WELCOME St Helens Library Service is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation - one of only six library Services in the country!

Cultural Hubs is a stimulating arts in libraries project that allows us to bring a broad range of arts events into all St Helens Libraries. We welcome everyone to join us and take part in our varied programme. We have theatre shows and performances, art installations and community events. Join us on your own or with friends or family. We really look forward to welcoming you.

Most of our arts events and activities in this Spring/Summer programme are Family Friendly! Please read about the events to find a match for you and your family and don’t forget that everyone is welcome, so take your pick and we’ll see you there!

Free tickets are available for carers and support workers.

Alef Trust Beacon Building Arts On Prescription Creative Alternatives Programme for Adults

Artists Together is a forum for artists based or working in St Helens.

Launched at the end of November with British artist Mark Storor at the helm, the friendly group is open to all artists from any creative discipline. Come along and join the conversations and help shape the forum to your needs. We currently meet together once a month with additional sessions planned in between to suit creative demand!

VALLEY BRASS

SHOW TUNES

Featuring music from Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman to Star Wars and Harry Potter, this is a musical evening of the highest quality. Sit back and enjoy a showstopping, foot tapping concert from the North West Brass Band Champions.

Valley Brass Band is based in Haydock, St Helens. They are a 2nd section band and their aim is to encourage musical interest and develop talent in all age groups and abilities.

This concert is the culmination of a Cultural Hubs Voluntary Arts Commission.

Get Creative is a celebration of everything creative. From 11th - 19th May, as part of the Get Creative Festival, St Helens Libraries will offer the opportunity to explore art and craft activities that regularly take place at your local library.

Adults and children are invited to sample a variety of free activities across St Helens including food art, salt dough figurines, card making, ink stamping, knitting, crocheting and a community mosaic piece based on Stephenson’s Rocket.

2019 marks 190 years since the Rainhill Trials. To celebrate this occasion Rainhill village will be a hub of exciting activity over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Rainhill Library will be taking part in the celebrations and will host 2 exciting arts activities.

Travels With ‘Flora Dunkhill’

Victorian librarian Flora Dunkhill would like both your company and assistance.

She’s heard about the Rainhill Trials and is excited about the new horizons and travel possibilities that have opened up for her.

Come and tell her about the places you have visited and where she should add to her travel itinerary! Choo, Choo :)

The Rocket Re-Imagined

Travel back to 1829 via virtual reality (VR) to experience the sight and sound of the early steam age as Stephenson’s Rocket is digitally brought back to life.

Also on display at the library will be artefacts and exhibitions and there will also be children’s craft activities to take part in.

St Helens’ award-winning Dream sculpture turns 10 years old this summer, and to celebrate this milestone everyone is invited to attend an evening of community-focused cultural events themed around the iconic public artwork.

Last summer, people from the St Helens refugee, asylum seeker and resettlement community, explored and interpreted the St Helens local archives with artists Claire Weetman and Rebecca Ainsworth, bringing together experiences and ideas to create a new unique artwork.

The multi-layered artwork features photographic and printed collages, images copied from St Helens Community Archive, plus new imagery provided by the project participants.

The original artwork is situated at the drop in cafe run by charity ‘Our Warm Welcome’ at Pocket Nook Technology Campus.

On display here is a photographic print of the original layered artwork. The original artwork contains many drawers where new photographs and objects can be added as people from refugee backgrounds arrive, pass through or settle in St Helens.

The year is 2069 (100 years since the first moon landing) and Britain is running out of ‘space’ and the moon is the only place left... but what’s it going to be like to live on the moon?

ARTS AMBASSADORS EXHIBITION Over the last few months, a group of young people from St Helens have been working with artist Paul Harfleet to create a very special exhibition. Inspired

by Paul’s book, Pansy Boy, the students are leading creative workshops in their schools to create an exhibition of artwork, which they will curate and install themselves. The students will all achieve a Bronze Arts Award as part of this project.

The schools involved in this project are: St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic High, Holy Cross Primary, Grange Valley Primary, Allanson Street Primary and Sutton Oak Primary.

A nationwide competition is held to produce The Definitive Guide to Intergalactic Living.

The winners of the competition receive a rent free, fully furnished luxury crater on the moon!

So enter our three intrepid Sci-Fi geeks; Gordon, Kirk and Albert. Throughout their lives they have been crowded out and ridiculed by the ‘popular kids’ for their love of all things Sci-Fi. But now they have a chance to put their expertise to good use. So give them ‘space’ as they look to ‘chase’ their dreams!

PORTALS A Portal has opened...

A mysterious glowing disc appears in Haydock Library, inviting people to play.

PORTALS is a mesmerising interactive experience for all ages and abilities, allowing users to intuitively generate complex patterns through movement and colour.

Portals Episode One: 1.00pm - 6.00pm.

If you are brave enough to risk the threat of being sucked into another dimension, pop along and experiment with the Portal through movement and interaction.

Portals Episode Two: 7.00pm. Digital artist Sam Meech and musician Raz Ullah present a special performance in surround sound, using coloured lasers to generate video that trigger a sweeping synth soundscape.

Ian Hall - LIVERPOOL SOUND AND VISION The two of them are going camping to get away from everything. To have some quality time. Alfie finds it hard to talk, Anna does too.

They share stories about dragons - scary ones, sulky ones, angry ones - and discover that emotions, like dragons, are tricky beasts. Sometimes they need to be tamed, sometimes they need to be released.

When Another Dragon Roars fuses Altered Scale Theatre’s outstanding puppetry with Petite Ullaloom’s distinctive storytelling, promising a memorable experience for children and the young at heart!

Then Creative Alternatives might just be for you...

Creative Alternatives is an award-winning arts and wellbeing programme for residents of St Helens experiencing stress, anxiety &/or depression.

You can take part in Creative Alternatives if you are:

We offer a programme of visual arts and expressive writing activities that explore creative ways that can help you relax, de-stress and improve your confidence. Whilst creativity is at the heart of what we do, the emphasis is on enjoying yourself, meeting new people and having a safe space where you won’t be judged.

Once referred on to the programme you can take part in a weekly group for up to 12 weeks.

Our workshops are led by trained artists who will support and guide you using a variety of artistic techniques, creating a relaxing atmosphere with friendly faces and a time that’s just about you.

Activities include a combination of writing for wellbeing, mixed media art, 3D modelling, textiles and mindfulness.

Creative Alternatives is part of the Cultural Hubs programme, so in addition to the weekly group we offer organised outings and free tickets for some of the fantastic events that are listed in the brochure. Along with this, we also run stand-alone mindfulness based stress reduction workshops too, so there are lots of positive reasons to get involved!
