What a difference a year makes!

In April 2020—during the early days of the pandemic—Tony Fisher Day, Cushing’s annual celebration of volunteerism, looked radically diff erent. The student community was entirely remote and engaged in service projects independently in their hometowns or virtually.

This year’s Tony Fisher Day more closely resembled past years'. Students could be found working hard to clean up the campus and surrounding locations. Despite unusually blustery weather, including some spring snow fl urries, students banded together to give their time and energy in support of one of Cushing’s most revered traditions.

Since 2005, Tony Fisher Day of Service to Others, named in honor of late alumnus, trustee, and well-known philanthropist M. Anthony Fisher ’69, is a time for Cushing to send students out into surrounding communities and across Massachusetts — and sometimes beyond — to make a diff erence. While this year’s opportunities, including cleaning up campus locations, a local Little League fi eld and playground, and many other projects, were closer to home, Penguins put heart, soul, and often a little elbow grease into their assigned duties.

Recognizing that many Cushing students were still off campus due to pandemic restrictions, an innovative virtual service program allowed students on campus to be joined by their remote counterparts all over the world as they tackled the challenges of climate change through a collaboration with MIT’s Spark Learning series.

On campus or across the globe, Tony Fisher Day 2021 continued to be an opportunity for Cushing students to learn the importance of giving back!
