BUILDING ON SUCCESS Carmel’s Arts & Design District played host this summer to three of the biggest events in the city’s history: CarmelFest, Rock the District and the Carmel International Arts Festival. The corner of Main Street and Range Line would be transformed into a three-story building resembling the Old Town Shops across the street, below.

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

Northeast corner of Range Line Road and Main Street The site is occupied by a National City Bank branch and a street-front parking lot. City leaders and bank officials have been discussing ways to transform the area into something resembling the Old Town Shops across Main to the south, although no agreements have been signed. An artist’s rendering of one possible look was presented to bank officials by the city, although the eventual project might be quite different, as long as it fits with the city’s guidelines for the Arts & Design District. The rendering shows an L-shaped building along North Range Line and East Main Street, with

parking in the back, just as seen at the Old Town Shops. The city’s involvement would deal primarily with the parking and the streetscape, and funds would come from the Carmel Redevelopment Commission budget. The bank would spearhead the project, including the choice of contractors. The bank would occupy the street level and would still have a drive-up window. Offices or arts-related businesses such as galleries would be on the upper floors of the three-story building. One item the city wants is an outdoor sculpture area, right on the corner. A National City spokesman said it’s premature to comment on any plans for the branch.

But the city and private business have even more in store for the district in the coming months, and here’s an update on what to expect. If it comes to fruition. Carmel Arts Condos Dozens of festival-goers took advantage of the Carmel International Arts Festival Sept. 22-23 for a free tour of the Carmel Arts Condos at 30 W. Main St. Developed by the Stenz Corp., the four units are atop the Lurie Building. Work is proceeding on the model condo, which occupies the third and fourth floors at the northwest corner of the building. It should be completed in about six weeks and will have hardwood floors on the third floor and carpeting on the second. The other two units will be left somewhat unfinished so the buyers can customize their homes. The prices range from $675,000 to $800,000. If you are keeping score, the condos also have a new name. Formerly the Renaissance Condos, their name was changed to reflect their location in the Arts & Design District. (For information on the condos, call Stenz Corp. at 262-4999.)

Entry to the Carmel Arts condos is through a door on the side of the Lurie Building.

Tuesday Morning Hearthview Residential and the city have purchased the property and building, which has been determined to be structurally unsound, according to a city official. One factor in the project is discovering what lies under the building. When utility crews go digging, unforeseen problems sometimes are discovered. This is what happened with the Lurie Building at 30 W. Main St., where a foundation to an old water tower was discovered. In that project, they were able to pour a new foundation around the old one.

The city would like to create a pedestrian-friendly corridor south on Third Avenue SW to the City Center.

Pedestrian connection between City Center and Arts & Design District City officials hope the former Tuesday Morning site will be replaced next year.

Sources: City officials, Carmel Redevelopment Commission, Stenz Corp.

City officials are moving ahead with plans to create a pedestrian corridor that will link the City Center project with the Arts & Design District. Rezoning of about 60 parcels of land along Third Avenue SW from City Center drive north to Main

Street has been proposed. Seven of them are already owned by the city. The properties currently are zoned for business or residential use, and the city wants them zoned for any use, to be defined by the Carmel Redevelopment Commission.

OUR TAKES Our position is presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) needs to shed her flip-flops. Last week at a Democratic debate, she stood firm against any notion of torturing terrorists. Nearly a year ago, she said torture would be A-OK, especially if there was “something imminent.” OK, so which is it? The bigger question, we suppose, is what is the next track-jump for Slick Willie’s boss? Hillaried, again. Clearly, this latest flip-flop endears her to the people from whom she is attempting to entice votes. After reportedly meeting with U.S. defense brass, though, her “ah-ha” moment appears to be imperfect. She is overdue in signing a pledge

with the American Freedom Campaign, which has demanded those seeking to move into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to oppose all torture. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) joins Hillary as the only laggards among the Democratic aspirants in signing the petition. Of course, the petition was begun in August, long after she conferred with the military leaders. This is mild, certainly, when stacked up against one of the most potent hot sauces of all time: socialized medicine. Put her in office, America, and you’ll get EXACTLY that for which you will have paid. Also, did you hear President Bush saying last week he cares about the budget and out-ofcontrol spending? Are you still laughing, too?

HIGH COURT COURTS DEBATE Our position is the U.S. Supreme Court is sitting on a potential powder keg, given its votes could significantly impact next year’s elections. Yesterday, The First Monday in October, the jurists took the bench after having agreed last week to hear foremost cases concerning election law and capital punishment. With respect to election law, the high court decided to two arguments on the state’s voter-identification measure, which requires all voters to show a governmentissued picture I.D. at polling places before voting. On the other front, our justices will determine whether the combination of chemicals used often to execute prisoners is constitutional or whether it should be considered cruel and unusual punishment,

which is in contrast to the hallowed Eighth Amendment. It is said that Indiana’s voter-ID law is the most restrictive. We can hear the howling all the way to Chicago. Get over it. While we’re the last to ever suggest additional governmental controls, this one makes sense – and it should be deployed nationally. If elections are to be fair, then you need to “qualify” to cast your vote. It’s really that simple. As for the lethal-injection issue, perhaps if the practice is judged to be cruel and unusual, that just might be enough of a deterrent to end all the senseless fatal activity across this state. Last we checked, murder is cruel and unusual, too.

Whoops! If you’re in the publishing industry and Hillary is in the middle of a presidential campaign run, don’t dare plan a story about her that contains negative elements or you’ll lose the opportunity to feature Bill in the process. GQ magazine had planned that piece on Hillary. Some reports called it unflattering, and Bill stepped in, telling the brass that unless the story on his wife was scrubbed, they could kiss his saxophone with respect to him being the cover boy for the December issue. The Hillary story has been spiked – and with no specific elaboration from the GQ brass. Makes you think, doesn’t it? *** Signs, signs, everywhere the signs – except they’re not. With just a bit more than a month left until the general election, the only candidate signs we’ve seen are from independent mayoral challenger Marnin Spiegelman, whose team has done a fine job of peppering the city with them. With everything that’s at stake across all races, we wonder why others haven’t maintained a similar “marketing” strategy. *** Relax, Gov. Mitch! Thank you for Terry Anker’s encouraging words in his “It’s A Good Time To Think” column (Current In Carmel, 9/18/2007). It is good to know that those foreign countries have not forgotten our great pain of 9/11. They left us holding the bag. But you know, we are a free people, the beneficiaries of sacrifices by our countrymen who fought and died for that freedom. It is in our blood and we would deny who we are if we did not continue that fight for freedom. My son just graduated from Marine Boot Camp in San Diego. If ever I was proud of

It was so quiet in the stands as their drill instructors passed out their pins. All you could hear were the sobs of the mothers of those young men. Why were we crying? Pride, unquenchable pride. The fear of what lay ahead for them would come later. Yes, Terry, this nation will be better because of the challenges of militant Islam, but only if we stand strong and maintain a president who will not turn from those challenges. Kathy Valcore 46032

of dirt and turns black, now forever one with the Berber and a screaming reminder that we live in a pig sty. On rare occasions, we do allow our children to partake of the good stuff — Hubba Bubba Max — but almost always regret it before the sugar rush ends, usually in four minutes. I watch in horror as my little origami masters remove the now Silly-Putty-like substance from their mouths (because it’s so much more fun in their hands!) and transform their pieces of watermelon blast into swans and crickets. Amazing, yes, and yet, very, very frightening. So, what to do? For the time being, and since I still have some budding artists in the mix, I think I need to stick with the boring, sugar-free gum. Enduring the complaints of children is far better than cutting clumps of gum-matted hair off a 3-year old any day. Of course, I could also start enforcing the nightly teeth-brushing and be done with bubble gum altogether. But what’s the fun in that? Peace out! It. Tastes. Fine. Now. Bubble gum: you either love it or hate it, and as a Soccer Mom of four, I haven’t yet decided which side I’m on. On the one hand, there are lots of brands that whiten, brighten and freshen without the sugar, which in our house, can really come in handy. Like, say for instance, you’ve forgotten to have your kids brush their teeth for a few days (or weeks). I’m not quite sure why, but when we finally make it to bedtime, my husband and I only have enough energy to get kids into their beds. Forget about baths, stories, even PJ’s. Oral hygiene? Umm no. So by letting my kids chew Trident or some other “healthy” sugarless gum, I delude myself into thinking it’s actually replacing the tooth brush. That’s good, right? On the other hand, allowing children under 10 to chew gum results in situations that are just plain gross [see above]. Besides the inevitable “it was only in the sandbox for a second, Mom,” gum is messy. I can’t count the number of times I’ve discovered gum stuck in air vents, entangled in hair, and of course, enmeshed in the basement sandcolored carpet where it attracts every particle

few months back, I had a very interesting car ride home from Fishers. Everything is normal until my 6-year old son asks: “Mom, do you know where my gum is?” “No, sweetie. Did you drop it?” He doesn’t answer. I notice in my rear-view mirror that both my girls have fallen asleep; I resume singing Little River Band’s “Cool Change” (you know you love it, too). Three minutes pass. “Hey, Mom, I found my gum!” “Great. Where is it?” “It’s in my nose.” “You put your gum in your nose?” “Yep.” “Can you get it Danielle out?” Wilson “Nope.” He’s starts crying. “Try blowing it out.” (And don’t wake up your sisters!) He blows through his mouth. “It’s stuck, I can’t get it!” Sniffle, sniffle. “Don’t worry. I’ll get it out with tweezers when we get home.” “OK, Mom.” I sense an ER room in our future. And I’d just finished paying off St. V’s for his nineiron-to-the-chin-induced stitches! Two more minutes of silence. I’ve had to switch back to Radio Disney and am now jammin’ to Hillary Duff. “Hey, Mom. I got my gum out!” “Oh, good! Let’s throw it away when we get home. It’s probably got boogers all over it.” “No, it doesn’t. I cleaned it on my shirt. It tastes fine now.”

California judge recently ordered Britney Spears to take a parenting course and to spend eight hours with a parent coach. As a parent coach, I was asked by my instructor to put together “parent tips” or questions I would ask Britney for the purpose of a press release. First off, I feel we all would agree that Britney’s behavior is out of sync with motherhood and certainly detrimental to her children’s emotional development. If you disagree, I’d like to hear from you so that I might have a different perspective as to her intent as a parent. When reading Becky Kapsalis over these questions, Ask YiaYia please consider them food for thought in your own parenting style. • What is your sense of parenting purpose right now? • How and where do you see your children in 10, 15 and 20 years? • How do you envision helping them get to where they want to be? MAKING THE EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH CUSTOMERS

re your decisions driven by emotions or facts? If your answer is emotions, you aren’t alone. Compelling marketing and advertising plays on your emotions and discovers the real reasons you buy. Look at the current eBay advertising campaign as an example: “It’s better when you win” (a far cry from their previous “It” campaign). This campaign focuses on the good feelings evoked after an eBay “win.” After all, that’s one of the real reasons you buy through eBay, right? You like to win. eBay purchases are made every minute David Cain at prices above retail On Marketing because people don’t want to lose. You might not know you are paying too much; you just know that you’re not going to let “mustang66” or some other anonymous person beat you. People want to win. It’s human nature. It’s a need we all have. If given the choice, no one will pick losing. It becomes emotional. For your company to win, you need a

good emotional story to pull you through. It’s how people decide for whom to cheer. If your story focuses on the customer’s emotional reason for buying, your story (and business) will stick in their minds (and tug at their emotions) far after your message has passed. Picture the Chevrolet campaign. What do you think of when you hear John Mellencamp sing “This is our Country” and see scenes of trucks through the years? It inspires you to be a part of American history. Who can forget the Volkswagen campaign? Head-on collisions right in front of your eyes when you (and the passengers) least expect it. It emotionally reminds of hidden dangers and the message is drive a

safer option: Volkswagen. Whether you sell jewelry out of your house or work for a Fortune 500 company, you must make an emotional connection. Find the emotional reason people buy your product or service — it’s out there and it might not be what you think. Create a story around that point. People will remember you if you evoke an emotion. That’s where the saying “any press is good press” comes from — people remember things that spark an emotion — good or bad. • Type: Tri-level • Age: Built in 1965 • Location: Near 131st and Keystone • Neighborhood: Harrowgate is conveniently located near Carmel High School and the new Carmel Arts and Design District. • Square footage: 2,962 including 574 in the lower level • Rooms: This four-bedroom, two-and-ahalf bath home is a traditional layout with separate kitchen, family room and living room, but it has been updated with modern décor and appliances. • Strengths: The owners were happy to discover that the size of the lot purchased as half an acre was later revealed to be a full acre. The backyard was overgrown and unusable until recently. The owners improved the landscaping, removed a non-functional swimming pool and added a privacy fence.

While crunchy, BBQ-flavored mixed nuts may be the last food you expect to make up the difference, one 3-ounce, 150-calorie G.O.A.T Jab — from Muhammad Ali’s new “Greatest of All Time” snack line — provides as much calcium as a glass of milk, plus more than 15 vitamins and minerals. $3, G.O.A.T. food & Beverage Co. — Womenshealthmag.com

In addition to drinking refreshing water, a well-balanced, whole-foods diet that’s low in animal saturated fat is good. The foods that have anti-aging properties include soy, berries, avocado, garlic, nuts, ginger, watermelon, whole meal pasta and rice and fresh water. Other popular anti-aging foods are those rich in antioxidants. The list includes carrots, tomatoes, citrus, almonds, bell peppers and berries. Besides foods with antioxidant factors, nutrients such as calcium, beta-carotene, Vitamin B and zinc are also a must for any anti-aging diet. Fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains and vegetables help speed-bump age-related diseases, visible aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, Crohn’s, Fibromyalgia, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. RED VEINS AROUND THE NOSE? It’s “probably excess sun exposure,” says New York City dermatologist Jody Alpert Levine. UV rays inflame capillary veins and weaken your skin’s top layer, so the red lines become more visible. A laser treatment will shrink the veins (and cost about $500), but concealer does a great job of covering them up temporarily. Try Max Factor Erace, $4.75. — cosmopolitan.com

hat causes aging, other than the fact that we have a birthday each year? We were designed by our Creator to require a certain amount of essential plant nutrients to survive. Eating a balanced and variety of whole foods is indeed the delicious spice of life. Smoking is the No. 1 cause of rapid aging as well as a lack of exercise. We were designed to be active. Aging is also caused by “dead” nutrients from a limited, meat-and-potato diet with a side order of obligatory, mushy vegetables. Boiling vegetables removes about 80 percent of Wendell Fowler the nutrients. Understeam your veggies. There is no fountain of youth, though, at any price. Ponce de Leon thought he found it. The water, however, may have had incomparable purity, essential minerals and other compounds that re-nourished their cells’ building blocks. Because of the lack of fresh whole food while at sea, the fountain’s water probably made old Ponces’ posse feel like a million gold doubloons.

Having a single individual at your business who is in charge of managing the technology needs makes sense, but having that person in charge of actually doing the work rarely makes sense. No matter which direction you go, there are a few essential items that you need to control as the owner of the business. Simple things like knowing your administrator passwords and having a blueprint of your company’s network can save you lots of time, grief and money when an emergency arises or if your existing resource needs to be replaced. Developing a disaster plan in the event of fire, flood, theft and employee sabotage are also essential parts of a solid IT strategy, but most one-man IT departments can’t seem to find the time to be proactive. Don’t put yourself in the position of trying to develop a disaster plan in the middle of a disaster!

BLUEPRINT FOR IMPROVEMENT By Larry Greene, Case Handyman & Remodeling Question: We are in desperate need of more storage for our kids’ school and sports equipment. We really don’t have a mud room, just a small closet and a hallway with a laundry room as you come in from the garage. What are some ideas for creating a mud room and adding storage? Answer: One of the trends in home building is a mudroom with built-in storage. A mudroom is a small room or entryway in a house where wet or muddy footwear and clothing/belongings can be removed. Here are some issues to consider regarding mud rooms: 1. Define your needs: Decide what you need first. In which sports or activities do your children participate? What items do the adults in the home need to store? Consider how your family will use this entryway from the garage. 2. How do you create the space? First look at eliminating the closet. Also look at the feasibility of moving walls. Perhaps you can reconfigure the laundry room and hallway space to provide more space for a mudroom. 3. Storage options: Storage options can range from the very simple to elaborate depending on your budget and the space

available. A good finish carpenter can build custom built-ins. A locker with beadboard on the back with hooks is nice for storing book bags and jackets. Open cubbies above the lockers fit storage baskets for smaller, loose items. A bench is helpful for donning shoes. Open shelving below the bench may work well for storing footwear. Cabinets can range from stock cabinets to custom-built. Also consider whether you want storage cubbies to be open or have doors. 4. Furniture storage options: Retailers such as Pottery Barn and Target sell pre-made storage lockers. Keep in mind these units are relatively short (5-and-ahalf feet) and won’t hold nearly as much as built-in lockers or cabinets that extend to the ceiling. Have a remodeling question? Ask Larry Greene, owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. You may e-mail him at lgreene@caseremodeling.com or call 846.2600.

“The Other Co-pilot”, Jorge Santos

The first show consists of works by California sculptor Theodore Gall, Italian sculptor L’Oriano Galloni, figural painter Larissa Morais, introspective painter A. Dale Nally and Portuguese-American surrealist Jorge Santos. “Eighty-five percent of the artists I represent are from Europe and Latin America,” Lurie said. “I only take on an artist if I can sell their work in multiple markets, and I work with my brothers’ galleries and friends’ galleries in Paris and London to show their work to a wide audience.” In addition to the artists whose works are on display in the gallery’s debut show, other artists to be featured in the years ahead include John Berry, Daniel Brice, Jean-Pierre Chardat, Miguel D’Arienzo, Nelson Dominguez, John La Huis, Alexandra de Lazareff,

Evan Lurie has been looking forward to this week for four years. In 2003, he uprooted his family to move his art gallery from California to Carmel. This week, the curtain rises on the new Evan Lurie Gallery at 30 W. Main St., Carmel. Back in May, when the opening date was uncertain due to construction delays on the eponymous building, Lurie anticipated the excitement of today. “When I closed the Glass Garage, my gallery in West Hollywood, I decided to come here,” he said. “I Evan Lurie met (Carmel Mayor) Jim Brainard in 2003, and he was looking for someone to spearhead the Arts & Design District development at a time I was looking to make a change.” Working behind the scenes for the last four years, Lurie has wooed many other galleries to the district. He hosted a festive invitation-only opening party on Saturday evening and allowed visitors to the Carmel International Arts Festival to wander through the uncompleted space a week before. Now, it’s time for the public to get a look inside as the glass doors — adorned by massive sculptural handles — of the Evan Lurie Fine Art Gallery officially open today.

PURSES FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Prevail Inc., a victim awareness and support program of Hamilton County, will benefit from the 3rd Annual Tri Kappa Silent Purse Auction Boo-tique from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Woodland Country Club, 100 Woodland Lane. Tri Kappa is a philanthropic not-for-profit organization founded in 1901. Admission is free and open to the public. A cash bar will be available and only payment with cash or check will be accepted for purse purchases. For more information, call 773.6942.

Carlos Luna, Ernesto Manera, Jennifer Scott McLaughlin, Sergio Payares, Gerard Priault and Edward Wilcox. The gallery will add one or two new artists a year. Lurie currently represents one local artist, Jason Poteet, for whom he staged a sold-out show in Miami last winter. The pieces in a Poteet show in Los Angeles were half sold before the show opened. Lurie hopes to bring the same buzz to Carmel for the artists in his stable, letting local audiences view their work without a trip to Chicago, Los Angeles or New York.

Kristen Kovacinski Server and bartender at Charleston’s

Where she likes to eat: I like to eat at Mudsocks and Kona Grill – I go there a lot.

1/4 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons oregano 1 teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 6-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breasts

Instructions: Dump all the ingredients into a large resealable bag, seal and shake until the chicken is evenly coated. Refrigerate the bag for 1 to 2 hours. In the meantime, tear off four 15-inch-long pieces of foil.

What she likes: At Kona, the sushi is really good. At Mudsocks, I’ve only been there twice. The sandwiches are pretty good. Why she likes there: I know a couple people who work at Kona. All are really nice; there’s good service. At Mudsocks, I like the atmosphere and bar. There’s good service and it’s really friendly.

Pour one-quarter of the remaining marinade inside each bowl, then press the foil together to seal the chicken inside. Cassidy had been a member of Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 150th Field Artillery in Lebanon. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1992 and joined the Indiana National Guard in 2003. As a guardsman, he was previously assigned to a unit of the 152nd Mechanized Infantry and served with fellow Hoosiers in Bosnia-

Alexus. He has many loving wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins from his father’s side of the family. Services were September 30 at Leppert Mortuary, Smith Carmel Chapel.
