A Significant Year Ahead for the Canada-UK Chamber.

As we approach 2025, the Canada-UK Chamber is poised to celebrate over a century of dedicated service in fostering the bilateral relationship between Canada and the UK. This milestone not only highlights our historical contributions but also emphasizes our commitment to leveraging the opportunities presented by the Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement, which offers preferential market access for businesses in both countries.

In light of the rising geopolitical conflicts and tensions, it is imperative that we continue to cherish and nurture the ‘special’ relationship between Canada and the UK. Our shared history and common values serve as a foundation for our ongoing collaboration.

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to my recent predecessors, Bill Smith and Matthew Moth, for their unwavering loyalty, support, and tireless dedication during their tenures as Presidents of the Chamber. Their leadership has guided us through the challenges posed by Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost of living crisis, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Under their stewardship, the Chamber has successfully renewed and reaffirmed its strategic focus on the priorities that matter most to our members. Thanks to their efforts, along with those of the Board and Secretariat, we enter our 104th year in a strong position.

As we step into 2025, we are proud to report near-record membership levels and a robust financial standing. We have successfully hosted over 50 events and welcomed distinguished guests, including Ralph Goodale, Canada’s High Commissioner to the UK; Tiff Macklem, Governor of the Bank of Canada; the Hon. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador; and the Rt Hon. Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, Minister of State at the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero, among many other prominent business leaders. Our operations now span a record 14 forums, and we have made significant strides in our digital transformation, supported by an energetic Secretariat team eager to engage with our members.

With the backing of our strategic partners, including the Canadian and British High Commissions, Canadian provinces in the UK, and the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, the Chamber is wellpositioned to capitalize on the growing bilateral trade and investment relationship in the coming year and beyond. Strengthening this relationship is central to our mission, and our programming reflects this commitment.

We recognize the importance of building upon the strong foundation we have established, continuously evolving the Chamber to meet the needs of our members while attracting new members seeking to expand their networks.

I look forward to the opportunity to network with you in the coming year and to further deepen our bilateral connections.

Air Transat’s Premium Economy, Club Class

Our earliest recorded member joined us in May 1921 when Sir George McLaren Brown, KBE ( 1921-1923 ) was at our helm and we were known as the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain. Sir George was born in Ontario, educated in England, and maintained strong bilateral connections throughout his life, working most of his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Over a century later as the Canada-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, we find ourselves one of the oldest of the 40+ bilateral chambers in the UK playing a leading role amongst them, chairing the Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce. Our members include senior representatives and leaders from some of Canada and the UK’s most recognisable brands, and our focus is on assisting them develop and deepen their trade and investment connections in person or electronically. Despite geopolitical challenges, changing trading and investment realities, disruption caused by Covid19, cost of living and inflationary challenges, demand for our business services remains as strong as ever. We continue to deliver very busy annual event programmes for our members and contacts, some on-line and many face-to-face, shaped by our members, encouraging them to network, showcase their products and services, and learn from each other’s experiences.

The UK is still Canada’s biggest trading partner in Europe, and both countries enjoy significant two-way investment flows. We have observed many Canadian success stories in the UK, and UK success stories in Canada over the last century and in recent years such as: SNC Lavalin’s C$3.6bn acquisition of WS Atkins; Avison Young acquiring GVA; Brookfield and Canadian pension plans investing significantly in UK’s infrastructure projects such as in UK offshore wind farms as well as a leading international schools organisation Nord Anglia Education; Starlight Investments £500m acquisition of three projects in Manchester and Basildon in Essex; and even Kiefer Sutherland launching a Canadian whisky in the UK. Over 700 UK firms also have a presence in, and contribute to the economic growth of Canada. Recent UK successes in Canada include: AstraZeneca buying Fusion Pharmaceuticals for £1.9bn; the Government of Canada awarding C$18.1m from its Low Carbon Economy Fund to Rio Tinto to support the decarbonisation of iron ore processing in Labrador West; Rolls Royce and BAE Systems signing contracts for the manufacture of their Mission Bay Handling System in Ontario; Power infrastructure developer VivoPower International merging with Canada’s Future Automotive Solutions and Technologies to create a $1.13bn combined company; Renold buying Canadian Conveyor Biz for $31.4m; finance automation firm Tipalti expanding in Canada; and Pret A Manger opening in Toronto.

Post-Covid we have witnessed significant growth in membership activity with Charter and Group membership tiers at all-time highs, and our numbers of SME and Start Up members continuing to hold up well. We have responded to feedback for more B2B opportunities by expanding our forums to fourteen including: AgriFood; Creative Industries & Education; DEI; Energy; Financial Services; FinTech; Health & Life Sciences; Infrastructure & Property; International Trade; Legal & Tax; Resources; SME; Sustainability and Technology forums.

We host and co-host over 50 events annually whether on line or in person, with over 4,000 registrants, including regular New Member & Member Engagement events. Our events offer quality audiences and a networking platform for business leaders, commentators, economists, entrepreneurs, educators and politicians from a wide range of backgrounds from the UK and Canada.

Membership offers access to over 300 member organisations in this Directory, over 2,000 member contacts, 6,200+ non-member organisations and over 8,000 other contacts via our Secretariat, all of whom are potential customers and/or suppliers. As a member you are encouraged to take advantage of these benefits.

Wishing you asuccessful and productive networking year ahead.

Congratulations to the Canada‑UK Chamber of Commerce on its 100th anniversary!

Canadian High Commissioner to the UK’s Foreword

It is with great appreciation for the hard work of our exporters and investors that I provide this introduction to this edition of the Directory of Members published by the Canada-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce (CUKCC ). An extensive list of successes to be highlighted is to be expected in a bilateral economic relationship as impressive as the one our two countries share. The value of that relationship is now estimated at some CAD$480 billion.

More than 3,500 Canadian companies export goods to the U.K. every year, with over 93% of them being small and medium-sized enterprises. The dollar value of goods and services that move back-and-forth between us totals CAD$47.8 billion (almost £27 billion). Our trade is roughly in balance, still growing, and 99% quota and duty free.

The U.K. also remains Canada’s second largest source of Foreign Direct Investment and our second largest destination for Canadian Direct Investment Abroad (excluding offshore financial centres) . More than a thousand British affiliates operate in Canada, employing over 155,000 Canadians, while Canadian investors in the U.K. create jobs for 125,000 Britons in railways, ports, airports, utilities, energy generation and distribution, and multiple other sectors.

Our respective government agencies, universities, research organizations and research-intensive companies are finding more and more opportunities to work closely together in areas such as cleantech, agrifood, biotechnology, quantum, AI, cyber, and much more. The U.K. is Canada’s second most important research partner globally, with more than 12,300 co-authored papers published per year between British and Canadian researchers.

Organizations across a wide range of industries – such as Babcock International Group (a global defence, aerospace and security company ) , Lynn & Liana Designs (a family SME producing handcrafted serveware) , and VIDO (a University of Saskatchewan-based organization that is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals) – have found success by engaging in both the Canadian and British marketplace.

My sincere thanks to our partners at the CUKCC. As one of Europe’s oldest and largest bilateral chambers, the CUKCC is a highly valued partner of the High Commission of Canada, and of the businesses they support and represent. With an impressive network of member organizations of all sizes, the CUKCC is a key component of the bilateral economic relationship – by making introductions and referrals, offering matchmaking and branding opportunities, facilitating dialogue and discussion, communication and understanding. I am grateful to the CUKCC for this very useful work.

Warmest regards,

High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom

British High Commission to Canada Foreword

2024 was an eventful year – globally, and for the UK in Canada Network. We saw cost of living challenges and ongoing conflicts contribute to a sense of unpredictability that transcended borders. Amid these tribulations, we witnessed significant change come in the form of a record year for elections world-wide. As you’ll know, the UK elected a new government in July, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, while Canadians are set to take to the polls for their own federal election in 2025.

Even throughout periods of change, some things remain consistent. This year brought forth an abundance of opportunities for our network to celebrate the close and enduring partnership that exists between the United Kingdom and Canada, beginning with a move into our brand-new High Commission in Ottawa – now the greenest diplomatic building in the UK’s global network and just steps across the road from our neighbours at Global Affairs Canada. In August, we welcomed the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force’s Aerobatic Display Team, for a thrilling five-week tour of Eastern Canada in celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s centennial. The tour served as a valuable platform to promote STEM and discuss sustainable aviation innovation, while September offered up the chance to celebrate 31 films with British connections that were screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

This year also presented brilliant new opportunities for progress on both sides of the Atlantic. The UK’s new government came armed with an ambitious growth agenda, sparking a visit to Toronto from Chancellor Rachel Reeves to meet with financial and tech CEOs over the summer, as well as an International Investment Summit hosted in London in October that secured £63 billion of private investment.

We wrap up 2024 on a high note with the UK’s official accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP ) on 15 December. The free trade area, which includes Canada, now spans five continents and almost 600 million people, and means more than 99% of current UK goods exports to CPTPP members will be tariff-free – good news for business exports and for economic growth. As Canada prepares to take over the G7 presidency in 2025, the stage is set for more cooperation that builds on the UK and Canada’s shared accomplishments across numerous sectors this year. Our team at the British High Commission in Ottawa and across our four consulates in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver look forward to working with members of the Chamber in 2025 to support business and industry groups, further deepening the already-strong business and people links between our two countries.

Oliver Wyman is a management consulting firm combining deep industry knowledge with specialized expertise to help clients optimize their business, improve operations and accelerate performance.

Since our beginnings in 1921 as “The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain,” our objective has been consistent: to co-ordinate activities between Canada and the UK.

In 1927 our Chamber was incorporated as a UK company and in 1970 our organisation’s name permanently changed to the Canada-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce.

Today our Chamber is comprised of representatives and leaders from some of Canada and the UK’s most recognisable businesses. For over 100 years, we have prioritised meaningful introductions to encourage and foster business development – now and into the future.

The Chamber’s mission is to be the foremost non-governmental authority on all aspects of two-way trade and investment between Canada, the UK and Europe. In the UK contacts are maintained principally with the Department for Business & Trade (DBT), the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), City of London Corporation, UK foreign direct investment agencies, and local enterprise partnerships (LEPs). The Chamber works closely with the High Commission of Canada, the London offices of the Governments of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Québec and Saskatchewan, with Federal and other Provincial Government departments and offices in Canada, the British High Commission, British and Canadian Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade, municipal authorities and trade associations. In the UK the Chamber is a leading participating member of the Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce, and maintains close links with bi-lateral Canadian chambers of commerce in Europe and around the world.

At ArcelorMittal, our goal is to help build a better world with smarter steels. Steels made using innovative processes which are more efficient, use less energy, and emit significantly less carbon. Steels that are cleaner, stronger and reusable. Steels for electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure that will support societies as they transform through this century. We foster this culture of innovation by putting research and development at the heart of our operations. We have some of the best and brightest people in the business –engineers who work for us because they get to tackle the most complex of problems. With approximately 158,000 employees, we are more than just a company, we are a community. We are driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for excellence, never accepting that the limits of our material have been reached. We will continue to push boundaries, whether developing technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of steel, transforming the built environment with our new construction solutions, 3D printing automotive parts using steel powders or, through the adoption of artificial intelligence and advanced automation across our operations. This is what it takes to be the steel company of the future.
