HOSTOS CONCLUDES HISTORIC 2021-22 SEASON IN NJCAA DIII CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Hostos Community College women’s basketball team had its Cinderella run come to an end, after suffering a 65-56 loss in the NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Championship Game to No. 1 seed Owens Community College at Rochester Regional Sports Center.

The Caimans conclude the 2021-22 season 17-6 overall, reaching the national championship game for a third time in four years. Along the way, Hostos, who were nationally ranked all season long, captured its fifth consecutive CUNYAC Championship while reaching the finals of the NJCAA Region XV Championship. The Caimans earned an at-large bid to the national tournament, earning victories as the No. 11 seed over No. 6 Rock Valley, No. 3 Onondaga and No. 7 Minnesota West.

Hostos led after three quarters of play (47-42) but were unable to hold off the top-seeded Express in a rematch of the 2019 NJCAA DIII Championship Game. Owens shot 53-percent from the field in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Caimans by a 23-9 margin to secure the program’s first-ever NJCAA DIII National Championship.

Dimon Walker led the Caimans in scoring, dropping 13 points. Shaina Lewis finished one rebound shy of a double-double, turning in 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Aiyana Hicks chipped in with 11 points in the loss.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CLOSES OUT HISTORIC SEASON IN SECOND ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT

Despite a valiant effort, the historic season of the 2021-22 Brooklyn College women’s basketball team came to an end, falling to tournament regional host, No. 16 Smith College, in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament, 76-58. Brooklyn ends the season with a 22-4 overall record, winning its first-ever NCAA Tournament contest. The victory also signaled CUNYAC’s first postseason victory at the national tournament since 2015.

Trailing 20-9 after the first quarter, the Bulldogs regrouped and came out in the second quarter on a 10-0 run carried by nine straight points scored by grad forward, Chanel Jemmott. Smith responded and kicked their lead back up to eight before the Bulldogs scored five unanswered capped by a Mary Dolgin made jumper. Dolgin scored seven points in the first half on 3-3 shooting from the floor. BC would trail the Pioneers 34-31 at the half.

Smith would cling to a 39-33 lead in the first three minutes of the third quarter before the Bulldogs 7-0 run, taking their first lead of the season on the contest’s opening basket. BC held their last lead of the contest on a finish in the paint by junior guard Gianna Gotti.

A Jemmott lay-in cut Smith’s advantage to 51- 48 on the first possession of the fourth quarter. However, the Pioneers made their move with an 18-2 run that stretched over five minutes to close out the game.

The Pioneers shot an efficient 11-25 from beyond the arc for the contest.

Dominant all weekend, Jemmott scored a gamehigh 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in her final game as a Bulldog. Gotti added 13 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Leading a balanced scoring attack that featured four Pioneers reaching double-digit scoring was Morgan Morrison who scored a team-high 16 points for Smith.

In the team’s opening round victory, a 70-57 win over Emmanuel College, Jemmott was tremendous all evening finishing 30 points, 22 rebounds, and three steals.

A chess match through the majority of the first half, the Bulldogs took the lead for good thanks to a 7-0 run for a 37-30 halftime advantage. The key run was sparked by a made three drained by junior guard, Ericka James, who finished with five makes from beyond the arc for the contest. The sharpshooter would finish with 17 points for the game.

With plenty of experience in the NCAA Tournament, the Saints wouldn’t go away easily, cutting the Bulldog lead to 53-51 with 8:45 remaining in regulation. However, the Bulldogs responded with a devastating 10-0 run capped at the 5:29 mark on a made three from the top of the key drained by Jemmott. Brooklyn would have a response to every Emmanuel bucket from that point on.

Both teams pressed on the defensive end for most of the game with fast-past action throughout. BC would finish with 16 steals for the game led by Gotti’s game-high eight steals. She was just as effective on the offensive end adding 15 points and five assists to her standout night.

THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) was first conceived in the early 1970s. It was during that period that the four-year college Athletic Directors began to meet as a group. Their meetings initially focused on matters pertaining to scheduling; however, it was apparent that their programs had many components in common. Notable similarities were the geographic proximity of their campuses, the large number of student-athletes already involved in inter-campus competition, and the similar academic and athletic

philosophies. This underscored the need for greater unification among CUNY athletic programs.

1 CUNY Athletic Conference

In 1972, the CUNY Athletic Directors Association was formed. The mission of the Association was to bring the existing athletic activities into an organized conference structure. Over the next few years, to complement men’s basketball (added in 1966), CUNY Championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, softball, and baseball were contested. In 1978, the athletic directors of the ten charter member institutions (Baruch, Brooklyn, City College, Hunter, John Jay, Lehman, Medgar Evers, Queens, College of Staten Island, and York) ratified a constitution which informally brought the CUNY Athletic Conference into being. In the years that followed, Brooklyn and Queens Colleges withdrew from the conference to establish membership in NCAA Division I and II, respectively.

CUNYAC was formally sanctioned in 1987 when, with the work of Dr. Roscoe Brown, then President of Bronx Community College, the CUNY Board of Trustees passed a resolution for the remaining eight members and expanded it to include a five-member community college division (Bronx, BMCC, Kingsborough, City Tech, and Queensborough). Michael Steuerman, the Athletic Director at Bronx, was named the first-ever conference commissioner and served in that post until 1991. During Steuerman’s tenure, championships in men’s volleyball and both men’s and women’s tennis were added to the four-year college slate while men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer and baseball were at the two-year level. He also oversaw the development of the various events as well as increasing the corporate support for the CUNYAC Championships.

As the 20th century came to a close, the conference was granted automatic qualification berths to the NCAA Division III Championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and softball. During the 2006-07 campaign men’s and women’s tennis were added to that list, bringing the number of “AQs” to seven. In 2012 women’s soccer was added to the “AQ” slate to bring the total to eight.

Over the years, corporate sponsorships, media opportunities, staffing, programming, and a variety of other areas were bolstered to make CUNYAC one of the top Division III conference offices in the country.

The CUNY Athletic Conference has enjoyed a tremendous amount of national success in recent years as the Conference has raised its profile nationally. Spoils include both individual and team honors, including All-America, Academic All-America, All-Region, national statistical leaders, All-State, team regional and national rankings, Regional Championships, Final Four appearances and National Championships. Sports include basketball, swimming, wrestling, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, cross country, soccer, volleyball, fencing, rifle, softball and tennis.

Nothing is given, everything is earned. This award I earned, I give thanks to the other 14 guys on my team who put their trust in me and without them I would not be the player who I am today. I also like to thank the coaching staff for believing in me and giving me the confidence to become a better player. A wise man once told me “It’s not what you are capable of, it’s what you’re willing to do”. I’m always willing to fight for what I want and to become a better person. In addition, he was invited to compete in the 2022 NJCAA All-Star Game in Las Vegas, one of only six players chosen nationally from the Division III level, where he was awarded the prestigious Francis Flax Small Man Award.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of the better players in the nation, but I couldn’t have done it without my great teammates and coaching staff, “ said Ojeda-Harvey.

Harvey was sensational in a Tigers uniform all season long. The league’s top scorer at 22.2 points per game, good for 14th in the country, the sophomore started every game for Queensborough in 2021-22. A three-time CUNYAC Player of the Week honoree,

Harvey was among the nation’s leaders in made free throws (114 – 14th) and assists (128 – 16th). He produced 15 outings of 20 or more points, including five games of 30 or more, highlighted by a 34-point outing in the CUNYAC Championship Game against Hostos.

“Khari proved to the city and region that he is one of the best guards out of New York, ‘’ said Queensborough head men’s basketball coach Clarence Emengo. “He is the ultimate leader and his game transitions to any level.”

CUNYAC HONORS BEST AND BRIGHTEST AT 35TH ANNUAL MICHAEL STEUERMAN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS DINNER

The City University of New York Athletic Conference awarded its most prestigious honors - the 2021-22 Scholar-Athletes of the Year - at the 35th Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at Terrace on the Park in Flushing, N.Y. The event was held in-person for the first time in three years.

In a tradition that began when the conference was first founded in 1986-87, the CUNYAC annually recognizes four of its graduating student-athletes, rich in both academics and athletics, as its Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

In 2021-22, the four student-athletes to earn the distinct honor were Kingsborough’s Neilon Bridgeman, Queensborough’s Amira Durkovic, CCNY’s Nicholas Karkut and Baruch’s Lauren Kraker.

The four Scholar-Athletes were presented with a Microsoft Surface Pro 8, a watch, a Nike Dri-Fit sweatshirt amongst other items thanks to our presenting sponsors.

In addition to recognizing our four Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the CUNY Athletic Conference honored 36 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mentions along with 20 All-Americans from the 2021-22 athletic year. Each was presented a plaque amongst other trinkets throughout the evening.

The CUNY Athletic Conference also introduced its inaugural Eileen Lyons Service Appreciation Award, in honor of the late longtime CUNYAC Administrative Assistant. Lyons worked at the conference office upon the league’s official inception in 1987 and was instrumental in the establishment of the CUNYAC office and the annual Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards Dinner. The award was presented to CUNYAC Associate Director for Operations, Kim Santoiemma, and CUNYAC Assistant Director for Business, Yvette Martinez.

“It’s an honor to receive such an award,” said Santoiemma. “But it’s more of an honor to recognize the hard work and dedication of our graduating student-athletes. They deserve this and so much more!”

The 2021-22 CUNY Athletic Conference Appreciation and Recognition Award was given to the CUNYAC Medical Advisory Team, honoring their outstanding dedication, support and contributions to the lives of so many student-athletes in our return to athletics as a conference.

The prestigious award was also given to Geraldine Thomas, Chief of Staff for the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and COO, along with Todd Drantch, Associate General Counsel in the CUNY Office of General Counsel.

CUNY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WELCOMES BACK LAGUARDIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE RED HAWKS AHEAD OF 2022-23 SEASON

The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) is pleased to welcome back LaGuardia Community College to its community college division, effective for the 2022-23 academic year. With the addition of LaGuardia, CUNYAC is the official conference for 14 campuses of the CUNY system.

“CUNYAC is excited to welcome back the LaGuardia Red Hawks for the upcoming season, after a brief hiatus, and we look forward to supporting their student-athletes, coaches and staff as they return to athletics competition,” said CUNYAC Interim Commissioner, Carl Christian.

“Athletics have a unique way of bringing communities together, so restarting the Red Hawks following the past two and a half years of the COVID-19 pandemic will benefit our community and create a sense of team spirit,” said LaGuardia Community College President Kenneth Adams. “Having an athletics program also benefits our recruitment efforts—drawing students interested in playing team sports during college. We look forward to cheering on our players. Go Red Hawks!”

“LaGuardia Community College is excited to have athletics back in Long Island City, Queens,” said Andrew Walker, director of Athletics and Recreation for LaGuardia. “The students, faculty, staff, and friends of LaGuardia are excited to cheer for their Red Hawks!”

The LaGuardia Red Hawks originally joined the CUNY Athletic Conference in 2013-14, enjoying success in their first stint with the conference. The LaGuardia women’s basketball team won the league title in 2016, and the LaGuardia men’s basketball team captured CUNYAC championships in 2016 and 2017.

The first Red Hawks teams to restart are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball. Fall schedules for men’s and women’s basketball, and for men’s soccer, are available on the LaGuardia website; additional schedules to be added soon.

LaGuardia Red Hawks teams will compete against teams from five CUNY community colleges— Queensborough, Kingsborough, Bronx, Hostos, and Borough of Manhattan. The Red Hawks will also compete against regional community college teams in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Conference—Ulster, Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Dutchess, Sullivan, and Monroe College-Bronx.

2022-23 CUNYAC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 31

CUNYAC COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL HISTORY

Throughout the years of the CUNYAC Community College Championship Tournament, the Steve Weingard trophy has gone to the institutions that have worked the hardest for the venerated award.

The women of Hostos were voted into the top-10 of the NJCAA coaches poll following another strong campaign in 2021-22. The two-time national champions finished 17-6 overall, winning their fourth consecutive CUNYAC and NJCAA Region XV championships, returning to the national championship game for a third time in four seasons.

The Caimans have been to four consecutive NJCAA tournament appearances, including a fifth-place finish in 2017 before claiming consecutive national titles in 2018 and 2019 along with another title appearance in 2022. Hostos is off to another strong start in 2022, led by second year head coach, Dwight Shaw. The Caimans are ranked nationally looking to win their third national championship.

About the Steve Weingard Trophy

Steve Weingard was a former Athletic Director at Queensborough Community College. The first elected CUNYAC Community College President retired and subsequently passed away following 30 years of dedicated service to QCC, the CUNY system, and its student-athletes. He remains in the hearts and minds of many student-athletes every year as the Men’s Community College Trophy was renamed in his honor.

On the men’s side, Hostos won its second consecutive CUNYAC championship and sixth in program history after knocking off Queensborough, 76-63. Ashaunte Manuel, a 2022 CUNYAC All-Star, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after a strong showing over the course of the week.

Former Queensborough head coach Tom Sinnickson is the men’s all-time CUNYAC Tournament title leader, claiming four total championships. Sinnickson’s tenure was highlighted by three straight championships at the helm of the Tigers (1996-98). Former Kingsborough head coach Hassan Duncombe and another former KCC head coach, Dennis Pradier, (1990, ‘92, ‘93) are tied for second place with three titles, after winning back-to-back championships, while Caimans head coach Marquee Poole looks to etch his name into the record books with a third title of his own.

In the history book, one coach boasts more basketball championship titles than any other CUNY Athletic Conference coach at any level, Rodney Carr. Back in 1998, the success of Carr’s BMCC Panthers team was the reason the fourth championship was created in the first place. Carr’s early teams dominated the 1990s and finally, by 1998, CUNYAC was finally able to showcase the community college women’s division in the tournament setting; Carr’s teams rolled off the first six titles.

In 2004, a first-year women’s program, Hostos, coached by one of Carr’s colleagues, former Medgar Evers Athletic Director Renee Bostic, broke the longest championship streak in CUNYAC basketball history. After two titles, Bostic moved onto another coaching position and Carr moved to Hostos to coach the Caimans to back-to-back crowns in 2006 and 2007.

NO. 10 HOSTOS DEFEATS BRONX TO WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT CUNYAC TITLE

2022 Women’s Championship Game @ Borough of

CC

For a fifth consecutive season, the Hostos Community College women’s basketball team is CUNYAC Champions, defeating Bronx, 86-40, on Friday night to win the 2022 CUNYAC/HSS Community College Women’s Basketball Championship.

The nationally ranked No. 10 Caimans turned in a strong performance on the campus of BMCC, hoisting the championship trophy for a conferencerecord ninth time in program history. Hostos is now one of two schools to win five consecutive championships in league history, accomplishing the feat for the first time since BMCC (1998-2003).

The defending conference champions only trailed for the first thirty seconds of the contest. The Caimans scored 13 straight points to take control of the quarter and ultimately the game.

Shaina Lewis, the 2022 CUNYAC Player of the Year, led the way for Hostos. She fell a steal shy of a triple-double, recording 17 points, 12 rebounds (five offensive), nine steals and five assists. For her efforts, the Brooklyn native was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player.

“First off, I have to say thank you to my teammates and my Coach for putting this team together,” Lewis said. “We worked hard, we stuck together and played good defense,” she added.

Savannah Williams, the 2022 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, added 15 points, seven boards, five assists and three steals for the Caimans. All five starters for the Caimans scored in double figures in the contest.

“We still have a lot of work to do. Consistency is key, we take it one day at a time, we have to play hard because defense wins championships,” CUNYAC Coach of the Year, Dwight Shaw said.

Bronx, appearing in the CUNYAC finals for the first time since 2016, just couldn’t keep pace with the run-and-gun offense of Hostos. CUNYAC All-Star Shawnasia Ofaire scored 16 points for the Broncos, adding nine boards, three assists and three steals to close out the night.

Following the women’s game, the Hostos men took care of business against Queensborough, defeating the Tigers, 76-63, to capture its second straight CUNYAC title. It’s the second consecutive season and sixth time in CUNYAC history that programs on the men’s and women’s side from the same school won the league title. It was the fourth time both Hostos squads won the championship in the same season.

CUNYAC BASKETBALL HISTORY

A Look at the Four-Year College Championship

Since the inception of the CUNYAC Tournament as a Christmas Invitational in 1966, many student-athletes have battled for the esteemed title and a chance to house the Dutch Shoe or Gary Smith trophy.

In 2022, Baruch College returned to the mountain top, defeating the regular-season champion Lehman College Lightning in overtime, 75-69. The Bearcats secured the Dutch Shoe for the first time since 2019 and the fourth time in program history, punching their ticket to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Emil Purisic was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player, turning in a strong performance with 23 points (9-10 FG) and 14 rebounds.

On the women’s side, for a second year in a row and third time in four years, the Brooklyn College Bulldogs retained the Gary Smith trophy with a 59-51 victory over John Jay Jay. At the forefront of the win was 2022 CUNYAC Player of the Year and championship MVP, Chanel Jemmott. The Brooklyn native finished with game-high in points (18) and rebounds (12), becoming the first player in conference history to earn MVP recognition on three separate occasions.

Over the years, eleven schools have won the CUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Championship, with all eight current members holding the hardware at least once. The CUNYAC Men’s Championship has been won by four different schools in the last 11 seasons. In that time span, Baruch’s John Alesi has been the only current head coach to have taken home the championship more than once.

Seven institutions have taken home the Women’s Gary Smith Trophy with Medgar Evers and York being the only teams to not claim the honor. Machli Joseph is the all-time leader in CUNYAC Championships with eight total. Gary Smith and former CCNY and Hunter head coach Jackee Meadow are second on the list with five championships. The only current winners of the crown are Lehman’s Eric Harrison, Brooklyn’s Alex Lang, and Hunter’s John Garrett.

In January 2010, legendary CCNY Head Coach Gary Smith passed away, prompting CUNYAC to rename the trophy in his honor. Smith’s teams of the 1980’s were dominant in winning five CUNY titles in six years, including four in a row. He served CCNY as an Associate Athletic Director until his passing.

Since the inception of the CUNY Tournament as a Christmas Invitational in 1966, the Dutch Shoe, the Four-Year Men’s Tournament Trophy, has been the prize that CUNY student-athletes have battled for. The award celebrates the original settlers of New York City who dubbed it New Amsterdam. Subsequently, the city’s name was changed to New York after the British took control of the Big Apple.

BACK-TO-BACK! BROOKLYN KNOCKS OFF JOHN JAY TO WIN 2022 CUNYAC/HSS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

2022 Women’s Championship Game @ CCNY

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs are CUNYAC Champions once again, defeating John Jay College, 59-51, in the 2022 CUNYAC/HSS Women’s Basketball Championship Game at the Nat Holman Gymnasium at City College of New York. With the victory, Brooklyn earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship.

The Bulldogs held off the second-seeded Bloodhounds to hoist the infamous Gary Smith Trophy for a second straight season and the fourth time in program history. It’s also the second straight season that Brooklyn went unbeaten (140) against CUNYAC opponents.

Chanel Jemmott, the 2022 CUNYAC Player of the Year, turned in a monster performance with game-highs in points (18) and rebounds (20), including 13 offensive boards. For her efforts, she was tabbed the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. It was her third championship MVP citation, becoming the first CUNYAC student-athlete to earn MVP recognition on three separate occasions.

Gianna Gotti, a CUNYAC First Team All-Star, finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists, while teammate and fellow allconference performer Ericka James added 11 points, nine rebounds. Each was named to the all-tournament team.

Neither team shot the ball well in the opening quarter. Despite shooting 19-percent from the field, Brooklyn took advantage of second chance opportunities, corralling 11 offensive rebounds to own a 13-6 lead after one period of play.

Brooklyn opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter, thanks to seven points from James during the frame. The Bulldogs took a 29-16 advantage into intermission, capped off by a three-pointer from Aleah Rafat.

John Jay, making its first appearance in the finals since 1997, did not go away quietly, chipping away at the margin in the third quarter to get within five (33-28) with 4:27 remaining. Brooklyn countered with back-to-back baskets to extend its lead, holding a 41-33 lead going into the final period of play.

The Bulldogs grew their lead to double-digits in the final quarter, maintaining an advantage for the remainder of the contest to clinch the championship and punch their ticket to the national tournament.

Purisic, a Second Team CUNYAC All-Star, turned in a dominant performance in the victory, shooting 90-percent from the field (9-10 FG) and connecting on 5-of-6 free throw attempts. For his performance, he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Adnan Bajrami, a First Team CUNYAC All-Star, produced 18 points, three rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks in the win, while Sean Donnellan added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. For their efforts, Bajrami and Donnellan were named to the all-tournament team.

In the third meeting between the two squads this season, Baruch won the contest that mattered most, hoisting the legendary Dutch Shoe for the first time since 2019 and fourth time in program history.

.241 7-29 (Feldman 3-4, Geathers 2-8, Batista 1-6, Fernandez 1-4). Blocks: 3 (Batista 3)

17. Steals: 8 (Batista 3, Idrissou 3, Feldman, DeGrasse).

The first half of play featured 12 lead changes, as the top two teams in the conference all season long traded blows in the opening frame. Lehman, making its first appearance in the finals since 2018, finished the stanza strong, outscoring Baruch 17-8 over the final 7:55 to take a 39-29 lead into halftime.

The Bearcats stormed back to begin the second half, using a 12-2 run over 3:41 to knot the contest at 41, and took the lead with a jumper from Bajrami.

The two teams continued to claw their way to victory, exchanging field goals into the final minute of regulation. Following a free throw from Will Feldman to make it a two-point game (64-62) in the final seconds, Baruch came back down on its next possession to tie the contest, thanks to a basket from Purisic. The Lightning had a look at the end but were unable to convert, as the final needed extra time to determine a winner

In overtime, Baruch scored back-to-back field goals to take a 68-64 lead. Lehman cut the deficit to one with a trio of charity tosses, but back-to-back baskets from Michael Richards, the 2022 CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award Winner, gave the Bearcats a 72-67 edge with 1:07 remaining. Despite a basket from the Lightning to trim the deficit, Baruch hit free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Lehman’s Gian Batista, the 2022 CUNYAC Player of the Year, turned in a triple-double effort with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, but it wasn’t enough to lead the regular season champions to victory. Isaiah Geathers added 16 points and five rebounds, while Feldman dropped a team-high 17 points.
