MESSAGE FROM COUNCIL LEADERSHIP Strategy, change, evolution—three words that define this monumental year of work for the Cultural Council. As we celebrate our 40th year of supporting the arts in Palm Beach County, it’s important to review the past year (FY2017) as a time of unparalleled growth, and set our sights on the future. The Council’s five-year strategic plan was ideated, developed and approved by the board of directors this fiscal year, which is an amazing accomplishment for any organization. The plan includes nine new change strategies such as increased engagement with the business sector and focused support of the Cultural Coalition, a group of cultural executives organized to work together around important issues and challenges. The Plan is now in place and we’re excited to grow even more over the next five years. In a year that debuted new events such as the Spotlight Luncheon featuring artist and songwriter Bernie Taupin, we also launched a redesigned art&culture magazine, celebrated our 12th year of Culture & Cocktails, and administered over $4.2 million in grants to various cultural organizations and artists throughout the county. Your support enables us to do great things for the quality of life and economic prosperity of Palm Beach County. We look forward to celebrating our 40th anniversary with you!

GRANTS “The Cultural Council is hugely helpful in so many ways: advocacy, grant availability and assistance, training programs, etc.” – Mary Csar, Executive Director, Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum

In 1982, the Cultural Council led the Tourist Development Tax Campaign for the Arts to distribute a portion of Palm Beach County’s hotel tax revenue (“bed tax”) to cultural organizations through grant programs. Since then, the taxes have contributed nearly $100 million in funds to county cultural organizations for promotion, advertising, public relations and more. It cannot be overstated how critical these funds are to Palm Beach County as a cultural destination, and to the organizations who depend on this source of income every year. With these funds, the cultural sector will continue to grow. As a result, increased visitation to the cultural organizations leads to more tax collected, a better quality of life and a thriving local economy. The Council administers three county-funded grant programs. Two are supported by bed tax revenue, and one is funded by ad valorem tax. The Tourist Development Fund for Major Institutions (Category B) and The Tourist Development Fund for Mid-Sized Institutions (Category C-II) are designed to support tourism efforts by funding marketing and program expenses associated with performances, exhibitions and cultural events. The Cultural Development Fund for Small and Emerging Cultural Organizations (Category C-I) is designed to preserve cultural heritages and traditions through the arts, significantly advance cultural opportunities for children and youth, and to create opportunities for Palm Beach County residents to experience culturally diverse, innovative and excellent cultural programs and projects.

About the Cover Artist: Born in the Netherlands but growing up in southern Indiana, Dennis Bertram’s early interest in art was sidetracked for an academic career in health care. He returned to art in the late 1990s, taking studio courses at Buffalo State College and the Steve Carpenter Art Center in Rochester, New York. He is best known for his abstract oil paintings with their complex imagery consisting of multivarious, imaginative architectonic structures. He exhibits with the Buffalo Society of Artists, Buffalo Niagara Art Association and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County.
