Curry Todd: Volunteer State

Curry Todd was born and raised in Tennessee and is proud of his Volunteer State heritage. He was born on the very last day of 1947 in Juno, Tennessee. After completing high school Curry Todd received scholarship offers from universities all over the country who were eager to recruit him as a promising college basketball player. He was named the Tennessee Player of the Year at Treadwell High School in Memphis and named to the all-Memphis basketball squad. In the end, he spurned offers from UCLA, Duke, and other elite basketball programs to play for the University of Memphis team. Following his graduation, Curry Todd began a career in law enforcement. He was a police office in Memphis, Tennessee's largest city. He later worked as a legislative representative and lobbyist for the Tennessee Fraternal Order of Police, a position he held from 1982 to 1987. Curry Todd also worked as a legislative representative and lobbyist for the Memphis Police Department and Memphis Police Association. Curry Todd was nominated to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1998, speaking on behalf of the State's 95th district, which serves part of Shelby County. He is proud to possess solid conservative credentials. He has been a constituent of the Shelby County Conservative Republican Club, the East Shelby County Republican Club, Republican Women of Purpose, the Collierville Republican Club, and to have been a constituent of the Shelby County Republican Steering Committee, along with others. Curry Todd had the professional background to oversee plans to modernize law enforcement in Tennessee. He was handpicked by then-Governor Lamar Alexander to draft, plan and enact uniform standards of employment, training and certification for the state's police officials. In 1981 Curry Todd was nominated by the Peace Officers Standard Training Commission (POST) to draft and enact police legislation with the Tennessee General Assembly. That same year, he began service on Legislative Study Committees in the Tennessee General assembly in the area of corrections and criminal justice. Curry Todd is also a constituent of the NRA and the Tennessee Wing Civil Air Patrol. He is a constituent of the Board of Directors of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a national organization of state legislators committed to reducing the size of the Federal government. The achievements of Curry Todd have been widely recognized throughout his career, and he has been the recipient of many honors. These include the Tennessee PTA Life Time Achievement Award in 2006, the Tennessee Home Educators Association Lawmaker of the Year Award for 2001, the Award of Excellence Shelby County PTA Award in 2008, the FedEx Forum Lawmaker of the Year Award in 2009, and the Tennessee Association of Nominated Officials Lawmaker of the Year Award in 2010.
