SPRING/ SUMMER 2023 LANTERNHOUSEARTS.ORG 01236 732 887 @CnauldTheatre
January is the start of a new year and we’re starting 2023 with a bumper new season and vision for the future. As featured on the front of this brochure, our in-house production will be Operation: LEGACY, a bold new work to reflect, represent and celebrate the voice of young people in Cumbernauld today.
In another theatre highlight, National Theatre of Scotland is back with a special new show Dear Billy to celebrate the Big Yin, Billy Connolly. We also welcome Surrogate Productions in residency to develop a combustive and searing play, Who Killed My Father.
If you’re into making new years’ resolutions, make one to see A Wee Journey. An unforgettable choreographed musical journey about migration and free movement, this stunning dance piece is one promise to yourself you won’t regret.
We’re also looking at new beginnings in our music programme, where the launch of Cumbernauld Folk Club is set to liven up Lanternhouse. Looking fondly on memories like these at our previous beloved home at the Cottage Theatre, our new monthly show will host a leading headliner with support from local musicians, with our bar open throughout each night. So, thig a-steach - come in and enjoy yourself!
Our music programme also sees Dunedin Consort, one of the world’s leading Baroque Ensembles, continue a unique residency at Lanternhouse. The musicians are offering a relaxed concert, an open rehearsal, cinema screenings and a specially devised piece for children, The Enchanted Snake. The residency includes a bespoke programme of instrumental workshops and classes for local schools to inspire an interest in classical music.
And here’s more to inspire your resolution. Our Take Part classes span drama, dance, sensory arts, crafting and circus performance – so there’s bound to be something to get your creativity flowing in the new year. You can also hear about Cumbernauld’s hidden stories from our very own People’s Theatre Company in Nights in ‘the Nauld’.
As you flick through the pages of this brochure, you will find cinema screenings throughout the season from the National Theatre and Royal Opera House, captured live from London to your doorstep. You can also catch additional theatre shows, documentaries, arena concerts and the latest blockbusters; and our weekly programme includes toddler-friendly and relaxed screenings. For the latest listings please check our website or stop by Lanternhouse for a cinema flyer.
…and there’s more. Our rollicking monthly comedy night Lanternhouse
Laughs is back with a bang, we’re hosting stellar tribute bands including McFleetwood, and you can slosh and swing in a Tea Dance with Jon Ritchie and That Swing Sensation. There is also plenty for wee ones to enjoy including shows from Puppet Animation Scotland and Visible Fictions. Whatever your taste, there’s something for you.
Finally, we’re trembling with excitement to announce the titles of our 2023 Christmas shows, which you can take a sneak peek at in the end of this brochure before they go on sale in January 2023. Until then, whether you’re seeing a show or screening, attending a class, creating your own work or stopping by to meet friends in the café/bar, you are always welcome at Lanternhouse. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Surrogate presents WHO KILLED MY FATHER
based on the book by Édouard Louis, translated by Lorin Stein and adapted and directed for stage by Nora Wardell.
Thu 27 & Fri 28 April 2023
7.30pm
Growing up gay in a small town in France, Édouard endured the violence and homophobia of his alcoholic, right-wing father, a factory worker. In 2000, his father suffered an accident which left him bed-bound and on morphine for the pain. Now, Édouard confronts his father, uncovering a startling connection between political decisions and his father’s broken body.
Who Killed My Father is an intimate declaration of love from son to father and a defiant call for social justice.
1968. The Barrowland Ballroom, jiving and twisting the night away. Rife with rhythm, romance and rumour. A Jive. A Jim. A John.
Bible John. Lurking in its smoky shadows was a serial killer. Glasgow’s young lovers dancing the night away. Courting love…and for some, courting danger. An intriguing new drama, set against the backdrop of the Bible John murders, with a soundtrack to the 60s…Cilla! Dusty! and so many more.

DEMENTIA THE MUSICAL
Saturday 6 May 2023
Agnes, James and Nancy are on trial for the crime of having dementia and not doing what they’re told. Can they beat the Rigid System and reclaim their lives and dignity?
DEMENTIA The Musical
7.30pm
Set in the not-too-distant future, the ‘British Bill of Rights’ has replaced the ‘European Convention on Human Rights’. It is being used by organisations and care homeowners to deny residents their rights to a family life by allowing the system to control what individuals with dementia can do, where they live, who can visit and when they can visit. The backdrop to the musical sees the three activists being brought to a care home in Dundee to face a tribunal that is accusing them of both not having capacity and of being troublemakers.
A funny and moving production, it tells the history of dementia activism with the voices of real Scottish people with lived experience shaping its story.

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL
Tue 23 May – Sat 27 May 7.30pm (Tue-Sat), 2.30pm (Sat)
Following the recent successes of Sunshine On Leith and The Secret Garden, Cumbernauld Musical Theatre Society returns with its new production of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5.
Set in the late 1970s this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic.
Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy - giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains ‘otherwise engaged’, the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?

Cantates Bibliques: ‘Judith’, ‘Rachel’ & ‘Susanne’
See for yourself what goes on behind the scenes of a new musical production in this open rehearsal of Dunedin Consort’s new production, Out of Her Mouth. Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre’s twelve biblical cantatas are extraordinary historical jewels. Written by a woman, about women, for women, they tell bold, unflinching tales about love, marriage, tragedy and adultery, each one a tiny opera in all but name. Produced in partnership with HERA and Mahogany Opera, Out of Her Mouth champions the ability of women to tell their own stories and narrate their own experiences — and invites you to listen.

MARTIN STEPHENSON
Sat 11 February 2023
One of the UK’s best-loved songwriter/musicians for over 35 years.
7.30pm
Martin’s must-see live performances are an exuberant tour-de-force combining heart-in-your-mouth intimacy with playful humour and warm self-deprecation.
Inspired by early Cure and the Brighton scene, Martin began his career as a busker aged 15 and developed his song-writing technique by firstly learning a few licks from a Spanish guitar book and repeated the process with Jazz, Blues, Country, Skiffle, Reggae etc. Eventually, this glorious collision of styles would become the trademark which Martin has carried through his career.
Martin formed his band The Daintees, who became a busking sensation and were signed by Kitchenware at around the same time as Prefab Sprout and Hurrah! The band and indeed Martin have always been known for their incredible range of styles, each album covering a multitude of genres, tempos and moods.

The influences for these three albums range between acoustic guitar pop to beautiful orchestral arrangements, and the string section is very much to the fore in the character of the band’s latest music.

R.E.M. –A PERFORMANCE FROM STIPE
Sat 20 May 2023
7.30pm
R.E.M. is one of the world’s most enigmatic bands. With a string of peerless albums; one eye on the underground and one eye on the soaring chorus; we will never see their like again.
Stipes brings you all the top songs from these icons including ‘Losing My Religion’, and ‘Man on the Moon’ and with all the atmosphere, attitude, emotion, and energy you’d expect. Stipe will provide the same cagey mix of attitude, poetry and idiosyncratic sound built around jangling guitars and hazy vocals of frontman Michael Stipe. Whether it’s playing major festivals or appearing on the One Show, performing for Michael Stipe himself, Stipe is the definitive R.E.M. tribute – a complete band, and encyclopaedic knowledge of the back catalogue. They bring R.E.M. to life on stage – the contrasts and the magic; that direct connection to the music. The boys from Athens’ legacy is in good hands.
