History of the Development of Abbey Stadium

Abbey United, now known as Cambridge United, moved to Parker’s Piece at the beginning of the 1930-31 season, but this was not successful due to lack of spectator capacity and disruptions during games. In 1931, Henry Francis, the club’s president, donated land and built a grandstand and changing rooms on it, which became the club’s new home. The first match at the

newly constructed Abbey Stadium was played in August 1932 against Cambridge University Press. Subsequent stands were constructed over the years, with the final terrace completed in 1954.

There have been various redevelopments at the Abbey Stadium since then, including the addition of a roof and extra seating to the main stand, and the erection of a new all-seated stand at the south of the ground to replace the original open terrace in 1966.

In the 1991-92 season, Cambridge United were considering converting Abbey Stadium into an all-seater venue due to changes in legislation following the Hillsborough disaster, but the club’s subsequent decline meant that little has changed in the stadium over the past 15 years, and standing accommodation is still permitted below the second tier of the English league.

In December 2004, due to financial difficulties, the land on which the Abbey Stadium stands, which was donated to the club by Henry Francis in 1931, was sold to Bideawhile 445 Ltd., a company owned by then director John Howard. In January 2006, plans were announced to move the club to a new purpose-built stadium in Milton, which was met with criticism from fans for risking the club’s identity by moving out of the city. In April 2008, the club sold the corporate naming rights of the stadium to Trade Recruitment for £250,000, and in June 2009, a new deal was announced with a legal firm to rename the stadium as the R Costings Abbey Stadium.

In March 2010, Cambridge Fans United attempted to purchase the Abbey Stadium from Bideawhile 445 Ltd., but the attempt was unsuccessful, and the stadium was sold to Grosvenor Estates for £3.5 million.

On September 2, 2022, Cambridge United announced that investment from the club’s owners had allowed them to purchase the ground back from Grosvenor, making them the owners of their home stadium after 89 years.

Directions to Abbey Stadium

Load

To reach the destination from the South, take M11 and exit at Junction 14. Then, turn east onto the A14 dual carriageway. If coming from the North, take A14 from Huntingdon and also turn east onto the A14 dual carriageway. Exit the A14 at the fourth junction, located east of Cambridge, and take the slip road to the roundabout that is signposted for Stow-CumQuy. Turn right onto the A1303 and head westwards towards Cambridge. Continue straight over the first roundabout, passing Marshall Airport on the left. Go straight over two sets of traffic lights until you reach another roundabout. The Ground’s floodlights will be visible from here, and there will be a McDonald’s on the right.

Turn left onto the ring road, and then turn right at the first roundabout where you will see a large Sainsbury’s on the left. Proceed along Coldham’s Lane, and after half a mile, immediately after the traffic lights, turn right into Coldham’s Road before the railway bridge.

Bus

The Citibus C3 bus stops very close to the ground at Ditton Walk stop on Newmarket Road. It runs from the Railway Station and goes through the city center every ten minutes during the day, with longer intervals in the evenings. Park and Ride

On days when the U’s (the local football team) play at home, both home and away supporters can purchase a special £2.50 return ticket from the Newmarket Road Park & Ride to travel to and from the Abbey Stadium. This ticket is valid for one passenger only. However, if traveling with children, the normal £3 Park & Ride ticket is also available, which allows children under the age of 16 to travel for free with one fee-paying adult.

Before the 3pm kick-off, football fans can catch any of the regular Park & Ride buses heading into the city center, and all of these buses will stop at the ground. For the return journey, there will be a dedicated bus waiting in the layby outside the stadium at 4.45pm, which will take fans back to the Park & Ride once the game is over.

Train

Cambridge Station

Cambridge Rail station is located in the city center and is a 25-30 minute walk from the ground. To get to the ground, walk away from the station along Station Road and take the first right onto Tenison Road. Then take the first right again onto Devonshire Road and follow it around to the left until you reach the next junction. Turn right onto Mill Road. Walk over the railway bridge and take the third left onto Sedgewick Street. Follow this road, passing a set of traffic calming barriers and shops (at this point, you will be on Cromwell Road), until you reach a T-junction at Coldham’s Lane. In front of you, there should be a large field known as Coldham’s Common. Enter this field and follow the path under the railway bridge to the away turnstiles.

There are regular services to and from Cambridge Railway Station, where taxis are available. Alternatively, you can take the Citibus C3 service from the station, which runs every ten minutes during the day and at longer intervals in the evenings.

Cambridge north to Cambridge

To get to the stadium from Cambridge North Station, follow these directions:

1. Exit Cambridge North Station and turn left, walking through the Bike Parking area and onto the Cycle/Footpath that runs parallel to the train tracks.

2. Follow the Cycle/Footpath until you reach a Cul-de-Sac called Moss Bank, then turn right onto Fen Road.

3. Continue straight on Fen Road, which later becomes Water Street, for about 1/2 a mile until you reach the Green Dragon Pub.

4. At the pub, cross the river using the footbridge and then cross over Stourbridge Common to join Oyster Row and Garlic Row.

5. At the end of Garlic Row, you will join Newmarket Road – turn left and cross over the railway lines.

6. The stadium will be on your right-hand side.

Please note that not all trains stop at Cambridge North Station, and it’s approximately a 30-minute walk from the station to the stadium. Make sure to plan your journey accordingly and check for any updates or changes in the transportation schedule.

Cambridge United Ticket Prices

Cambridge United tickets are not classified by their matches, so the only factors that affect the price of tickets are your age and where you want to sit in the stadium. Adults will pay £18 for terrace seats and £24 for seats in The Community Stand. Concession prices range from £14 to £20, while juniors will pay £8 for terrace seats and £18 for The Community Stand (but they are not allowed in the premium seating area). Tickets for children under 12 are priced at £5 regardless of seating location.

Please note that there is a £2 surcharge on all tickets if you do not book them in advance.
