My Academic Goals And Research Interests

My academic goals and research interests have developed significantly over the course of my undergraduate studies at Susquehanna University. When I first arrived at Susquehanna I was a biology major and had dreams of medical school. However, by the end of freshman year, I began to develop an interest in neuroscience. Declaring a major in neuroscience allowed me to explore the components of biology I loved, while incorporating psychology and chemistry. My research interests developed from my exposure to the various areas of neuroscience through my internships, research experiences and courses. I am currently working on a research project, with the goal of gaining a more thorough understanding of the genes involved in lateral glial cell differentiation in the central nervous system of Drosophila. I conduct genetic crosses to obtain the desired genomes and collect embryos for immunostaining. I examine the expression of a conceptual gene, cg31235, which is solely expressed in longitudinal glial cells, in the presence of the genes Pointed P1 (PntP1) and Reversed Polarity (Repo). Subsequently, I will then use immunostaining to examine the expression of PntP1 and Repo in order to determine whether they regulate the genes involved in the in the development and function of longitudinal glia. Last fall, I presented my research proposal, which was followed by a presentation at the Society of Developmental Biology this spring. These experiences have strengthened my desire to explore

Specific personal intellectual interests within their academic majors. I chose to major in nuclear engineering here at the Naval Academy. I'm really excited to pursue a career in the field of nuclear engineering and hopefully make advances in the multifaceted field of nuclear engineering and power. Specifically, if given the opportunity, I would like to pursue questions concerning radiation shielding possibly for space applications or materials that could be used to better safeguard against nuclear fallout after an explosion for application in the construction of military vehicles to protect the occupants of the vehicle. I am confident that I will be able to narrow my research to a clearly defined research topic that has real–world application use as I continue studying nuclear engineering. Exceptional perseverance, tenacity or "grit" in pursuit of excellence.

Broad interests and natural curiosity. While my major at the Academy is nuclear engineering, I would like to broaden my education in such a way that would allow me to focus on more than nuclear engineering and research. I desire to be able to have the opportunity to induce change in nuclear policy. Nuclear policy goes beyond military capabilities and research funding. I believe that it is crucial for better implementation of systems of safety for the civilian sector producing nuclear power in order to

My academic interests throughout the years have really changed and evolved as I have matured as a student. Since I started school, I've always had an appreciation for academics and the various subjects that I learned. I would attribute this to the fact that I was able to work with and learn from students, teachers or friends that were passionate about a particular subject, helping me understand a subject's value even if it did not particularly interest me. By having this exposure during my formative years where I learned to think independently, I came to cherish my own education in addition to realizing the importance and value education can hold for others. As I grew older and began to think for myself, I developed an affinity towards math and science. I would attribute this to the fact that my mind is more analytical than creative, leading me to find interest in areas of study that progress logically and introduce concepts that can be built on top of each other. Once I got to high school, the science classes that I took started to utilize concepts from mathematics and vice versa. I was particularly interested when concepts and ideas stemming from a variety of fields were put together in order to accomplish something practical. I began to seek out articles and videos online to further develop my knowledge of technology and scientific phenomena. At the end of my junior year, I was motivated to seek out and apply for various research opportunities that involved working

This project, named 'Federated Identity for web services' (FEDi) was aimed to facilitate federation identity in Apache Axis2/C, an open source web service framework. With our project we could propose a well established solution to achieve claim based identity among distributed web services. We developed and strengthened several well known web service specifications WS–Security, WS–Trust and Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) to obtain our project goals and composed a paper on 'Claim Based Identity for Authentication and Authorization in Web Services'. This project is available under Apache Axis2/C and the paper was submitted and presented at the International Information Technology Conference (IITC), Sri Lanka in 2008. Working in this project helped to me gain a good experience in research and majorly ignited the enthusiasm on me to pursue further studies on distributed systems. After graduating, I started studying the area of parallel computing particularly on Message Passing Interface (MPI) standards and its usability. I have written programs to understand the key concepts and functionalities and recently I did my own experimental work on parallelizing well known algorithms. Notably on parallelizing quicksort algorithm and conducting a performance analysis. The influence behind this was to parallelize quicksort without initial fixed data partitioning and share data sets created through regular partitioning. With this I was intended to

Naying Ren Statement of Purpose

My academic interest in gender and kinship studies was triggered by my encounter with one of the greatest minds in our history. I was fascinated by Simone de Beauvoir in her The Second Sex, both by her insightful existential analysis of women's situation and the interdisciplinary approach which she takes. She approaches gender from manifold perspectives including the biological, the psychoanalytic, the historical, the literary and the anthropological, leading to a powerful revelation of how women are socially constructed and how the myth of the "Eternal Feminine" is perpetuated. Progressively, my curiosity and admiration grew into academic enthusiasm. I find myself particularly interested in the topic of gender. In an attempt to learn more about gender, a dimension of human life that is rarely taught in Chinese universities, I directed numerous course essays towards gender, which enabled me to combine my study in English literature with my self–study in gender theories. After studying gender independently through reading some of the feminist classics and queer theories, I probed into the cultural representations, particularly those in the form of literature and film, which delineate gender in certain implicative images out of certain intention. Besides one of my written work submitted in this application about the stigmatization of the queer as the new "femme fatale" in David Lynch's neo–noir Blue Velvet (1986), I've also written about how

I exemplify excellence academically by keeping up with my schoolwork and always working my hardest on all the work I have. When I get assigned school work I always make sure to put it in my planner, both on the day it was assigned and on the day its due. In my personal life I display excellence by being kind to those around me and helping others whenever I can. I love volunteering even though I don't have as much time as I would like to do it, and to me volunteering is a great way to help others and displaying excellence – even when no one is watching. In my opinion academic and personal excellence is displayed when someone does something without expecting to receive praise. So if someone were to volunteer it would be because they like doing it and not because they need to get into a good college, even though volunteering is a great thing to have on a college application. The characteristics I described above to demonstrate my academic and personal excellence make me a good candidate for induction into National Honor Society because I keep track of when I need to do something or be somewhere and I am always willing to participate in volunteering opportunities.

my interest in psychology

I have always been intrigued by the mental processes of humans and animals. As a young child and into adolescence, as a student and teacher and as a caregiver, I have always been interested in psychology in one form or another. This essay will reflect not only the development of my interest in psychology, but the development of myself as a person.

I was born into a family with Native Americanheritage that practiced a strict protestant religion. As a child, I would often wonder why people's attitudes, behaviors and beliefs could be so different from one another. I wondered why some people believed in things with great zeal, yetother people believed the contrary just as vehemently....show more content...

I then went back to school with more determination and plunged myself into more psychology classes.

In these classes, I found myself naturally drawn to the topics of research methods and statistics. These two academic areas in particular provided an environment in which I was able to develop and excercise my naturally analytical way of thinking. I then geared my undergraduate education towards learning to perform research in psychology by taking more research and science based psychology classes. Additionally, I sought out and obtained research assistantships with professors of cognition, physiological and clinical psychology. Specifically, I have been a primary research assistant for an investigation of the effect of irony on recall and recognition, an investigation of the performance of children with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on a computer anticipation task, and an investigation of the effect of Polychlorinated Biphenyls on ADHD–like behavior in laboratory rats. I have also assisted in literature reviews in the area of receptive language and Autism, as well as a

Introduction Societies and organizations are evolving on the ability by individuals to develop career oriented goals. Lifelong planning is what drives to learning institutions to develop skills for our current and future needs. In the business environment, people are looking for motivated entrepreneurs to transform the outlook of their societies through investment. Planning enhances personal development, helps us to determine our strength, and enhances competitiveness and employability. One of the most difficult things in life is adapting to change. The new skills and ways of critical thinking is quite a cumbersome paradigm shift, yet once you adapt to new changes which are aimed at transforming your business thinking and ideology,...show more content...

The research will also focus on the development needs analysis of my plan and will conclude with appendices.

Personal Development Plan Self evaluation is part of strategic learning through which we reflect on personal abilities or potentials to prosper in life. My development plans are geared at seeing me through my academic struggles in the career part of advanced practices. We are presented with academic resources and opportunities which I should use for my benefit. I need to develop a good culture of reading extensively, critically thinking about what am reading and how such material is relevant to my career path. Another plan is developing a good art of academic research and writing, formulating learning styles that are appropriate to my learning. I should also develop the art of managing my learning environment and understanding how to write academic papers. I should also be in the course of my study to develop the employability skill and prepare myself for internship. Once I accurately develop these skills in the course of my study I would be on the road to career success in advanced business practices.

Development Needs Analysis According to Asselin(2010, p.5), developing a good culture of reading is part and parcel of any academic excellence in life. Throughout our studies we are presented with resource materials that are relevant to our disciplines. This means that the materials

Research interests reflect his/her identity as a scientist. Research interests of every scientist are always put in the first page of his/her resume because the scientist want to emphasize that he/she is an expert of this specific field and is able to contribute to this field rather than other fields. Why one scientist devote huge of energy and time in this field, what work one should do, where one belong to, and who he/ she establish relationship with are all influenced, determined and shaped by research interests. Research interests extremely important for anyone who want to dedicate to academia career, but how does one have a clear goal of his/her research interests? One child may aspire to be a psychologist when he grow up because he wish to discover the process of people thinking. When he study in a college where more resources are available and accessible for him, he may realize that he is interested in the impact of metal process on education. Therefore, he applies for graduate study for in–depth study due to the fact that he is so ambitious that he "tries to revolutionize the field with a groundbreaking manuscript" (Nihalan & Mayrath, 2008). He may encounter a serious and confused issue that he do not know how to get started, since his initial research interests are too general and broad to be explored. After completion of my Master's, I can pursue the career of my dreams, a Hospice Social Worker.

REFLECTIONS OF TOPICS IN CLASS

I have learned so much in this class to prepare me for a successful college experience. There were some topics that caught my attention more than others. Such as, time and stress management, University resources, and critical thinking.

Time and Stress Management

How I manage time is a reflection of what I value. Managing my time corresponds to how successful I will be in college and throughout life. Knowing and setting priorities to meet goals, carrying out plans, taking control of time, and staying focused are some events that are involved with time management. For many of us, balancing school with work and family is the greatest challenge involved with prioritizing. Good advance planning will help in meeting these challenges. Staying focused is usually difficult, especially for first–year students. Staying focused entails remembering and dedicating to the most important purpose for being in college. Sacrificing unnecessary commitments and keeping my

My guidance counselor was a very kind man who was willing to help anyone in need. By speaking to my guidance counselor I was able to learn about different strategies to minimize stress and manage my time. He helped me create a schedule that would allow me to understand what I needed to do everyday. Having this scheduled allowed me to reduce stress and manage my time. My counselor would also check on me every month to see if I was doing well and keeping up with my school work. If I hadn't spoken to my counselor I would have fallen behind in school and in my daily activities. Overall my counselor assisted me with many of the challenges I faced in school. My transition from school to college was pretty easy. I already live in Orlando so I am familiar with the area and the college. The biggest difference between my school and this college is the size. Getting around the college during my first day was not easy. After wandering around the college and understanding where everything is I am now able to navigate myself to the classes. My experience so far at college has been great. I am currently majoring in biomedical sciences and hope to one day become a doctor. I am still adjusting to the amount of work and the class sizes at this college but I will get used to it. I look forward to doing well in college and landing a six figure income job. Google Scholarship Essays Abiodun Lawal Hakeem [1]. What sparked your interest in computer science? How did this lead you to major in computer science and what do you hope to accomplish with your degree? In your answer, please describe how your experiences have influenced the goals you have for yourself. Every human has a purpose and every purpose has an ordained path and beginning. My interest in computer science came to light as soon as I began to walk, talk and think independently. I always had the innate passion and desire to scrutinize electronic devices even though I was still a child with little understanding. Being a little kid, my access to computers was constrained, but nonetheless, I made the best out of every opportunity I had with them. Time flew by quickly and I suddenly began to grow in wisdom, and also began to understand what life is all about. Immediately I graduated from high school, I applied for a 3–month full–time computer training before making any preparations for college. Unbeknownst to me, I was actually on a direct path to discovering my true potential in computer science and engineering. Financially and physically, it was a burden commuting from my home down to the computer training center, but the intrinsic passion and desire to get my hands on electronic devices and to learn more about how computers really work made me overlook the struggle. My Academic and Career Goals

My academic goal is to graduate Argosy University with a bachelors degree in Forensic Psychology in three years time. Forensic Psychology is the study of the criminal mind, in a nutshell. The main motivation to achieve this goal would be intrinsic. I love asking questions and knowing the answers as to why people do what they do, and in a criminals case, what led them to committing the crime. This goal, however, may have some extrinsic motivation as well. Being knowledgeable about certain behaviors that criminals poses may help solve or even prevent a crime. In addition, having a degree will help open different paths in life, ones that may present me with greater job opportunities. My attitude toward the learning process will help my achievement of each goal because I am eager, determined and motivated. My greatest desire is to succeed in life, and obtaining an education is one thing I know will help me. I perhaps will need to make some adjustments along my journey. I do not know yet if I will find another educational path that intrigues me the most. For now, I do not feel that any adjustments need to be made. My career goal is to work in the Los Angeles Police Department as part of their Forensics team. I want to do more than simply dig into the minds of criminals. I want to be active; take fingerprints, DNA samples, and experience the crime scene. Most of this is taught through direct training from the department but I feel that having a degree in Forensic Psychology

Academic background and career interest

Ever since my later adolescence years, I have always been intrigued by the diverse complexity of the human brain. Numerous days I have sat down obtrusively observing my surroundings just to satisfy my curiosity on how individuals think, reason and problem solve everyday life happenings. As such, when it was time to attend university, I decided to studypsychology as a means of gaining knowledge and understanding about individuals' cognitive processes and their behavior. During my undergraduate studies, for a particular reason, I was struck by Abnormal Psychology and spent hours thinking about the various disorders captured by the then Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM IV). I spent an awful lot of time trying to understand the differing disorders and how their impact on the behavior and thinking processes of individuals that are diagnosed with them.

I recently completed a Master's degree in Counseling psychology through a mentored low residency program at the American International College in Springfield, MA. As such, I was able to improve my academic skills and obtained practical experience from my clinical internship. My inherent enthusiasm to help others and be a positive difference maker in their lives predisposes me to seek doctoral pursuit as I aim is to develop a more robust understanding of the nuances and complexities surrounding behavior and cognition of human beings.
