Mintfest 2014 is dedicated to the memory of the wonderful Linda Frickel who we sadly lost in 2013. Linda was a big part of the Lakes Alive and Mintfest family almost from the beginning. She was a joy to have on the team – an extremely warm, kind-hearted and colourful person who worked tirelessly and happily to support Mintfest. Many of you will have encountered her contagious smile and enthusiasm somewhere on your Mintfest travels or at other Lakes Alive events. As well as Mintfest, Linda’s other great passion was all things woolly. She loved to knit. As well as reflecting this in our logo this year, Linda’s colleagues and friends at Homespun in Kendal will be creating a fantastic woolly tribute around the Birdcage on Sunday, filling the space with knitted colour and fun (See page 18). Please do join in! We know Linda would have loved it and she’ll be in the thoughts of all who knew her as we go about bringing you a fantastic festival this year. Linda - this one’s for you. You are loved and missed by us all.

Welcome to Mintfest

As ever, you’ll struggle to get down Stricklandgate on Saturday as we present a packed programme of street theatre, dance, circus and music to enormous crowds of people and (apparently) every buggy in Cumbria. Kirkland’s the focal point this year with an extended schedule of performances in Abbot Hall Park on Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Sunday afternoon, strolling shows and other activities at K Village, late night cabaret in the Maltroom and a great line-up of world music in the Brewery Gardens. Special events range from a weird but wonderful installation/performance in Kendal Castle to Fado and Fire at Stramongate School via Punch and Judy with a twist at Kendal’s newest cultural centre - The Factory - opening its doors, or at least its courtyard, to the public for the very first time. And there are also two walking tours plus a treasure hunt in the town centre which will allow you to see Kendal in new and surprising ways. So another great weekend in Kendal and most of it’s free - whoopee! Jeremy Shine, Artistic Director PS You may be aware that we’ll be taking a break from Mintfest in 2015, as we work on developing a new model for the festival together with the Lake District National Park and South Lakeland District Council. We always want to keep the festival fresh and different so it’s the right time to do this. Don’t worry, we’re planning to be back from 2016 onwards, where you’ll be able to experience Mintfest in a whole new way!

Top tips for a ‘Mint’ fest 1

If you are travelling by car there is a limited amount of free parking at K Village on Saturday and Sunday – please follow the yellow AA signs. If it is full, other car parks in the town are well signed. If you are staying into the evenings, please be sure to check the closing times of the car parks as not all remain open in the evening. 2 Plan what you want to see in advance. This programme has listings of all events & there is a day-byday breakdown at the back. Register on our website to create your own itinerary, which will feed directly to an app so you have it with you at all times during the weekend. 3 Bring a raincoat and sunscreen – the weather can change very quickly. Please avoid using umbrellas which block the view for others. 4 We want as many people to see the shows as possible so please help by sitting down or moving towards the back to

4

www.lakesalive.org

let smaller people and children see. Please actively encourage others to do the same. You might want to bring a camping chair or something comfy to sit on, and there are also sitmats available to borrow at some of the sites. 5 Use the Info Tents marked on the map if you need help with anything (you can also buy a pin badge or piggy bank there). Our team (in Mintfest T Shirts) are here to help so please do ask them anything you need to know. 6 If you don’t know Kendal there is a map in the back of this booklet to help you get around. The locals are a very friendly bunch so if you’re looking for somewhere in particular do ask a passer-by. 7 Toilets are also marked on the map. These outlets have all kindly agreed to allow audiences to use them during their usual opening hours so you don’t even need to pretend to be buying anything (although we’re sure they’d

appreciate it if you did). The Miles Thompson and Wakefield Arms are open throughout festival opening hours and there are also portable toilets in Abbot Hall Park. 8 There are plenty of lovely shops and food outlets in Kendal as well as catering stalls in various locations so make the most of them. Eat and drink plenty to keep your energy up for the full festival weekend. 9 If you have any specific access requirements or need further information to get the most from your visit do get in touch at mail@lakesalive.org and we’ll do our best to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. 10 We’re on Facebook, Twitter & Flickr (@ lakesalive) so please communicate with us before, during and after the festival and let us know what you think. For Twitter please use the #Mintfest14. We’ll be tweeting throughout the festival with updates too.

The Marc Brew Company fuses fierce physicality with tender expression in this outdoor dance piece.
