During my searches for colleges to attend following my senior year of high school, WLC had come as a high recommendation from my older sister, Lauren, a current undergrad student at WLC. At the time, I was looking to go into Digital Media as my major, though things have now changed. At the time of my initial visit and admissions process I was quite impressed with theschool and found it to be in my top 3. I've been in the Lutheran church my whole life (WELS while in New York and LCMS after moving to Wisconsin) as well as attending private Lutheran school from grade school through high school, so it seemed like a natural continuation. I loved the campus, small class size, and the general vibe I got from the visit. However, at the time wanting to go into Media, I felt less enthusiastic about the...show more content... This led me to attend Olivet Nazarene University this past year, as per influence from my high school youth leaders. Not majoring in anything related to religious studies, I didn't find myself too bothered in my disagreements in the belief system taught there. The first fall semester went mostly well, but it was this current spring semester when my life decided to take a turn. Opening up about my personal life, I have struggled with issues of anxiety and depression, which on occasion have affected my academic performance in the past, as I would fail to actively seek out counseling opportunities. Two and a half months in, I saw myself reach an all–time low in my studies. I was failing to apply effective studying techniques, and attend class on a regular basis. By my failing to actively seek to solve personal issues, they had severely affected my academic performance. I often feel hesitant bringing these problems up, as I fear it can come off as insincere or an excuse. This forced me to seek new counseling services at the school, and re–evaluate God's plan for my life. I began to doubt my decision to major in multimedia studies, and whether there was some

There I was, feeling as if the entire world was crashing on top of me. I will be the first to say that I haven't had and worry free and easy life but I will also tell you that nothing will ever compare to that night. The sheriffs were talking but I didn't listen. I was lost deep in my thoughts and i feared they would always consume me. As I continued to panic, I realized my little sister needed me so I hid it all and played the calm big sister I have always been. I found that this poetry could lead to so much more. I began to think of how I could expand these poems. I began to listen more and also began to give advice for people who needed a listening ear and a bit of hope. As I continued to listen, I began to realize that many people have lived through the struggle I have. Soon, I fell in love with another amazing and powerful tool. This amazing tool is writing short stories along with my poetry. I was learning how to turn my voiceless drawings into a strong and outspoken being that i call my real words. At this point, I was doing well at crafts such as crocheting. I have always needed to work with my hands as I had grown up on a farm until I was 12.once we had left the farm, I needed a new way to occupy my hands so I began my drawing. I instantly fell in love with it and i wouldn't have known what to do without it. My drawing and writing have became my life and that is why i will continue to draw for the rest of my life or until my hands refuse to work. When I first started college, the first thing I saw as I walked with my parents and all of my luggage to my new room was an empty lounge. It looked like the kind of place that was supposed to resemble the living room of a house, but it felt bare and unused. Because of the large wooden wall, the area felt cut off and separate, so for the first few weeks of college, I spent more time in my room, alone, rather than out in the lounge where a few people congregated to talk. As the semester pushed forward, I pushed myself to venture out into the lounge more in order to make friends on my floor. The closed off feeling of the lounge eventually came to feel like an asset. It made the area feel like it was closed off enough to have a conversation and

As a semi–privileged white teenager, a member of my school's student government, my school's representative in my county's Youth Leadership Program (YLP), and the winner of two Presidential Volunteer Service Awards (PVSA), I may appear to have lived a charmed life. But, my life started with serious problems which I never could have overcome without my own diligence and my loved ones' unconditional support. As a baby, my speech and social skills developed unusually slowly. At fifteen months old, the state of Massachusetts flagged me as having "pervasive developmental delays, not otherwise specified" and recommended me for an early intervention program. My parents, worried I might never live a normal life, agreed to put me in it. When I was three,...show more content...
Hence, from third grade on, I was considered "twice–exceptional" and went to a completely different elementary school for advanced academics, still on an IEP.
Switching to a new school was not entirely positive, however. I had to leave most of my friends behind, and the competitive environment made me a clear target for bullies and induced chronic anxiety. I also gained weight, which elicited more harassment. This abysmal cycle climaxed towards the end of third grade in a public cacophony of emotion, after which my homeroom teacher recommended me a reputable therapist she knew. I will refer to him with the pseudonym, "Dr. J."
My sessions with Dr. J thoroughly remedied my sorrow. Not only did he give great advice, we played board games to build my interpersonal skills. A parent often joined us as we talked, letting me vent to him/her as well. The results were tangible: I became calmer, my weight problems eased, and my social skills improved. With support from mymother, father, Dr. J, and teachers, I made it through advanced academics in elementary school with good grades, improving significantly in every area of my

I have encountered many of my peers taking drugs, listened to songs about drugs and even seen drugs romanticized on social media. Like most teenagers, I lived in a world surrounded by drugs, but I had never had an experience with them. I came from a "picture–perfect" family and prior to my freshman year of high school, I was somewhat narcissistic, believing that I was too good to even be associated with drugs. It was August 2012, the summer before my freshman year of high school, and my life seemed as sound as ever. I was excited to begin the next step in my life and looked forward to starting school. As the weeks passed and I was returning to my normal academic routine, my parents began acting strangely uneasy. I knew there was something wrong. I used to fear the discovery of my brother's problem would distort others' perceptions of me, now; I am no longer restrained by what is regarded of me. Today, I am thankful for the circumstances I went through and proud of the person it shaped me to be. Through my brother's disease, I discovered a sense of independence in myself. Personal Narrative: My College Career
When I began college, I had no direction. I started my college career enrolling as "undecided," taking liberal arts courses to fulfill base requirements while considering a number of majors. Writing has always been a strength, science an interest, and other subject success varied with my personal interest in the content. I truly believe that my limitations in those early days were functions of my own interest and self–discipline, and my A or F transcript is good evidence of this.
I declared a chemistry major, and quickly realized that I did not see myself spending my days in an office calculating the amount of material in vat A to mix with material in vat B, that I needed something more dynamic that could not be guaranteed with that degree. (I will note that perhaps the right guidance could have sparked my imagination to stick with the hard sciences, but I did not seek out a mentor or make myself available for such advice). I was successful in all of my computer classes, having started programming with BASIC in middle school, but generally floundered, having no clear goal in mind, no outcome that seemed exciting to me. I saved enough to buy a new PC and began teaching myself all there was to learn. Image nine resonates with me because it represents women "taking a seat at the table" in business and I believe more women need to be at the table. The photograph showing a woman in the back row reminds me of a theme from Sheryl Sandberg's book, Lean In, where she urges women to take a seat at the table versus sitting on the side of the room. After graduating from Smith College, where I was empowered by intellectually curious and ambitious women, and then transitioning to banking, a male–dominated industry, I recognized early in my career how few women there were in executive roles. As a career driven woman I became inspired to change the status quo and promote the career advancement of women. In my professional career, I have taken several...show more content...

After gaining approval and funding from human resources, our founding committee secured Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to speak at the launch event. The launch for our group was so popular that we had to a find a new venue to accommodate the 100+ employees who wanted to attend. Next, we obtained the bank's chief technology officer as our executive sponsor, the only female executive. I met my brother and sister from across a classroom desk in the basement of Saint Anthony's Medical Center. I was walking into my first Alateen meeting with my biological sister, Alex, with a blank stare and a mind overflowing with thoughts of why and how I had gotten there. Alex and I sat down next to a boy, who was about sixteen years old with tan skin and brown hair, and a girl, who was about twelve years old and looked just like him. Fast forward three years and I found myself moving the boxes of these two into a new house. Corrected PS Growing up in a small townhouse, I would see my father only once a week on Sundays because he was working long hours the rest of the week. When meeting him, I would become very emotional because I knew that the reason I could not see him other days of the week was because he was working. My father's hard work and perseverance gave me the drive to become someone that he would be proud of. My goal is to become someone that he can say to himself it was worth the long and strenuous hours spent at work. When I started my undergraduate career, I did not have the intentions of entering this field of study. I wanted to run the family business and make it successful. My father said, "If you want to enter the business and are willing to do it every day, then work the entire summer." I was eager to start, arriving on time and being the last one to leave. The enthusiasm soon abated, I could see that I no longer desired to run the family business and did not enjoy my time working there. The pistons in my mind were pumping so quickly that I was unconscious of its exact calculation process. To this day, I still do not know how I won that match. Chess was never an old man's leisure game, to me it was war.
