer

A

fter 15 years in the ring, with an impressive 17 wins in 20 ring match-ups held in Florida, Germany, Texas, and other locations, Sarasota’s Aaron Jaco will box his last professional fight this spring.

“One more, then done; like a curtain call to feel that excitement one more time,” says the super middle-weight owner of Uppercut, which will be celebrating a decade of training and helping keep folks fit in the 941.

But he’s not leaving the art of boxing because art has always been as close to his heart. “I have been into art since I was a young boy,” Aaron says. “My father saw my talent at a very young age and always pushed me to do more.”

And while Aaron won numerous art contests and exhibitions and attended the Booker High School of the Visual Arts, he admits, “I hated it.” But that didn’t stop him from painting, he just picked up a brush between boxing as an amateur and pro and then, opening and running a successful gym. When his daughter was born in 2007, it was her artistic curiosity that really got him back into painting.

“I don’t think I have a particular style at all. I enjoy painting things I'm passionate about, my daughter, my wife (Heather, also his partner at Uppercut) and boxing photos and icons are always cool,” he says of his work, all large canvasses of about four feet by four feet. Aaron has sold a number of his paintings and ruminates that painting may be his “second career.”

CRYOTHERAPY IS SUPER

Translated from the Greek, cryotherapy literally means the ‘cold cure.’ Likely used as early as the 1600s, it wasn’t until 1978 when the first whole body cryo chamber was introduced in Japan. But aficionados of the popular therapy can thank scientists in Poland, who in the late 1990s recognized the physical healing benefits of ‘Ganzkoperkaltetherapie’ or whole body cold therapy. Myriad research studies by European scientists have been published that validated the benefits of whole body cryotherapy for treating illnesses and injury. Physical therapists routinely employ ice to treat inflammation and pain so the leap to whole body cold therapy isn’t such a stretch. The science is solid that the ‘cold cure’ is effective, and especially so for athletes or fitness devotees use after workouts.

Just ask the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs purchased three cryo chambers for its players use as a “recovery edge.” The 90-member team was greeted this past summer by the newly-

installed cryo saunas at their headquarters. According to Bucs’ writer and senior editor Scott Smith, the cyro chambers are an “Advanced alternative to the cold tubs ubiquitous to every team facility. By making use of this technology, Buccaneer players can replace a 20-25 minute soak in a cold tub with a 150-second cryo session, and with ultimately much better results,” turning back the clock “on how long it takes to treat dozens of sore players.”

Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) is an alternative to localized icing for illness, injury and inflammation. The treatment has people exposed to extremely cold air – negative 150°F to 250°F – for 1 to 3 minutes. The chamber (or sauna, as it’s also referred) uses either liquid nitrogen or refrigerated air. While inside the cyro machine, a person’s head is above the top of the chamber. Minimal clothing is worn; shorts or undergarments; gloves; a woolen headband to cover ears; and perhaps a nose and mouth mask. Specific garments may vary based

on client preference and the facility requirements. Garments cannot include any metal (think underwire bras!) and must be completely dry (anything wet or metal will freeze instantly.)

At HYDR8 owners say their venue is the only one in Sarasota with the Impact XL cryotherapy machine. Hydr8 introduced the machine on Facebook Live in late November and as of press time, more than 120 “athletes and everyday people” have tried out Hydr8’s cryo chamber, co-owner Fernando Vega says.

And Vega says some clients have used the machine to assist with pain management “as an alternative so they can get off their pain medications.”

Weighing-In on New Year’s ow many New Year’s resolutions do you think you’ve made over the years? And of those, how many have you stuck to? Not surprisingly, the number one New Year’s resolution made is to lose weight and get fit. Or fitter; even people in good shape determine to do better -- lose more weight, build muscle, and increase strength and performance.

the challenge then is committing to the change. Write down your goals and the steps you’ll take to realize them. Make a plan for how to deal with challenges so you don’t just give up.

Keep track of what you’re doing with a journal, for example.

And make sure to enlist help be it a friend or family member or perhaps by joining a class or gym, NIH says.

As unsurprising as the number one resolution is, so too is this: according to Statistic Brain, nearly half of Americans make resolutions, around 46 percent, with losing weight at the top of the list. But some 49 percent of us have “infrequent success” with those resolutions and worse, 25 percent fail completely. But losing weight is just one of a number of resolutions that are inextricably tied to one another: getting more exercise, eating healthier, decreasing stress, getting better sleep, quitting smoking or cutting back on alcohol, for example. All are linked in that they represent a lifestyle change.

So if that’s your resolution, to live a heathier life overall, here are myriad suggestions for how to stay on track.

Measurable. Once there’s a specific goal, make sure it’s measurable. For example, tracking weight loss or steps walked on a smart phone app.

Resolutions Attainable. Don’t make that goal too difficult to reach or too easy, for that matter. Is this something you can actually do? If you want to lose 10 pounds a month, that’s 2.5 pounds per week. Is that do-able? Make sure before setting that goal because a goal too far could result in failure. And if you shoot for a fitness goal that you know is far too easy for you, like walking 200 steps a day; that will certainly not motivate.

Making it fun, if possible, can also be a great motivator. Being held Accountable. Having a friend participating with you is a great way to hold you accountable, Her, too.

Relevant. Set goals that are important to you, not one that another may be pressuring you to achieve. Let’s be Realistic: If your goals are not good for you or will not motivate you, then they’re not worth pursuing. It could be a set-up for failure.

Time. Have a starting date and an end date. Having a deadline is at once a challenge and will help to motivate you.

Rewarding yourself at the end date is a good idea, too; the proverbial stick and carrot.

So, come up with some reachable SMART goals, whether it’s adding another workout day or subtracting calories make the goals ones you can achieve. Make it work.

Eating a diet that provides a steady flow of glucose will guarantee you have the energy to focus. After glucose, the second major source of fuel for your brain is oxygen. Exercise, especially in the morning, can provide four additional hours of meaningful work.

Fewer sick days Showing up both physically and mentally can accomplish your health and wealth goals. Consuming nutrient-dense foods, abstaining from empty calories, and limiting stimulants will support a healthier immune system. Eating a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables will provide essential phytonutrients as well as a slowly-digested supply of glucose, both which are essential for keeping you not just healthy but also sharp as a tack. Processed carbohydrates should be limited or eliminated entirely due to their ability to raise blood glucose, increase fat storage, and suppress your immune system.

Managing stress Experiencing stress can trigger anxiety, depression and your ability to focus. Eating well not only improves your quality of life but provides ammo for when the pressure is on. When you are under stress, remember that healthy foods can be your best ally.

BOXTRIBE GAMES: THE PEOPLE'S COMPETITION » Ellie Mae Johnson escribed as the “People’s Competition,” the BoxTribe Games slated for Feb. 11 and 12 at Feld Entertainment Studios in Palmetto promises to be unlike any you’ve seen before.

That’s the theme,” says Jerson Daganzo founder and owner of BoxTribe and BoxTribe Games.

“It is all about the fitness journey we take each and every day and promoting that fitness is important on a competition floor as well as it is to our every day activities,” he says.

The BoxTribe Games in Manatee County is a singular competition; a two-day, three-event competition designed to allow everyday athletes to have “their turn to be in the spotlight … on the big stage.”

The BoxTribe Games, the “People's Competition” was “inspired by a community of driven individuals that uses fitness to take their physical and mental limits to the next level.”

And Jerson says BoxTribe hopes these games will “lead to a series of competitions linked together.”

“So what we are trying to do is get to a point where people are permitted to attend these competitions throughout the whole year starting with the BoxTribe Games,” Jerson says.

The BoxTribe Games will be held at Feld Entertainment at 800 Feld Way in Palmetto on Feb. 11 and 12. Saturday Feb. 11 will feature the two-person team competition. The divisions for the Tribal Initiation are: Beginners; Scaled; RX; Masters; and Teens. Sunday Feb. 12 will be the Kinetik Collective Affili-

ate Invitational, a four-person team (two males and two females) competition which will highlight all the affiliates in the community. A USAW sanctioned Olympic Weightlifting meet will also be taking place throughout the whole weekend.

“If you have never competed in the past but you love our sport, this is the competition for you,” BoxTribe says. “Stop watching other athletes compete and allow yourself to experience what it feels like to be an athlete on the big stage. Don't let all your hard work be unnoticed.”

hether training for a marathon, a long distance bicycle race or simply wanting to play longer stretches in a casual game of basketball, all athletes seek additional energy and strength to help maximize their enjoyment and performance. Natural options abound that can help the body prevent injuries while also increasing recovery time from injuries, if they occur. Certainly most athletes understand the amount of exercise and sport specific training invested by high level athletes. But proper nutrition is often overlooked when crafting a plan for athletic success. Taking supplements to enhance a healthy, balanced diet gives an athlete the best opportunity to perform - and feel - their best.

For example, otherwise healthy, fit athletes who take a regular, moderate dose of spirulina typically enjoy enhanced endurance. Spirulina is a blue-green algae containing a protein that creates an environment conducive to developing muscle mass. spirulina help combat muscle fatigue. Spirulina also contains natural stimulants that promote muscle tone. It restores energy and vitality, curbs fatigue and reduces muscle cramps. Studies also have indicated a slight upgrade in power among regular exercisers who take spirulina as part of their regular diet.

Chlorophyll is an antioxidant found in leafy green vegetables such as collard greens, turnip greens and kale. It's also concentrated in wheatgrass, barleygass, contains vitamins A, C and E and naturally cleans the colon. In addition, chlorophyll contains magnesium which has a calming effect on the body, reducing stress on muscles and the nervous system. Chlorophyll binds toxins in the gut, removing dioxins, benzene and aflatoxin from the body, which in turn increases energy and allows the body to perform at an optimal level. aybe it’s the zombie apocalypse or just woefully lost in the woods as the sun is setting, or maybe it’s a perfectly civilized and well-planned hiking or camping trip, having the right survival gear – just in case – is a must.

And some survival skills wouldn’t hurt either.

“Be it a hurricane or when during an awesome wilderness adventure you take a wrong turn and find yourself lost, you’ll be glad you were prepared,” Environeers manager Brian Luther advises.

The longtime Sarasota-based camping, hiking and all-around everything-outdoor -store carries you-name-it gear to outfit a trip into the wilds. Depending on the geography, your list of must-haves may vary, but Brian suggests the following basics to survive in the elements: a compass; fire-starter (waterproof matches or similar); small, eight-by-eight foot or 10-by-10-foot, 42 JAN/FEB 2017

tarp for shelter (a tent would be ideal of course, but in the event there was no plan to spend the night in the woods…); 20 to 40-feet of P-cord (parachute cord); a solid knife and a way to sharpen it; three to five days’ worth of dried foods; water and/or a water filtration device; a small survival handbook and notebook; first-aid kit; small handsaw or hatchet and pack in which to carry it; and a small pot with a lid.

Environeers also features outdoor hiking, camping and survival classes including orienteering and navigation, knot-tying, outdoor cooking and many more, some of which Brian says “can get pretty rugged.”

Backpacking 101 begins with gear basics; from what you need for what kind of trip to learning how to correctly use that gear and then a weekend hike followed by a one-week

trip. In Orienteering 1 and 2, Environeers most popular class, students learn to master the use of a compass for directionfinding. “Once you’re comfortable,” Brian says, “we take it to the next level and go out on a moonless night-sky.”

So you have the right gear and the skills, let’s hit the trail.

Environeers sponsors rugged off-trail Florida trips “to get out and experience wild Florida.” Trips include backpacking the Florida Trail, Myakka River State Park, and the Everglades where Brian says, “We spend the entire time in ankle to knee deep water and camping in hammocks.”

A number of excursions are planned for the coming months, so you may have a chance to test out your survival plans and skills. Hopefully not, but just in case.

In February it’s Cayo Costa State Park where trekkers will journey by boat to barrier islands and hike mangrove swamps and pine forests (and beaches, of course). March brings the aforementioned Everglades hike, a trip you certainly want to be prepared for, with a hammock a must. May brings a backroad trail hike deep in the Ocala National Forest on the Florida Trail and a five-day sojourn on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. An August backpacking adventure in the Rocky Mountains, specifically several thousand feet toward the heavens at Maroon Bell-Snowmass Wilderness in Colorado where, Brian says, “With an elevation change of several thousand feet and in such a short distance traveled – 27 to 30 miles –, this trip will leave you breathless and from not just the altitude.” A September voyage to hike the Dolomites, the lower Alps found in the mountainous region of northeastern Italy is planned for September. Hikers, donning helmets and attached by harnesses, hike the southern Alps on Via Ferrata, Italian for Iron Gate; basically a fixed protection climbing path.

There are workouts and then there are literal ass-kicking workouts. Boxing, kick-boxing, mixed martial arts, and Kava Maga are some here in the 941 that are guaranteed to kick some butt.

Johnny 'Speed' Garcia grew up doing karate and got his first-degree black-belt while in high school. He then started boxing and kickboxing. Pilates Reformer Level 2 – 7:458:45am. Level 2 is for those who have a very good grasp of the basics, (Level 1 is a pre-requisite) and want to be challenged with tougher exercises. This is a fast-paced class working towards increasing stamina as well as flexibility and strength. The aim at this level is for movement to become more flowing and dynamic so the body becomes evenly strengthened and toned. Tabata Protocol – Noon-12:45pm.

Tabata training produces a maximal calorie burn followed by an increased metabolism that burns calories hours after the session. It involves eight continuous bouts of 20 second work periods, followed by 10 seconds of rest periods for a single exercise.
