Indianapolis is excited about the Super Bowl coming in February. But at CUMC we’re even more excited about our Souper Bowl of Caring contest. After all of the excitement of the Christmas season, the needs of local food pantries are even more acute. The shelves empty rapidly as hungry families come for assistance.

CUMC’s Children's Ministry and Youth Ministry have joined together to help stock the shelves again with the Souper Bowl of Caring 2012. Please bring in a non-perishable food item beginning January 1. On January 29 at 3:33 pm, the Jr. and Sr. High students and their parents will go to five Hamilton County food pantries to clean, paint, organize and stock shelves. Our food pantry will be one of the 5 and much of the food will stay right here at CUMC.

To encourage you to give generously, Scott McDermid and Aj Mildenberg are having a little contest. They both believe that their ministry area will collect the most non-perishable food. If Children’s Ministry wins, Scott will show his high school show choir video at Coffee Fellowship on Sunday Morning (think Glee from the 90’s). If Youth Ministry wins, Pastor Aj will exercise to a Zumba song during Coffee Fellowship. No matter which of our dedicated ministers wins (or loses), hungry families throughout Hamilton County will be helped.

Look for boxes throughout the building and “vote” with your food donations!

Faith Promise Missions

A Past to Remember…

In February, 2012, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the start of the Carmel UMC Food Pantry.

Twenty years ago, now-deceased member Jeanette Hole brought to the missions team the idea of a Food Pantry to provide some relief for those experiencing trying times. She had worked at one with their church in Texas before moving to Carmel. The missions team was supportive and moved forward.

The Food Pantry began in a small room, actually a closet on the southwest corner of the church near the elevator. Letters were written to churches in the area about the start of the Food Pantry, inviting them to participate by donation of food and/or by referring those who were in need. The missions team placed letters around the community at grocery stores, the Laundromat, etc. It opened operating one day a week. Clients were slow to appear but the support of the congregation of Carmel UMC was the opposite. They were supportive and generous with donations from the onset.

A Future to Pursue…

The heart for noticing the needs of others and starting a mission to serve was alive with Jeanette Hole and continues today. God continues to open our eyes to the needs of others and touch the hearts of folks to serve in new ways. The missions team is excited about three new opportunities in 2012:

1. Habitat for Humanity Build

Carmel UMC and other United Methodist Churches in Hamilton County have committed to a Habitat for Humanity build. We will share the cost of $70,000 and the work on a house in Home Place around March, 2012. There are so many opportunities available…prayer, construction work for the skilled, multiple other support tasks for the unskilled, meals to be provided, etc.

If interested, contact Richard Carriger (rcarriger@richardcarriger.com)

2. Mohawk Hills Apartment outreach

This ministry is being offered to reach out to children and adults in the Mohawk Hills Apartments

just down the street from CUMC. Already a gathering has been held for Halloween and Christmas with another slated for January, 2012. Plans are also in process to reach out to them around Vacation Bible School.

Shared leadership and helping hands with events will be needed for this ministry to begin. If interested, please contact Jana Miller (mjmiller2@sbcglobal.net)

3. Reaching out to Seniors in conjunction with Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County.

This ministry is being offered to seniors who may need a little assistance from time to time to help them stay in their homes. Help may be transportation to appointments, changing a light bulb, minor home repairs, light housekeeping and/ or social interaction.

Shared leadership and volunteers to be a support to Seniors is needed as well as referrals of Seniors who could use some support. If interested, please contact Jane Kelly (jkelley@bsu.edu).

The plan is in place for all of these new opportunities (to say nothing of those that we are already actively supporting). God has continually blessed our congregation, so we are continuing to grow in the ways that we may bless others.

I hope that this year, you will listen to the invitation of the theme for Faith Promise and walk through a door of opportunity to serve in another and new way. Step out of your comfort zone and your own schedule and see the possibilities that can come from even the smallest of task or relationship. God can do so much with so little!!!

“Walk Through the Doors of Opportunity”

Faith Promise Month calls special attention to the mission of the church to proclaim Jesus Christ. On Faith Promise Sunday (January 29), you will have the opportunity to make a “second-mile” covenant to missions.

Faith Promise Giving is…

• A commitment to missions for the coming year, a specific amount you trust God to supply through you, not necessarily from known sources.

• A covenant between you and God to give over and beyond your own ability, as God provides us our unlimited resources.

• An opportunity to designate your gift for a mission area of your choosing channeled through our church monthly, in a lump sum or as God provides.

• Giving 100% to mission programs locally, nationally and globally.

Faith Promise Giving is Not…

• Based on money you already have or are sure to receive.

• Your present giving to the church.

• A drain on our general budget receipts.

How Can I Support Missions at CUMC?

• Make a Faith Promise gift to monetarily support missions.

• Commit 3 more hours of your time than you did last year in serving in “hands-on” mission projects.

• Continue to include missions in your prayers

• Join the CUMC missions ministry team!

17 missions will be listed on Faith Promise pledge cards for 2012. You can pledge financial support for any or all of these 17 missions.

Serving our Soldiers

We recently received this letter from a Marine unit: Ma’am: On behalf of my Marines, I would like to say THANK YOU! We appreciate and enjoy receiving packages, letters/cards and well wishes from the fine Americans like yourself that support us and what we are doing here.

We work all day, every day out here. We are located in the mountains of southern Afghanistan. The winter is starting to kick in a little earlier than expected...which I am not a fan of! We have been here for about a month and a half and are expecting to be back in the states with family and friends in the spring. We are doing great things here and accomplishing our mission.

Donated items can be left at the IHN volunteer table on January 1, 8 or 15. Thank you for all you do to help make this mission possible year after year!

If you would like more information about how you can help with Interfaith Hospitality Network, contact Dale or Terri Hughes at dj.hughes@earthlink.net or 575-8598.

Please mark your calendar with the dates CUMC will host the IHN families during 2012: January 15-22, June 3-10, July 29-August 4, and October 14-21.

Green Bean Casserole Project

Here’s your chance to learn a little about the CUMC staff. The question was: If you were given $1000 with the stipulation that it had to be used to help others, what would you do with the money?

See if you can match the answer with the correct staff member!

1. I’d send it to the Parrot Rescue Center in Texarkana, Texas to support folks who give of their time, talents and financial resources to rescue parrots from bad environments and homes.

2. I would buy snow boots for boys to donate to next year’s Kids Coats. This year when I helped a family with 2 elementary boys there were no boots left for them.

3. I would split it in half, allocating half to Youth Ministry and half to the Henderson mission trip, to be used as scholarships for people who would like to participate but need financial support to do so.

4. I would use it to help build a school for the children of “Milagro De Dios” in El Salvador who have no ability to attend school unless they leave home and leave their families and parents behind.

5. I would give it to our new missions in 2012—Mohawk Outreach and Shepherd Center Community Caring because they are new and great opportunities to get more folks serving beyond themselves.

6. I would use it to help folks who are having trouble paying their utility bills this winter.

7. I would give it to White Family Services who offers faith-based training and support to foster families.

8. Because I believe with all of my heart that a short term mission trip to another country serving others gets a believer to focus less on themselves and more on trusting God, I would pick 2-4 people who would take the trip seriously and split the money among them to

make it possible for them financially to go on the trip. When we are in the middle of a culture we don't always understand and a language we do not speak we tend to rely on and look for God more than we do when we are comfortable, everything is familiar and convenient.

9. I would give some to colon cancer, The Heart Association, epilepsy and the rest to The World Race!

10. I would approach IHN (or similar program) and give them the funds to purchase sewing machines and employ someone (hopefully a volunteer) to teach the moms the basics of sewing and mending, giving them a means to make clothing "stretch" and make inexpensive gifts for their family and others. Each mom would be offered a sewing machine as they leave the program. Also, teach them to knit or crochet hats and scarves for their family and gifts, supplying them with needles and initial supply of yarn.

11. I would use the money to help provide a “water purification system” to a village in Haiti. These systems can provide safe water at nearly no cost and in the process provide chlorine bleach as a byproduct.

12. I would create an emergency fund to help people who are just a little short of money and need just a little help.

We’re Having Company!

Our first IHN rotation begins Sunday, January 15 and there are a few things we need to get ready. Of course we need people to drive the van, prepare meals, donate food items, and help with children's activities. We also are in need of the following new or gently used items: twin sheet sets, towel sets, children's DVD movies.

The casserole project for the Soup’s On Thanksgiving dinner at Robert's Park UMC was a great success! Thanks to everyone who made a casserole: Patti Payntor; Sue Noonan; Barb Hammer; Nancy LaFon; Pam Bollier; Angela Corley; Cheri Hammer, Mary Stephan, Natalie Lerner; Michele Zigon; Judy Stohler; Sherry Hamilton; Michelle King; Alice Voris; Alice Moore; Mary Jo Hoffman; Janet Haskett; Cindy Wardlow; Terri Hughes; Hilda Hadley; Peggy Utterback; Kathryn Kessler; Jennie Lin Francis; Julie Brown, Robin Wheeler; Mary Jane Coffing; Mitzi Rose; Shirley Bailey; Margie Nichols, Sandy Phillips, Mary Kelly. The thing that I really noticed was how nice it was to be in an entertainment area such as Branson that shared so freely the Christian message and also were so patriotically supportive of our troops (present and past).

My conclusion…I am sorry there were not more CUMC folks on the trip but I would go again in a heart beat!!! And now you can ask me about Branson any time and I will be happy to share.

Please put the date on your calendar NOW and invite a friend or another family member! I know many of you grandparents have the grandkids for a week in the summer so plan on this being the week! More information will follow about volunteering and registration, so keep your eyes toward the SKY!

On January 8, most of the Sunday School classes will have a short ceremony in their classrooms. We will be hanging a cross in each of them and dedicate the room and the learning to God. I am excited that the Sunday School kids, VBS kids and preschoolers will have a permanent reminder, the cross, of God’s eternal love and sacrifice for us all.

Communion is a special sacrament in the Methodist Church. On February 5 at 9:30 am in the Rec Room we will have a special class for Kindergarten to 5th grade kids and their parents to learn more about communion.
