A letter from President and CEO Michelle Markowitz

Good evening, everyone!
Having been with Cardinal Cushing Centers for over 25 years, I have had the privilege of watching our organization grow, evolve, and thrive. But one thing has stayed constant in all of these years –which is that our staff are the absolute best of the best. Through good times and tough times, our staff consistently come through for the student and adult participants at this organization – everysingle-time.
That’s because you all care about your role here and what we are accomplishing together as a whole. Thank you for never losing sight of our mission – to provide people of all ages, all abilities, and all faiths the most robust set of academic, vocational, and life-skills training and tools to enable the most joyous, independent lives possible. By doing this, by taking part in this mission, we are making a difference in the lives of countless participants, family members and the community at large.
Tonight we celebrate 66 people reaching milestone years. Sixty-six people who are working together to help this incredible group of exceptional people. I am so proud of each and every one of you, and say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
With so much gratitude,

Celebrating Years of Service 5

Fatima Barros, Residential Life Skills Instructor

When people in the residential department hear Fatima’s name, they think of her as genuinely caring person with a “teacher’s” mentality. Fatima strives to have her students learn skills for themselves, so that they can feel proud - and that one day they can go out into the world and do for themselves versus having things done for them. Always compassionate and caring towards her coworkers and students, Fatima is usually the first one to stay late or come in early - pitching in so that her coworkers and students have what they need to be the most successful version of themselves. Fatima is one of those staff that makes people around her better, simply by being the caring, compassionate professional that she has been for many years - through thick and thin. Thank you! Over the last 25 years, Stacey has held many roles in the organization - from a Food Service Assistant, to a supervisor in the Food Services department, to a Teacher’s Aid in the Vocational Department, and now the Assistant Manager/ Baker in the Cushing Cafe. It would be really hard to run the Café without Stacey’s energy and dedication - each and every day. When Stacey is not working, she loves spending time with her 3 cats (all named after her favorite holiday – Halloween) and her chicken. Thank you, Stacey, for all of your years here at Cushing! She has gone from teacher’s assistant to her current role of Recycling Instructor; with many different jobs in between. Melinda is always putting Cardinal Cushing and the students we serve as her first priority. She is always the first to lend a helping hand to help cover in a classroom or help with a transition to the residential units. She will always encourage students to try their hardest to complete a task as independently as possible. We are extremely lucky to have Melinda as part of our team, and we thank you for 25 years of service! Author: Vinny DeSilva

Tom
Jennings, Director
of
Facilities

Tom Jennings joined Cardinal Cushing Centers as a plumber in 1994. After five years in this role and with the endorsement of Sister Magdalena, he took over the reigns as Supervisor of the Facilities Department. During his tenure, Tom has been involved in all aspects of facilities and maintenance - and has witnessed many changes over the past thirty years. The one constant that has kept Tom here is his devotion to the Sisters of St Francis of Assisi and our mission – which he embodies when he takes on projects. He has high expectations of his team, but is fair and will share the load alongside them.
Those that see Tom around campus may see a quiet man with a stern face, but underneath that tough exterior he is a big softy. He cares deeply, wants the best environment for the individuals we support and our staff, loves to birdwatch and spend time camping with his family, and loves his beloved cat. Tom’s commitment to our values has been instrumental in transforming our buildings & grounds into places where individuals can become the best versions of themselves, and truly feel at home. Tom, Congratulations on your 30 years at Cardinal Cushing Centers! Author: Gina Rosas
Sheila Marchand, Retired Residential Supports Manager

Sheila started working at Cardinal Cushing Centers in 1994, 30 years ago! I don’t think anyone was surprised when Sheila began picking up shifts at many of the houses that needed her, despite her “retirement.” She will still cover shifts for me when I call her and the guys are always excited to have her back, even just for a little bit. I am so thankful to Sheila for all she has taught me – she is a very caring, compassionate, feisty woman and she would do anything for our clients, or anyone that needs her. I am honored to have had the privilege of getting to work side by side with Sheila, and blessed to still call her a dear friend. Author: Eileen Keefe

Paula Cannavo, Central Supply Instructor

Paula has been an integral part of the Cardinal Cushing team for 35 years now – which is hard to imagine! Even after all of these years, Paula is always willing to work with each student to make sure they get the best possible vocational training they can. She is attentive to detail and makes sure Central Supply is always running smoothly. Paula’s willingness to go above and beyond to make sure each classroom has their desired products does not go unseen and is so appreciated. There is usually no order she cannot get! We have been fortunate to have Paula as the foundation of Central Supply for so long and we say THANK YOU for all that you do. Author: Vinny DeSilva
Joyce Fanning, Relief Position, Cushing Café

Joyce started her career over 35 years ago as a childcare worker in the Residential Department, and then moved to the Vocational Department where she was an instructor in the Culinary Arts program. Over her time as a culinary instructor, she taught many students the job skills that they would need for their future jobs –and it brought her a lot of joy. She was also the first to have fun by dressing up for an upcoming sporting or seasonal event. After 34 years of dedication, she decided it was time to retire, but she couldn’t quite leave us, so she is now at the Cushing Café for an occasional shift, putting her culinary art skills to work. Thank you, Joyce! Author: Maren Geloran
Maura McArdle, Residential Life Skills Instructor

For over 3 decades, Maura has been a model of professionalism, grace, hard work and determination. No matter the circumstances, she is always amazingly supportive of the organization, its mission, its students, parents and staff – and to this day she will sometimes call Cushing and say, “I heard you need help and I’m available to come in!” That could literally be in the middle of a blizzard, but it wouldn’t matter to Maura as long as she was helping. There simply are not enough positive adjectives, accolades or remarks to bestow upon Maura that capture the kind of person she is, and the impact she has made on our students here at Cardinal Cushing. Thank you! Author: David Ryder

Sean Finerty, Accounting Manager

In Sean’s years of service, he has worn many hats – first as overnight cleaner in the Braintree offices, and then working in the back office to strengthen the accounting department, process payroll and help wherever and whenever needed. He is a main point of contact for those random questions that come up, as he knows so much about Cardinal Cushing Centers. I often hear people start conversations with him, saying “I know this isn’t your job, but, do you know...” and he usually knows exactly where to send the person. He always goes the extra mile for those he cares about, whether that’s driving coworkers to appointments or shoveling their cars out. He is one person I know would be there for me, if I ever need anything. It has been a pleasure getting to know him over the years and I look forward to many more. Author:

Julia Driscoll and Maureen Smith, North River Arts
It has been about a year since I first walked in to North River Arts Gallery in Marshfield Hills. I was greeted with kindness, and an understanding of the great work we do at Cushing. Their enthusiasm to opening North River Arts for Cushing artists to shine really touched my heart. The Joyful Expressions Art Show was a huge success because of Julia and Maureen’s visions. The Art Show will now be an annual event! Thank you and welcome to the Cushing Community and family!
Nominator: Randy Wiskow
Melanie Farr, Old Navy
I work with Melanie at Old Navy. She is one of the Team Leaders. I would like to thank Melanie for being my mentor. She is a wonderful leader. She helps me solve problems, with kindness and always with a smile. She knows how to set up tasks so they are easier to understand. She always makes everyone on the team feel recognized, especially on their birthday!
Nominator: Amy Slater
Rose Hickey, Laughter Yoga
Rose has been a wonderful and constant presence for the people of Cushing’s Adult Programs these last 6-plus years. Our individuals love going to Laughter Yoga with Rose leading us, and scientists will tell you that laughter releases endorphins, which reduces stress and improves mood! Being with Rose at Laughter Yoga each Thursday does the same thing – and even during Covid Rose traveled to lead us, outdoors. In our 6 years of Laughter Yoga, Rose has even named several yoga moves after our individuals – which is just one of Rose’s many kindnesses. At the close of each yoga session, all of the participants bow to one another and say “Namaste, Namaste” and “No mistakes, No mistakes,” – which is so endearing. Thank you, Rose!

Steve Green, ItzaParty Pembroke
The Development Dept. would like to nominate ItzaParty Pembroke for being so generous and kind to Cushing over the years.
Because of owner Steve and his crew, Granite Links looks so festive every year for our St. Patrick’s dinner and auction. Not only do they donate the balloons, and have for more than 10 years, but Steve personally goes there to set up - and it’s always fabulous! Plus, they bring a basket to be placed in the silent auction – going above and beyond. In addition, and even though Halloween is their busiest time of year, ItzaParty Pembroke is also donating all of the fun and colorful balloons and balloon columns for the Cushing Fun Run – which really sets the stage for the event. We thank you for all that you do to help us provide the most fun, most colorful fundraising events.
Nominator: Pam Eddy
Traci Njarian, Kennedy’s Country Gardens
Traci and her staff at Kennedy’s Country Gardens have been welcoming Cushing Greenhouse students and staff to her Scituate store, while sharing thoughts, gardening tips, and ideas that enhance our students lives. Staci is thoughtful and kind, which is evident whenever she is interacting with our students – giving them her full attention and treating them with the utmost respect. She has also donated countless plants and planters to Cushing Greenhouse for students to learn, propagate and sell in our Garden Shop. Traci included us in their store’s Fall Arts and Crafts Fair, allowing us to promote community awareness and sell studentcreated art, crafts and ceramics, and she also hosted a Cushing Art Show in one of her retail Greenhouses! Traci has also offered to extend her high-volume, wholesale discount to us, for some of our seasonal purchasing needs. She lives the Cushing Mission - understanding how our students benefit from community involvement and having local business

Wayne DeSilva, Plymouth County Farms
When I accepted the Greenhouse Instructor position at Cushing, one thing I didn’t expect was an aphid problem. I connected with Mr. DeSilva at Plymouth County Farms, and he invited a small group of us to tour the greenhouses he oversees, explain the watering and fertilizing systems in place, and understand how they manage insects. He later came to Cushing to help us with the aphids – offering both guidance and materials to support our success.
Since then, his support of our programs and students has continued in many ways – including having our students at the farm to see their aquaponic systems, animals and plants. Our student were allowed to enjoy the Farm in their own way – singing, touching plants, and even putting their hands in the fish tank. He continues to stop by and cheer us on, donate materials, and offer ways to help – and for this support, we are extremely grateful. The community around us is imperative for our success, and Wayne’s support has made such a big difference to myself, our students, and our programs. Thank you!
