The goal of the school is to give the students a medical education, not just to train medical practitioners. In

learning a trade one can gain sufficient expertise by

apprenticeship alone or nowadays even by post as is practised in correspondence schools. In medical

education the assimilation of knowledge, acquisition of skills, development of values and attitudes that “promote

caring and concern for the individual and for society” are lifelong endeavours.

This annual report covers the period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020

DEAN’S

MESSAGE

The Gerald Choa Memorial Fund was established in 2013 to ensure that Professor Gerald CHOA, who was the first-ever Dean and architect of CUHK Faculty of Medicine, is never forgotten for the rich legacy he left behind. We want to continue to honour his remarkable achievements through scholarships and various student and alumni programmes and activities.

Through the Fund, we want to cultivate a “support-by-giving” culture among our graduates. We want to strengthen our heritage, foster close ties between alumni and medical students and commit ourselves to serving society with passion, humility and kindness.

Donations are the very foundations from which successful programmes can be launched.

I am pleased to announce that since the Fund’s inception, we have had many magnanimous donations from within our own medical alumni as well as from the public. Nearly HK$2 million has so far been allotted as scholarships to help needy and/or outstanding students, for exchange and research programmes as well as community and student activities.

An advisory committee including myself as Dean, will conduct due diligence to ensure the Fund is used appropriately and with great prudence and transparency.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank some of our donors, starting with Mrs. LEE YICK Hoi-lun, Helen, from the Wei Lun Foundation Limited. The Foundation was founded by Mrs. LEE and her late husband, Dr. the Honourable Sir Quo Wei LEE, a well-known philanthropist and Grand Bauhinia Medallist.

The Wei Lun Foundation has always been very supportive of education and over the years, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has been one of the higher institutions in the territory which has benefitted greatly from the Foundation’s enormous donations. We can never adequately thank Mrs. LEE for her very generous contributions to us.

PRELUDE The Gerald Choa Memorial Fund (GCMF) has enabled many deserving students, in the form of scholarships, to undertake studies and research overseas, as well as helping students engage with the community in worthy causes.

From the initial creation of just two types of scholarships, namely the GCMF Admissions Scholarship and the GCMF Overseas Exchange Scholarship, the variety and number of scholarships have since expanded to cover different activities and projects.

However, donations to the Fund have not only been geared towards scholarships. With the collaboration between the CUHK Medical Alumni Association and the Faculty, we have sponsored workshops and other activities for the benefit of our medical students.

Our signature Medical Alumni Buddy Programme (MABP), initiated in 2016, is growing from strength to strength and is gaining traction with its many programmes aimed at fostering bonds between our alumni and medical students. MABP not only works like a mentoring system but also provides a platform upon which lifelong networking systems among Faculty, alumni and students can be established.

For instance, there are the increasingly popular Pre-O Camp Dinner and O Camp Gathering events for new undergraduates. Here, alumni buddies would take medical students under their wings and walk them through the good and bad with advice and support.

Thanks to the Fund, activities such as “Pre-clinical Years Survival Workshop” and “SFL Intern Survival Workshop”, are being conducted whereby physicians from both the public and private sectors are invited to share their views on different aspects of their career and experiences, or simply give tips on how to prepare for examinations or how to communicate effectively in a work setting.

To elevate the Faculty’s visibility and highlight Professor CHOA’s massive contributions to the Faculty, the Gerald Choa Oration (previously named “Gerald Choa Memorial Lecture cum Dinner”) was first organised in 2013. This important event is now held annually. Influential local and overseas personalities are usually invited to speak on any topic of their choice.

To continue the legacy of Professor CHOA, your generosity to the “Gerald Choa Memorial Fund” is greatly appreciated. The Fund, with its scholarships and programmes, will support and educate our future doctors to become professionally competent and humanistic and hopefully, go on to serve our community with passion and dedication, in keeping with the values of our Faculty.

The name — Professor Gerald CHOA — is

synonymous with the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His former

students — many now holding high ranking positions in the private and public sectors —

remember him fondly and say he had a deeply

The CU Medical Alumni Buddy Group and CUHK Medical Alumni Association rolled out 43 student activities with over 4,800 in attendance.

CU MEDICAL ALUMNI BUDDY PROGRAMME EVENTS The CU Medical Alumni Buddy Programme (MABP) is the brainchild of a group of alumni from the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The programme works like a mentoring system, connecting medical students with alumni from different graduation years. The core members within the Buddy Group are doctors from the public and private sectors as well as CUHK academic staff.

The Buddy system was created basically to instill pride in the students for their alma mater, build bonds among them, give them advice and support them in their moral and career development.

From July 2019 to June 2020, various activities had been rolled out to cater for medical students from different years, such as Pre-O Camp and O Camp gatherings for junior students and Career Talks for senior students.

Other activities included talks on extra-curricular issues, workshops on stress relief and sharing sessions on how to strike a balance between life and career. Buddies in the different groups had also arranged ad hoc gatherings or dinner parties with their own mentees.

O Camp Gatherings As usual, at the start of this 2019-20 academic year, the Pre-O Camp Dinner and the O Camp Gathering for alumni and students were held on 1 and 19 August 2019 respectively. The two events were basically experience-sharing sessions where alumni spoke of their study life on campus and how they coped with challenges. The students, in turn, were given the opportunity to ask their seniors and alumni questions about anything, from different medical specialties to tips about studying for exams. A record of 400-plus participants attended the O Camp Gathering.

CU MEDICAL ALUMNI BUDDY PROGRAMME EVENTS Pre-clinical Years Survival Workshop The workshop for pre-clinical students had been running in three consecutive years with the aim of helping medical freshmen acquaint with their studies lives in the university. It was an annual event organised in exclusive for pre-clinical students, providing them with chances to learn experience from their seniors.

About 40 pre-clinical years medical students joined the workshop on 29 October 2019. Alumni buddies Dr. Wing Yee SO (MBChB 1992) and Dr. Ngai Chuen SIN (MBChB 1994) and two current medical students, Miss Maggie LAM (Medicine Year 4) and Mr. Ocean HO (Medicine Year 4) shared their study methods, tips on mastering studies and examination, how to adjust their mindset after getting in the university and why making friends in the university and having life-long buddies are important.

Dr. Bonita LAW (MBChB 1992), Convenor of the Buddy Programme, served as a moderator to give words of encouragement to students and assure them that the alumni buddies would always be with them and provide support for them. Most of the participating students found this workshop very fruitful and inspirational.

CUHK MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION EVENTS The Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Alumni Association (CUHKMAA) was incorporated in 1992 with the aim of fostering and promoting friendship and fellowship among graduates, undergraduates and teaching staff of the CUHK Faculty of Medicine. The Association has held various extra-curricular activities, such as career development talks and intern survival workshops, since its inception.

Annual General Meeting and Annual Dinner The joint Annual General Meeting and Dinner of the CUHKMAA was held on 20 December 2019 at the Regal Riverside Hotel in Shatin. Around 40 medical alumni and their family members attended the event.

Dr. Xina LO (MBChB 2005), President of CUHKMAA, kicked off the event by reporting on the Association’s workshops and activities for the year.

The briefing was then followed by a sumptuous Chinese dinner with an exciting lucky draw to top it all off. It was a night to remember for all the participants.

SFL Intern Survival Workshop Even the COVID-19 pandemic could not stop the SFL Internal Survival Workshop from going ahead as planned.

Using Zoom webinar, the event was held on 23 June 2020. This is the first time, since its launch, the survival workshop had used live interactive means to communicate. More than 100 medical interns participated in the webinar where they were given tips and advice on what to expect as interns and how to communicate effectively with other healthcare practitioners.

The online event was moderated by its Treasurer, Dr. Zenon YEUNG (MBChB 2009) from United Christian Hospital’s Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). Other alumni who participated in the interaction included Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Bonnie WONG (MBChB 2002); Dr. Sze Ho MA (MBChB 2009) from the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics (M&T), Prince of Wales Hospital; Dr. Gloria WONG (MBChB 2009) from the Department of Radiology, Princess Margaret Hospital; Dr. Catherine CHAN (MBChB 2015) from the Prince of Wales Hospital’s ENT Department; Dr. Yuen Cheuk WONG (MBChB 2019), a current intern and Mr. Wilson CHANG, Deputy Ward Manager in the Department of M&T, Prince of Wales Hospital.

Dr. Xina LO (MBChB 2005), President of CUHKMAA, also made an appearance to show her support to the new interns. Thankfully, the webinar proceeded smoothly to the delight and relief of all.

GERALD CHOA ORATION 2019 The Gerald Choa Oration was held on 1 November 2019 at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong. In his welcome address, Professor Rocky TUAN, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK paid tribute to the founding Dean of CUHK’s Medical Faculty — the late Professor Gerald CHOA, who was instrumental in establishing the Faculty and turning it into a world-class institute of medicine.

A local or overseas influential personality from either the private or public sector is usually invited to be the guest of honour during these events and 2019 saw Professor Victor DZAU, President of US National Academy of Medicine, grace the stage. His lecture, “Future of Academic Medicine in Inspiring and Challenging Times” kept the audience spellbound.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the Faculty’s Distinguished Medical Alumni Award to Awardee in Global Achievement 2019 - Dr. Dexter LEUNG (MBChB 1997), and Awardees in Humanitarian Service 2019 - Dr. Maggie YEUNG (MBChB 1993) and Dr. Jennifer TONG (MBChB 2007). The Award was created in 2018 to recognise our medical alumni’s efforts in continuing the Faculty’s tradition of excellence and contributions to society.

Around 200 guests, including government officials, alumni and representatives from the medical and business sectors, attended the event.

GERALD CHOA MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS Since the establishment of the Fund in 2013, the Faculty has received tremendous support from donors and alumni, facilitating a host of initiatives including the awarding of 84 scholarships totalling $1,892,750 in aggregate. The Fund offers admissions scholarships to needy and/or outstanding students as well as other scholarships in the form of overseas exchange, research, community services and student activities.

Without the scholarship I would not have the opportunity to experience such a fruitful journey to King’s College London.

YUEN Tsz Kin (Medicine Year 3) Awardee of Gerald Choa Memorial Fund Overseas Research Scholarship It is my greatest honour to be awarded the Gerald Choa Memorial Fund Overseas Research Scholarship 2019-20. In the summer of 2019, I was very fortunate to be able to participate in an 8-week attachment at the University of Aberdeen on Paediatric Epidemiological Research. I have been able to conduct clinical data-related research using the most comprehensive databases in Scotland, and to be mentored on carrying out a nation-wide research from its conception.

It has been an unforgettable and inspiring experience of my first hands-on research, and I have gained a lot from my very supportive supervisor, Professor Steve TURNER, whose teaching I will treasure forever.

I hereby show my greatest appreciation and gratitude to Gerald Choa Memorial Fund for supporting my overseas learning, and I sincerely hope that this fund could continue to benefit generations to come. Thank you once again.

THANK YOU NOTES LI Yiu Kwan Ian (Medicine Year 3) Awardee of Gerald Choa Memorial Fund Overseas Research Scholarship I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude for being selected as one of the awardees of the Gerald Choa Memorial Fund Overseas Research Scholarship 2019-20. I am indeed very honoured to receive this prestigious scholarship, which encourages and inspires me to work even harder in the coming three clinical years and the career path beyond.

Aiming to become a physician-scientist after graduation, apart from pre-clinical studies, it is important to expose myself in clinical work and research laboratory work. Starting from Medicine Year 1, I have joined Professor Andrew CHAN’s laboratory for research regarding glioblastoma and the research project is now still going on. Last year, I had the chance to participate in a research attachment at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM) at the University of Oxford. During the two-month internship at WIMM, I had the precious opportunity to work on a few research projects on the field of Haematology, and I would describe that I have benefited from every moment during my learning there.

I will continue to work hard in both medical studies, research work and my future career endeavour. I am confident to become a caring medical professional and contribute myself back to the society. Once again, thank you for the support and your generous donation.

A Pilot Study in Women’s Health Screening for Foreign Domestic Helpers Organised

Awardees of Gerald Choa Memorial Fund Scholarship for Student Activities It is our greatest honour to receive the Gerald Choa Memorial Fund Scholarship for Student Activities in 2019-20 which will enable us to make the women’s health screening activity possible. Your support will enable us to continue to serve the foreign domestic helper population in Hong Kong.

Foreign domestic helpers have been a unique population in our city of Hong Kong since the 1970s. As millennials, we are a generation who grew up sharing an intimate bond with our live-in domestic helpers, who have made the difficult decision to leave behind their spouse and children to come care for families in Hong Kong. As medical students, we have witnessed first-hand how domestic helpers come in and out of hospital for a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions that are often overlooked and pushed aside by society. We founded the Hong Kong Domestic Helper Initiative (HKDHI) in 2018 upon a humanitarian calling to contribute to the health and well-being of our caregivers in a mutually empowering way.

In 2018, we successfully conducted a women’s health screening event where a total of 51 domestic helpers participated and received blood pressure and BMI check, psychiatric counselling, breast exams, and pap smears, all free-of-charge. This novel health screening event revealed a significant number of participants with abnormal breast lumps and precancerous cervical findings. We were able to catch these early enough and refer these women to appropriate specialists for follow-up before disease progression.

We were also able to collect research data to better understand the stress level, health knowledge and concerns of domestic helpers.

With your support this year we hope to expand the scale of a similar event with improvements, further helping more domestic helpers.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to your generous support towards our initiative. Receiving this distinguished scholarship has not only funded the essential spendings of the project but has also reinforced our strong motivation to pursue the path of becoming a professional and compassionate doctor.

How to make a gift?

In recognition of generous donations to the Gerald Choa Memorial Fund, an Alumni Wall was established at Choh-Ming Li Basic Medical Sciences Building (BMSB) in the CUHK Campus. On this wall, donor name plaques are plastered in the shape of leaves on a tree.

Alumni can donate either individually or together as a graduation class.

Every donation will make a difference, regardless of the amount. Your generosity will allow us to continue to work tirelessly and make a real difference to our medical community as well as society as a whole.
