The 3rd Annual MICE India and Luxury Travel Congress set to reveal the latest trends influencing Indian MICE & Luxury Travelers

T

he 3rd Annual MICE India and Luxury Travel Congress 2015, organized by Dubai based QnA International, is gearing up to bring a host of leading travel & hospitality suppliers to the Sahara Star Hotel in Mumbai, India on 30th & 31st July 2015 to meet with premium corporate MICE planners, destination wedding planners and film producers from the flourishing Indian outbound MICE and luxury travel market. Speaking on the caliber of the event, Sidh N C, Director – Projects, QnA International stated, “The MILT Congress is globally recognized as the only platform in India which brings together highly coveted pre-qualified, corporate MICE & luxury travel buyers from India to conduct one to one business with the best MICE and luxury travel suppliers from all across the globe.” Emphasizing the potential of the outbound MICE market from India, Alexandra Mallosi, Regional Sales Director, Grecotel S.A., from Greece expressed that India's outbound travel market is recognized as one of the key emerging sources of tourism for the world. “The MICE, Business & Luxury travel segment in India has been rapidly growing recently and we expect the potential to rise even further as this is a booming market.” Resonating a fairly similar line of thought, Anja Loetscher, Director, Convention Bureau, Geneva Tourism and Conventions Foundation revealed that incentive tours and conferences from India will be the biggest growing sector for Geneva while Katerina Manousaki from Rodos Palace Resort Hotel Convention Center from Greece reaffirmed that India will be one of the fastest growing tourism markets until year 2020, according to international estimates. For Roman Lafner, Director of Group Sales, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel from Dubai, India has always been a good source market for Dubai and he believes it will continue to grow. Steven Dixon, Regional Manager – South and South East Asia, Tourism New Zealand, divulged that they annually host several incentive groups from India with group sizes usually ranging from 50-150 participants and that it wasn’t uncommon

for larger groups of up to 400 people to travel to New Zealand from India. Vishalakshi Vuyyala, Business Development Consultant, South Africa National Convention Bureau (SANCB) shed some light on the reasons behind this eminent increase in travel from India. According to her, “With pro-government strategies supporting business and with changes in the Indian political & business structures India is expected to increase its business travel and tourism output.” MICE & Luxury travel suppliers from all over the world have narrowed in on the MILT Congress as the go-to platform to conduct business and sign deals with corporate buyers from India. Highlighting this very idea, Suku Verghese, General Manager Sales - M.I.C.E. India, Taj Hotels maintained that this would be the second year running that the Taj Group would be attending the MILT Congress. He said, “Attending for the second time around is testimony to the efficacy of the one to one meetings format that is being followed – which helps to drive clear ROIs for all suppliers and buyers. We were very satisfied with the quality of buyers who were invited last year and look forward to an equally successful and rewarding event this year as well.” Chang Chee Pey, Executive Director, South Asia & MEA, Singapore Tourism Board reaffirmed the same train of thought. He stated, “Through MILT, we have successfully reached out to quality corporates with keen interest in organising key business events in Singapore.” Adding his views on the boutique format of the congress, Hazem Aouad, Cluster Director of Sales & Marketing, Radisson Royal Hotel, Dubai, opined that, “In some fairs it tends to be more relaxed and becomes more of a PR activity which does not always work in our favor, does not have a great impact and there is difficulty measuring the return on investment. With pre-scheduled one to one meetings, this congress gives us the opportunity to sit with the buyers and purely discuss business opportunity and close some deals.” Murat Ayan, Managing Partner, Polar West from Turkey asserts, “We are witnessing the obvious decrease in the business generating power of the traditional tourism fairs and exhibitions. The

pre-scheduled one to one meeting format of this congress allows the parties to concentrate on the terms of services provided & sought after and also saves everyone’s time in terms of connecting with the right match from the beginning.” When it comes to the preferences of the Indian MICE buyers, Rajeev Nangia, Director India, Monaco Government Tourist Bureau, stated that Indians were looking for newer options to explore in terms of destinations for travel. “Price, Connectivity, Inclusion will always remain priority for MICE travelers. There is a rapid shift amongst customers now looking for a wow factor – a lifetime experience,” indicated Shashank Shekhar Mishra, Founder & CEO, Sports Konnect. Kritidech Srabua, Founder & CEO, Oriental Events, Thailand maintained that price, value for money & an interesting program and activity were the defining factors for Indian MICE travelers. Giving their views from a luxury travel perspective, Ignacio Ducasse Gutiérrez, Director, Tourist Office of Spain in Mumbai said that overseas destination weddings from India are becoming very convenient owing to the fact that affluent Indian families have friends and relatives living all over the globe while Vivek Anand, Country Manager, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, said that more and more film production houses are collaborating with overseas tourism boards to shoot films at these destinations. Nhieu Trieu Quy, Director, Viet Excursions from Vietnam expressed his intention towards being a key part of the MILT Congress. “We are looking at a more consolidated and fruitful event where we can actually meet with the most potential buyers from India’s top corporations and travel MICE planners,” he said. Based on the views of the MILT Congress 2015 partners outlined above, the MICE India and Luxury Travel Congress will help these leading suppliers penetrate the tremendously profitable Indian outbound travel market to develop lasting partnerships with the highest quality buyers from the country.

A NEW LOOK FOR NEW YORK'S LA PERLA BOUTIQUE ON MADISON AVENUE

N

ew York. La Perla's historic boutique on Madison Avenue is reopening with a new look, created by architect Roberto Baciocchi, who also designed all the Prada and Miu Miu stores. The design of this 300 m2 of scenographic floor space brings out the influences of great Italian architecture over the two floors containing La Perla's men's and women's collections. The arch is one of the most distinctive architectural elements of Italian art and has become the distinguishing feature of this flagship store with its double-arch façade dressed in Noir Doré marble. The entrance too is structured with a dual level, creating a theatrical display for the La Perla creations, enhanced by the soft, powdery colors of pale blue, dusky pink, amethyst purple and daffodil yellow. The La Perla creations are displayed in transparent cases with gilded metal hangers or presented to customers on velvetlined trays. The area devoted to the men's collections is interpreted in an elegant array of colors, ranging from gray and sky blue to darker tones, with detailing in dark gray metal. Severity

and softness are also found where the large hexagonal-slab paving in Portuguese pink marble meets the rugs and silk tub armchairs in the same pastel tones as the walls. On the second floor of the boutique an espace privé has been created for VIP customers, where exclusive services are also provided such as the new Made to Measure collections and the exclusive Atelier Collection, presented in January 2015 during the Haute-Couture fashion week in Paris. One of the main features of the new La Perla project is the gateway in front of the fitting rooms, marking this space devoted to exclusive intimacy. Another surprise is the metal grating feature that recalls ancient confessionals, and a “Service” bell for calling a member of the sales staff.

The new look of the New York flagship store is part of a wider program of new openings and new looks for existing boutiques all over the USA. Just a few months ago, two new boutiques opened in San Francisco and Atlanta and by the Fall new stores will be unveiled in Houston and Chicago. In Miami Bal Harbour, the La Perla boutique moved to a 2 level, 2700 square ft Flagship location.

With more than 40 million leisure and business tourists in 2014, Turkey is rated as the sixth most visited country worldwide and the government aims to grow this by 50 per cent as the country develops in areas including medical, cultural, sports and wellness tourism, as well as its traditional city break and beach sectors. “Istanbul itself boasts more than 800 properties with nearly 5,000 rooms under development, but as well as looking at this city, we will be seeking opportunities in secondary destinations plus the mid-market sector which is under-served by international brands,” said Mr Blackburn. The projected opening of the Istanbul New Airport in 2017 will give Turkey a gateway that will be the largest airport in Europe with a potential capacity of 150 million passengers a year, adding to the attraction of the country as a destination, he added.

“In addition to unlimited tourist attractions, Turkey is developing as a financial and manufacturing centre, with projects such as the Istanbul International Finance Centre set to attract more commercial ventures into the city – all of which will spur the need for additional accommodation options both in Istanbul and throughout the country.”

Based in Abu Dhabi, Cristal Hotels & Resorts offers both regional and international expertise and a wealth of accommodation models suited to a growing market, concluded Mr Blackburn. www.cristalhospitality.com

Government Measures to Boost Jordan Visitor Tally Welcomed by Amman Hotelier

and encourages visitors to spend longer in the country will be a great boon to us,” he said.

eneral Manager of Corp Amman Hotel Erik Huyer, has applauded the raft of measures announced by their majesties, King Abdullah and Queen Rania, aimed at boosting visitor numbers to Jordan.

An additional initiative announced by their majesties is the implementation of a ‘unified ticket’ enabling tourists to travel around Jordan and visit up to 35 different attractions for a single fee, starting in September.

Timed to coincide with the recent World Economic Forum held at the Dead Sea Convention Centre, the new regulations not only ease visa restrictions and fees to make entry to Jordan a simpler process – but also help hotels financially, said Erik. “We see the reduction in electricity tariffs for the hotel sector as making an immediate beneficial impact on our operating costs, helping the hospitality sector to remain competitive with its neighbours,” he said. “On a wider basis, the waiving of visa fees for both tourists booking through a Jordanian tour operator or travelling independently will encourage longer stays as visitors only qualify for the free visa if they stay a minimum of two nights.”

Erik Huyer General Manager - Corp Amman Hotel Other measures, which include reducing visa fees for tourists entering through Jordan land borders and waiving departure tax for travellers on both charter and scheduled airlines, also have a minimum stay qualification and this represents very good news for hotels in Jordan, added Erik. “As a competitively priced hotel in Amman, the Corp Amman Hotel welcomes both tourists and business travellers, and any measure that cuts costs

“This one-stop ticket will be an incentive for visitors to both enjoy a few days in the gateway cities of Amman and Aqaba as well as travel to iconic sites in Jordan including Petra, Jerash and the Dead Sea which have unparalleled appeal,” said Erik. “While Jordan attracted 5.326million visitors this year, this was 1.2 per cent down on the previous year and by incentivising travellers to explore more of the country, we are optimistic measures such as these will reverse the downward trend.” www.hmhhotelgroup.com/corpamman

In his latest science fiction adventure, the world famous actor and OMEGA brand ambassador wore a 1958 Constellation Automatic Chronometer for his role as Frank Walker. "With every second that ticks by, the future is running out". These words spoken by George Clooney in his new film Tomorrowland instantly set the tone for the action packed story about memory, destiny, and time. So it's highly appropriate that OMEGA shares a part in the tale, seen on Clooney's wrist in the form of an OMEGA Constellation Automatic Chronometer from the late 1950's. Of course, the attractive simplicity of this classic design also shows an enduring style that is still seen in today's models. You can see the film, and the watch, in cinemas right now.

was equally keen. The problem was that we live in different continents. Our plans fell neatly into place. The Expo was to be in Milan which is on the crossroads in Europe so midway for both of us. She lives in the US and I am based in Dubai. Months before the giant Expo opened in Milan our planning went into fast forward. Our time table was set for mid May, giving the organizers enough time to deal with teething troubles and before the hordes of tourists, taking advantage of the summer vacation,

descended onto Milan. We were scheduled to spend about a week in the historic city. 2-3 days for the Expo and another few days to see the magnificent Duomo, the church Santa Maria delle Grazie and the famous painting, ‘Last Supper’, another exhibition highlighting the genius that was Leonardo de Vinci (painter, sculptor, mechanical engineer and more) plus a day or more to check out the must haves of the fashion capital of Italy and feast on the famous street food especially ice-cream. Months ahead, we bought the tickets for the Expo and exhibitions and maps studied as we thought that reaching the Expo grounds might prove a challenge 42 Curiosity July - August 2015

Getting to the Expo site was a breeze and the planners have done an excellent job. Buses connect with clearly marked trains and as one exits at the final destination, one is facing the main entrance of the Expo. Yet, despite getting their relatively early: 10:30, the myriad lines bore witness to an enthusiastic crowd.

strutted around in groups as loud peppy music set the mood. Parents were busy trying to keep track of their kids and seniors, exhausted by the walking, were napping on benches. Of course, Italian ice-cream was available every 20 mts or so. There were kiosks, vans, stalls and restaurants doing brisk business in Italy’s favourite food: ice-cream

Our focus was the UAE pavilion as Dubai the next venue for the Expo in 2020. Greeting the visitors was a group of young Emiratis in national dress that became a magnet for passersby wanting to be photographed with them. A young lad draped his arm around an Emirati hostess who quietly moved

away saying ‘don’t touch!’ The message was loud and clear and the boy hastily moved away! The queue at the UAE pavilion was daunting as it snaked right around the ‘walls’ winding back to the starting point, so we postponed the visit resolving to arrive early the following day. The next pavilion was Kazakhstan, a country which is drawing a great deal of interest as it is hosting an energy exhibition in 2017. Here again, there was a queue but the organizers had found a way to keep them entertained by having folk dancers, musicians, and singers performing, tempting passersby to come in to check out the country’s attractions.

Kazakhstan, for most of us, is a comparatively unknown country hence it was an eye opener seeing the range of agricultural produce on display. Fascinating were the apples (some 1kg each) and quality of saffron apart from an extensive range of fruit, vegetables and spices. All display stands were interactive and bilingual: Italian and English.

Puzzled by a dangling model of a drone, we asked about it. A Kazak hostess explained that their country gets swarms of locust that destroy the crops. The drones monitor the agricultural areas and when a swarm is detected, spores are sprayed to control

them. She mentioned that they are the first in using this method to control the swarms. China’s pavilion matches the country’s size: it is huge. With posters and bill boards showing different provinces leading the way in for visitors, somehow the displays did not live up to one’s July - August 2015 Curiosity 43

expectation. A cute line-up of clay figures of farmers making Peking duck right from the choosing of the duck, slaughter, cooking, serving and family dining proved quite an attraction. A note of sadness and sympathy was directed to the pavilion of Nepal, still getting finishing touches a fortnight after the Expo’s opening. The Nepalese and Italian flags at the entrance were at half mast, somber music set the mood and a large board carried heart wrenching pictures of the devastation caused by the recent earthquakes. Most passersby stopped to drop a contribution into the box for donations. A walk through some of the other pavilions highlighted some interesting details. The American pavilion showcased a new culinary trend of the food trucks. Six custom made trucks serve regional cuisine keeping within the parameters of ‘wholesomeness, sustainability and health’. From the iconic hamburger to classic American desserts, it was a feast. The UK pavilion seemed to have focused more on design. An enormous steel and aluminum ‘hive’ with a platform within was the focal point. Azerbaijan highlighted the country’s organic healthy products while Vietnam’s ’Water and Lotus Pavilion’ dwelt on the problems of water pollution, over fishing and waste. In the ponds at the entrance are cute statues of children playing in the water, tempting visiting kids to do the same. culture, while the Japanese , always dignified and elegant had the slogan ‘Harmonious diversity’ which explained their using a vast range of vegetables, meat and fish. Also, emphasized was the necessity of gratitude before eating, sharing, not being wasteful and appreciating the journey of food from production to the table. The Italian pavilion is an architectural marvel; a showpiece on its own. After the Expo is over, it will remain as a centre for technological innovation for the city of Milan. However, Italy as host country had much more to showcase: each region had a restaurant with specialties for foodies. Judging by the popularity of the area, it was a question of finding a place to sit! All the eating areas were full of happy families, with the spillover sitting in the garden or on terraces enjoying the springtime sunshine.

The UAE Pavilion The following day, we arrived even earlier at the Expo grounds. Others had the same idea and we still had to queue for about 30 minutes. We used the time in chatting with the young Emirati hosts/guides who, rightfully so, are proud of their heritage, retaining the values yet in tune with the times. Young Ayesha was going back to finish her Masters degree in Virginia, USA and another young lady had taken time off from her bank job in Dubai to volunteer for this opportunity. It also gave us time to admire the UAE pavilion which is just stunning and quite unique. 12metre wavy walls finished with a gritty surface to resemble sand dunes towered above providing shade for visitors. Between the walls is a winding path which reminded us of the Bastakiya lanes and charming courtyards of Dubai. Our queue inched around the sinuous walls and we used the time checking out the desert shrubs which are planted at intervals. Finally, we reached the entrance: the first row of boxes highlighted the problems (shortage of water etc) and the second section presented similar

black boxes giving us the solutions. The use of holograms made the display dramatic. Simple, different and easy to understand. The emphasis was in sharing the solutions with the world. The path led up to an auditorium where we watched ‘Family Tree’: a charming 8 minute movie which centred on Grandma living with her family in a khaimah (tent) somewhere in the desert and facing the problems of a harsh environment. Fast forward: the UAE is booming, tall towers emerge from the sand and stand tall against the skyline. Fascinating was the spectacle of a full grown date palm being transported by helicopter for replanting. Grandma and family are content. The UAE pavilion gives a strong message of sustainability, mobility and opportunity (sub themes of the Expo). It highlights the importance of recycling: the walls will be taken back to

the UAE and used in the Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. The volunteers, all in the 20-35 age brackets had etiquette and cultural training central to the history of the UAE and pertinent to the Expo 2020.The pavilion hosts about 3000 visitors a day was the information given to us by one of the volunteers but it seemed to be a lot more than that. All in all, the Milan Expo is just terrific: there is a holiday mood pervading, emphasis is on family and food, fascinating exhibits making it a terrific family holiday destination. With the benefit of hind sight, we should have kept four days for the Expo and another 2-3 days for sightseeing in Milan.

Economic Relations Highlights: Italy - Uae Over the past few years, the UAE have been the first market for Italian export throughout the Arab world. Italy is ranked seventh place overall among supplying countries and third among the European partners. Italian export to the UAE has reached 5.5 billion euro in 2012 (+16.5% compared to 2011). In 2013 the trade exchange experienced a very positive trend: Figures show that Italian exports to the UAE amounted to 5.5 billion Euro and similar figures have been attained also in 2014. The products that have contributed most to the increase in Italian exports to the UAE are the articles of jewelry, capital goods and machinery, building materials, furniture, fashion and foodstuff. The increasing progression in bilateral trade relations proves the great potential offered by the UAE market to the Italian products, and this not only in traditional categories like consumers goods, but also in other sectors of Made in Italy, such as capital goods and technology. The Italian business presence in the UAE is highly qualified and it is represented by more than 300 companies, including units with their subsidiary and many others that operate through local agents.

What is The Italian Trade Agency The Italian Trade Agency-ITA is the government agency that supports the globalization of Italian firms, under the strategies of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Ministry of Economy and Finance. ITA helps to develop, facilitate and promote Italian economic and trade relations with foreign countries. ITA sustains Italian firms in their internationalization process and promotes the marketing of Italian goods and services, as well as the image of the “Made in Italy” products worldwide. Providing information, support and consultancy to Italian companies on foreign markets, ITA promotes and fosters export and cooperation in all areas, increasing and making more effective the presence of Italian companies on international markets. In the frame of its mission, ITA organizes the official Italian participation to fairs and exhibitions, inbound and outbound delegations, business missions of Italian companies to the UAE, and of local buyers and journalists to Italy as well. ITA Office in Dubai, thus the Italian Trade Commission, Trade Promotion Office of the Italian Embassy, covering the UAE and Oman, organizes

around 50 exhibitions and promotional events every year, besides an ever increasing numbers of assistance requests and services rendered to Italian business groups, governmental entities, industrial and private companies covering all sectors of activity. Moreover, the Italian Trade Commission in Dubai informs and assists local companies which are eager to make business with their potential counterparts in Italy.

The Italian Trade Agency and Expo Milan 2015 Expo Milano 2015 is a Universal Exhibition with some very unique and innovative features. Not only is it an exhibition but also a process, an ongoing workshop with the active participation of a large number of players around the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” Running from May 1st to October 31st 2015, the Expo will host over 130 exhibiting countries and is expected to welcome over 20 million visitors, an event featuring Italy as the world stage, where each country will feel committed towards others and with others. The Expo will serve as a meeting point for the world community to share issues of vital importance, such as innovation, progress, the global economy, sustainable economy and improvement of mankind’s quality of life. The flagship of the Italian government at Expo Milan 2015 is the Italy Pavilion, which describes the geographical, historical, cultural and artistic richness of the country.

innovative solutions and best practices that Italy can offer to the international community, a place of visibility for fresh and young energies that work in our country, involving Italian universities, research labs and start-ups. Before and during the months of Expo Milan 2015, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) has been playing an important role in the Road to Expo 2015 institutional campaign: it is an itinerary preview, accompanying the Universal Exhibition scheduled for 2015 in a twofold manner: by hosting buyers, the press and other industry specialists at Italy’s main agro industrial trade fairs, and by promoting meetings with all those attending the main industryspecific events globally throughout 2014 and 2015. Italian excellence to reach target world markets such as Germany, France, the USA, Japan, Russia, China, the UAE and the MENA region. In order to give resonance to the entire production process, Road to Expo 2015 features the promotion of the Italian food system, not only through events displaying high-quality finished products, but also those dedicated to the production chain, thus highlighting technological excellence. As a matter of fact, a remarkable symbol of the ‘Made in Italy’ remains the Food and Agriculture sector, from the harvest to the table, a sector which still represents €180bn a year in terms of turnover, 12 per cent of Italian GDP and 22 per cent of export, with the unique and rich culinary tradition of the

country and of course a busy schedule at top quality exhibitions, both in Italy and all around the world. Nevertheless, the Italian exports in the food sector reached 137.5 million Euro, with an increment of more than 6% in comparison with 2013. Finally, Road to Expo 2015 will highlight the potential of the Italian food sector and bring more value to the vibrating environment that the UAE and Dubai in particular will breath in the next years preparing the Expo 2020. Under the theme “Connecting minds, creating the Future”, the Dubai Expo 2020, taking also into consideration the experience of Expo Milan 2015, will serve as a global hub for new ideas and a springboard for creativity, thus a virtual bridge of experiences between Italy and the entire MENA and Gulf region.

Thailand pavilion at Expo 2015 The Milan expo continues a long tradition of Expositions dating from 1851. The first Expo was held in London and was titled “Great exhibition of works of industry of all Nations”. It was the dawn of the Industrial age and England was at its zenith as a colonial power. It was the brainchild of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband and by all accounts the first ever Expo was a resounding success and over 150 years later the event, held just about every five years since has taken on global proportions. Over time, the Expositions have evolved and now have shifted to nation branding and promotion and this is reflected in the enormous scale of these events with many countries hosting vast pavilions to showcase themselves. As the world becomes more modern the Expo’s have also evolved and the Milan expo was an absolute reflection of our changing times. With 20 million expected visitors over the period of the Expo, it confirms the enduring nature of such events and the keen interest people have in such exhibitions. The Milan Expo opened on May 1st and runs

through end October 2015. With over a 140 countries participating and more than 11 million square feet of exhibition space there is something for everyone. The main theme of the Milan Expo is “Feeding the Planet and Energy for Life” and this concept has been divided into five basic themes that make for a fascinating series of connections between the evolution of food over mankind’s history and what the future might hold for all of us. Pavilion Zero traces the historical relationship between food and people; the Future Food District addresses technological changes across the food supply chain; the Bio-diversity Park which is a large garden with a number of the planets ecosystems are replicated ; and finally Arts and Food a museum exhibition that explorers the inter relationship between food and art over the centuries. There is also a Children’s Park where they can enjoy fun activities, learn and play. In addition to these five themes one of the main attractions is the Clusters. This is a unique extension of the Expo concept where rather than

showcasing individual nations, exhibitions are arranged by a common theme or food group. These 9 Clusters cover Rice; Cocoa and Chocolate; Coffee; Fruits and Legumes; Spices; Cereals; Health, Beauty and Harmony; Islands, Sea and Food; and Agriculture in Arid lands. Taken together, there is a remarkable amount of information and ideas to absorb and the Expo caters to all ages and ethnicities and is has a welcoming and engaging feel to it. To do the Expo justice, one would need to send 4-5 full days there to capture and see it all. Given the overall theme of Food there is certainly plenty on offer. A real smorgasbord of world cuisines and each pavilion and cluster has a remarkable range of both exotic and familiar food products. Given the various themes one gets walk through history and a look at the future while enjoying the present so an all-encompassing experience. The exhibitions are highly interactive and the whole Expo is well planned and laid out with some very unique architectural elements purpose built for this exhibition. Sight Seeing in Milan

The magnificent Duomo

The Duomo Milan cannot match Rome or Florence for their richness and diversity of art and architecture. However, there is still plenty to keep visitors busy for a week. The city was heavily bombed in the Second World War, the magnificent churches and cathedrals were partially damaged but later restored to former glory. 48 Curiosity July - August 2015

Despite having seen the Duomo twice before, it still left me spellbound. The largest Gothic cathedral in Italy and second biggest in the world, it seems to preside over the immense piazza, its majesty just unmatched. Perfect in line and proportion, each inch of it intricately carved and embellished, it stands testimony to the devotion of the workers and worshippers who are responsible for it. Construction of the Duomo started in 1386 and it was completed about 500 years later. The queue near the entrance for tickets was as usual, daunting until someone directed us to a little known kiosk at the back which had no queue. Also, it offered tickets for the elevator to the roof. This was going to be a first for me and we wondered

if the 14 Euro price would be worth it. The magnificent, rooftop view is worth many times the ticket value. It was like stepping into a field of, intricately carved spires, pinnacles and statues. At one spot, they seem to crisscross, forming a fine network. Few tourists seem to be aware of the spectacular display on the rooftop; some wandered by, busy taking selfies and causing a stir was a pair of Japanese ladies, in kimonos and full makeup. Looking down into the piazza Del Duomo gave one a bird’s eye view of the expanse of the city but the sights to visit were within walking distance. Downstairs the queue had lessened so armed with our tickets, we walked in and were enthralled by the size, grandeur, magnificent carvings and statues plus stained glass windows.

The Galleria The next stop was almost across the road. The Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle II was the first shopping mall, built in 1865, to be housed in four storey double arcade. Named after the first King of the Kingdom of Italy it also gives one a glimpse of the luxury of by gone era. Two glass vaulted arcades crisscross forming an octagon and right above is a colossal ornate dome. The Galleria, as it is called, connects the Duomo with the Teatro Alla Scala but it is an important landmark in its own right. Lined with luxury retailers and pricey cafes, it exudes an expensive feel. On a lighter note: McDonalds, the fast food giant was housed there for 20 years and then asked to leave. A law suit later, McDonald’s moved just outside and business continued to flourish. The Galleria gave the vacated spot for a second Prada boutique! 50 Curiosity July - August 2015

The Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition We had bought tickets on line for the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition at the Palazzo de Reale having paid heed to a blurb that said it was easier to schedule a meeting with the Pope than to get tickets for this exhibition at the last minute! Indeed it was the chance of a lifetime to see the exhibition which took 16 years to put together. Leonardo da Vinci has been described as genius, Renaissance Man and jack of all trades. Indeed, just seeing the display of his work: from paintings, to sculpture, drawings of his experiments, and mechanical works, one can only marvel at the scope of his talents. The exhibits came from museums, royalty and nobility. There were several drawings which had come from Queen Elizabeth’s personal collection.

The Last Supper Painting and Tram Ride Leonardo Da Vinci painting and city tour included sightseeing in the area plus a tram ride through the heart of the city. We had bought tickets in advance, which was good planning. The famous painting is near the Santa Maria delle Grazie but over the decades, awareness of pollution, humidity etc has increased and controls have been tightened. Decades ago, it had been easy to see the painting but

no longer. Now, there is a waiting room, then the first sealed room which is a holding area, followed by the next, and finally 15 minutes in front of the painting. During the Second World War, Milan had been heavily bombed but miraculously this painting and one of the Crucifixion survived. We came out of the church and stepped into a thunder storm. The tour guide tried to hold her

group together but it did not work. Everyone wanted to stay dry! We tried the tram ride but we still had some walking to do. Drenched and cold, we thanked her and sought shelter in a cafĂŠ! Tickets are best bought online as there are several options and deals i.e. Special prices for students and seniors.

izwa Souq has remained for hundreds of years home to a number of local industries. A day spent at the refurbished souqs in Nizwa and the surrounding fort is definitely worth it. There were produce stalls, butchers, pottery, date shops, gun shops (for hunting), hardware stores, tourist shops, jewellery, tailors and even a live goat and cattle market held every Friday. Livestock owners, both women and men from nearby areas, bring their animals – mainly sheep, goats, cattle and at times even camels – to the market where they are registered. Registration includes a cursory check of the health condition, judging by appearance and a quick look into the mouth. The livestock owners hire a commercial seller, letting him know their intended price. He then runs with the animal in a circle shouting out the figure. Prospective buyers looking at the animal, shout in their offer. The commercial seller receives a commission when a sale is accomplished. He has to include this amount beforehand in the price which he seeks for the animal. A short walk from the souq is ancient Nizwa Fort (9:00-16:00 / Friday closes at 11:00). Its history dates back to the middle of the 9th Century, today the fort is a museum which gives an insight into Oman’s history and culture. The high tower (left) of the fort gives great views of mountain and town. From Nizwa a drive to Al Hamra will take you to a town where many houses were made from mud. VFS Global provided a solution that was absolutely unique at the time. In fact there were several unique elements about it – centres in multiple cities meant that many more applicants could apply in their own city ; much longer submission timings to enable acceptance of more applications per day ; proper air-conditioned facilities (centres) with all necessary conveniences such as lockers, waiting lounges, cloakrooms, reading material, etc., to ensure the entire experience was secure,

convenient, comfortable and quick for visa applicants ; all the administrative work which was earlier done by the mission was now being done by VFS Global, allowing the mission to focus on the more important part of the entire process – the “judgemental” / decision-making part of whether to grant the visa or not. We developed the business concept in India and then exported it globally. Expansion in the first 5-6 years was slow as we focussed on winning contracts one diplomatic mission at a time and the gestation periods were quite long. Over the years we developed robust systems, processes and controls. We focussed on technology, quality and development of our people to deliver reliable, secure and innovative solutions and services. We did not focus on geographical expansion at the least possible cost, but on developing a high-performance institution functioning as per global benchmarks.

Since how long have you been operating in the Middle East and how significant is the region for you? VFS Global has had business interests in Middle East region for many years. We launched operations in the Middle East in 2004 with the launch of Australia Visa Application Centre (VAC) in the UAE. We expanded our Middle East footprint in 2005 by launching operations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

We have identified the Middle East as a region with high growth potential

However, our association with the Middle East actually preceded the launch of visa centre operations in the region, and dates back to 2002 when we signed a contract with Emirates to process UAE visa applications for Emirates’ customers under the brand Dubai Visa Processing Centre (DVPC) – initially in India and then across the globe.

strong commercial and strategic importance for us, and hence a decision was taken in 2013 to relocate our head office to Dubai. Dubai and UAE in general, have a wealth of assets and conditions that make it a world-class business centre and leisure destination with political and economic stability and high end infrastructure.

In 2013 we were honoured to win the global contract of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saudi Arabia, for providing visa application and biometric enrolment services. We commenced service for Saudi Arabia visas in the UAE in 2013.

Dubai Expo 2020 is round the corner. What does it mean for VFS Global?

Overall we have been able to grow our Middle East operations steadily with the addition of new client governments on a continuous basis, and today we serve 26 client governments across 11 countries and operate 169 VACs in the region with an average of over 2 million applications processed in 2014. You recently moved your headquarters to Dubai from Singapore. Being a global company, operating in 120 countries across 5 continents what made you chose Dubai? How will it help your business in the region? We have identified the Middle East as a region with high growth potential. The Middle East region enjoys multi-dimensional importance from our perspective, fundamentally due to its growing influence on the global political and economic development, which results in increasing travel to and from the region. It is important for our top management to be based in a region which holds 62 Curiosity July - August 2015

We are convinced that Expo 2020 will be a very successful event and will attract huge numbers of travellers from across the world. It will help in channelling more investment in the region, and will further reinforce UAE’s and the region’s pre-eminence in the new global order. With the theme ‘connecting minds, creating the future’, the upcoming Expo 2020 will be a catalyst for progressive change encouraging sustainable growth. We are working on some initiatives which will support the success of this mega event.

Innovation is a cherished value at VFS Global. One of our biggest technology-driven business solutions innovations has been the development of our a unique location independent document processing solution, LIDPro – which incidentally won the Opportunity Award in the Towards 2020 category of the International Business Excellence Award 2015 held in Dubai on 20-21 May! We also have an annual event, iConnect, which is dedicated to technology and innovation where we showcase our latest innovations to governments and have detailed discussions with individual governments on the adaptability and implementation of these solutions. This is a first of its kind event in our industry. We launched iConnect last year in Dubai and will be hosting our second edition of iConnect 2015 once again in Dubai later this year.

What is the volume of business that VFS Global currently handles and what is your expansion strategy? We currently process approximately 19 million applications annually. As far as expansion of our visa services business is concerned, it is largely dependent on policies of governments across the world. It is not a business where we can come up with a great marketing plan and suddenly grow our volumes. Governments decide when and where they would like to outsource visa services and they select the service provider. However we have introduced two new business streams which we believe will help us to further strengthen our leadership position. The first one is Citizen Services, where we offer similar services as visa outsourcing services but services are fulfilled within the client government’s own country and the users of this service are citizens and other residents of the country. This could be for a variety of documents such as permits, licences, etc. The second business stream we are focusing on is Identity Management solutions where we develop end-to-end solutions driven by biometrics and other advanced technologies and integrate them into various documentation processes, such as eVisas, etc. Of course we continuously work on developing innovative solutions and on enhancing our services which help us to strengthen our competitive advantage and build VFS Global’s brand credibility and brand equity, which in turn contributes to the growth of our business.

With the theme ‘connecting minds, creating the future’, the upcoming Expo 2020 will be a catalyst for progressive change encouraging sustainable growth How significant is technology in your business and how are you preparing for the future? We embrace technology as a key business driver and as a differentiator which strengthens our competitive advantage. We also recognise that technology is extremely dynamic and it is very important to have access to the latest and most relevant technology – hence we have a strategic partnership with one of the world’s leading technology companies, HP. We work jointly with HP to develop and deploy advanced technology based solutions to fulfil the vision and requirements of our client governments. The end objective is strengthening and streamlining control over processes which will shape the future of visa processing and border management.

We see a clear trend of countries requiring electronic solutions relating to the visa process – such as eVisa – and are working on developing advanced solutions for the same. Simultaneously, we are also working on developing mobile channel solutions for visa application processing. Over the past few years we have developed strong core competence in setting-up and managing biometric projects and in developing and integrating end-to-end biometric solutions. We will now continue to build on this development. This includes facial matching solutions, passport verification, biometric solutions and border management support. We believe that Identity Management is going to play an increasing role in various processes across industries, and we are working on developing our capabilities and solutions to meet this increasing demand for high-end Identity Management solutions which is one of our key strategic priorities. Furthermore, VFS Global has successfully developed a business model that delivers citizen centric services integrating identity management solutions for governments within their home-

Ajman:

A Fast Growing Destination H.E Faisal Al Nuaimi, GM, Ajman tourism, takes time out of his busy schedule to speak with Curiosity Middile East and shares his plans and vision.

What is your client mix as far as tourists are concerned? Are they coming to Ajman more to do business or with families? Ajman visitors are from all nationalities. And, according to Ajman Vision 2021 and the strategic plan of Ajman Tourism Development Department, ATDD aims to increase the number of visitors to the emirate in 2015 by 25 percent, compared to the number in 2014 which was 850,000 visitors, from only 600,000 in 2013. ATDD targets the number of five million visitors to Ajman in 2021. And, in numbers I can tell you that Ajman tourism revenues reached nearly AED 300 million in 2014, compared to AED 220 million in 2013, taking into consideration that average room rates in was AED 275 for one night. In 2014, average hotel occupancy rates reached 65 percent. Four-star hotels came first before five-star ones on the list of occupancy by guest numbers, while the list of occupancy classification by nationality came as follows: Russia, CIS market, UAE nationals and residents, Arab countries, GCC countries, Asia and Europe. About 100,000 Europeans visited Ajman in 2014, 30,000 of them were German citizens. As for the number of Ajman Museum visitors, it was doubled in 2014 to reach 26,000 visitors, compared to 13,000 in 2013. The number of hotel establishments in Ajman reached 31 in 2014, compared to 29 in 2013. The total number of rooms and units became 2992 in 2014, from 2610 in 2013. The number of hotel beds reached 4938 in 2014, compared to 4235 in 2013. How far is the progress with Ajman’s tourism classification project? The project was completed 100 percent. ATDD Chairman Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi approved classification standards for furnished apartments’ establishments in Ajman in accordance with world standards. The move marked the third and last stage in a project on classification of tourism establishments and activities in the emirate. Kicked off early in 2014, the project included another

estimated at AED 90 million, compared to AED 77 million in the same period in 2014. The number of hotel nights was doubled to 440,000 nights in Q1 of 2015, compared to only 240,000 nights in Q1 of 2014. Asian and African nationalities were high on the list of guest nights, followed by GCC nationals, and then other Arab citizens. The number of visitors to Ajman in the first quarter of 2015 reached 120,000, and hotel occupancy rate increased to 70 percent, compared to only 56 percent in the same period in 2014. The number of hotel establishments (hotels and hotel apartments) in Ajman reached 35 in the first quarter of 2015, compared to 30 in the same period in 2014.

two phases; the first on hotel establishments, while the second was on classifying resorts, travel agencies, restaurants and transportation. Results are now 35 classified hotels and hotel departments, 168 travel agencies and eight tourism restaurants. ATDD is always keen on supporting all tourism-related sectors and providing them with all needed services, including promotion in all ATDD participations in international exhibitions. It is noteworthy that the first stage of the classification project was named the Best Tourism Project in the Middle East and North Africa as part of MENA Travel Awards 2014, as well as the Best Government Project in Ajman. What measures are being taken by you for greater international awareness for destination Ajman? What steps being taken to ensure implementation? As for marketing and promotion, ATDD works on two axes; local and international. ATDD is eager to have presence in major events in the UAE and to hold many events, over the year, targeting UAE local citizens and residents. Regionally and Internationally, ATDD has a comprehensive plan regarding participation in main international tourism and travel exhibitions. Every year, ATDD approves one more destination, compared to the previous year, to its map of targeted markets abroad. This can be decided in accordance with the results of tourism statistics, now available on a quarter-basis. Is Ajman a comprehensive destination in terms of business and leisure? With the recent openings of the Fairmont and Ajman Saray, hotels were a step in the right direction. However, there was still more work to do. The corniche redevelopment makes a big difference and the new hotels change the destination, and we welcome them on board. The corniche would be connected to the Ajman Marina behind the Royal Court. This area would be very similar to The Walk in Dubai, lots of high-end franchises, restaurant chains and retail shops with three-storey buildings around the area. The Dh100 million marina will be the largest tourism project in the emirate. It will be a major factor to bring more people to the emirate and will boost tourism. Promoting Emirati culture and heritage, however, are key parts of the emirate’s tourism masterplan. Our main selling points vary from destination hotels to marinas and shopping centers, in addition to historic attractions which are all part of the changing landscape of Ajman.

Ajman also plans to invest Dh2.1 billion to build an international airport, with its first flight due in 2018. We are also working on a heritage village and we have got the initial approval from HH Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, for it to be developed behind Ajman Museum. Also, do not forget to include Al Zorah project, which is expected to strengthen Ajman’s tourism sector. Please throw some light on the upcoming attractions of Ajman as an emirate. Feasibility studies are underway for at least three new attractions, to be developed in Ajman. A top priority for ATDD in 2015 is the Ajman Tourism Investment Map. In Ajman, we have a good opportunity for any investor who is seriously intending to invest in Ajman. The Map was executed according to Vision 2021 targets. The project targets the development of a roadmap for tourism development in the emirate of Ajman in accordance with Ajman Vision 2021. It will present the current tourism scene in Ajman, focus on analyzing the current and future infrastructure needs and evaluate the expected effect of tourism on local economy. The four-phased project would result in a realistic map on the potentials and opportunities of tourism investment in Ajman in the coming five years. ATDD’s government strategic partners in this project are Ajman Land and Property Department, Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, Ajman Real-Estate Regulatory Agency (ARRA), Ajman Port and Customs, Ajman Free Zone Authority (AFZA), Ajman Chamber and Ajman Department of Economic Development. The project will include a survey on sectors of hospitality, entertainment, food and beverage, and transport in Ajman. ATDD cooperates with all concerned government and non-government authorities with the aim of coming out with realistic results that support current efforts for tourism development in the emirate. I think Ajman in the past few years has worked well on tourism. Many hotels are rising and operational today, especially from the Corniche side. How do you see the demand growing for the destination Ajman in existing as well as emerging markets? I will talk to you in the most appropriate language; numbers. In the first quarter of 2015, revenues were

If you were a tourist yourself on a first visit to Ajman, how would you have describe it and rate it? The emirate of Ajman offers a unique experience, combining the wonders of our history and archaeology with recreational, ecological and religious attractions for the whole family. Ancient archaeological sites showcase the heritage of the emirate while Ajman’s castles and forts, majestic mountains and spacious valleys provide a rich backdrop for the steady growth of the hospitality and entertainment sectors. We are proud to make a significant contribution to the global eminence of the United Arab Emirates. Ajman’s unique diversity, sustainable development and tourism initiatives combine to attract investment, create jobs, and raise the profile of the UAE. We at the Ajman Tourism Development Department believe that tourism is a means of supporting multicultural communication, which is why we strive to maximize all the treasures we have to offer our visitors. We have great confidence in the growth of our tourism sector. We seize every opportunity to raise the public profile of Ajman and to market it as one of the world’s best tourist destinations. Thus, we are pleased to invite you to Ajman. We welcome visitors from every corner of the world and are fully confident that you will enjoy a unique experience in our charming emirate. What does this city Ajman holds which one should not miss on his/her trip to UAE? Tranquility is a main component of Ajman community. Much of Ajman’s charm came from its reputation as a rustic emirate. People come up here to relax, away from the craziness of the city in Dubai. It is a quiet city with a very nice beach and there is a special place called Al Zorah. Visitors can watch flamingos and enjoy a mangrove forest there. There is also an upcoming project by Al Zorah Development Project Office. Ajman also has a cherished historical heritage. The Ajman Museum is located in a building where the ruling family of Ajman lived before the formation of the UAE and that place has a story. We also have two separate areas of Manama and Masfout. There are currently 35 hotels in Ajman, ranging from five to one star, and most of them are at the seaside. Seafront hotels offer daily shuttle-bus services to Dubai, and the buses are always full. For people who’ve not been here before, they like to see Dubai. They stay with us for a beach vacation, though, and can use the city as a base to get to the other emirates. Healthy Iftar at India Palace Chefs at India Palace have created a special Iftar buffet, that aids in digestion, prevents acidity, keeps the body hydrated and helps flush out impurities. “With people working during the day, we often host large groups of families and friends who enjoy our signature North Indian dishes at Iftar,” said Rohith Muralya, Director Concept Cuisines at India Palace. “We also give special attention to the breaking of a fast by encouraging guests to start slowly, easing back into regular foods to ensure that they don’t suffer from indigestion and stay hydrated.” Before guests start to dine on the array of main courses and accompaniments, India Palace will serve guests healthy food and beverage options including a selection of fruits including watermelon, orange, grapes, strawberries and apples. The team of chefs at India Palace recommend the following fruits based on their individual

health benefits: Watermelon: The fruit is mostly made up of water — about 92 per cent — and is loaded with vitamins A, B6 and C, nutrients, antioxidants and amino acids and potassium which helps hydrate the body effectively. Oranges: Offers hydration rating of 87 per cent. Oranges are sweet and packed with more than 100 per cent of the daily recommended value for vitamin C . Grapes: The health benefits of grapes include their ability to treat constipation, indigestion and fatigue. Grapes, one of the most popular and delicious fruits, are rich sources of vitamins A, C, B6 and folate in addition to essential minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium. Strawberries: These berries are rich in vitamin C, and in addition to its succulent flavour the fruit is known to clear the arteries and regulate blood sugar. Apples: Serve as an excellent source to taking in the dietary fibre the body needs and promotes colon health. Apples are also said to be rich in the water-soluble dietary fibre pectin that serves to jellify salts, sugars, and fat, nutrients that get started away as fat, serving as an active fat blocker. Guests will also be offered a selection of beverages made of lemon, mint, buttermilk, black salt and other healthy options as part of the buffet - below are a list of health benefits and properties the top beverages have to offer:

Mint: Fresh mint is recognised for its digestive properties. Butter milk: Creates a buffer layer to the stomach lining protecting one from stomach acidity. “When one fasts, the body slowly hydrates over the course of the day, so once our guests break their fast we want to serve them food and fruit that hydrates the body,” added Muralya. “For some, we know it can be difficult to eat a lot of eat a lot of fruits which is why we make juices to give our guests the additional water that the body needs.” An Iftar buffet specially crafted with healthy food and beverage options is available across seven India Palace outlets throughout the month of Ramadan. The daily buffet set up for Iftar – priced at AED 70 for adults and AED 40 for children - includes a rotation of finger-licking North Indian delicacies including mulligatawny soups, chicken tikka and kebab specialities, assorted Indian breads and more. Reviving a

Dying Art Helen McCook is not just passionate about needlework and embroidery but is determined to repopularise the art By Amit Kakkar

98 Curiosity July - August 2015

I have been extraordinarily blessed by family and friends who understand the importance of my commitment to my art and have supported my choices even when they did not necessarily agree or understand them. They have had faith that my hardwork, perseverance and dedication will enable me to have a fulfilled and interesting career.

Helen McCook

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am Helen McCook. I currently split my time between Dubai and Great Britain. I hold a BA (Hons) degree in Printed & Dyed Textiles with Art History (Non-European specialism), am a qualified teacher for post compulsory education and graduated from the historic hand embroidery apprenticeship at The Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace in 2003. How did it all start? I have been eternally curious since childhood and that excitement of discovering, exploring and understanding never abated. I suppose it is these qualities which lead me towards a career in art, after all, art is a mental and physical exploration of life and the world around us. Striving to create beauty is an age old quest and it is one which I felt committed to from a relatively young age. How did you enter into teaching? I love my subject and strongly feel that it must continue. I want people to be able to derive as much enjoyment from this amazing art form as I have and continue to do. I am often told that embroidery is a dying art. Without exception the person telling me this does not and has not stitched beyond school age and if you delve deeper, they have a host of horror stories to tell you about their experiences of textiles - mostly featuring some sturdy, bun wearing battle-axe bellowing like a Wagnerian valkyrie who is a stickler for unpicking and redoing hems. Their experience is no experience at all. If I am not prepared to educate people of all ages, then I cannot complain with the view that it is dying. To survive, a few people must still be involved, to thrive requires many more than that and that is my aim by teaching - to turn opinion around and to pass on the highest

quality of skills at all levels of learning, whether that be complete beginner or master classes. Education can also take many forms and sometimes one of the most important things that I can do is to demystify the secretive and often tangled thread of traditional artisan craftsmanship in a modern world. The aim to be accessible and to open the doors on what can sometimes seem like a very cloistered and private world. Sometimes it can be to encourage people to look at the world around them with a new, challenging, inquisitive eye, picking out details and engaging with their chosen subject and people in an active manner. To see with fresh eyes, a world they thought they knew.

What are your future plans? I will extend my personal and professional practice. I am currently exploring options in Dubai and hope to become involved in the creative scene here. I am also interested in arts education and cross cultural exchange in Dubai. There is such a rich tradition of textiles within the local community which I find very exciting and interesting but Dubai is also such an internationally robust place. The whole world seems to be represented here. What appears to be missing here is my personal brand of elegant, luxurious, one off pieces of textiles for fashion or interiors which take pride in a rich heritage, utilise the opulence of wonderful materials such as French or Japanese silks, British linens, golden threads or tweeds, and represent a the influence of the individual for whom they are made. I have made a career of the creation of legacy textiles and I’m not sure that I have seen a society quite as ambitious to create a lasting legacy to reflect their achievements as I have in Dubai. I’m the woman to help them do so with taste and just the right level of opulence and grandeur. Why art as a field? We are educated to doubt our opinion, to feel that we require an expert to tell us what we think. In reality, although art may be judged on composition and context, the deeper meaning and relevance

Generally the trend is that arts and crafts are being less supported and embedded within the curriculum in schools, even though it promotes a whole host of transferable and desirable skills, creative thinking and improved spatial awareness being just two examples. Sometimes it can be something as seemingly simple as teaching people that they have choices and facilitating their feeling of enablement to take control and be informed. And that is what makes art and education so important, informative, relevant and fundamental, not only for the future of my subject but also for our general development. How supportive has your family been about your decision? July - August 2015 Curiosity 99

art & soul can be assessed by academics, the quality of the brushwork and techniques employed put under intense scrutiny and digested by the art world at large… what is real and true, the honest sign of success is very simple and cannot be faked… does it speak to you? Does it illicit a response? How does it make you feel? The process of creating for me, can only be likened to wandering across a new and ever changing landscape. Sometimes you will find yourself in conditions that seem familiar and you are equipped to work with ease and at other times the terrain is difficult and overpowering, leaving you to work through confusion to find resolution. I stumbled across a piece of poetry the other day which comes close to verbally describing the relationship which I personally have with art. It is called ‘Where the mind is without fear’ by Rabindranath Tagore. ‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls Where words come out from the depth of truth Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever widening thought and action into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my

country awake’. I think to be an artist you have to be an eternal optimist, quite apart from anything else, because if you were a realist, you would most certainly not have chosen art as a career! For embroiderers particularly, there is no quick fix. There are only hours of painstaking work, tight deadlines and the constant quest of striving for perfection in each item which you produce for a client, but even more so, perfection for the decoration and relief of your soul. The relaxed and happy motion of expelling a deep breath of contentment before turning to face another challenge. We constantly tilt at perceived aesthetic windmills. Whilst it is true to say that there is no need for embroidery, we will not be naked or cold without it, but it is this form of embellishment that beautifies. It should be by turns, tactile, impressive, familiar and yet special. It can, and should, add what every single person on this revolving orb is striving for – beauty in its simplest form. Beauty for beauty’s sake. A sanctuary for the senses in a world which dulls them. It is these qualities exactly which has created our enduring love affair with embellishment and embroidery and where we feel passion, we often feel pride. It is this pride and sense of achievement that keeps us involved with embroidery. The never ending challenges that rise up to meet you and the feeling that you will never stop learning.

100 Curiosity July - August 2015

I had a conversation with a friend about the difference between knowledge and understanding and in terms or embroidery, knowing the bare bones of the technique does not mean that you have grasped all of the opportunities which it can offer, only extensive practise, experimentation, and application can provide an insight into this. That and the generosity of the spirit of shared learning and universal truths. Everywhere you could go in the world, you will

I think to be an artist you have to be an eternal optimist, quite apart from anything else see embroidery of one form or another and even if there are barriers of language or culture, it could be argued that it is a universal language, as the barrier of mother tongue bears no restriction upon the demonstration and passing /sharing of information. There is also a bare honesty in embroidery, it can not be more or less than it is. Anais Nin said ‘Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage’. It is the same with all art and experience. If you aren’t prepared to take the gamble, to experiment and risk getting it wrong, you will never

It is the balance of interests which keep the person in harmony with themselves and their work experience the happy accident and nothing new will develop. This gamble is essentially the basis for all development. So the mantra that I’ve come to believe in is very simply this, don’t let people with small minds convince you that your dreams are too big. You never know what you can achieve and will learn along the way. I certainly never expected to be here this time two years ago and who knows where I will have been and what I will be working on next year… All I know is that I will be thinking, designing, stitching, learning, teaching and extending the conversation. Any major awards you would like to mention which you received. Awards aren’t really given in my field but I have worked on some amazing projects. A very small selection include: • Was part of the team of embroiderers who created the embellishments for the wedding dress, shoes and veil for the wedding of Katherine Middleton to Prince William.

• Selected to be the first artist in residence for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. • Was commissioned to create wall hangings for Hampton Court Palace • Published author - commissioned to write the Royal School of Needlework Essential Guide to Goldwork. Sold worldwide and now translated into the French language. • Pieces of work in private collections and galleries worldwide including items now in the British Royal Collection. • Commissioned to create an aesthetically sympathetic piece of embroidered textiles to complete a piece of furniture designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh utilising the original watercolour, thus completing the furniture as per his vision for the first time. Owned by private clients. • Have just been commissioned to create a piece of artwork to feature in an upcoming exhibition (2018) in Scotland which will then go into the collections at Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. • Embroidered two sets of large leather wall panels for Gordon Ramsey restaurant in London. • Produce embroidery/embellishment on costume for West End (London), Broadway (New York) Australian and German theatre productions.

• Curated and presented a permanent exhibition of antique textiles for Sudeley Castle (Gloucestershire). Wrote and presented an information video loop film which is played to visitors to the Sudeley Castle textile exhibition on permanent view. • Demonstrated at The Victoria & Albert Museum (London) as part of their Golden Age of Couture educational evening, amongst many other world renowned galleries • Helped to design and worked on the Kate Moss dress for the Swarovski Fashion Rocks Concert, funded by Topshop and later auctioned to raise money for The Princes Trust. • Images of garments displaying my work for fashion companies have been used in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle Collections and Hello Magazine. Being a multi-talented person how are you able to strike a balance? It is the balance of interests which keep the person in harmony with themselves and their work. Each different aspect and interest feeds into the other and adds enhanced richness to the mix. Equally, in terms of time spent making versus times spent teaching, lecturing, exhibiting, consulting or lecturing, they are two faces of the same coin. One is solitary, inward facing and contemplative and the other is the polar opposite, sharing information, outward facing and extending networks or creating communities. One cannot healthily exist without the other. July - August 2015 Curiosity 101

DUBAI LEADS MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA HOTEL CONSTRUCTION WITH OVER 100,000 ROOMS FORECAST FOR 2020

A

n exclusive new report published by TOPHOTELPROJECTS for The Hotel Show Dubai 2015 reveals that Dubai is leading the Middle East and Africa for new hotel developments with 96 total projects and 36,523 rooms in the pipeline. Dubai has been the Middle East and Africa’s leading city for hotel openings for the past 3 years, but activity is now at an all-time high with the new rooms to be added to the existing 65,000 reported by JLL as currently available in 2015, set to bring the total to over 100,000 by 2020. Christine Davidson, Event Director of The Hotel Show Dubai, the largest event for the hospitality industry in the region said: “With TOPHOTELPROJECTS reporting a record total of 694 hotel projects currently underway in the Middle East and Africa, set to add 188,817 rooms to the market over the coming years, the majority before 2020, this is an exciting time for our industry and market.” The busiest year for Dubai hotels is reported to be 2017, with 30 projects opening to the public. Dubai’s first fully solar-powered hotel, Hotel Indigo Dubai The Sustainable City, and its first Mandarin Oriental and Bulgari luxury hotels are to open in 2017. The major Dubai Pearl development, a “mix of six innovative 5-Star hotels” is reported to launch in early-2018 including Dubai’s first MGM Grand and Bellagio hotels, brands made famous by the Las Vegas strip. Other hot spots are Morocco with 46 active projects, Riyadh with 43 and Doha with 38, following closely behind Dubai. Of almost 700 total hotel projects in the pipeline for the Middle East and Africa, 528 are listed as being in the pre-

planning, planning and construction stages, with local and international investors now requiring the materials to build across technology and security, interiors, food services and more. “Hotel and leisure development, build and investment is significant and set to continue, making Dubai the perfect contract market for global suppliers and investors,” Davidson continued. “This year, The Hotel Show Dubai has seen the level of interest reflect directly on the exhibition floor with 1000s of brands joining us from over 45 countries. With larger pavilions from Turkey, Portugal and China in The International Village for 2015 and a host of new brands on board, we know that The Hotel Show Dubai is providing the largest procurement opportunity in the region. For international hotel operators and restaurant owners, 28-30th September 2015 should already be in the diary for The Hotel Show and The Leisure Show at the Dubai World Trade Centre.” The Hotel Show’s Vision Conference will return for 2015 welcoming over 80 speakers from across the globe sharing expertise and insight with hundreds of delegates. New forums include the Design Theatre, with leading architects and interior designers sharing latest trends and ideas. While a new Technology Summit, TecSec, provides 3 days of technology specific sessions for IT Directors, owners, decision-makers, consultants and trainees. The Hotel Show Dubai is organised by dmg events and belong to the dmg hospitality portfolio comprising of The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia, The Hotel Show Dubai, The Vision Conference, The Leisure Show, The Middle East Hotel Awards, and The Middle East Pool & Spa Awards.

THE LEISURE SHOW : Christine Davidson, Event Director, dmg events hospitality portfolio said: “We are very excited about The Leisure Show, what it represents and how it is growing with the market. There was a vital need for a forum for the leisure sector as Dubai sets to become the world’s biggest tourism hub. With 70 million people going through Dubai airport last year the government has ambitious plans to ensure they have the very best hotels to stay in and a wealth of options for entertainment and leisure time. The development pipeline is strong with up to 20 new theme parks and a multitude of spa, pool and sports facilities currently in plan, under construction and, or being refurbished. But of course whilst Dubai is a major hub and a great blue print for success it’s not all about Dubai – The Leisure Show serves all of the seven emirates where there are pockets of significant sports and leisure development. Within the Middle East at large Qatar is racing to prepare for the FIFA World Cup and to welcome and entertain millions of fans and Africa’s development and refurbishment of leisure facilities continues at pace. Add to this the 694 hotel projects in the pipeline across the Middle East and Africa and that’s a lot of outdoor terraces, pools, spas, sports and fitness needing to be fit out and equipped and also supports the very reason why we host The Leisure Show next to The Hotel Show – the largest hospitality event in the Middle East and Africa. Over 700 exhibitors and 18000 attendees will be in Dubai in September 2015 and we can’t wait to see them here. Last year we saw exhibitors and visitors from around the globe at The Leisure Show – for anyone in this industry Dubai is definitely the place to come to see the future of leisure.” July - August 2015 Curiosity 103

Ritu Kumar Dressing Up the Rich & Famous

As a fashion designer Ritu Kumar needs no introduction. She has dressed the biggest Bollywood stars, the most famous celebrities and the most stylish royals including the late Princess Diana. Curiosit y Middle East talks to the Queen of Indian fashion industry who is credited for the revival of traditional Indian fabrics and crafts.

104 Curiosity July - August 2015

= Ritu Kumar is one of India’s foremost designers, who has developed a unique style of her own, reflecting the ancient traditions of Indian craftsmanship in a contemporary vocabulary. With a background in an art history and museology, which has enriched her horizons, Ritu’s understanding of ancient designs and the innovative use of traditional crafts has created a new classicism. Ritu Kumar holds the status of a revivalist in the Indian fashion industry, who has successfully bridged the gap between traditionalism and modernity. However, her work today has gone much beyond revival – It is constantly evolving within an aesthetic which is sophisticated both in the eastern and western sense, with each of her collections making a contemporary statement in a fast changing modern India. Ritu, who began her work with four hand-block printers and two tables, in a small village near Calcutta was the first woman to introduce the ‘boutique’ culture in India under the brand name ‘Ritu’. Today she has outlets in all major cities in India. Ritu’s boutiques feature a multifaceted showcase encompassing the very best of Indian design, with specially produced range of high fashion garments and accessories using silk, leather and cotton. Ritu’s range of western and Indian apparel is all about traditions and individual talent, and women across the continents can easily identify with her vision of design.

Imran Khan & Jemima Goldsmith with Late Princess Diana

You're credited with being the first fashion designer to bring the 'boutique' concept to India? How did it come about? By accident, but it is true there were no boutiques or any retail premises before I started the trend at the time in India. It all started when I returned to India from America, with a desire to learn more about our country and its heritage. I took up a course dealing with histology which provided me exposure to museology and this became the genesis of my interest in the various craft forms. As I progressed, I got introduced to hand block printing and eventually started interacting with a cross-section of artisans across Kolkata. There was undocumented repertoire of knowledge and skills and this was the foundation of my continued association with Indian designs and hand-woven textiles. A commitment to the ethos of work and also a commitment to the crafts of the country. It was difficult but if there is focus and confidence in the heritage we possess it becomes simpler to achieve. Your designs span different generations - how have you made traditional Indian textiles, designs and silhouettes appeal to buyers in a global market? I think it has to do with understanding the classical nature of Indian textiles which have had their initial base in this country and making them suitable to the ever changing

needs of modern women, in their usage. I try to ensure that the aesthetics are retained in the modernising of the garment for the international and Indian context. The Indian fashion industry has undergone a sea of change since I started out. The weddings have become much more flamboyant giving the room to designers to make one-of-a-kind bridal outfits as well as also to have a ready to wear bridal line, which is the need of the hour. That are royal and regal in every way possible. Simultaneously, with several international brands entering the market and younger India becoming more fashion conscious, there is a demand for contemporary stylized Western wear from Indian designers too.

International & National talent brings a freshness of perspective and makes the collection more multi-dimensional.

How is the Label brand pushing boundaries internationally? Yes I would hope that it is breaking fresh ground and forging an identity which is both Indian and Cosmopolitan in the high street space. We observed that the Indian consumer was changing and there was a need to add on a contemporary collection to take the legacy of the brand forward. There was a growing segment of young, independent woman who were looking for designer wear with a Western touch. My son Amrish actually came up with the concept of Label so it was a natural decision for him to head it. He has a firm understanding of the styles and color tones the younger generation wants and expressed a keen interest in leading the design efforts. He's been heading Label since its inception and he is completely involved in the design process right from fabric selection to color palettes to the prints and embroidery to the style of the garment and so forth. We are still growing as a brand, so there are no landmarks to pinpoint as such. There are high points every day, and many milestones to come ahead which we are focusing on. How does allying with designers work practically? The Indian fashion industry has undergone a sea of change since I started out 45 years ago. Weddings these days are much more flamboyant than those of yesteryear which gives room to designers today to make one-of-a-kind bridal 106 Curiosity July - August 2015

outfits. At the same time, there is a need for readyto-wear bridal lines that are royal and regal in every way possible as every modern bride wants to wear the very best on her special day. In today’s day and age, a new India is dictating its fashion preferences and celebrating a freedom of choice and budget. The modern bride’s wardrobe has expanded to encompass traditional saris, cocktail saris, a bridal lehenga, suits ranging from traditional salwar-kameez to fancy anarkalis and finally a number of contemporary Western outfits for day-to-day wear. The trend of wearing contemporary and more stylized bridal outfits has caught on in a fairly big manner. While it is great to follow the new fashion trends cropping up, there are many things to be kept in mind when choosing a more fashionable style over the traditional products as so much can go wrong if attention to the finer details is missing. International and national talent brings a freshness of perspective and makes the collection

more multi-dimensional. Tell our readers about your new summer collection at Burjuman Centre in Dubai. Catering to the contemporary women of today, the collection comprises of varied styles for day wear and evening, ranging from kurtis, skirts and suits. The fabrics used are jersey, crepe, cotton georgette, cotton voils, etc.The unique blend of signature Ritu Kumar prints with subtle detailing and sinewy silhouettes result in an array of beautiful creations. The collection brings impeccably designed traditional wear that ensues the style of the young contemporary women looking for comfortable yet chic designs. With a variety of dresses, tops, tunics in summery hues such as turquoise, navy blue, off white, yellow, rust and the intricate use of lace, nets and embellishments, the collection has drawn inspiration from Indian prints and techniques. The range includes well-tailored designs with

smart accents and print combinations. From embellished evening dresses, day dresses, jumpsuits, tailored jackets, tunics and shirts in a lively palette of blue, teal, red, beige and off-white, the range highlights Label's love for prints translated onto contemporary silhouettes. What do you like in your wardrobe? Kurtas, jeans , chooridaars , palazzo pants and tunics, also the sari always. You've received countless industry accolades over the years, which of them meant the most to you and why? The Padma Shri of course. It came in as pleasant surprise. It wasn't something that I was expecting, I am deeply appreciative by the fact that the government has recognized my efforts in the field of fashion, textile and craftsmanship. It is Indian fashions USP and one which is not alive in any other part of the globe particularly practised by the number of people and craftsmen who are involved in the textile traditions of this country. We need to keep it going with as much Indian talent as we can get. This is going to be the critical part of keeping an Indian fashion element alive. Who would you like to dress that you haven't yet? The modern Indian corporate forward looking woman of today. No one in particular as they are all stars in their own rights. Yes, Kangana once again would be fun to dress. Did you personally meet with the late Princess Diana to design the pieces of yours that she wore? No unfortunately she cycled to the store in London at South Audley Street, and ordered the outfit she wore on her visit to Pakistan. I did speak to her on the phone but did not meet her. She was going to a temple and I was designing a sari for the event but she had an accident before that - a real pity.

The legend of

Marilyn Monroe Hundreds of books have been written about Marilyn Monroe, who died in 1962 at the age of thirty-six. She continues to be one of Hollywood's most enduring icons. Here's a selection of some best-sellers

The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe By J Randy Taraborrelli

In this groundbreaking book, Taraborrelli draws complex and sympathetic portraits of the women so influential in the actress' life, including her mother, her foster mother, and her legal guardian. He also reveals, for the first time, the shocking scope of Marilyn's own mental illness, the identity of Marilyn's father and the half-brother she never knew, and new information about her relationship with the Kennedy's-Bobby, Jack, and Pat Kennedy Lawford.

Marilyn: The Passion and the Paradox By Lois Banner Like her art, Marilyn Monroe was rooted in paradox: She was a powerful star and a childlike waif; a joyful, irreverent party girl with a deeply spiritual side; a superb friend and a narcissist; a dumb blonde and an intellectual. No previous biographer has recognized—much less attempted to analyze—most of these aspects of her personality. Lois Banner has. 110 Curiosity July - August 2015

My Story By Marilyn Monroe Written at the height of her fame but not published until over a decade after her death, this autobiography of actress Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) poignantly recounts her childhood as an unwanted orphan, her early adolescence, her rise in the film industry from bit player to celebrity, and her marriage to Joe DiMaggio.

Blonde

By Joyce Carol Oates One of America’s most acclaimed novelists boldly re-imagines one of America’s most enduring icons in Blonde—the National Book Awardnominated bestseller by Joyce Carol Oates. Marilyn Monroe lives— reborn to tell her untold history; her story of a star created to shine brightest in the Hollywood firmament before her fall to earth.

Music for Chameleons By Truman Capote

Mari l yn Monroe By Barbara Leamning Barbara Leaming's Marilyn Monroe is a complex, sympathetic portrait that will forever change the way we view the most enduring icon of America. To those who think they have heard all there is to hear about Marilyn Monroe, think again. Leaming's book tells a brand-new tale.

In these gems of reportage Truman Capote takes true stories and real people and renders them with the stylistic brio we expect from great fiction. Here we encounter an exquisitely preserved Creole aristocrat, an enigmatic killer, and a proper Connecticut householder with a ruinous obsession. And we meet Capote himself, who, whether he is smoking with his cleaning lady or trading gossip with Marilyn Monroe, remains one of the most elegant, malicious, yet compassionate writers to train his eye on the social fauna of his time.

abbits are playful, friendly and loving, and pretty easy to take care of. Cute, furry and snuggly there are many varieties of domestic rabbits. Some of them are a sandy brown colour like a wild rabbit, some are white, some have splotches in distinctive patterns (the popular Dutch rabbit is one of these), and some even have Himalayan points like a Siamese cat. In addition to the many coat patterns, there are also several sizes to choose from. For example, dwarf lops and mini lops are very popular, and they are small: The mini doesn’t get bigger than 1.6kg (3.5lb), and the dwarf only gets to 2.5kg (5lb). These are the rabbits whose ears are very long and droop down to the ground. Many people, when they think of pet rabbits, are thinking of lops. By contrast, the Flemish giant is well-named. Often topping 6kg (14lbs), this rabbit is larger than most pet cats and many kinds of dog (up to and including some spaniels). Unlike the lops, Flemish giants have ears that stand upright. A little bigger than a dwarf lop and much smaller than a Flemish giant, the “rex weighs in at approximately 3kg (6.5lb) and is noted for its curly fur.

The Royal Spa At Corinthia Hotel Budapest

116 Curiosity July - August 2015

n a city renowned for its health-restoring thermal waters, the Corinthia Hotel wouldn’t be complete without its own spa. The hotel’s spa, first opened in 1886, is yet another landmark within this impressive building, and at 1,000m², it is also one of Budapest’s most extensive spas. The Royal Spa has undergone extensive restoration to bring it back to its former glory and is today a place to feel pampered in. It has all the facilities of a contemporary spa and more, including a 15m pool, jetted spas, 12 massage rooms, and a range of hot tubs and relaxation beds. Caring and professionally trained health and beauty therapists provide a full complement of treatments. Fittingly for the city’s premier luxury hotel, our Royal Spa is quite simply one of the premier pampering facilities in the whole of Europe. While the crowning centrepiece of this elegant Art Deco building is the recentlyrefurbished 15-metre pool, originally opened in 1886, our extensive menu of 21st century treatments includes a range of luxury therapeutic body, face and massage treatments. Our spacious 1,000 m² facility also boasts a dedicated fitness room, saunas, steam bath and jacuzzi, together with various relaxation areas. Using the most effective ingredients and techniques from around the world, ESPA treatments combine the purest levels of the most potent natural ingredients with the latest age-defying technology. The History of the Royal Spa The spa was planned and built by the architect Vilmos Freund in 1886-88. At that time it contained steam baths, wave and shower baths, electric baths, pneumatic chamber and a medical room with cold water. Contemporary journalists were fascinated by the spa’s appearance. In 1903 direct access was created for hotel guests. After the First World War, Freund was declared bankrupt and his heirs sold the spa in 1923 to the Royal Nagyszálló Rt. The spa operated until 1944 but from that time it has been closed. The abandoned, obsolete spa was rediscovered in 1983 and, according to the original documents, there were plans to use the spa area for parking facilities. Thankfully, János Dianóczki, who was in charge of planning the multi-storey car park, turned down the proposal. The media and the public supported him and his decision made it possible for the current owners to restore the spa today.

which uses hair grafts from one’s own scalp and implants them within your thinning eyebrows and eyelashes. The hair grafts chosen for the procedure usually have a very fine texture and curvature of your original brows and lashes,” explains Ms Vrabac. Anisa Vrabac Head of Hair Transplant Department

I

f you think you know everything about cosmetic surgery, wait until you hear about the latest “window dressing” for the eyes, which is now available at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery clinic known as Eyebrow and Eyelash transplant, this latest trend is gaining a very large following, what with thicker and fuller eyebrows, and long eyelashes in vogue at the moment, and exhibited by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara, Keira Knightley and Lily Collins. According to Anisa Vrabac, the Head of Hair Transplant Department at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery, Eyebrow/eyelash transplant procedures at the clinic use the latest technique of Hair Transplant – Stem Cell FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplant technique. “Eyebrow/ Eyelash transplant is a very meticulous process,

122 Curiosity July - August 2015

Depending on the amount of hair loss one has suffered on their eyebrows and eyelashes, states Ms Vrabac, this creates a basis on the number of follicles to be harvested and used. “Sometimes it can be as little as 200 hair grafts for the eyelashes, while at other times it can be as high as 600 hair grafts for the eyebrows.” The harvested and implanted hair grows into permanent and healthy hair follicles, which end up as natural, flawless and full eyebrows and eyelashes. Stem Cell FUE hair transplant technique is used for eyebrow and eyelashes restoration because it is ideal for volume restoration, is minimally invasive and allows for faster healing for the donor area as well as the recipient area. “This is because of the micro harvesting from the donor site, and implantation right next to the original hair, hence appearing very natural with high density,” states Vrabac. “Results after eyebrows and eyelashes

restoration through Stem cell FUE method of hair transplantation is permanent and completely natural, not to mention one can return to his/her normal duties the following day after the procedure.” Eyebrows and eyelash transplant relies on this technique to ensure zero failure rates, meaning that 100% of the implanted micro grafts are guaranteed to grow. This happens due to direct implantation of the harvested grafts. “In addition, healing takes between 3 to 7 days in both the donor site (back of your scalp) and recipient areas (either eyebrows or eyelashes), while 30% to 50% of the donor area will re-grow within 3 – 6 months,” notes Ms Vrabac. Candidates for eyebrow/eyelash transplants include those who have thinning eyebrows/ eyelashes due to over plucking, traction alopecia caused by overuse of fake lashes, accidents, burns, hereditary factors, chemotherapy, radiation and Trichotillomania (pulling out hair). Since your new eyelashes or eyebrows have come from your head, they might grow longer than required, which means you might need to trim and curl them often. Also, after the restoration procedure and you have your new eyebrows or eyelashes, it is ok to color them if your wish, cut or shape them. “This is because they are now as natural as your previous brow and lashes.”

The skin is the most vulnerable organ in the human body: being exposed to everything from aging and inner health, to pollution and the use of chemicals and products. Exposure to UV rays in sunlight causes age spots – which in turn lead to wrinkles and loose skin, and over the years, it all ends up in skin damage. Age will no longer defeat your beauty, now with Kaya Skin Clinic giving you a way to stay Forever Young. Forever Young is no longer just an aspiration, but a reality thanks to Kaya Skin Clinic.

The dermatologists at Kaya have lots of experience in offering such solutions, a safe and convenient way to reduce the signs of ageing under expert supervision. All the age-control solutions available at Kaya Skin Clinic are US FDA-approved and completely safe.

If you’re young at heart, you should not let your skin give away your age! Ageing maybe an inevitable process: but looking good and retaining your youthfulness is not out of your hand once age sets in. Dr. Marian Coutinho, Dermatologist at Kaya Skin Clinic, explained: “Physiological ageing is natural and it is a slow irreversible process responsible for wrinkles, sagging, thinning and roughness of the skin. At Kaya, we constantly innovate to offer the latest technology in skin treatment. The Kaya Face Lift is one such holistic treatment which uses threads to lift the skin and painlessly fights sagging skin with precision.” At Kaya Skin Clinic, the range of options available

The services on offer at all of Kaya’s clinics start with a check-up. Expert dermatologists analyse the customer’s skin, evaluate it and then recommend a service most appropriate for the particular skin type’s needs. These services could range from preventive to curative, and are comprehensive age-control solutions. Another service at Kaya is the Skin Tightening service, the Fractional Skin Rejuvenation, Skin Polishing Photo Facial and the Kaya Age Control Peel.

Another minimally invasive cosmetic enhancement technique that works wonders in firming and lifting skin, is Kaya Face Lift using Micro Threads. A simple procedure that offers an immediate tangible lifting effect. Painless and safe, the therapy requires no downtime, and can be done under local anesthesia. The solutions we have on offer at Kaya Skin Clinic are very simple procedures. They do not need any downtime – unlike other plastic surgeries. The processes do not involve pain more than that of a pin prick, and within two or three days, the effects of the treatments can be seen. Some of the services are so quick that they can be done over lunch. After achieving satisfactory and long lasting anti aging results, we recommend a variety of Kaya homecare products to maintain prolonged effects. A wide range of anti aging homecare products using natural and effective ingredients are recommended after treatments, such as antioxidant Vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid serum, firm and lift etc. The use of such products helps to protect your skin from the extrinsic damaging effects, rejuvenate and renew the skin. Furthermore, they reduce age spots and enhance collagen production. Extending the value of staying Forever Young, Kaya also has a fun and interactive application on Facebook where women can complement their forever young Idol with a message and a postcard. When you enter Kaya Skin Clinic to use any of these solutions, you come to live the reality that age is indeed just a number. You can look as young as you truly are at heart. edeor 24x7 Hospital, Dubai introduces a Health Majlis for the First Time in the UAE Medeor 24x7 Hospital, Dubai brings you the Medeor Ramadan Health Majlis to keep a watch on your health while you fast. The concept of a Ramadan Majlis in the UAE is not new, with tents a common sight across the country. But for the first time in UAE, a Health Majlis is being done by a Hospital.

Month of Ramadan can have many health benefits. The Health Majlis seeks to promote these benefits which include fasting allows our digestive system to rest and detoxifies the body while promoting greater mental clarity. It also leads to increased energy levels and the heightened spirituality during the Holy Month results in tranquility of the heart and mind.”

“The Prophet (PBUH) said, “When the month of Ramadan arrives, the doors of mercy are opened”. This is reflected in the culture and traditions of the UAE. The Medeor Ramadan Health Majlis aims to enhance the healthy living habits of people. Keeping in line with these customs in the spirit of Ramadan, we decided to contribute to the community through a health Majlis. Most people will not avail of these simple check-ups which can help detect a more serious health problem due to financial constraints and lack of time. We hope through the Health Majlis people will focus on improving their health,” said Dr. Shajir Gaffar, CEO of VPS Healthcare for Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

Located at the front of the Medeor 24x7 Hospital, Dubai, the Ramadan Health Majlis is operational from 19th of June till the end of Ramadan from 10am to 10pm. Venice, Bali and Africa offer Great Value for ‘Active Escapes’ from the UAE

ew research by Travelex uncovers a range of alternative active holidays for those wanting something different to the traditional spa holidays and health retreats. The research reveals Venice, Bali and Africa are likely to become popular travel destinations for travellers seeking an active holiday, thanks to the alternative fitness activities they offer and the current strength of the UAE dirham in these destinations. Working with fitness blogger Faya Nilsson from Fitness on Toast, Travelex has compiled a list of locations, activities and associated costs for those wanting an alternative health escape.

Venice - Yoga and Culture the Dream Duo In Venice, rooftop yoga workshops are run all year round, high above the bustle of the canals. unforgettable experience. It's not one for the faint-hearted!

Improve your balance and coordination and get a great full body workout with something out of the ordinary: trapeze training located on a dreamlike island.

HIIT (high intensity interval training) is the perfect way to prepare for a challenge like this. Elevating the heart rate through intense activity, followed by brief active recoveries, followed by elevating the heart rate again, forces the cardiovascular system to handle the stress of limited oxygen.

Faya advises spending some extra time working on your back and shoulders – pull-ups are a great exercise to strengthen the back using your own body weight. Weighted dips will also improve your deltoid/ tricep strength, required to lever yourself around when flying through the air.

Morocco - Hiking through the Atlas Mountains

Elvin Eldić from Travelex comments: “It could be argued the growing popularity in active holidays has in turn created healthy competition, meaning not all fitness getaways need to cost an arm and a leg. There are so many great locations to go where your money will stretch further than you think.”

The Atlas Mountains are both picturesque and bursting with Moroccan culture. Hike through the epic scenery whilst burning an impressive 550 calories an hour. Faya recommends lunges as a great way to strengthen leg muscles, which receive the most strain during hiking.

Faya Nilsson from Fitness on Toast comments: “It’s great people are prioritising health in their spare time. There are so many exotic destinations you can jet off to, there’s really no excuse not to make 2015 your fittest year yet.”

2015: UAE Year of Innovation

“We cannot predict the future, we can only create it. Innovation is crucial part of the future and it helps us to stay ahead of the competition.

Kai Schukowski Hotel Manager, Kempinski Ajman 130 Curiosity July - August 2015

W

ith an ever-increasing trend and need for innovations in the hospitality industry, Kai Schukowski reveals the new technologies and ideas implemented and successfully used at Kempinski Hotel Ajman, the most established hotel in the smallest of the seven Emirates in Ajman.

Product QR Codes – “Since the natural white-sand beach is our greatest asset, food orders can be placed without even standing up from the sun bed on the beach or dialling the number of room service, due to the latest implementation – QR codes – which makes holidays go from easy to super relaxed,” said the hotel manager, Mr. Kai Schukowski. “The pyramids with QR codes are placed in the guests’ rooms, so they can scan the code with their smart phone or tablet, which automatically opens up the food menu, and they can place the order with a few simple clicks. All of the ten food & beverage outlets’ menus are available in four different languages: English, German, Arabic and Russian,” explained Mr Schukowski. “One of the reasons why we chose this technology is to have the freedom of convenience for our ‘smart guests’, who are inclined to technology. It eases ordering and provides the freedom of convenience when the guest doesn’t have to rely on someone to place his or her order. It makes everything simple,” added Mr Schukowski. Sun Panels on the Roof – In 2012, Kempinski

Hotel Ajman became one of the five-star hotels to successfully branch out into green energy by unveiling their first renewable installation –solar panels on the rooftop. “We operate a solar-thermal application that heats 30,000 litres of water every day, saving more than Dh 100,000 a month. The cost of heating the water has been reduced by two thirds and we are expecting to save about Dh 2.4 million during the lifetime of the solar installation,” explained Mr Schukowski.

She will be easily recognised by the guests with her red dress, European elegance and charming smile. “In a way, she is the extension of myself at the lobby – always there for our guests,” said Mr. Schukowski.

“To get on the real Hollywood glow, Kempinski Hotel Ajman has also implemented an innovative facial treatment at Kempinski The Spa. It is very popular among celebrities such as Beyonce, Eva Mendes and George Clooney, better known as the Hydrafacial MD, originated in the United States. Kempinski The Spa is the first place in the Northern Emirates to launch it, which truly makes us special.”

with two feet on the ground, we recognise that we are hoteliers, not innovators. The hotel industry is a step behind on the newest technologies, and the reason is mainly that we don’t have a specific department for this. If there were specific departments dedicated to innovations in each hotel, we would become a Silicon Valley. But as Kempinski believes, in order to improve, we have to work with people who are innovation experts. Therefore, we will partner with their respective industries, learn from them and adapt as a company. The insights that we learn will take us to the next level. If there are no changes going forward, you are simply moving backwards.

In the beginning of 2015, one of our waiters from the Indian restaurant Bukhara came up with an idea that turned out to be an excellent concept and a very successful event. We organised an authentic Kite Festival, which was the first of its kind in the Northern Emirates. For such events, we use Linea speakers that push the sound in one direction. Dubai Ranked Fourth Most Popular Destination in the World: MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index

E

mirate projected to attract 14.3 million international visitors in 2015, making it the highest ranked city in this category

Dubai continues to climb the ranks as one of the top destinations for international travellers according to the latest findings of the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Dubai has consistently advanced its position since the launch of the Index, ranking eighth in 2012, seventh in 2013, fifth last year and fourth this year. London topped the list in 2015, followed by Bangkok and Paris. “Since the inception of the Global Destination Cities Index in 2009, Dubai has continued to climb the ranks as an international travel destination for both business and leisure purposes,” said Eyad Al Kourdi, Country Manager - UAE, MasterCard. “The future ranking of the Emirate looks very promising. As Dubai gears towards Expo 2020, we’re excited to see the opportunities that will unfold to reinforce its position as a key economic driver.” Driven by insights into travel patterns, the Global Destination Cities Index provides a ranking of the 132 most visited cities around the world. More than just a travel tracker, the Index delivers deeper understanding of how people move around the world and speaks to the importance and prominence of the world’s cities as homes, destinations and engines of growth. According to the study, Dubai is expected to receive almost 14.3 million international visitors

in 2015, an increase of 8 per cent since 2014. When looking at the number of international overnight visitors that destination cities attract per city resident, Dubai is the world champion with 5.7 visitors per resident (an increase by 0.8 from 2014). With that in mind, it is no surprise that the city generates more international overnight visitor expenditure per resident than any other city (estimated at $4,668). “We continue to see international visitors and their spending play an increasingly critical role in boosting economic dynamism in destination cities around the world,” explains Dr. Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, global economic advisor to MasterCard. “The global economic recovery remains tentative and uneven, and demand for exports continues to be weak. In this context, stronger growth in international visitors and spending can make a significant contribution to income and employment generation for the destination cities.” Dubai was also ranked as the third air hub in the world by international connectivity and is the only city from the Middle East and Africa (MEA) on the top ten air hubs list.

Intellectual Insights: Understanding What Drives Global Cities

In 2015, it is expected that nearly 383 million overnight trips will be made by international visitors between the Index’s 132 cities, representing a massive demand for goods, services and experiences as they spend a total of US$360 billion during their visits.

According to the UN report on World Urbanization Prospects, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050. By forecasting the number of international overnight travellers, the Global Destination Cities Index shows the infrastructure needed to meet the expectations of both locals and visitors. Businesses and governments can use the insights from the study to identify those areas – from transit to cultural experiences to infrastructure – in which investment is needed for continued growth, innovation and sustainability. Other notable findings include: • The top five origin cities for Dubai are Doha, London, Kuwait, Muscat, and Jeddah. • Dubai is fifth in resilience, with 17 feeder cities accounting for 50 per cent of its international visitors. The more feeder cities that account for 50 per cent of a city’s international visitors, the more diversified the source of international visitors a destination city has, and with everything else being equal, the more resilient it becomes. • In MEA, Dubai continues to retain its top rank for international overnight visitors. Other top cities in the region include Johannesburg (4.4 million), Riyadh (4.27 million), Abu Dhabi (2.7 million) and Cape Town (1.96 million). • At 20.4 per cent, Abu Dhabi continues to register the strongest visitor growth rate in the MEA region.

When I was 13 years, I was exposed to the different aspects of business and trained in the different departments during school holidays like building materials, finance, HR, Marketing, etc. This early exposure is what helped me understand and drive the success of the business, with the conceptualization and establishment of Danube Buildmart, now known as Danube Home when I was 23 years old. The challenge for me initially was to establish the division in the market and make Danube Home as household name. In order to do this is I needed to develop strong business skills. This was a challenge but an achievable one as I was lucky to be trained by one of the best - my father, who mentored me and still advises me on matters to this day.

Where do you see Danube Home in terms of growth in next 2-5 years? The very first Danube Home outlet was launched in Dubai in the year 2009. After testing the waters, the brand slowly and gradually spread its wings across all potential markets in the GCC region. By 2013, we were strategically positioned across all major cities in the UAE, along with Bahrain and Oman. From mid-2013 to early 2014, the company consolidated its complete operations and buying plans, making it ready for large scale operations and expansions, one of which included our strategic entry into Saudi Arabia and Sharjah earlier this year. We are geared up for faster expansion plans and with a highly established logistics network, we will continue to identify important & potential markets across the country, for future expansion. We have substantial growth plans for the UAE market in the coming five years with all BIG BOX formats for Danube Home. Describe yourself as a Businessman and a family person. I would like to believe that like my father, Rizwan Sajan I am a down to earth, humble person who tries to helping people out in any which way I can. I have a passion for business and love to party. My motto in life is work hard and party hard. What are the influences from the family that you come from that made you a successful businessman at such a young age ? My father Mr. Rizwan Sajan, has been the most influential person in my life. I share his passion for work and business. An entrepreneur at heart, I started working from the age of 13 in one of the warehouses for my father where I was asked to work my way up the corporate ladder.
