Family & Youth Mission Trips

SpringHill Camp is awesome! Sandra Andrews, Ginny Allison, Lori, Olivia and Cooper Hoberty and Mike, Megan, Peter and John Resener enjoyed three days of service, worship and fun at SpringHill over Memorial Day weekend. The most rewarding part of the weekend was knowing that we were serving Christ in helping prepare this Christian Camp for 3,000 campers this summer.
…….Mike Resener35 people from CUMC (28 students and 7 adults) spent a week working, serving and playing in Reynosa, Mexico this June.

We were blessed with perfect (but hot) weather, a sense of teamwork and unity, and safety throughout our trip. We built 2 homes, helped lead a Vacation Bible School for local kids, and even had time to do a little shopping at a Mexican market. We helped people in need, made little children smile and laugh, and we grew in our relationships with Christ. It was a very good trip.

The RRRR’s are in the Church!
• RELEVANT
We will provide resources that contribute to personal and spiritual growth in everyday life.
(Heb 5:12-14 MSG)
For weeks, we were bombarded by the warning “The R’s are Coming!” and it got your attention. Some guesses offered:

• a revival was being planned (great idea!)

• the Book of Revelation was going to be studied
• recreational ministry (yes, that is coming also)
The truth is that the Four R’s are an outgrowth of the work of THE STREAM’s Dream team (visioning team) and the use of the marketing grant THE STREAM received for 2008.
The Stream is an outflow of Carmel United Methodist Church as a nontraditional service of worship and praise, in a family-oriented, relaxed atmosphere. To be creative in communicating our presence and purpose to our community as a part of our marketing grant, we have a mission/vision/slogan that articulates what we are about.
The STREAM is…

• REAL
In a day when superficiality is the norm, we will be authentic and genuine.
(Isaiah 29:13 NIV)
• RELATIONAL
Through authentic Christian love, we will help people develop deep relationships with God and others.
(Matt 5:14-16 MSG)
• REVEALING
We will demystify the Bible so that God’s teachings are clear.
(2 Corinth 4:2-5 MSG)
As planning of THE STREAM worship is team driven, all teams will be using these guidelines to discern the direction of worship using music, the message, and media such as video, drama, dance, etc. On Sunday, June 1, I shared the message from Nehemiah 6:1-16. When Nehemiah was called by God to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem, he set out to follow that call but there were many voices and distractions that tried to lead him astray to stop the building of the wall. But Nehemiah stayed focused on his task and vision as he continually reminded himself “I’m doing a great work; I can’t come down”. Having a plan and vision makes a great difference in an end result.
We are excited about our process of developing this
style of worship and want our entire church family to share in this enthusiasm as we know “one size does not fit” all for worship styles. So, find your fit, and invite your friends who do not already have a family to also come to find their fit. That is one way we may be serving as disciples of Jesus Christ. All of us are here with Carmel United Methodist Church to be “A Christ-centered community of ordinary people who endeavor to make a difference and accomplish the extraordinary.”
What a great church family we have!!!

2008 General Conference
HOOSIER UNITED METHODISTS APPROVE UNITY PLAN
By Rev. Curt HuntWith shouts of joy and prayers of thanksgiving, members of both the South Indiana and North Indiana United Methodist Annual Conferences approved a plan to physically unite the two conferences into one new Indiana Annual Conference.
Indiana United Methodist Bishop Mike Coyner announced the vote results in the closing session of the South Indiana Conference Saturday morning, June 7, at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington.
Bishop Coyner has called both North and South Indiana Conferences to attend a special session scheduled to be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 4. This session will finalize amendments, elect committees and begin plans for the first combined Indiana Annual Conference session scheduled to be held at Ball State University in Muncie June 24-27, 2009.
Features of the new annual conference, which was two-years in design, will include:
Faith, Hope & Love
Faith, Hope and Love Week
July 20-26, 2008
Faith, Hope, & Love is a local outreach that happens for one week in July. Each day volunteers gather at the host church and sign up to serve in different jobs. Volunteers spend time together in worship and prayer and then head out for the day to extend loving hands to people in the community with projects and service such as:
• Rehabbing homes damaged by poverty or neglect
• Visiting with the elderly
• Distributing free bottled water
• Forming clergy into covenant groups and all 1,200 congregations into ministry clusters for the support and accountability to the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
• Dissolving the current 18 districts across Indiana and establishing five resource centers to support the work of 10 districts.
• Creating a new conference structure and establishing a new conference center in Indianapolis.
Currently, the North Indiana Conference is based in Marion. The South Indiana Conference is based in Bloomington.
The last such structural change of this magnitude to The United Methodist Church in Indiana came in 1968, when the former Methodist Church and former Evangelical United Brethren Church decided nationally to become The United Methodist Church.
The United Methodist Church is the largest Protestant denomination in Indiana with 1,200 congregations placed throughout the state's 92 counties. Methodists first established churches in Indiana in 1801. There are 225,000 United Methodists in Indiana.
• Cleaning up city streets
• Serving the public servants
• Washing cars
• Visiting children in the hospital.
3 of CUMC’s missions are committed to providing service opportunities:
• Second Starts
• Comfort Closet
• Kids Coats
Carmel United Methodist Church is hosting Faith, Hope, and Love at our church on Thursday, July 24. Bring your family and friends and meet at CUMC’s Family Life Center at 8:00 am to check in, sign up for a job, and

meet some new friends. We encourage families to use this perfect opportunity to serve together. There are jobs even young children would love to do like hand out watermelon & bottled water to show God’s love to others.
Registration is $10 and you receive a t-shirt.
Let’s BE THE CHURCH and go inspire our generation with faith, hope, and love for Jesus Christ!

Jr. High Workcamp Trip to West Virginia
Please keep the West Virginia team in your prayers as they are working, serving and having fun from July 20-26.

There are 18 youth and adults going on the trip led by Kevin Andrews (Jr. High Youth Minister).

During the day they will be helping local residents in rural West Virginia (coal mining country) with basic home repairs including painting, light carpentry, yardwork, and other odds and ends that these residents can’t do on their own and can’t afford to have done for them.
Most of these residents are elderly, widowed, or handicapped in some way and a little help can really light up their world.
The team will also have fun whitewater rafting, hanging out together, making new friends from around the country and writing care cards!

Kids Coats of Hamilton County
By Nancy VanderwallCoats have been coming in since last year’s distribution. Thank you to everyone who has been contributing coats for the November 2008 distribution.
The news has been full of concern about our nation’s economy. The number of children living in poverty in Indiana rose nearly 20 percent from 2000 to 2006, an increase of nearly five times the national rate.
The need for coats for children this winter is expected to be even greater than last year. As you know 2,000 coats were distributed in 3 hours last year. The Kids Coats Committee is hoping to collect over 4,000 coats for this year’s distribution. Your continuing support is needed for this to happen.
One way to get coats is to hold a mini coat drive. Are your children bored during summer vacation? Have them
hold a mini coat drive in their neighborhood. This is something the elementary and older children can do. Instructions for holding a mini coat drive are available on line at www.carmelumc.org
If you want to be a part of the Hamilton County Kids Coat Committee contact Nancy Vanderwall at 867-2492 or 691-6057 or nvander@earthlink.net.
CUMC’s children’s ministry invites children to know and follow Jesus Christ, supports families and equips parents and the CUMC family to be spirit-filled examples of Christ to our children.

July Mission of the Month"Lighten the Burden: Global HIV/ AIDS"
In July, the loose coin offering at CUMC will support the efforts of the United Methodist Church to help fight the global HIV and AIDS pandemic. Each United Methodist in Indiana is asked to pray for those living with HIV/ AIDS and give at least $2 toward the Global HIV/AIDS Fund. For our offering, 25% of our gifts will support AIDS ministries in Indiana and 75% will support programs globally. This 4-year initiative (started in 2004), has a goal to raise $8 million in United Methodist Churches across the United States.
Worldwide, more than 600,000 babies are born each year with AIDS which they contracted from their mother. These children are often abandoned in orphanages where no one will adopt them. The Global AIDS fund will be used to expand programs aimed at preventing mother to child transmission. Other strategies to reduce the spread of AIDS include awareness building, sharing information on risk avoidance and reduction, voluntary testing and counseling, care in the hospital and at home, treating opportunistic infections, providing food and treatment, and support of orphans.
Operation Classroom
We are collecting school supplies for children in impoverished countries of the world. Also, many of these children
lack some of the basic “sports” and “game” equipment (and clothing) that our children enjoy. A box in the Donation Center will be available during July and August. Contact Rick Chandler at 844-8450.
