"Teaching is a beautiful job; as it allows you to see the growth day by day of people entrusted to your care. It is a little like being parents, at least spiritually. It is a great responsibility."– Pope Francis

Through the various classes that I have been able to take here at Franciscan University and through field work at Pugliese West Elementary school this semester. I have been able to slowly but surely develop a personaleducation of philosophy that I hope to implement into my future classroom and the students that will be entering into them. Until my time is done here at Franciscan and I continue on in becoming an educator, I will continually prepare myself for the different dynamics that my classroom will have, all depending on the children entering. Whether it being me just having an inclusive classroom or a classroom with kids with multiple disabilities. I feel that my philosophy will stay the same either which way it may go.

In preparing to become a teacher, I've been told by cooperating teachers, superiors whom I look up to, as well as through multiple classes that I've had the privilege to take. That it is beyond important that we are aware of our student's cognitive growth, physical development, as well as their social, and emotional needs. Through the learning of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, I will be able to see where their needs are being met and where they aren't. If the students' needs aren't being met I will be able to pinpoint it and help in with fixing

Teaching Is A Beautiful Job Essay

To be a professional teacher, it takes skill to train young minds. Education is extremely important to go through. Teachers have many different philosophies to choose from when teaching in a classroom. Out of the five philosophies, I ranked the highest in Essentialism and Progressivism. Both of these philosophies are taught entirely different from each other. Essentialism is teacher–centered learning and expresses the teaching by the core curriculum. Progressivism is student–centered learning and expresses the teaching by doing group work. I believe that a classroom should be divided between using both philosophies. I believe that a teacher should stick to the core curriculum, but a teacher should also let the students learn by working together in small groups. The teacher is still giving lectures in front of the classroom, but there is still group work throughout the week. From experience, I think a combination of both would make the perfect classroom setting. When a classroom is both teacher–centered and student–centered, students will gain a better education in my opinion. The purpose of education is to further the knowledge of a student. Education is meant to teach students the essentials of education and to create a better understanding of real–world experiences. From the philosophies, I agree with, education is working towards students with their knowledge and living in society. Education needs to help students to not only become smarter, but also be able to work in

A teacher also devotes their lives to helping families, and communities in need of higher educational programs and facilities. Teacher Licensure In the community teaching is a very valued and prestige profession but becoming a teacher requires numerous of licensure requirements. In my case I plan to teach elementary education, preferably kindergarten. The steps to becoming an elementary teacher have just as many requirements as any other grade levels or subject areas. The first step to becoming a licensed teacher is completing your Bachelors or Masters' degree. Endorsement course are extremely important to obtain all licensure requirements, endorsement courses consist of 12 English credits, 15 history or social science credits, 12 nature science credits, 12 math credits, 2 arts or music credit, and lastly 3 humanities credits. I believe that teaching is the most important profession in the world. How else can we continue to develop in such a technical world, or in any other way, for that matter? Without the transfer of knowledge to young minds, we will stagnate and wither as a world. Teaching is hope for better, more successful futures. Learning is hope for becoming better individuals, for gaining intelligence, and for implementing practical experiences in our future. Since we always tell our children that they should plan for their futures and work to realize those goals, the teaching profession should "practice what it preaches" by helping young people to reach those goals. Teaching reading during the past five years has been rewarding beyond my...show more content... But with a little ingenuity and a great deal of training, change has become easier for me as a reading teacher. Not only do professional activities lend themselves to opportunities to learn new ideas, they are also ways that we professionals can share our experiences–our victories and our defeats–with others, creating a bond and a network from which we all can gain support and advice when we need it. Since my time of training for the reading competencies, I have served on the school literacy team. In addition to setting goals and working to achieve those for our school as a whole, I have tried to mentor some of the younger teachers who did not teach reading the first year it was offered at our school. I have tried to be an inspiration, a cheerleader, and encourager. I have offered to help with their classes, to help with lessons, to offer supplies, or whatever other things I could do to serve as a sort of "cheerleader for reading" at my school. As a result, we now have several teachers who are also implementing those important reading strategies, and our school is indeed seeing the results from the test data. We're now a community of learners, rather than individual teachers doing our "own things." So, is professional development important? Most assuredly! Not only have I have learned new methods and strategies and how to improve them, but I have also shared them with my peers.

"All professions have an identifiable knowledge base. Teaching has no such knowledge base, therefore, it is not a profession" Discuss this statement.

There are different characteristics of what a profession entails of. Some characteristics, such as full graduate training are based on the more known professional modes such as law, medicine and engineering. The majority of critics have agreed on the similar aspects of an occupational group acquiring: a knowledge base, expertise in their field, a sense of autonomy and responsibility which makes them a profession. In regards to teaching, it has sufficient evidence to produce these requirements which enables them to be recognised as a profession in society.

For an occupation to become a profession they need to be able to produce these characteristics of uniqueness which will lead to increasing their identity in society. From what makes up a profession, teachers are able to; under this criterion with other additional features become what is called a profession.

Teachers andeducation have gone through changes in which their identity of being a profession has either been deprofessionalised or improved to suit society's and the occupation's needs. It has been increasingly more evident that teaching is a profession.

Throughout the history of teaching, there has been progress, which gives reason to consider that teaching is a profession. The "old teaching profession" (Sachs, 2003, p. 8) includes teachers being given an exclusive membership. This notion of membership means that only people within this occupational group are permitted. Membership becomes restricted to individuals who meet their standards, just like other professions such as doctors. The disadvantage of this was that it was too slow to react to the changing demands of society of inclusion and exclusion of individuals. Although teaching does have the traditional feature of professions, it also has the negative effect which, in end, brought the fall of the old teaching profession and introduced several improvements to identify teaching as a profession.

An improvement of teaching has

Why I Have Chosen the Teaching Profession When I think of becoming a teacher I would like to imagine or hope that I would be "turning the key" for a student of mine to become something great. I have been soul searching for many years now to have a better understanding of what I am suppose to do in my life. I have worked in so many jobs in so many areas but nothing was fulfilling my life with any amount of meaning. I found myself not wanting to go back the next day or wishing I were somewhere else. Well Iguess everyone does that is what I would tell myself.

At that moment you could say it was like the clouds parted and the sky opened. I realized at that very moment that I was put here on earth to be a teacher.

A teacher that cares about the random thoughts and dreams each child has throughout each day is what I want to be. Therefore, I decided to go back to school to continue my education. However, this time it would be different. I now knew what I wanted to be–a teacher. I laugh at myself for not realizing this sooner, I mean I had been teaching almost all my life. I had taught swimming lessons, coached high school volleyball, and was a camp counselor for years. I just was afraid to admit that I liked teaching, like I was afraid people would not take me serious enough. I guess when people do a variety of things with their life like I have, people start to think of them as not following through with things or not being dedicated. Nevertheless, I look at it like I was very dedicated; I was dedicated in my journey to discover myself. Why does anyone think that children at the young age of eighteen needs to decide what he or she wants to be for the rest of their life will never make any sense to me? It took me a little longer to figure

Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. It has not been easy but challenging and interesting. Unfortunately in this present job I have no colleagues, institution authorities or supervisors, which means anything I do in the classroom hardly ever provides me any feedback of what I am doing. Except of course for the eventual commentaries I receive from my students and the annual performance evaluation. Therefore I had this urgent necessity of obtaining some refreshment and reviewing of what I am doing in my classroom. I need to make a stop to reflect about how effective my teaching is. If the things I am doing are adequate and suitable to take my pupils to achieve their goal to communicate in the target language. Teaching in this context was at the beginning of the journey a frightening and stressing episode, first of all because I did not know anything about mining, geology, finance and accounting, just to mention some and not to make myself look like a complete ignorant. Secondly the atmosphere in a corporate has nothing to do with the informal ambience in an elementary school and thirdly but not least important, the students expectations and perceptions are not the same. Thus, I had to remake myself. Everything started when I was invited to work with them; I did the typical searching about the company and the leaders, anyone would do for that first good desirable impression one wants to give in the job interview. That was my first contact with the mining

Teaching as a Profession

Winston Churchill once said "Kites rise highest against the wind (1942)." Teachers must find enough determination to overcome the adversity, stress, and other factors that might be sending them the message to leave their job, and stick with it. A teaching profession has some positive benefits, but the negative aspects are enough to push people away from a career in this field. Looking in from the outside, a job as a teacher seems ideal. In what other profession do you have every weekend, holiday, and the whole summer off? This is enough to draw a lot of people to the job, but it is not glamorous enough to keep these new teachers around for long and this creates a shortage. There are many reasons causing this ...show more content...

Besides these examples, teachers are fleeing the scene across the country for many other reasons also.

Stress on the job is one of the main reasons that teachers leave. There are many causes of the stress that teachers encounter in their profession. For one, unrelenting students asking questions and complaining about grades pester them every day. Some teachers claim that it is the large size of classes and the inability to keep the full attention of their students. Other teachers point to the mixture of children with mental handicaps and the children who learn at a normal pace (Conley and Woosley, 2000). Stress can come from that because the teacher will have to slow their lesson plan to make sure the slower student can still gain as much knowledge as the rest of the class. This becomes more of a problem because the students with regular learning capabilities often become bored with the slow pace that the class is taking. Another factor that contributes to stress experienced by teachers is the overload of paperwork. This comes about when class sizes are large because the teacher will have an enormous amount of homework or tests to grade and it will take up a lot of their time. The last factor that contributes to their stress is the lack of association with their co–workers (Reising and Denlinger, 2002). Most of the day, teachers are confined to a classroom with nothing but

Throughout the numerous experiences I have had during my time at Benedictine University, I have learned different lessons and values that will prove important to my teaching career. The different courses, teachers, and schools that I had the opportunity to work with have helped me grow as an educator and provided me with the tools needed in order to be successful. My first observation experience was eye–opening. Upon my arrival to Providence Catholic High School, I only had basic knowledge about what it took to be an effective teacher. After working with many different teachers at this high school, it became evident that every teacher adopted their own style of teaching. I also began to understand that in order to be a wonderful...show more content...

I learned quickly that being an effective teacher is an art that takes time and devotion. Many times, teachers are not provided with the necessary materials in order to maintain the various learning styles in a classroom. It is up to the teacher to create an environment where students can succeed. This is a full time job, meaning that a teacher's work is not done once they leave the school. A teacher must contribute a significant amount of time and effort in order to see positive results in the school and in his or her own classroom. After observing my cooperating teacher's strategies and learning more about the profession, I knew that I was going in the right direction with my life. I took a significant amount of knowledge away from this experience and have continued to strive to be the type of educator that I was blessed to work with during this experience. .

During my second preclinical experience at Westview Hills Middle School, I learned the importance of cooperation and collaboration among teachers at a school. I was able to observe team and department meetings during this experience. It became clear that it is important for teachers to work together in order to provide a positive atmosphere at a school and in a specific department. Although it became obvious that personalities and teaching styles were different throughout the school, the teachers still acted professionally and used each other as resources in

The Teaching Profession Becoming an educator, especially in recent years has been considered one of the most demanding yet rewarding professions in the work force today. Teaching, with its benefits and intellectual motives has risen to become one of the most sought after jobs in society. But even after taking such rewards into consideration, one might want to analyze how time consuming and emotionally draining teaching young people may turn out to be. For the most part, teachers enjoy being able to work with young people in areas they may need guidance in. For some however, helping people is not a top priority when it comes to the teaching profession. Many jobs in society today do not offer the same types of benefits as ones in this area of work. Teachers for example, enjoy holiday vacations, weather delays or postponements and long summers in which they are paid for. Because teaching can become very time consuming, teachers usually welcome these breaks to usually spend time with family, travel or enjoy hobbies that they may not have been able to do while working. Paid time off is enough in itself to attract people towards a teaching occupation and regular salaries have been increasing in recent years as well. Over the past thirty to thirty–five years teacher's salaries have increased dramatically. It has been shown that the average school teacher, who works in the Northeast, will make anywhere between thirty–two and forty–five thousand dollars annually plus previously listed benefits. It is also probable that these average salaries are only going to increase with time, thus attracting many more to the field of teaching. With increased salaries, personal gratification, and enjoyable benefits being a teacher's main attractant, job security should be at the top of this list as well. If a teacher has been granted tenure after his or her first few years in their profession, he or she may not be removed from their

Essay on The Teaching Profession

Introduction The statement 'Teaching– reflections, questions, decisions' sums up what it means to be an effective teacher. Teachers are constantly making decisions about professionalism and ethics, teaching strategies, classroom management, and how to keep their students motivated. These decisions can have a major impact on student learning and how effective they are as teachers. Questioning is an essential–and one of the most important–instructional skills that a teacher can possess. Teachers need to be able to ask the appropriate types and levels of questions, such as the high and low order questions based on Bloom's taxonomy, as well as being skilled in responding to students answers. Teachers also need to be constantly evaluating and...show more content...

It is essential to encompass all of these behaviours and standards to succeed in being an effective teacher, as they are in an authoritative position and therefore need to lead by example. Teacher professionalism is also dependant on professional judgement, which involves making decisions on what is the right thing to do in certain situations, and ethical behaviour. The code of ethics is based on respect, caring, integrity, diligence and open communication (Groundwater–Smith, Ewing & Le Cornu, 2007, p. 332). Sometimes teachers can come across 'ethical dilemmas' which are complex problems that have more than one solution, and in turn, each solution has different advantages and disadvantages, therefore having no clear correct answer (Groundwater–Smith et al., 2007, p. 336). For example, "You observe another teacher publicly humiliate a child who is known to have previously bullied other students. What do you do? Do you say anything?" Ethical dilemmas require teachers to explore all situations and outcomes, and make a decision on what is right and just. Professionalism and ethics together, as relevant to teachers, demands all of these appropriate behaviours and responses in any circumstance (Whitton et al., 2010, p. 123). Constructivism Teaching techniques and strategies, such as proactive teaching, collaborative learning and constructivism, can also affect the quality of

Different people have varied views of teaching; some take it to be a vocation while some view it as a profession (Langford 51). Those saying teaching is a vocation, base their argument on the fact that anybody can be a teacher, from parents, relatives, peers, the media, the politician, the preacher and so forth, and this depends on the knowledge they are disseminating to their students. On the professional point of view teachers need professional qualifications and certifications for them to practice as tutors and instructors. In all these circumstances, as a vocation and as a profession, teaching has proved to be the mother of all professions. This paper explains how teaching has become the genesis of all professionalism.

Teachers are trained professionals, and more often than not their expertise extends beyond the classrooms where formal teaching is the norm. In most cases they accompany their students on field trips, they act as student disciplinarians and supervisors of extracurricular activities, they are managers of school functions, they are doctors to administer first aid in emergency cases and so forth. To the student a teacher wears several hats; a parent, a mentor, a friend, and so forth and from this diverse and unique relationship with the teacher the student can develop his career. All the known professions be they doctors, engineers, architects; have their origin in teaching. Teaching is the major mode of instruction through which such precious skills can be disseminated. From the first day a child steps into an institution with an aim to acquire formal education and be a responsible citizen in the society, he will encounter the teacher. The teacher will take the student then just a naГЇve child, and teach him how to read and write and help him organize his career life by pointing to him his strengths. The Reasons For Teaching As A Profession

Personal satisfaction, enjoyment of the subject matter, and the desire to work with young people has been the central reasons for individuals choosing teaching as a profession (Curtis & Wise, 2012). Teachers believe that by working with young people can make a difference in the lives of those young people. Teaching provides a sense of purpose. Teachers have the opportunity to build a student's confidence, help to shape dreams, provide redirection, and impact knowledge and wisdom on a daily basis (Fried, 2013). Teachers use their personalities and expertise to inspire and leave lasting impressions on students (Lewis, 2015). Teacher who are comfortable in theirschool environment believe that teaching allows them to stay connected with young people (Curtis & Wise, 2012). Teaching more variety than most professions, no two days are the same. Teachers enjoy the light bulb moment when students learn a new concept or connect concepts (Marsh, 2015). Teaching is view by many teachers as an energizing profession because of the challenges education bring. Teacher have to face and solve a multitude of problems on a daily basis, which in turn makes them life–long learners (Lewis, 2015). Thirty–two percent of teachers view teaching as fun because of the creativity they are allowed to bring into the classroom (Marsh, 2015). The love of their subject filters over into the classroom and to other teachers. Teachers also help to encourage other teachers to be more creative and

The Teaching Profession

Introduction: There is no doubt that the teaching profession is very important in molding the young minds to become the responsible citizens of the future. Many young people look forward to becoming successful teachers to educate the young generation.

Pros of teaching:

Teaching is a special calling. It is not a job well–suited to everyone. In fact, many new teachers leave within the first 3–5 years of teaching. However, there are many rewards that come with this often maligned career. Here are my top ten reasons why teaching can be a great profession.

1. Student Potential

4. Community Expectations

Everyone has an opinion of what a teacher should be doing. As a teacher you will have a lot of people pulling you in different directions. The modern teacher wears many hats. They act as educator, coach, activity sponsor, nurse, career advisor, parent, friend, and innovator. Realize that in any one class, you will have students of varying levels and abilities and you will be judged on how well you can reach each student by individualizing their education. This is the challenge of education but at the same time can make it a truly rewarding experience.

5. Emotional Commitment

Teaching is not a desk job. It requires you to "put yourself out there" and be on each day. Great teachers emotionally commit to their subject matter and their students. Realize that students seem to feel a sense of "ownership" over their teachers. They assume that you are their for them. They assume that your life revolves around them. It is not uncommon for a student to be surprised to see you behaving normally in everyday society. Further, depending on the size of the town where you will be teaching, you need to understand that you will be running into your students pretty much everywhere you go. Thus, expect somewhat of a lack of anonymity in the community.

Keys to being a Successful Teacher

The most successful teachers share some common characteristics. Here are the top six keys to being a successful teacher. Every teacher

Teaching As A Profession? Essay

1.Teaching as a Profession

1.What is a profession? (text book Ch 1 & 2)

2.Are early childhood teachers perceived as being a professional?

3.Standards, ethics and behaviour of a professional.

PROFESSION

The sociological approach to professionalism is one that views a profession as an organized group which is constantly interacting with the society that forms its matrix, which performs its social functions through a netywork of formal and informal relationships and which creates its own subculture requiring adjustments to it as a prerequisite for career success.

ATTRIBUTES OF A PROFESSION

Professionals occupy a position of great importance. In this society which is characterized by minute division of labor based upon technical specialization, you will discover that many important features of social organization are dependent upon professional functions. Professional activity is defin itely coming to play a predominant role in the life patterns of increasing numbers of individuals of both sexes, occccupying much of their walking moments, providing life goals, determining behavior and sharpening personality. It is no wonder, therefore that the phenomenon of professionalism has become an object of observation by sociologists. The provision of quality early childhood education and care (ECEC) has remained firmly on government agendas in recent years. Public awareness of gaps in provision and of insufficient quality in services has moved the issue of child care and after–school

Teaching Is A Challenging Profession

Teaching is a challenging profession because we are responsible for teaching students our content areas but also we must teach them how to learn. Once such challenge comes in the form of note taking. This is a learned skill and one that most students are unable to just figure out on their own. Students must be guided in note taking best practices. Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey (2004) remind teachers, "students must learn to focus on the important phrases, selecting on the key words that carry the meaning, even if some of the details are not yet scripted. This practice is also essential to good notetaking because one cannot write down everything one hears." (p 104)

I chuckled reading this quote because it is absolutely true. Students seem to fall into one spectrum or another– they either want to write down everything or choose to write down nothing. Teaching students note taking techniques is askill that will serve them well as they move through school, into higher education, or perhaps even in their jobs. I am cautious about the idea of forcing students to all taking notes in the same manner utilizing only one technique, such as Cornell. While this can be effective, students have multiple intelligences and what works for one student may not work for another. As such, I think students should be taught several methods and should be allowed to choose one method that works best for them.

Quickly approaching, the new school year brings opportunities to make changes

There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit–lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on theprofession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. After knowing the downfalls of teaching, the lack of interest in the profession is self–explanatory however, somebody has to overlook the negative for the educational success of America's children. Various efforts are being made to recruit and retain individuals to the wonderful world of education. Resources in the form of financial aid and grant programs as incentives are growing. These incentives offer money towards the completion of higher education in exchange for the recipients service. Programs are offered through colleges and universities, as well as by the state and national governments. Through the development of programs, private organizations have also begun lending their support to the profession.

There is competition among the profession to offer the best incentives in order to attract interest. The idea is to make the recruitment creative and appealing. In Massachusetts, as in other states, the incentive is a signing bonus. Upon signing, teachers receive a $20,000 bonus under the

The social distance between teachers and student are usually close and deep. For a teacher to teach effectively and proficiently, he or she needs to know deep in the life of students he or she is dealing with. This is very different in other fields of professionalism, for instance, the code of professionalism of physicians allow them to confine themselves to a specific ailment their patient is suffering from. They do not go into detail about the client's life. In teaching as a professional, reciprocity of effort is seen in teacher–student relation. The effort that is made by the teacher in class should be stipulated by the students in their results. In as much as the knowledge base policy may be the best, it does not clarify on what the teacher ought to teach. That is why standardization is required to achieve the best from both the student and the teachers. When standardizing the expertise in teaching, elaborate testing program is installed. The testing program is mainly designed to assess the performance of both the student and the teachers. After the performance of the teachers and the student has been attained, certain policy should be designed in such a way that best and brightest teachers are retained in the classroom and keep them close to the students. Since good teachers are usually promoted up the rank. This can be prevented by altering the salary of non–classroom personnel and thereby infusing more funds into the
