Transitioning to college life can be a bit overwhelming, and I want to make sure you have the tools you need to be successful throughout your college career and beyond.

Cumberland is a tight knit community, and we’re excited that you are now part of our family. This guide will help you through the process of becoming a CU student, and will be a resource for you long after the New Student Orientation days.

College is an important time in your life, and I encourage you to make the most of your time at CU. Get involved in campus events and organizations, connect with your professors and classmates, take on leadership roles and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself.

CU Email Cumberland uses email as the official and primary method of communication with students. As a student, you are expected to check your university email address frequently and respond to emails from professors and staff in a timely manner. Checking your email regularly will also ensure that you do not miss any important campus announcements or events.

CU Alerts Effective and timely communication during a campus emergency is a priority for students, faculty, and staff.

The Cumberland App is designed to notify our campus community about emergencies related to the university.

To make sure you receive all future alerts, you must download the Cumberland App to your smartphone or tablet and login using your Cumberland email address and password.

Phoenix News Phoenix News is a newsletter sent to your Cumberland email. It contains news, announcements and special offers for our students. It is managed by the Office of Student Life and user-generated, so you can submit your own student group news and events by emailing them to phoenixnews@cumberland.edu.

The Cumberland Mascot

The Phoenix is our enduring symbol to rise. In 1864 the original Memorial Hall was burned to the ground during the Civil War. In the ashes and ruins, a Cumberland student wrote the latin phrase “resergum” which translates to “I shall rise.” Our mascot is a reminder of Cumberland’s ability to rise above challenges, like the Phoenix from the ashes.

The Convocation ceremony is a ritual signaling the beginning of your college career, similar to how Commencement ceremony serves as a ritual to mark the completion of your college career. You’ll hear welcoming messages and advice from university administrators, including the President, Provost and President of the Student Government Association.

Every year at the Convocation ceremony, students, faculty and staff are asked to write down any fears or concerns they have about the upcoming semester, and are then asked to commit them to the flame in the fire pit. In doing this, we believe we are stronger than the trials we may face and will rise to meet our greatest potential.

Colloquium

Each fall, CU hosts an annual research colloquium for students, faculty and staff to share their academic research on a wide variety of topics. This event is a great opportunity for you to experience presenting on a topic you’re passionate about as well as hear about a variety of topics from surviving a rattlesnake bite to wedding planning.

Homecoming

For many schools, Homecoming is a savored tradition, and Cumberland is no different. Each fall, students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and community members gather to attend the Homecoming football game and see the crowning of the Homecoming Court. The weekend is full of activities and opportunities to show your CU pride.

Clock Tower

The Clock Tower is the iconic tower atop Memorial Hall, featuring a clock on each of its 12 CU Cares - Giving Back four sides. Baird Chapel is a cherished space in Memorial Hall. From the original hand-painted rice paper mural on the ceiling to the beautiful stained glass window above the pipe organ, this room holds a special place in CU history. Baird Chapel has also been used for several movies and music videos, including Taylor Swift's Love Story video.

Wilson County Fair

Before every home football game, our Phoenix Marching Band leads a parade of students and CU fans to Nokes-Lasater Field to cheer them on to victory.

Each fall, Lebanon hosts the Wilson County Fair, the largest county fair in the state. The fair is a must-see event, and usually occurs the week before school starts. During Welcome Week each year CU takes students to the fair for a night of rides, games, food and fun.

Phoenix Wing Student Mural

The Phoenix Wings Student Mural was painted by Allie Garcia, a CU student who wanted to leave something special for all students to enjoy. It is a popular photo spot on campus, and on the firstyear checklist, so make sure to stop by the Mitchell Student Center and strike a pose before the year is over.

University Finances 101 Routinely check your student email account for financial aid and registration confirmation reminders.

You must pay your tuition and confirm your schedule each semester before beginning classes. It is your responsibility to make sure it is paid and confirmed by the deadline or your schedule will be cancelled.

Be sure to schedule an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to review and accept your financial aid award.

Federal Grants and Loans

There are several forms of federal aid available to you.

Grants do not generally require repayment. Loans do require repayment with interest six months after leaving college. To learn what you can receive, submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid at FAFSA.gov.

Academic Scholarships

Academic scholarships may be awarded to qualified students who have excelled in their previous academic work. Awards are based on your GPA and standardized test scores. Endowed Scholarships

Cumberland has over 100 endowed and annual scholarships established by dedicated alumni and friends. You can easily apply for these scholarships by completing a simple form on our website at www.cumberland.edu/scholarships/.

Performance Scholarships

Performance scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the coach or program director based on proven performance and future potential. You can earn a scholarship for your participation in either athletics or any of our fine arts programs. Tennessee Promise

Cumberland University accepts more Tennessee Promise students than any other four-year institution in the state. Our students who are TN residents have the opportunity to fund the first two years of their college experience through the TN Promise by enrolling in an associate degree program which smoothly transitions into one of our many bachelor’s degree programs. For more information about using the TN Promise Scholarship Program, contact The Office of Financial Aid. Outside Scholarships

Scholarship searches can be conducted using many different resources. Here are a few: FAST WEB, College Board Scholarship Search, Scholarship America, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Other places to check include your local library, local churches, local organizations (i.e., ELKS, VFW, American Legion), search engines and the CU financial aid office.

Federal Work Study

Work study is a program jointly funded by the university and the Federal Government. It is intended to encourage and promote the part-time employment of students with demonstrated financial need, as well as assist the university and its surrounding community. Students work part-time jobs on or off campus and earn between $8.00 to $12.00 per hour. The amount of money a student earns may be applied toward his/her charges at the university. Receipt of work study funds is contingent upon the fulfillment of the assigned work responsibilities. Due to funding restrictions, there is no guarantee that FWS will be awarded to all eligible students. Restrictions: Maintain 2.00 cumulative GPA. Veterans Educational Benefits

CU is excited to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which offers additional benefits to qualifying veterans. If you are a veteran, your first step in receiving educational benefits for your military service is to apply through the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veteran's Online Application (VONAPP) allows you to submit your request online.

Student eligibility for VA education benefits is determined solely by the Department of Veterans Affairs. To inquire about eligibility for G.I. Bill education benefits as a veteran or service member, please call 888-442- 4551 or visit this website at benefits.va.gov/gibill.

Pride Shop

Regardless if you’re looking for a fast and convenient meal or a chance to relax and meet a friend, you have options to enjoy a meal on campus.

A meal plan is included for all CU students who live on campus and commuter students have the option to purchase a meal plan. The Phillip's Dining Hall features six different food stations; soup and salad bar, sandwich/wrap bar, specialty bar, hot bar, grill bar and a self-serve breakfast and dessert bar. The Barry Bistro is a smaller dining option that offers Papa John's Pizza and Mondo's Subs, and features CU students' original artwork.

The CU Pride Shop is the university's official licensed retailer of Cumberland University apparel and gear. The shop is located in the Vise Library and is open Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

You can stop by the store or shop online to pick up your Phoenix game day gear. It’s time to rise!

Post Office Located on the ground floor of the Mitchell Student Center, the CU Post Office provides students with essential mail services. You can receive a PO box, send outgoing mail and pickup packages without ever having to leave campus.

Book Store The pop-up campus bookstore is located in the Mitchell Student Center, below the Phillip’s Dining Hall. The bookstore is open at the beginning and end of each semester and rental orders can be placed online and either shipped to your home, or picked up on campus. Your professors will let the bookstore know which books are required for each course, so you’ll only need to know your course schedule to order your books.

Computer Labs & Printing The Vise Library, Labry Hall and the Learning and Career Commons (LCC) all feature computer labs that can be used on campus. These labs are available to students for studying and completing assignments. CU also offers students free printing each semester up to 500 copies. You can use your student ID number to access all of the printing stations which are located in the Vise Library, Labry Hall and the LCC.

What is Academic Advising?

Your academic advisor is here to help you recognize your skills, strengths and interests as they relate to your intellectual and career goals. They are your guide for navigating the ins and outs of Cumberland University’s degree requirements and campus resources. You should meet with your advisor at least once each semester to discuss your short and longterm goals, and when considering changes that may affect your academic career or if you are experiencing any academic difficulties. Bottom line - they’re here to help you succeed!

Academic Planning Know your requirements. Each major has a unique set of requirements for you to reach the minimum credits to obtain your degree. Many upper level courses require prerequisite courses you must complete prior to enrollment. Check with your advisor to ensure you are on track.

Program of Study Program of study is a federal requirement that only allows courses that count toward a student’s program of study (declared major/minor) be considered when determining federal financial aid eligibility. If you have questions regarding this requirement and eligible courses for your program, make sure to consult with your advisor.

There are a handful of forms you will utilize during your time as a CU student. From adding or dropping a course to filling out your intent to graduate form, you can find all the necessary academic forms in one convenient place.

What is it?

CAMS is your online student portal that allows you to register for classes, view your class schedule, check your grades, review your ledger and pay your balance. It is a tool you will use often. What is it?

Canvas is an online course management tool that professors will utilize to display course related content. What is it?

The Cumberland App is available on all smartphones and tablets and is used as a resource for all things CU. In addition to receiving important campus updates, the app is also used for attendance to scan into various events for class credit and extra credit. Office of Student Success

The Office of Student Success oversees all of the tutoring and Writing Center services to help you succeed in every subject. Whether you prefer to study one-on-one with a qualified tutor or enjoy a group setting, the Office of Student Success will help you find what works for you. The Office of Student Success also offers several group tutoring labs such as Math Lab and Science Lab. These tutoring labs are open to all students on a walk-in basis. What is it?

The Writing Center strives to help students improve their academic writing, focusing on elements like structure, syntax, and content while abiding by proper MLA, APA, and Chicago guidelines. Additionally, the office provides assistance with research, helping students locate scholarly, academic information while utilizing the library’s resources.

The center encourages walk-ins but asks that you come prepared with your student ID, a hardcopy of the essay that needs revision, and the prompt that the professor provides. Career Services and Internships

What is it?

The Office of Career Services and Internships supports students and alumni in the development and achievement of career decisions and goals. The office offers self-assessment and career planning, internship and job postings, resume and cover letter review, graduate school preparation and career workshops.

The Vise Library The Vise Library was built in 1989. The library features several conference rooms, private study rooms, and a variety of meeting spaces where students can study and work together.

The library is home to the Castle Heights

Military Academy exhibit and the Papers of Martin Van Buren Project. It also features a grab and go snack shop and the campus Pride Shop where you can purchase all your CU apparel and gear.

Library Resources The library features 40,000+ volumes plus an additional 45,000 full-text ebooks. Students have access to an inter-library service where you can check out books from other libraries for free. There's even an educational resource room available for education majors.

The library features a computer lab and individual computer stations for studying and completing assignments. CU offers students free printing each semester up to 500 copies.

Counseling Services All counseling services are offered free of charge to registered and enrolled Cumberland University students.

CU’s Counseling Center staff view counseling as another form of learning where students can learn effective means of resolving concerns and developing strategies for achieving personal and professional goals. Counseling can assist those who are experiencing various personal problems and difficulties. Some of the concerns commonly addressed include adjustment to college, relationships, stress, depression, loneliness, anxiety, and selfesteem. If student needs are better served by other resources, referrals will be made to an appropriate community resource.

Over 500 students call CU’s campus home. Our campus features five residence halls that offer a variety of living options and experiences to support you throughout your academic career. Residential students enjoy walking to class, academic support services, dining, and athletics facilities. Choosing to live on campus offers you a traditional college experience that is all-inclusive, convenient and fun.

We’re a small campus with a BIG community. Living on campus places you right in the middle of student life activities. It makes it easy to connect with your friends and participate in student organizations, honor societies, and interest groups. As a resident, you’ll be able to make an impact on campus as a leader and play a part in shaping the CU experience for all our students.

Keys to Success for Living On Campus

Your experience is what you make it. Get to know your roommate, hall mates and get involved in campus life.

Get to know your RA; they are a great resource for you and are here to help Be familiar with the Residence Life Policies, including what you can and can’t bring.

Know and utilize all the resources available to you as a CU student - these can be found throughout this guide.

Stay safe. CU has 24/7 security on campus.

Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Save the number for campus security (615-476-3061) in your phone.

Even though you live just down the road, we want CU to be a place where you feel at home. There are great spots for meeting new friends and resources available to help you make the most of your college experience.

Where to park: We have several designated parking areas around campus. Be sure to register your vehicle with Residence Life located in Labry Hall.

Where to hang: Campus is your space. We invite you to enjoy it all!

Visit the Labry Atrium, the Learning and Career Commons, the Phoenix Nest or Lounge or the Vise Library for space to study, connect with friends or relax after class.
