Tabula Rosa is how the ancients phrased it, but as a child I knew it better as a “Big Chief.” For one of the highlights of starting every new school year during my elementary days was going to K-Mart to get my classroom supplies, including that blank red tablet with a picture of an Indian warrior on the front, just waiting to be filled with sentences, scribbles, and practice runs for cursive writing. Today, of course, few schools even teach cursive writing—it’s not required in 41 states, in fact—and some teenagers cannot even read it, as demonstrated by a young witness in a recent murder trial who admitted in court that she could not decipher a document a lawyer handed to her just because it was written in cursive. (OMG, YGTBK! GAFYK!) Likewise, I’m sure that the image of the “Big Chief” is now offensive to some, and if K-Marts are even still in business, I have no idea where I would find one today.
On the other hand, for fellow time travelers from the mid-twentieth century such as myself, the very notation of this new year still seems far too futuristic to be real. For if it actually is going to be 2015, shouldn’t we have those flying cars that were promised to us long ago in the Jetsons? And more seriously, how is it that our culture seems less civil and our society more fractious than even a decade or so ago? For indeed, can anyone look at the world today and say that we are genuinely progressing onward to a better future? Fortunately, however, one thing remains not only consistent but even encouraging. For despite the dizzying differences of our day, Jesus Christ is still the same. In mathematical terms, He is our Constant, the non-varying value that is completely fixed, a nullary needing no arguments in order to prove that He is true, for He simply is. Full stop. Quod erat demonstrandum. QED, or that which is to be shown.

A simple thank you hardly seems enough for this small, but dedicated, group who meet every first Saturday to prepare the Communion elements for the next day’s worship services in the Sanctuary. They enjoy serving alongside each other as they complete the worshipful work of preparing the elements. They end their service with a special time of prayer for the church before breaking bread together over brunch at Skeeters. Every member of the team says it helps them feel more connected to what happens in worship and therefore enables them to draw closer to God during worship. All say they end up feeling more blessed than they expected. Thanks are also hardly enough for T. J. Szarfarz, who stays up all that night to bake the bread for Communion. Christ Church is truly blessed by these who serve us so well so that we might serve all who come for a holy meal of remembrance and celebration. churchmatters Well done, good and faithful servant! 7 year old lives out the Gospel! Seven year old Audrey, daughter of members Stanton and Liz Brown had an idea to sell old toys, books, and make a ton of rainbow looms bracelets to sell in a garage sale at her home. She raised $222! She then took the money raised to buy 37 stuffed animals for kids in St. Luke’s Hospital in Sugar Land. Well done good and faithful servant! God bless Audrey and her family!
Women’s Bible Study - GROW Upon completion of the Monday morning Women’s Bible Study on “Gideon,” we decided to take on a mission project. What happens when 35 women ranging in age from 30-something to mid 80’s kick into action? Well, you end up with 311 pair of socks and 228 pair of underwear! The items were donated to Family Promise and Soles for Souls. May our God continue to bless these ladies for a job well done!

Bldg. on 16431 Lexington. Mentoring involves meeting with one student once a week for the school year. Time with your student can be spent reading, tutoring, playing games or just talking. You can mentor at Christ Church’s adopted school, Holley Elementary, where 58% of the students are economically disadvantaged OR right across the street at First Colony Middle School, where nearly 13% also financially struggle. Looking for a new ministry to serve in this New Year? It occurs one week each quarter right here at Christ Church. Over 300 volunteer hours are logged in and your help is needed. Family Promise, a program that reaches out to families displaced from their homes, returns to Christ Church on January 25-30. Ways to serve in this ministry include providing supplies, setting up and breaking down rooms, doing laundry, and preparing meals. Other opportunities are available, such as serving as a dinner or overnight host. Calling all Middle School students! Come and join us for a week of Missions here at home. Each day we will set out to serve in a different way around our area. Areas include packing meals for those children in need, assisting with our Garden Ministry at Christ Church, and helping out at the Houston Food Bank. This event is open to all students in Middle School, including those just starting 6th grade. On Wednesday we will have a special day where we head to the Houston Zoo. Carpenter’s Hands is a day where projects are performed around Christ Church - all in an effort to beautify God’s House. On this day, you’ll use the skills that God has given you, learn some new skills that God may inspire in you, and fellowship with other members of the church whom you may not have been in contact with yet. We will perform small projects, repair and paint walls and ceilings, power wash concrete surfaces, clean out flowerbeds, re-plant where needed, organize closets, set up stage equipment in gym, build new closets, expand storage space, improve the IT network and infrastructure, replace carpet anything that would help the church facilities be more useful and beautiful. This event is for ages 12 and up - please accompany your children if they are between 12 and 15 years old. No experience is necessary. Leaders will gather at the church at 7 am, and breakfast service for those participating will begin at 7:30 am. Work will commence at 8 am. Lunch will be provided, and work will conclude by 3 pm. Bring whatever tools and ladders you have available to perform your tasks. Early registration is requested so that teams can be formed and assigned to tasks for the work day.
