Ancient Greeks pursued an education in order to be better citizens and because they valued the mind and thinking. In an article in Change, Arthur Levine and Jeanette Cureton quote John Henry Cardinal Newman who wrote The Idea of a University in the mid 1800's. "His ideal was a residential community of students and teachers devoted to the intellect. To him a college was 'an alma mater, knowing her children one by one, not a foundry, or a mint, or a treadmill.' " To Newman, a university was a gathering–place for those who wanted to enrich their lives through learning, not a place where students could be molded. Is this the case today? Focusing on this university as opposed to other state schools was preferable due to a large number of students and the diversity of the student population as compared to other state schools within the state. Additionally, this University has 3 campuses (one in the southern part of the state, one in the central part and one in the northern part) thus providing a representative sample of the state with regard to characteristics including socioeconomic status, race, and gender. This study utilized secondary data analysis. The data was extracted from the larger data set through the University's Department of Institutional Research (IR). The role of this department is to collect, analyze and report on data for institutional planning, policy development and represents the university as an arm which disseminates public information services, in order to meet the needs of the university community and external stakeholders. For the purpose of this paper, the data was then organized and statistics were calculated based on the identified independent and dependent variables.

I disagree with Bloom because he encourages the idea of taking extra irrelevant classes to achieve the experience of education. It usually takes about four years to earn a bachelors degree. There are many courses such as English, math, history, art, etc. that a student must go through before they get to start on the classes that concentrate on their intended major. These basic courses are part of a program called general education. After completing general education (which usually takes about two years), the students can then begin to study for their degree. Colleges should abandon the law of students having to take general education courses because the courses are irrelevant to their field of study, unnecessary and a waste of time. Instead of taking the extra courses, students can simply meet their needs of a degree in a shorter period of time. Also, Bloom not only that wants students to take general education courses, he wants them to further their education by taking advanced irrelevant courses. Therefore, in their future, they would have numerous opportunities for a better career. Because if a job is not right for the student, he would have other choices to obtain a new job.

Higher education is the greatest tool that can benefit a society, granted that universities can bring a sense of personal accomplishment and general knowledge. Reflection Of Higher Education

An intersectional reflection of my dichotomous relationship with higher education is what fuels my desire to pursue a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. As a first–generation college student, earning a Bachelor's and Master's degrees profoundly altered the trajectory of my family out of years of generational poverty. As a result of embracing highereducation, I possess the ability to think critically and creatively, with a passion and hunger for lifelong learning. Contrarily, the experience also left some biological, psychological, and social scarring.

Macroaggressions, tokenism, and implicit bias have all contributed to the way that I now live, learn, and work in the world. While these experiences did not prevent the completion of my education, it has led others to abandon the pursuit, and certainly presents an enigma to many colleges and universities around the country eager to recruit and retain scholars that identify as Black/African–American, first–generation, and/or low socioeconomic status. As a woman from a very long line of passionate learners, it is only right for me to continue the tradition. On my mother's side of the family, a majority of my elder relatives had completed some form of higher education. My great–grandmother was a certified seamstress, my grandmother and aunt are certified nurses, my uncle received his degree in chemical engineering, and my mother and father received their degrees in liberal arts. Growing up with educated, successful, well–traveled African–American role models throughout my life provided me with the drive and inspiration to pursue my higher education as well! If life was an equation we could solve, then we, as a race, would never survive, people would not be able to adapt, and we would be unable to make further progress. It is not ones ability to recall what has been taught it is there ability to teach it to others. It is those people who know how to use the knowledge bestowed on them that will survive. In Dewey's "Thinking in Education" he speaks a lot of knowledge; he states that "knowledgeВ… [is] indispensable(305)." Dewey puts a large emphasis on how knowledge is gained through experience and not through reading textbooks alone.
