Family-Friendly Tailgating

Whether you’re spending Friday night in a high school parking lot or Saturday mornings with your favorite college alumni, you’re probably going to at least one tailgate before your favorite sporting event this fall. If you want to keep your whole family part of the party, here are a few tips to make your tailgate successful.

Keep your food choices simple and classic

Hamburgers, brats, and chips and dip are classic for a reason. When you’re out before a big game, you want to fill up without a lot of fuss and mess. With just a small grill, you can prepare many of these game day dishes for a large family. And if you’d like to spruce it up for a special game, it’s simple.

Create a theme burger based on the opponents’ mascot. Try a make-ahead fruit salad in your team’s colors. Wrap sandwiches in easy, printable school logos. Bring thermoses full of hot water and packs of ready-to-mix hot chocolate when the temperature falls Make clean-up easy When you are done with your tailgate and ready to head into the stadium, the last thing you want to do is clean up a big mess. Make sure your tailgating gear is neatly organized before you hit the parking lot. Knowing where everything goes makes it easy to put back in place when you’re all done. Try using a cardboard six-pack holder to carry condiments, napkins, and spoons and forks all in one place. Use

disposable foil trays for serving and paper products for eating so that you don’t have to carry dirty dishes home.

If you’re worried about being green, you can even find biodegradable plates, cups, napkins, and silverware so that your tailgate doesn’t last years into the future. Aluminum serving trays are also often recyclable.

Keep your tailgate safe When you’re in the middle of having fun, it’s easy to forget safety. Food safety is very important for tailgating.

Make sure your cooler stays wellstocked with ice to keep food and condiments cold enough to stop foodborne illnesses; it’s probably best to have two coolers, so you don’t cross contaminate your drinks. A portable meat thermometer makes sure you don’t share a food poisoning carrying virus with your friends and family.

If you’re tailgating in a parking lot, you will want to keep an eye out on kids. Darting in and out between cars is risky, and running around grills is dangerous.

Everyone deserves to have a good time When you think of games and activities for your tailgate, be sure to include everyone who will be celebrating with you. Classic games like bean bag tosses, catch, and ring toss or horseshoes work for a variety of skill levels. If you want to include more creative types who don’t love games, try some non-competitive activities, too. Maybe facepainting in your team’s colors or creating sign to cheer on a loved one on the field will be fun for those who like more artistic endeavors.

POWER Each fall, the muggy summer evenings in Missouri slowly give way to crisp harvest festival nights. High school sports provide a handy signpost to guide us along this annual journey. The communities in the area enjoy the ritual and camaraderie of following a new season’s teams and athletes. We revel in those young men and women pulling on the same colored jerseys that some of us in the stands wore, on many of the same fields.

The true power of high school sports, though, does not come from the bleachers, nor the press box. No matter how eloquently we journalists try to convey the colorful story gleaned from the black and white of stats, wins, losses; it is not the true reason high school sports holds a special place in our society.

That power happens in mostly unseen, personal moments.

The true power of high school sports comes when the coach has to grab the shoulder pads of a terrified freshman tight end and calm him down with last second instructions, as the All-District senior limps off the field with the trainers. A different strain of that same power is evident in the ten sets of eyes in the huddle watching the freshman run onto the field to join them.

The true power of high school sports happens when the girl who wakes up at 4:30am for her first training run, nervous

she won’t be able to keep up with the other runners, doesn’t hit snooze. That power overwhelms when she finishes with the pack, out of breath, exhilarated.

The true power of high school sports is gut wrenching when the kid on the verge of a tearful meltdown, stares at himself in the bathroom mirror and makes the pledge, the vow, that his name won’t be on the cut-list next year. That power is realized twelve months later when that coach tacks a piece of paper on the board.

The true power of high school sports shows in the scribbles on the last question of homework, hard to read because it was finished under the rhythmic pulse of passing sodium highway lights on a cramped bus seat. The “A-” of red ink confirms that power.

We, on the outside, honor the sacrifices the student athletes with our voices, our words, and our pocketbooks. We do these things to celebrate and lift them up. We try like heck to be a part of the process, and without a doubt, we are.

However, they challenge their perceptions of identity and self-worth daily, with each try-out, practice, and game. And they go at it alone. They have to. It is in those victories and defeats that the power of high school sports truly shines through.

Those introspective moments of overcoming doubt and finding courage define what it is to be a student athlete, not wins and losses.

But, with all that being said, here’s hoping your team wins a few along the way.

Staying in the Game When Roger McPheeters was presented with his plaque for being named the Missouri Girls Basketball Official of the Year by the National Federation of High School Associations at last year’s state basketball championships, he said he enjoys officiating so much is because it keeps him in the game. Roger’s been “in the game” for more than 20 years as a basketball official and more than 30 as a football referee. For Roger, it’s not about the money or the notoriety of being named both the girls basketball and high school football official of the year less than six months apart that motivates him, it’s being a part of the sports he loves and just can’t get out of his system.

I know this because I’ve got the same bug. I am the guy who was reading the announcement as Roger was being honored. I’m the Public Address Announcer.

For the same reasons that people coach, officiate, write about or broadcast sporting events, I am the guy you hear but don’t see.

And that’s fine, I’m happy to still be part of the game – or games, in my case. I stay busy throughout the year going to events, checking the microphone, preparing and reading scripts, all so you, the fan, don’t really even know I’m there. The goal of an announcer is to inform and sometimes entertain, but to never take anything away from the action.

The announcer has a big role in how the game goes in today’s “showbiz” era. Music and sound effects are all part of the game. Go

to any high school baseball game across Mid-Missouri and you’ll hear somebody’s “walkup” music (that’s a special song being played for a batter as he walks up to the plate). Player introductions are an event with music and choreographed lighting.

And all of that is handled by the PA announcer.

I, like a lot of greying gentlemen who want to feel young, am blessed to still have a role in sports. I have been announcing basketball, baseball and football at the high school level, and lately I’ve spent the summer working for the Jefferson City Renegades collegiate baseball team. The Renegades take “walkup” music to a different level as players ask to change their personal song more than they change their socks.

So when you’re at your local game and you hear a voice from above, remember, it’s probably just an old jock doing what he can to stay in the game.

Sport Injuries and

How to Prevent them

Every year nearly 2 million American high school students suffer injuries while playing sports. These injuries result in 500,000 doctor visits and up to 30,000 hospitalizations annually.

And according to the CDC, who collected those numbers, almost half of high school sports injuries are preventable. Here are some easy ways to make sure your child stays safe this season.

One of the most common kinds of injuries come from overuse of a specific body part or muscle

group. Whether it’s a rotator cuff strain in volleyball, an ankle injury in cheerleading, or a knee problem in football, it’s important to make sure your child’s practice and conditioning schedule isn’t exacerbating a hidden problem. First, make sure a good physical is taken with your doctor before practices begin. This helps you set a baseline for your child’s health. And talk to his or her coaches before the season begins, so that you know how your child should be advancing throughout the season. If you think your child is overworking, be sure to talk with coaches about how gradually

conditioning and training should increase. If your child is practicing at home as well as with the team, make sure they practice the way they do at school: staying hydrated; using all the same, properly fitting safety equipment; making sure to properly warm up and cool down each time; and communicating if pain is felt.

It’s important to emphasize with student athletes that performance, not winning, should be the goal. Often they push themselves competitively and don’t communicate when they are feeling pain. You should stress to your children that if they feel pain in a movement, they should stop until they are seen by a doctor. Communication is the best way to prevent injuries!

Concussions are a big worry for many parents of high school athletes, and you should know how your school and sporting association handle on-field head injuries. Often, they have tools like the SCAT, Sideline Concussion Assessment Tool, to check off common symptoms of a concussion. Some schools even provide a baseline neurocognitive test each season so that long-term issues can be tracked after a head injury. You know your child’s personality best, so if there seem to be any lingering problems in the weeks after a head injury, contact doctors and coaches as quickly as you can. In any situation, it’s very important that an injured student be cleared by a doctor before returning to practice or a game.

Finally, it’s important that student athletes rest, as well. It’s good to encourage your child to take a season off from sports so that they have time to recuperate and grow. Many changes are taking place inside their body, so they need to get used to their new

abilities and how their bodies function.

Mixing it up is a great way to encourage rest to different areas of the body. While they might make great strides in a fall sport, a break during the winter season might be a good idea before they start summer practices. Or changing sports each semester during the school year, but taking the summer off might be the best way to make sure they stay injury free. Regular conditioning and general exercise can take place during the off times, but make sure they don’t overuse areas that are commonly injured during sporting seasons.

As said before, you know your child best. So if you keep a constant line of communication open with him or her and those who coach and train your student athlete, you’re more likely to catch an injury before it happens.

The usual list of questions shares traits with the Woody Hayes pattern of play calling: predictable, dull, and cautious.

“What did you like about your team’s effort tonight?”

“Did anything in practices last week make you think the game would turn out this way?”

“What was the difference in the game?”

“How do you put this one behind you?”

And the classic, “Next week is the start of conference/district games. You get to wipe the slate clean, right?”

“Midnight snack tonight--what will it be?”

“Which player must you avoid eye contact with in the locker room or you might start laughing?”

“On a scale of one to ten--one being ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ and ten being ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It,’ where does this loss fall?”

“Coaches are quick to give players credit when the game turns out well. Don’t you want to blame them when a game turns out this bad?”

And the obvious, “Your dog will be happy to see you tonight, won’t he?”

Safe, routine, expected.

You know, using those questions may not make talking to a coach after a loss any easier, but I’d pay better attention to the answers.

Maybe if I were more confident I could go long and use the series of questions that I really want to ask.

And I’d like to end with, “Coach, your thoughts about tonight’s post-game interview?”

“In the larger scheme of things (North Korean nuclear capabilities, availability of affordable health care, threat of climate change), a loss really doesn’t mean much, does it?”

Always Expect The Unexpected Upon graduating from high school, I began my quest to be a radio broadcaster. My interest was in sports play-by-play. I attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando which provided some great experience and left me with some lasting memories.

One of those I’ll remember forever memories was in 1979, I was a sophomore and UCF had just begun their football program playing Division III and NAIA schools throughout the Southeast. We were on a trip to play Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi and I was assigned the task of interviewing then head coach Don Jonas after the game.

Now broadcast equipment and technology was limited at that time, there was no such thing as a wireless mic. So I had to remove my head phones and dash down the stands from the press box, across the field to catch the coach before he disappeared into the locker room. After getting the coaches attention, I then had to run back across the field to grab the mic and cord which had been lowered to me from the press box above. By the time I had gotten back to Coach Jonas, I was totally gasping for air and I could tell that Coach Jonas was not pleased with me. But he graciously waited for me, as I huffed and puffed, mic in my hand working to get myself in the correct position to see the cue from the press box to start the interview. But to no avail. I could not see the person

giving me the cue. Finally after what seemed like eternity, a member of our broadcast team ran down the stands and yelled you’re live Ross!

So I nervously began my interview with Coach Jonas, who was becoming more and more anxious with me, but still stood right in there, as fired away with my questions.

Finally, gaining confidence with each question I asked it was time to thank the coach and send it back up to the booth.

However, and I’ll never forget this. As I readied myself to say, thanks coach, now let’s send it back upstairs. Coach Jonas firmly slapped me on my stomach as he ran off to the locker room. The blow to my abs was such that my big finish ended with a whimper and me uttering an inaudible series of words that sounded more like me losing my lunch.

Of course there were other early broadcast memories that have contributed to my career, such as the time Gene “Torchy” Clark the fiery basketball coach for UCF grabbed our mic courtside during the game and said to his wife, “Claire if you’re listening, you might as well start dinner, this game is pretty much over.”

You can’t plan those experiences. They just happen. The unexpected is a part of life and you just have to learn to roll with it.
