Dear Curtis Community, ¡Hola! ¡Buenos días, clase! ¡Buenos días, Profe! ¿Cómo estás? ¡Bien! ¿Cómo te llamas? Me llamo Jackson. So began class on a typical day in room “Gamma” in the Tuttle building. The 2017-2018 school year was filled with the sounds of Spanish being taught in the Kindergarten and 6th grade classrooms as the first year of Curtis’s new World Languages Program initiative unfolded. Through song, dialogue and activities, students were exposed to the sounds, grammar and text of the Spanish language and the cultures of Spanishspeaking peoples. Another new sound on our campus was the bell ringing in the Tuttle building, marking the periods of the day and alerting 6th grade students to move to their next class—audible evidence of another initiative that was rolled out last year. The Class of 2018 was the first to experience a departmentalized 6th grade program— one that is modeled on a middle school structure. Students learned to follow a more complex weekly schedule that had them moving between classrooms for different subjects and adapting to the expectations of several different teachers. Coding was added as a compulsory element of the academic program, and elective blocks gave students the opportunity to explore a number of different interest areas outside of the core subjects. Students readily and eagerly adapted to the new departmentalized format and grew in confidence as they took on increased responsibility for managing their own learning. In addition to moving forward these key educational initiatives, 2017-2018 saw the Board of Trustees launch a strategic planning process for Curtis. Through this effort, called “Envision Our Future: Help Inspire the Curtis of Tomorrow,” we are embarking upon a comprehensive and inclusive journey that will help us discover and appreciate our strengths as well as identify areas of opportunity. We are proud of Curtis’s reputation for academic excellence, the strength of its community and the rich traditions that connect so many generations of students to the heart of the school. As Curtis nears the century mark, we are excited to begin to chart the next chapter for our school. New programs like World Languages, the departmentalized 6th grade, and the challenge to envision our future are just a few examples of the many ways in which faculty, administration, staff and the Board of Trustees continually strive to enhance

our school and steward its mission. Our dedicated teachers work tirelessly to provide an educational environment that is joyful, thoughtful and vigorous. And, through these efforts, Curtis students continue to be developed and nurtured to be compassionate young people who are confident problem-solvers. Curtis has a dedicated and hardworking faculty, staff and board and is also very fortunate to enjoy a strong partnership with a deeply committed parent body. Throughout the year, the Curtis community benefited from the time, talent, efforts and monetary gifts so generously contributed by our parents, grandparents and alumni families. It is due to this combined generosity and love for Curtis that we are able to ensure that the beauty, comforts and security of our unique campus and the sounds of young people learning and growing continue each day. To all members of our community—families, faculty, staff, alumni and friends—please accept our deepest and heartfelt appreciation for the myriad ways you ensure our ability to realize the school’s mission and prepare the children in our care to take their place in the world of their future. As we embark on a new school year, we look forward to continuing and further strengthening our partnership with you in providing a joyful learning environment for all of our students.

Warm regards,

Dr. Meera Ratnesar Head of School

These experiences, made possible by the generosity of key donors, enrich our learning community by creating new perspectives, promoting cross-cultural competency and fostering global thinking in our classrooms.

Journey of Arctic Discovery

By Dr. Linda Schaffer, Science Teacher (Grades 4-5) This summer, with assistance from a Curtis educational travel grant, I was able to explore the Kenai Peninsula, a portion of Alaska comprised of complex biomes that can change, within a mere few hundred meters, from temperate rainforest (boreal forest) to taiga, to tundra. Traveling with my husband, I kayaked through fjords, with glaciers to the right and lush forests to the left. North of the Kenai, we experienced Denali National Park, very different from the Peninsula, but with equally fantastic geology and wildlife. My summer travel grant proposal was threefold: (1) to document the diverse Arctic biomes, so that I could create an authentic model for my 4th Grade Biome Project; (2) to observe and discuss with experts changes in those delicate ecoclines, where life is so specifically adapted that climate change could devastate living organisms; and (3) to learn about the culture of the Athabaskan people. We began our travels in Anchorage, where we discovered the Anchorage Rasmuson, a museum that combines art and artifacts throughout its collections. It is an amazing place where visitors can experience Athabaskan culture, ancient and modern, as well as Alaskan dinosaur fossils combined with the art of Ray Troll in a fascinating exhibition titled “Cruisin’ the Fossil Coastline.” The next stop was Whittier, an historical portage town. First inhabited by Russians seeking otter fur, it was later the entry point for American soldiers stationed in Alaska. Almost all of the town’s 220 inhabitants currently live in one tall concrete block tower that was built for U.S. military families in 1953. The town was mostly abandoned before the infamous Good Friday earthquake of 1964 wreaked havoc on it and the rest of the Kenai. The dull town, visually reminiscent of the Eastern bloc era, sits in stark contrast to the majestic beauty of lush vegetation and tidewater glaciers directly across Prince William Sound. We continued our journey along the Peninsula to Homer, where I was able to meet with members of the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. With a ranger as our guide, we explored Kachemak Bay, where we observed many types of birds, otters, seals and whales. While hiking through the boreal forests, we were struck by the abundance of edible berries, leaves, stems and roots. Even on the rocky shores of the fjords, growing right down to the high tideline, one can find thick, delicious leaves that taste like green beans. Next, we spent two days kayaking the fjords around Resurrection Bay. As we paddled among the “bergie bits” that had calved from huge glaciers, we observed curious otters and passed seals resting on the bergies. We were chilled by strong winds as we approached the glaciers and were awed all night by the thunder of ice breaking off into the water. By the end of the first day, we were rainsoaked and confined to 13

miserable hours in the tent. However, we were revitalized and ready to continue our kayak explorations when the next day dawned magnificent and sunny, with water like a sheet of glass. The second part of our journey was in Denali Park. There, I learned about the kindness of the Athabaskan people and how the survival of the explorers and immigrants depended upon their knowledge and generosity. The Athabaskans have continued to be a huge influence on the lives of other Alaskans. In Denali, I observed blond grizzlies, enormous moose, regal caribou, a variety of eagle species, the elusive lynx, and a host of other interesting animals. I was accepting, but saddened, to witness evidence of the melting permafrost, knowing the possible devastating effects of this change on the fragile Alpine biomes. The plants and animals are specifically adapted to survive there, and changes in the numbers of animals and rapid draining of the glacial kettle lakes are already taking place. Staying at an Athabaskan lodge, deep in the Park, where we were hosted by one of the most famous Iditarod-musher families, we interacted with sled dogs and observed their summer training. While biking on an unusually clear day, we were lucky to get a good look at Mt. Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley). I was also able to observe the ecotones (transitions between biomes) that I wanted to document for my 4th Grade Biome Project. The travel fellowship program took me to a place that I most likely would not have otherwise seen in my lifetime and that cannot easily be described by words or photos. I have been enriched in the visceral way that one can only be through firsthand experience. C U RT I S A N N UA L R E P O RT 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8   |   7

A Fairy Tale Trip

By Amy Wiggins, Curtis Library and Media Specialist Storytelling sparks the imagination of the listener and fosters an appreciation for art, literature and the world. The oral tradition of storytelling has always acted as a means for humans to communicate, express feelings and share their experiences. Civilizations and cultures around the world and throughout history have practiced the art of storytelling through a variety of mediums. And it is one of these, fairy tales, that was the focus of my travels through Germany and Denmark. Traditional fairy tales come in two forms: literary and oral. Most fairy tales first found expression in an oral form that took on the personality and purpose of the narrator. The literary fairy tale is the written form of these oral stories. Among the most famous creators of this genre are the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Andersen, who developed their tales towards the end of the 17th century. The Grimm brothers collected stories from a variety of sources and then edited the oral versions to suit their writing style and the historical and cultural context of their lives. Hans Christian Andersen mixed his life experience with his fantastical imagination to create stories that reflected his world. Fairy tales have held a special place in many people’s hearts, including mine since childhood; and they continue to be an irreplaceable, beloved and essential aspect of our culture. Traveling first to Germany, I delved into the lives of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm—where they were born, where they grew up, and how they came to collect their famous fairy tales. The Grimms spent the majority of their professional lives as librarians and professors in Kassel, Germany. They compiled the most complete dictionary of the German language to date, and they collected, compiled and edited Children’s and Household Tales, more commonly referred to as the Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The Children’s

“I NOW HAVE A RICHER UNDERSTANDING OF FAIRY TALES—ONE THAT GOES BEYOND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND ENCOMPASSES THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THESE STORIES.”

and Household Tales was published between 1812 and 1857 in a total of 17 editions. Wilhelm rewrote the stories again and again, each time incorporating new source material and rustic expressions. He gave the stories their characteristic fairy-tale tone that continued to grow more distinct with time. The Grimm brothers firmly believed that words are not static; rather, language changes constantly. It is this adaptability that has contributed to the success of these stories through the ages. From Germany, I moved on to Denmark to research another giant in the literature of fairy tales. Born into extreme poverty and achieving fame and success during his lifetime, author Hans Christian Andersen is famous for tales such as the Princess and the Pea, the Little Mermaid, and the Ugly Duckling. His education, imagination, artistic talent, resilience and life experience all led to the creation of the world’s most renowned and treasured fairy tales. He viewed his own life as a “lovely fairy tale, happy and full of incident.” His stories are based on this naïve sense of morality and, as such, they offer an alternative world to reality. This allows people to look more critically at the morality of the real world and take steps to reform and improve upon reality. My travel experience has helped me learn about an essential part of human culture. I now have a richer understanding of fairy tales—one that goes beyond the happily ever after and encompasses the history and evolution of these stories, including where they came from, how they have impacted the world, and why they continue to captivate new generations. I am excited to incorporate my insights, as well as the stories I’ve collected, into my library lessons in ways that will continue to enhance our students’ learning about literature, culture and their own identities. I can’t wait to capture the imaginations of our children with these four little words: “Once upon a time.”

Ecuador in My Heart

By Vicki Palmquist Lockhart, Third Grade Teacher I love maps. I can page through an atlas for hours and pass the time spinning a globe, stopping it with the touch of my finger, and imagining a journey to a distant land, kind of like Annie and Jack do in the Magic Tree House series. When the Curtis Educational Travel Fellowship opportunity presented itself, I took a deep breath, grabbed a globe and started spinning. In celebration of Curtis’s new World Languages Program, I wanted to travel to a country with Spanish as its native language. So, when my finger landed on Ecuador, I eagerly started my research and developed a travel proposal. As a 4th grade teacher at Curtis for seven years, I borrowed from the 4th grade social studies curriculum and traveled with the intention to live as a social scientist—one who asks questions about the economy, geography, history and government. I was excited to experience firsthand the many facts I had learned from my research. The geography of Ecuador offers a rare opportunity to stand with one’s feet planted in the northern and southern hemispheres at the same time, and I did so with the help of a taxi driver who vowed to drive me “to the middle of the world”—the Equator. Ecuador is a country of vastly different landscapes, including the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountain range, active volcanoes, coastal lowlands of the Pacific Ocean, and the Galápagos Islands. The capital city of Quito, established in the 16th century, is a World Heritage site filled with Catholic churches, convents and cobblestone streets. The national park system supports conservation efforts and limits travel to the Galápagos Islands to protect the fragile ecosystems and animal species that can be found nowhere else on Earth. The Charles Darwin Research Station on Isla Santa Cruz provides a wealth of information about Darwin's theory of evolution and includes his notes about the insects, birds, iguanas and tortoises he observed as he sailed on the H.M.S. Beagle, among the archipelago, in 1835.

“I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE INTERDEPENDENCE AND COEXISTENCE OF THE COMMUNITIES OF PEOPLE AND THE HABITATS OF THE ANIMALS.”

I filled my notebook with observations and questions, and along the way, I realized that my research as a social scientist transcended the facts I was gathering. I discovered that my trip to Ecuador was about the people and the community in which I was immersed. The stories of ancestors, the banana and chocolate farms, the handiwork of woven ponchos and Panama hats, and the protected lands for animals above and below the sea captured my heart. On the Galápagos Islands, locals guided me through the unique habitats of endemic animals. It was amazing to encounter giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, penguins, marine iguanas and sharks and rays. But more than the places I went or the animals I saw, I was impressed by the interdependence and coexistence of the communities of people and the habitats of the animals. I am now jumping into a new role as a 3rd grade teacher with a social studies curriculum that is focused on community, making the lessons of my time in Ecuador relevant in a way I could not have foreseen. The trip to Ecuador remains close to my heart in these first weeks of school as I recognize the role I play as a teacher, parent, and colleague on campus. I am inspired to be a careful observer—like Darwin was as an explorer in a new land—to learn about our students, families, and fellow educators in meaningful ways, and to consider how I can be an active member of the Curtis community, coexisting among the unique ideas, perspectives and opinions of others. I am inspired to push myself and my students to grow strong in body, in mind, and in heart, independently and collectively, within the Curtis community and beyond.

Report from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Leadership C U RT I S A N N UA L R E P O RT 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8   |   1 2

Dear Curtis Families and Friends, Our students and teachers are well into the start of a new school year. The campus is filled with excitement and anticipation for all the opportunities that Curtis will provide for another rich year of growth and learning for our students. Thank you to all Curtis families (past and present), faculty and staff, and the many friends of our school for your generosity that made our Annual Fund campaign 2017-2018 a great success. I also want to acknowledge our Parents Association and our families for the many ways they contributed to the life of our school in the past year. The time, talents, resources, and energy of our Parents Association, and of every parent, grandparent and family who supported, coordinated or participated in school activities and events, are priceless gifts that enrich the experience of everyone at Curtis. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are deeply grateful to have such an extraordinary, engaged and dedicated Parents Association and community of families partnering with and supporting our school. Each year, in the same way that we graduate the 6th grade class, so too do we say goodbye to some members of the Board of Trustees. In June 2018, we bid farewell to three trustees who have served the school well. Stephen Rose, my predecessor as Chair, was a member of every board committee and chaired many of them during his long service to Curtis. Also ending his tenure is Jerry Neuman, who served on a number of board committees over the years—most recently the Building and Grounds and Head of School committees. Jerry was a Board Liaison for Diversity, Multiculturalism and Inclusivity and a valued advisor, helping to steward the school’s Master Plan through the approval process. Kathleen Paul also leaves the board after serving on the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Advancement Committee and the Major Gifts Subcommittee. We thank these individuals for their dedication and their many contributions to our school.

We are fortunate to have three accomplished individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise join us as trustees this year: current and alumni parent Dilip Bhavnani, current parent Steve Chang, and Curtis alumnus and Windward School administrator Kevin Newman ’83. I invite you to view their profiles on the following pages. This new school year is a particularly meaningful one as our community continues the long-range strategic planning effort, “Envision Our Future,” that was initiated last spring. Our faculty and administration are building on the success of the initiatives that were rolled out in 2017-2018, beginning the move to a new math curriculum (Singapore Math), and continuing the Depth of Study groups to assess all areas of the curriculum and develop Goals of Learning for each one. With the initiatives underway and all the possibilities they promise for our school, it’s an exciting time to be part of the Curtis community.

Best regards,

Allan Schweitzer ’́79 Chair, Board of Trustees

What a fantastic year 2017-2018 has been!

Letter from the Parents Association President

Teamwork

Dear Families and Friends of Curtis School, The power of our Curtis School community never ceases to amaze me and reminds me time and again how lucky we are to be a part of such a wonderful partnership between parents, students, faculty and administrators. In 2017-2018, the Parents Association, made up entirely of parent and guardian volunteers, worked tirelessly to create meaningful programs and activities to support our school, one another, and the faculty and staff, and to help nurture and grow our most important investment: our children. From fundraising and community raising through the Curtis School Fair, Curtis Celebrates!, Party Book, Book Spree, and Cougar Wear, to enrichment programming like Buds and Seedlings, Families Helping Families, Curtis Cares Community Service Day, Go Global Week, and International Lunch Day, to Faculty and Staff Appreciation Days, and support for Back-to-School Nights, Admissions Open Houses, Emerging Artists, the Library, and much, much more, it is truly the collective power of our volunteer energy and commitment that makes Curtis School such an special place.

We are simply the sum of the people around us. If we work together, we all succeed. – Kirstin Meyer, Parents Association President, 2017-2018

Our volunteer power is our most valuable resource. It is through your ongoing support that we’re able to work together to make our community stronger. And, when you create a strong sense of community, amazing things happen. All of the PA’s efforts raise money for financial aid, support our faculty and staff, educate our parents, enrich our children’s school experience, offer services and support to our community partners, and continue to build a cohesive and robust community spirit on and around our campus. There aren’t enough ways to say “thank you” for all of the time and talent our families contributed towards making this past year’s programs and events successful, and I am grateful to be raising my children in a place that includes so many parents and guardians who are willing to take time out of their busy lives to serve the greater Curtis community. As PA President, you realize quickly that we are simply the sum of the people around us. If we work together, we all succeed. We have so many warm and generous hearts. And that is what makes this job the best one of all— getting a chance to work with so many incredible people. Thank you for your support this year. With heartfelt gratitude,

Report on Philanthropy Curtis School gratefully acknowledges the generosity of our families, employees, trustees, alumni and alumni families, and foundations, corporations and other friends of the school. The financial support from this broad community demonstrates your belief in the value of our educational mission and touches nearly every facet of the school’s programs and operations. The Annual Fund provides support for Curtis’s exceptional academic, arts and athletics programs. It enables the school to attract and retain our outstanding faculty and staff, allows us to provide financial aid to students who would otherwise be unable to attend our school, and contributes to the maintenance and improvement of our beautiful campus. Gifts to Endowment help secure the school’s financial future. Restricted Gifts fund specific programs and initiatives that further enrich our learning community. Thank you to everyone who made a gift in 20172018, and, by so doing, affirmed your commitment to Curtis and made our fundraising year a success.

THE FUTURE OF EVERYTHING FAIR

Many thanks to the following donors, whose contributions helped underwrite the Parents Association's sparkling and successful fundraising event Curtis Celebrates! A Gatsby Night. Our community had a Roaring Twenties good time, dining, dancing and celebrating at The Majestic in downtown Los Angeles, with proceeds benefitting the Curtis School Financial Aid Fund.

We are deeply grateful to all who responded to a special request for direct support of our Financial Aid Fund at Curtis Celebrates!, the Parents Association's major fundraiser. These gifts, combined with proceeds from the event, are instrumental in ensuring that Curtis is able to offer admission and continued support to deserving students who otherwise would not be able to attend our school.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the following families and individuals who sponsored The Future of Everything 2017 Curtis Fair. Your support helped continue the longstanding joyful tradition of the annual Curtis Fair, bringing us together for a memorable and fun-filled day that benefitted the Financial Aid Fund.

Our Mission

Design SMOG Design, Inc.

Childhood is brief and precious, a time of limitless potential and essential development. It is also a time to be savored for its own wonders, as it will not come again. A Curtis education honors these truths within a caring and inclusive community. We foster an active partnership with our families based on a shared commitment to our mission, our values, and the special joys of childhood.

Printing ColorNet Press

Our goal is to develop, in every child, a sound mind in a sound body governed by a compassionate heart. We balance traditional and innovative pedagogical approaches in providing a well-rounded, challenging education. We develop children’s academic, intellectual, creative, athletic, and social potential through dynamic teaching and by actively engaging them in their own learning and moral growth. As a result, our students become young people of character who are also critical thinkers, effective communicators, respectful collaborators, and resilient problem solvers. Curtis graduates leave us as whole, selfdisciplined, ethical beings, who are well prepared to pursue, confidently, the next stage in the journey of their lives.

Diversity Statement Curtis School is committed to fostering a diverse community of students, employees, and families; to supporting an inclusive environment for all children and adults; to developing the cross-cultural competency of all its constituents; and to valuing the influence of a wide range of experiences and backgrounds in our curriculum, programs, and interactions as members of a learning community.
