HELLO ALL! It has been a delight to see so many new and returning faces around all of our campuses as we kicked off the new academic year. This issue is bursting with brilliant content to keep you entertained! Find out what your new elected Officers have been doing with their first couple of months in office, check out how RAG are transforming the fundraising game before discovering your completed 18/19 panel! If that isn’t enough to satisfy you we will be reintroducing you to our old Nightwise friend and hearing words of wisdom that a final year student would love to go back and tell herself during her first couple of weeks…there is just too much to mention here so get a snack and a drink and settle in!

HI GUYS! For those who I haven’t met yet, I’m Matt: your Community and Partnership Officer for the students union. In essence, my job revolves around the campuses and the general community of the university. This can involve anything from running events to make campus more social, to dealing with issues regarding the general facilities of the university. I also like to be as involved as possible in

So far this year, the officers have definitely been kept busy!

We came into office in July and since then; we have been training, planning, preparing and running from one site to another! Saying this though, all the stress has definitely been worth it. As a union, we ran, promoted and supported 247 events across our campuses throughout the welcome period, all of which were student ran, student supported, or student suggested. We had some events to show new students what the nightlife was like near their campuses as well as promoting the alternatives there are for students who perhaps don’t partake in that aspect of student culture.

Throughout Welcome, the other officers and I ran student life talks for all the new cohorts of students where we ran through the UCSU website (www.ucsu.me) and showed all the different support that is available to them, as well as promoting our groups, volunteering and student voice

spreading it out more across the campuses, and making students aware of how to stay safe when out after dark.

We now also have a campaign focused board in Calva bar on Fusehill Street which will have information of any of our events that will be running throughout the year.

WE NOW ALSO HAVE A CAMPAIGN FOCUSED BOARD IN CALVA BAR ON FUSEHILL STREET! opportunities, and everything else UCSU has to offer.

We have also recently launched our green impact award campaign which will be running from now till April. This campaign is run through the National Union of Students (NUS) and helps promote and award sustainable thinking within students’ unions. We have already made a good start in meeting the criteria, but we will be expanding our efforts to make the university community more eco-friendly. We have also been working a lot more on Nightwise this year,

One event that I’m really looking forward to planning is festive movie nights! Anyone who knows me, know that the festive season is my all-time favourite time of year. I will be playing winter-y music in the office from the 1st November onwards (much to some of my co-workers demise!). I’m planning on showing these on a few of the main sites, so if you want to get involved or have any suggestions of what movies we could show, please message me on facebook, tweet me, send me a snapchat, email me, send me a series of smoke signals, just anything to let me know.

OH and one more thing…

We now have microwaves on Fusehill Street, Brampton Road, and Lancaster! That’s right, you can now bring in food from home and reheat it if you are living on a student budget: just remember to wipe it down when you’re finished.

During the welcome period we relaunched Nightwise across all campuses. This campaign is to promote safety on night outs and to encourage safe sex. This ranges from making sure you pre-eat before you pre-drink to knowing where the nearest sexual health clinic is. We also work closely with the sexual health clinics around the different campus. Your safety is important and we want to try and keep you safe so we have we have little cards that include numbers of local taxi services and on–site campus security. You will see the little owl logo up and around campus and on social media with important messages and information.

The Pink Spots Project, launched last year, aims to provide

free sanitary products to students in need of them, whether you’re caught unprepared, out of hours or low on funds - which can be such is a bloody pain, (sorry for the terrible pun….) On the first Wednesday of every month we are holding packing parties, where you can come along to help us pack the little Pink Spots bags or simply donate products.

The idea behind this campaign is that should you ever need to access the free products, you can then carry the kindness on and donate products for another person when you are in the

There are a few campaigns just launched this year but the one I am facilitating is called ‘KINSHIP’ which is based on Cultural Diversity “Bringing people together” this has had support from BAME students and many others wanting to help support black and ethnic groups.

Due to my position and the experience I have had studying ‘Wildlife Media’ before becoming the Academic Officer I did a

lot of presenting which is my ambition. Alongside the course and my new job I have had lots of opportunities to speak on camera. I have done interviews on ITV borders, BBC radio Cumbria, speeches at graduations with small tasks with students doing shows on Wildlife, Mental health and Bed time stories. A huge range of different styles of presenting but it does not stop there. 15th October I got the opportunity to speak on the radio, discussing the diversity Cumbria now has and how much it has changed within University as well as the local community opening up a door to do some more presenting on the radio in the future.

Anyway enough about me, my aim over the next year is to provide networking events for students to establish contacts and meet new people, which will help support your walk through university and the education you will excel in. So to finish up here I would like to just give you a little advice given

Your Zoology Society fought the inclement weather to deliver a Moth Trapping event and lepidopterist Guy Broome came in to help with the identification. They’ve got some exciting guest lectures lined up so keep an eye out for those!

Your RAG Society have been busy bees – they’ve been up to all sorts,

awareness of issues surrounding domestic abuse and funds for the Freedom Project, a centre based in West Cumbria which provides practical and emotional help to those affected.

The campaign included a number of successful events, including the first Brampton Road Sleepout, and raised £674.36.

On the back of this success, they decided the next logical step was to form a new RAG Society because, as Society Chair Lizzie Grayson explains, “we want to raise money and awareness for local and national charities but we also want to help other students organise their own fundraisers and events”. And they’ve certainly hit the ground running! They’ve already arranged to mentor students taking the

Professional Skills module in Fusehill Street and organised a workshop at Brampton Road to support students who need to fundraise as part of their course. Somehow, they’re also finding time to act as the focal point for Children in Need at UoC – holding funds centrally and offering support to students with their own fundraisers.

Lizzie is also keen for other students to get involved “It’s a great thing to get involved in – we’ve done some amazing and unique events and, most importantly, we have so much fun! We’ve organised awesome things from pub quizzes, to the Brampton Road Sleepout and a Carlisle-wide Treasure Hunt. It is really important to us that students feel involved and like we’re their RAG Society – we had a student

They kicked off their Society Talks with a fantastic evening by James Hughes (Society Chairman) about his trip to see beavers in Scotland. They’ve also launched their Soundcloud space so you can catch up there if you missed it - just search UoC Wildlife Society.

Cumbria University Fencing Club will meet every Wednesday 4-5pm from the 14th November at the Fusehill Sports centre.

Come along and join us, kit provided. A joining fee of six pounds to become a member, the weekly session is free after that.

Coach Lucy Shardlow has been teaching students for over two years and is a qualified British Fencing coach and the University Fencing Officer.

“My main passion is competing and training in sabre, going all round the UK to fence in

various open competitions. I run the Yearly Cumberland Open Fencing competition at Austin Friars School, Carlisle on the 3rd and 4th of November. As well as sabre I coach younger children how to fence in foil. I wanted to create a university club to start coaching other students about this amazing sport. The main weapon is Sabre Lite at the club and is a lighter version of the traditional sabre weapon with easier rules and more game play.”

DEAR FIRST YEAR ME...

You are not alone. The first thing I will say is you are definitely not alone! Whether it is the girls from your cohort or a PGCE student you meet on placement, practically every trainee you meet has similar worries. You’ll share stories with them that will make you feel relieved and giggle.

Also, if you get chance watch your peers teach – do it. Don’t underestimate how much you can learn from each other.

Introverts make good teachers too. All your life, people have been telling you that you are shy, from school reports to colleagues, but, what they don’t understand is that being an introvert

THIS IS THE TIME TO STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE – SO DO IT. and shy are not the same thing. When it comes to being in school people might see you in the staff room, meetings or in the corridor being quiet and yes this will lead some of them to worry about your ‘teacher presence’. When you first get up in front of a whole class you will feel like a bit of a fraud as you act your way through the lesson – this is fine and you will feel like this a few more times yet (many more actually). But, by your final year you will start feeling more yourself at the front and find that your teaching style matches your personality. It’s going to take time to get this right but you are moving in the right direction.

This is the time to step out of your comfort zone – so do it.

Mentors and class teachers - in typical Shelby style you will worry about these relationships, for you it’s central to your training and for them it’s

IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING, ASK FOR HELP! DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE just one of their many responsibilities. But, remember they have chosen to take on this role so soak up everything they want to share with you. If you are struggling, ask for help! Don’t suffer in silence. You are going to have some fab mentors and class teachers. They will support you, give you honest feedback and be great examples for you to learn from. Some you will stay in contact with and continue to learn from.

I am writing this at the end of the first week of fourth year so you made it – yay! The past three years is a bit of a blur with both highs and lows so here is some advice…

SHELBY MERCER that?’, you won’t worry about including them on your plan, you’ll worry about briefing them. But, that is just daft. All the support staff you meet will want to help you do your best and help you however they can. Plus, you can learn so much from them: about behaviour management, lesson ideas and more.

Ignore the negativity. Unfortunately, not everyone you meet will have positive things to say about teaching. You will meet teachers who tell you to ‘get out now!’ and ask ‘why would you want to be a teacher?’, however, don’t let this put you off, recognise they have their reasons and carry on with a smile.

THESE MOMENTS WILL MAKE IT ALL WORTH IT. Highs and lows. As you work through university and placements, not everything will go to plan. And that is okay. This is the biggest challenge you have ever faced. Not every lesson will go to plan. You will cry and then you will cry about crying. This is nothing to be ashamed of; you care so much and will carry on working hard.

Plus, most importantly all of this will be outweighed by the incredible moments as a teacher: when a pupil is struggling and it just clicks; or helping a child practice using their AAC; or a thank you from a parent. These moments will make it all worth it.

10 MARATHONS IN 10 DAYS: Journey to the Brathay 10in10 #1 It’s been a few months since I received ‘that call’ from the lovely Alyson at Brathay…

A call, if I’m being honest, I’m not sure has sunk in even to this day. As I picked up the phone on that fateful afternoon to discover it was Aly, it didn’t quite register in my head that this was in fact an acceptance call; just a quick catch up maybe? After spending 5 minutes or so remising about memories shared as a work placement rehabber at the 2018 10in10, the news hit. Aly, in her typically enthusiastic but endearing (and what can only be described as a ‘Welsh Valley’ accent), went on to disclose the information I was up to that point in the phone call, blinded to… I was in- 10 marathons in 10 May days.

At that point I was taken back and questioned ‘Is this really a good thing? Am I really going to put myself through this during finals year? Some people actually apply to torture themselves, am I that guy!? Those thoughts and worries were swiftly whisked aside as the memories of Aly hugs, euphoric scenes, and inspirational runners coursed through my veins. What a challenge this

IS THIS REALLY A GOOD THING? AM I REALLY GOING TO PUT MYSELF THROUGH THIS DURING FINALS YEAR? would be! I duly accepted the offer forgetting the only marathon I’d run to that point was the last marathon of the 2018 10in10. One which I was (I say stupidly) inspired to do by the 2018 10in10ers.

I should probably give some background on what I was doing up in Brathay for the 10in10 20

in the first place and how I became so inspired to apply. Initially I was at Brathay as a student Sports Rehabilitator and Therapist gaining work placement hours. Our sole purpose was to support the 20 athletes at the 10in10 as they ran 10 marathons in 10 days. Although this became much, much more. It quickly became apparent

I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A CHANCE AT LIFE that although humanity has its unpleasantries, the human spirit and determination remained fruitful in the eyes of the 10in10ers… nothing like I’d witnessed before. This was more so heightened by the athlete I was coupled up with, who never failed to inspire, finishing every marathon of the 10 days within 3.33:00!!! (and no, it wasn't like a love island coupling up…).

The rumours say that his real name was 'Paul Ironman Brown' (See karate chop photo).

After 9 days of sharing stories, laughter and some emotional tears it was finally time for me to start my stupidly inspired first marathon!

At this point I should point out that I was eloquently... okay, easily persuaded to take part in this challenge by 2018 10in10ers. I thought to myself "If they can do 10, I can do 1". Obviously they became famous last words as I struggled round the course in 4.33:55, but most importantly every 10in10er finished!

Since being infested by what is commonly known as the marathon ‘bug’, I have run (or complained) around 5 more marathon courses, gaining friends in the form of glucose infused jelly babies and gradually chipping away at that sometimes elusive PB.

My new role is as Campus Community Developer for Brampton Road. This is brand new, which is really exciting, and I’ve been tasked with building a better relationship between UCSU and Brampton Road students.

I’m here to find out more about you all and help tailor UCSU to better represent and support you.

When did you start?

I started in this role during Welcome Week 2018, which was a bit hectic! I’ve held a couple of jobs with UCSU over the past few years though.

What did you do before working for UCSU? I worked for UCSU! This is my third role with the Students’ Union, so I must like it. I’m also a University of Cumbria graduate as I studied for my secondary science PGCE here.

What do you aim to do whilst being at Brampton Rd campus?

I’m aiming to get to know you all better, find out what would improve your student experience and then work out how UCSU might be able to help make that happen. Hopefully you guys will fill in the detail by telling me what you need.

What's your favourite thing about being a part of Brampton Rd? The students and the atmosphere you create. Without even leaving my desk, I can hear BAHPA students singing and see the student-run Biodiversity Area. Every time I go and walk around campus I find you doing something fascinating, and often filming it!

What's the best part of working for UCSU? Every day is different and I get to help students achieve goals they set for themselves. I’m constantly surprised, impressed and made very proud of you all.

If you could live a day in the life of anyone, who would you be and why?

Rather than a person I would be one of my rabbits, Bisto and Oxo. They live in the lap of luxury – sleeping all day and having food delivered to them. Naps and snacks are two of my favourite things so that sounds like heaven to me!

Do you have any student life hacks?

Bringing lunch to uni can save an absolute fortune. Plus, now UCSU have supplied microwaves for students to use you’re not restricted to boring sandwiches for a packed lunch!

What is your guilty pleasure?

I do own every season of Supernatural on DVD, and I have watched them all more than once… (the editor would like to point out that Supernatural is NOT a guilty pleasure and is a masterpiece of our time) Your favourite Christmas movie!?

It’s not Christmas until Emma Thompson has made me bawl and I’ve wondered how Andrew Lincoln ever looked that young. Love Actually has to be the best Christmas movie by a long shot!
