LET US WORSHIP Third Sunday after the Epiphany • 11:00 am • January 24, 2021

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

What Splendid Rays of Truth and Grace — Karl Kroeger

GREETING INTROIT

My God Is a Rock — arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw My God is a rock in a weary land, shelter in a time of storm. I know He is a rock in a weary land, shelter in a time of storm.

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 62:5-12 (In Unison)

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love;” and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.”

#110 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God — EIN' FESTE BURG

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Psalm 91 — Craig Courtney You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, say to the Lord, "My refuge, my fortress, my God in whom I trust." He will deliver you from the fowler's snare, and under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness shall be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror by night or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness or ravages by midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand; but you will not be harmed. If you make the Most High your dwelling even the Lord, who is my refuge, then no harm will befall you; no scourge will approach your tent. He will give His angels charge over you; on their hands they will lift you up, lest you strike your foot upon a stone.

SCRIPTURE Jonah 3:1-5, 10

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

Come, Thou Fount — David Ashley White Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace! Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love. Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he to rescue me from danger, interposed with precious blood. Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Most holy and gracious God accept these gifts from our hearts. May they be used to share the message of your love with a world that is hurting. May these gifts shine like light in the darkness offering hope, and peace. May we offer ourselves and dedicate our lives to your service this week using our talents and time to build your kingdom. All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

In Memoriam Lyndon Martin Wall December 16, 2020 William Harris Hunter January 9, 2021 The ministers and members of Centenary Church extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved families and pray they may know the comfort and peace of our Heavenly Father.

Sympathy is extended to Craig Collins in the death of his father, Paul Akers Collins on January 7, 2021.

Dear Faith Family, We at Loaves & Fishes have been overwhelmed with the thoughts and generosity of all of you during this past Thanksgiving and Christmas season. We were able to give out wonderful holiday meals. Our request for breakfast items for the food pantry filled shelves in two separate rooms. The Christmas Eve and other monetary donations were beyond anything I’ve ever seen in the 18 years I’ve been fortunate to volunteer with L&F. I don’t know the names of all who donated, but wanted everyone to know that we take our job to manage the money entrusted to us seriously. There are so very many people in our community hurting now—many for the first time ever having to ask for help. Please know that your gifts are truly making a difference in so many lives. Gratefully yours, Marianne Bach

THE WESLEY PRAYER CHALLENGE

Now – February 6 We began the New Year with a prayer that has been used by Methodists since 1755. It is known as The Wesley Covenant Prayer. Many people around the world and through the centuries have used this prayer to deepen their faith. For some it has become a guide for their lives. It was John Wesley’s expectation that the people called Methodists would use this prayer to remember who they were by renewing their faith through fulling trusting God’s love and grace to care for and lead them. Do you want to renew your passion in 2021? Would you like to deepen your faith and grow in your understanding of how to follow Jesus in the daily movements of your life? Our journey continues through “The Wesley Prayer Challenge” by Chris Folmsbee. We began on January 17 but it's not too late for you particiapte. Our Senior Minister, Glenn Kinken, is using his sermons to lead and inspire us each week as we consider the words of the Wesley Covenant Prayer each day for three weeks. As we move through the prayer, we will reflect on its meaning and then consider how to respond to its guidance through our daily reflections. You can purchase the book HERE. Each daily reading includes Scripture, reflection, and a challenge for that day. Choose how you want to engage, as an individual, with your family, or by joining a weekly discussion on Zoom. Options will be Sundays at 9:30am, Mondays at 7:00pm, or on Wednesdays at Noon. If you have questions about this congregational opportunity please contact Rev. Bret Cogan. You can learn more and choose your Zoom link by clicking on the ENGAGE TAB of the church website.
