SING OUT, LOUISE! PRODUCTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH CURVE PRESENT

A Note from Co-Conceiver, Composer and Lyricist SCOTT EVAN DAVIS

Back in 2012, I was hired as a composer and teaching artist to help a group of autistic teens in New York City create an original musical. The show, POWERFUL DAY, followed kids who were bullied until a storm gave them all superhero powers. Among the group was a non-speaking girl named Emma who sat quietly through every rehearsal. I wasn’t sure how much she was enjoying it – until her mother approached me and thanked me, telling me Emma blogged about the experience every day. I went home and read her writing, and I was blown away. Her words were poetic, perceptive, and profound. That night changed me. I realized how much of someone’s inner world we often overlook – and how important it is to give voice to those who aren’t always heard. INDIGO was born from that moment: a story meant to honour Emma, and to shine a light on the incredible inner lives of the non-speaking community.

A Note from Director CATIE DAVIS

I’m most excited as a director by stories that embrace the theatricality of live design and storytelling to explore deeply human themes. INDIGO does something no musical has ever done before – it invites audiences to step into the visceral experience of a young nonspeaking artist with synesthesia. We experience parts of this show through Emma’s mind, where colour and texture emanate from sound and from human connection. While her journey is often challenging, Emma holds on to hope that she will find what she is looking for, and uses her art to guide her on this journey. We knew early on how important it would be to authentically cast the role of Emma and thank Olivia Landon and Jill Green, our amazing casting directors, for their support in connecting us with the wonderful neurodiverse talent pool in the UK.

We originally set out on our journey with INDIGO in the United States, working with the Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, Ohio for a developmental production and have been sharing material with test audiences around the country. We quickly learned how openly folks embraced the story; how many people’s lives are impacted by autism, dementia, or the nuance of modern family systems. INDIGO offered them an opportunity to feel seen in the complexities of trying to make the best of challenging circumstances. We suspected these reactions were not just American, but true to a global experience. Following a London workshop last November, we teamed up with Curve to present the UK premiere of INDIGO and couldn’t be more grateful to have been welcomed by this wonderful theatre and its audiences.

INDIGO is a story about hope, rebuilding, and connection. How beautiful that Emma, as the only non-speaking person in the show, teaches everyone around her to listen and connect. I hope that INDIGO inspires you to keep fighting for what matters in your family, to forgive and soften when you consider another perspective, and to celebrate the power of art to unite across generations.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND EMMA'S ART

Authentic representation of neurodivergence in INDIGO has been of paramount importance for our creative team. In keeping with this priority, some of the artwork included in the projection design of INDIGO was painted by Viktor Bevanda, an amazing 16 year old artist who who can’t speak. Diagnosed with autism at an early age, Viktor didn't let his limitations in comprehension and verbal abilities limit his artistic talent.

Viktor began to show signs of autism at the age of 2.

After a change in behaviour, testing led to a diagnosis of autism. By the age of 5 his parents began to take notice of his talent in art and within a few years, his technique developed. Even though he was self-taught, he started to express himself through his art. He proves autism is no barrier to creativity. He has the ability to focus on detail and he can understand how colours interact with each other.

He was raised in Serbia and his parents made a big step in their lives and moved to the USA at the end of 2018. He and his family now live in Florida. You can learn more about Viktor and his amazing story, as well as purchase his art at VichysArt.com.
