2020-2021 Athletics Highlights

Going Yard in a Suit and Tie

On a crisp fall day, Head of School Dr. Randy Bertin (a former high school and college player) impressed Cushing students with a display of power during an impromptu batting practice session.

A Ring Ceremony was held for the Varsity Girls Ice Hockey 2020 NEPSAC champions

The story of 2020-21 Cushing Athletics is one of adaptability and a measured return to normalcy. Over the course of the year, Cushing was gradually able to add in regular outside competition—where fall teams were limited to intrasquad scrimmages, winter and spring sports were able to open up and actively compete in shortened seasons.

Through it all, the Athletic Department focused on maintaining athletic routines— incorporating evolving regulations into daily team practice, holding “Purple vs. White” intrasquad scrimmage experiences in lieu of interscholastic competition, and fi nding ways to make the best of challenging circumstances. Varsity Volleyball, for instance, played their fi rst-ever outdoor match!

A key focus for the year was on designing creative outlets for team building. In the fall, a hotly contested and well-attended Faculty/Staff vs. Varsity Softball game kicked off the fi rst of many competitive campus gatherings, including a number of intrasquad matches—Varsity Baseball vs. Varsity Boys’ Basketball produced some particularly compelling action. While many winter sports were able to play a handful of games, by spring many Cushing teams were able to compete in halfseasons with outside competition (limited to weekends). Here are some spring highlights:

Varsity Softball went 10-0! Big wins against Andover, Winchendon, Wilbraham, Williston, Deerfi eld, and Worcester Academy.

Varsity Baseball featured three Honorable Mention All New England players: Dan Sheeran ’21, Justin Masteralexis ’22, and Jarrad Coyne ’21.

Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse had two All NEPSAC players, Shea Verrier ’21 and Kloe Martin ’21, and one honorable mention: Julia Cole ’21.

We’re incredibly proud of all of our studentathletes this season—and were particularly pleased that each of our teams was able to celebrate Senior Day in person and surrounded by teammates and families. ROLL PENS! To honor seniors, on behalf of the Athletics Department, each studentathlete is given a banner with their name and graduating year as well as a commemorative photo in uniform.

The Emergence of Streaming Video

For 2021-22, Cushing is investing in the HUDL platform to help automate athletic livestream broadcasts. The new technology will not only provide more consistent livestream coverage, but also give coaches and players a new tool with which to review and analyze practice, game fi lm, and video analytics.
