ible-based. This is the “middle name” of the Divinity School, lying as it does at the center of our three-part mission statement, “Christ-Centered, Bible-based, Ministry-focused.” Too often, catchy phrases in mission statements serve as little more than promotional slogans. For Campbell University Divinity School, however, “Bible-based” is not only central to our identity, but also foundational for everything we do.

Two of the major stories of this issue of the Campbell Divinity Magazine back up this claim. The feature story, “Onto the Land and Into the Dirt” by Dr. Tony Cartledge, digs into our foundations both literally and spiritually.

Dr. Cartledge and a team of thirteen students, alumni, and friends spent two weeks on an archaeological dig, helping to bring to light key historical foundations for the biblical narrative.

Even more important, however, is the stories that emerged from the participants, of how this experience helped them to grow in their connections to and dependence on the Bible.

Our Faculty Spotlight for this issue comes from Dr. Barry Jones. In “Reading the Bible with a Wise Heart: Integrating Religious and Critical Reading of Scripture,” Dr. Jones provides a brief glimpse into the work he has been doing over many years, helping students and the church gain a richer, more complete understanding and appreciation of the Bible.

This article, adapted from Dr. Jones’ newly released book, Gaining a Heart of Wisdom: A Model for Theological Interpretation of Scripture, provides a provocative and powerful approach for students, theological educators, clergy, lay people, and anyone else to dig deeply into the Bible.

Of course, it doesn’t stop there. In the stories of students, alumni, and donors, in the research and publications and presentations of faculty, in the events both past and yet to come, the central theme of the school resounds. For Campbell University Divinity School, the Bible is the beat of our hearts, the focus of our study, the guide to our lives. Perhaps I’m biased, since I too am a biblical scholar, but I have to say that I cannot imagine a better center to our mission, for in Scripture we encounter the living voice of the living God. era, and the conference will be intellectually stimulating and spiritually uplifting.

Can we imagine a world without the tension caused by division in religions? Can we be the apostles and the embodiments of the last prayer of Jesus to God for his disciples in John’s Gospel chapter 17:11? “And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.”

The Braswell World Religions and Global Cultures Center desires a world of unity that is rich in fellowship and service with people of other faith traditions.

This conference will benefit masters of divinity students who are interested to have a one-hour credit course towards their program.

The Braswell World Religions and Global Cultures Center at Campbell University Divinity School will sponsor an international conference on June 27 this year. The theme of our conference is “Peacemaking in a Pluralistic Age.”

The conference will attract ministers and church leaders of different denominations as well as leaders of non-Christian faith traditions. Our goal is to promote mutual understanding, and we aspire to nurture one another through dialogue, insights, and symposia by eminent religious leaders in the state of North Carolina and beyond.

Peacemaking in a Pluralistic Age

The modern era is punctuated by unrest, and the minds of men and women are torn by the passion of wars. There is suspicion, jealousy and fear in our public discourse everywhere. Solemn responsibility rests upon all of us as peoples of faith to come together and talk about peacemaking.

The Braswell World Religions and Global Cultures Center is delighted to invite you to our 2019 conference.

The conference will take place on the campus of Campbell University Divinity School in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

The center celebrates diversity in a spirit of mutual tolerance and understanding. We have been enriched through dialogues, and by the views of those who do not share our beliefs and values. The love and respect we also enjoy from all the peoples of faith continue to inspire us, and we appreciate celebrating unity amidst diversity of beliefs. Our theme last year was “Jesus in a Pluralistic Age” and

eminent scholars came as keynote speakers and as members on our panel discussions.

The theme of “Peacemaking in a Pluralistic Age” this year is important and relevant to our mission and objective at the center. In this time of political uncertainty and anxiety, it seems important to direct our minds away from wars, and focus our attention on waging peace.

We desire to educate ourselves on this important theme and we have invited respected religious leaders in the state of North Carolina to be our guest speakers, panel discussion members and keynote speaker. The promotion of human unity will be central to our conference. Our program will nurture the conviction that it is more important to make peace than to keep it. There is a difference between keeping peace and making peace. Peacemaking is an active effort, leading to positive results.

Peacemaking is leading with purpose.

Peacemaking could be both a divine gift and the responsibility of each individual member of any society.

On Holy ground

W

hen Gabriel Garcia left for his first combat deployment in December 2013, northern Afghanistan was freezing cold. In the middle of a hurried trip back from the showers, which were yards away from his separate sleeping quarters, Garcia’s foot slipped. He paused and said a few admittedly unholy words when he heard a still, small voice telling him to take off his shoes because he was on holy ground.

“I thought I was crazy,” Garcia remembers.

“What am I listening to? Holy ground?

In Afghanistan?” The words reminded him of a Bible verse when God speaks to Moses for the first time, telling him to take off his shoes. “I think God was trying to guide me to that scripture and remind me to look up and realize that I was on holy ground, even in Afghanistan in the middle of a war zone.”

Before his experience on deployment, Garcia says it had been a while since he considered the voice of God. He grew up in a Spanish Southern Baptist church in Miami, Florida, the first generation of his Cuban family to be born and raised in the U.S. He probably heard God’s conversation with Moses in his church’s contemporary youth group for first and second generation Hispanic students.

The group, and Garcia’s family, supported his decision to look at Bible colleges right out of high school. Ultimately, his father’s military career influenced Garcia the most. Garcia joined ROTC while earning an associate degree, graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree and was commissioned to Fort Bragg. His goal was still to become a chaplain, but first he wanted experience so that he could better empathize with and help soldiers in moments of crisis.

It was when his unit was stationed in South Korea that Garcia says he began to lean away from God. During his first year there, the only time he prayed was during his weekly Skype call with his parents on Sunday nights, when it was Sunday morning back home.

“I know those prayers worked because I could have gotten in a lot more D I V I NITY.CAMP BE LL.E D U

trouble than I did,” he laughs. “I was a Christmas-and-Easter-only Christian, and I felt hypocritical when Saturday night I was at the bars and Sunday morning I was in church. Going out was how we relaxed. It was stressful being at a major base during a tense time and knowing that Korea could go from peacetime to wartime so quickly.”

The turnaround to Afghanistan after returning from Korea was quick and Garcia’s unit was busy preparing for deployment. But once he was there, the reminder of God’s presence, even in Afghanistan, snowballed into a total renewal of faith for Garcia. He started reading the calling of Moses, David, Saul and Samuel, continued to other Old Testament leaders, and then moved on to the disciples of the New Testament.

“God started moving in my heart again.

Reading the Bible was what sparked the calling to chaplaincy,” he says. “I just kept running into chaplains and when I asked what their calling experience was like, they all told me the same thing — it’s a desire that’s not going to go away until you fulfill it.”

Garcia’s talks with chaplains motivated him to start his master’s degree online.

He quickly realized that becoming a chaplain and working full-time in the Army would be a long, slow process. He switched to the Army Reserves and had begun looking into divinity schools when a Campbell student from his hometown of Miami recommended Campbell University Divinity School, only a short drive from Fort Bragg.

“I came here and went to the prayer tower to ask God that His will be done — and it was. That’s why the tower is such a special place to me,” he says. “My tour finished right before the weather turned, and I got a taste of my first snow day here at Campbell. I just knew this was the place.”

Garcia’s favorite thing about Campbell Divinity is the relationships he’s built with students and professors on all paths of life. At Campbell Divinity, classes are filled with individuals called to a

wide variety of ministries. Some are working to become pastors, chaplains, or missionaries; others are in more nontraditional settings studying to learn how to incorporate their faith into their careers. For Garcia, that career will be in chaplaincy and counseling in the military and veteran community.

“I have learned so much from Campbell Divinity, particularly about pastoral care from Dr. Mac Wallace,” Garcia says. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been working and thought, ‘Oh, this is what Dr. Wallace was talking about.’ It’s being the least anxious presence in a room — not worrying too much about what you say, but just being there, especially in the moment of crisis.”

Garcia served as a resident chaplain in Murray Hall and completed a chaplain internship at the Durham VA Medical Center before starting a part-time chaplaincy at First Health in Moore County, where he works with a mix of civilian and veteran patients. In October, he will start a year of full-time residency at the Asheville VA Medical Center.

LaTonya McIver Penny

H

er husband often tells people that his wife isn’t bivocational — she’s tri-vocational.

But according to LaTonya McIver Penny, “quad-vocational” is probably more accurate.

The senior pastor of New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Roxboro, North Carolina, Penny is the executive director of Family Abuse Services of Alamance County and the leader of a non-profit called Mary’s Grace, which advocates for the respectful and compassionate treatment of children with disabilities. She’s also a mother of twelve-year old twins. And in May, she graduated from Campbell University Divinity School with her Doctor of Ministry degree.

Penny is a native of Leasburg, North Carolina and grew up in the Missionary Baptist Church. Her family was in the pews every Sunday, and her foundation in faith inspired her to pursue a career where she could make a difference. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications to work in journalism.

Penny began to pray earnestly for God to show her what her career would be. To her surprise, her uncle, who had since passed away, began appearing in her dreams, giving advice to someone preaching in a pulpit just out of Penny’s view. After a month of the recurring dream, Penny saw that she was the one in the pulpit and her uncle had been coaching her. She immediately talked to her pastor and learned that he’d been praying for her to accept the call to preach.

“He said he had seen it in me before I saw it in myself, and he’d been waiting for my phone call. I didn’t know what it meant.

I’d never seen a woman in a pulpit and never seen a woman preach.”

She began working on her Master of Divinity Degree at Wake Forest University School of Divinity in WinstonSalem, North Carolina, where she was introduced to countless female ministry leaders and pastors. Now as the first female elected pastor of her 117-year-old church, Penny told Baptist News that the pushback has been limited.

Penny’s master’s in education has helped her identify and respond to those with special needs, and when she isn’t teaching, preaching or working her fulltime job, she is speaking at youth groups about being inclusive. Her husband Chas, a minister himself, also teaches, and her mother and best friend assist with their counseling and nursing backgrounds.

Balancing Mary’s Grace with her pastoral duties, Family Abuse Services and schooling made Penny’s time at Campbell Divinity challenging. Penny chose Campbell because she liked the intimacy of the program cohort system and the ability to create a program that would be individualized to her passions.

She credits her faculty mentor, Dr. Alicia Myers, with encouraging her to trust the process and finish on time even when it felt impossibly overwhelming.

A ministry of presence

O

ver the course of his career, Rev. Dr. Terry L. Henry has learned that sometimes ministry is simply about being there. Sometimes that means being there by a patient’s side as a chaplain. Sometimes it means being there to listen as students in Liberia discuss their challenges. And all the time it means being there for his wife, his family, and his congregation.

The congregation of Macedonia Missionary Baptist was behind Henry’s pursuit of theological education from the beginning. After 30 years of serving there, Henry says that the more time he spends with his congregation, the better their relationship gets.

teach and preach in Zimbabwe at the Zimbabwe Baptist Seminary. Following his work in Zimbabwe, he returned to Africa to serve as the commencement speaker for the 2016 graduation class at the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary.

When the students invited him to return to speak in their classes, the Seminary appointed him to serve as their seventh president. Today, he travels to the school in Paynesville, Liberia once a quarter and connects with the students virtually every day.

“I am told I’m the first president to go out into the yard and spend time with the students, but I absolutely love it,” he says.

“Having lunch with them, sitting under a huge tree in the middle of campus, I get to hear about their struggles in their context and how I can help and just listen.”

Being a seminary president brings fundraising challenges and a responsibility to maintain accreditation.

One of Henry’s first priorities is keeping the balance between time with his wife, his son and daughter, and his congregation and the school entrusted to his care. Before accepting the role as president, Henry took the matter to his church congregation to get their unanimous approval.

“I’m very organized and have a great staff.

I could not do it without them,” Henry says. “They pray with me before I leave, they pray while I’m absent and they anticipate my return. The blessing of it all has been to have a church family that is so supportive of my efforts. They know that I have teaching at my heart. It’s wonderful.”

Henry’s family’s support of his ministry in Liberia has helped him realize his passion for teaching. His wife Jacqueline’s career as a flight attendant has made his international travel easy, and his daughter says he has a gift for making things simple with stories and analogies. When his time as president of Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary comes to an end, Henry looks forward to his next calling.

“I really don’t know where my ministry is going. I know that God uses everything we’ve been through to propel us forward.

I know it’s going to be leading some institution and I feel comfort in that.”

“Then you guys came,” he said, “and really shifted some dirt. You pulled us out of the poop.”

Co-directors Norma Franklin of Haifa University and Jennie Ebeling of the University of Evansville were also pleased. Franklin described the team as “phenomenal,” noting how members learned to dig both quickly and carefully, keeping a level surface rather than digging random holes.

Student Larry Turlington, who is a bivocational pastor of Fort Run Freewill Baptist Church in Snow Hill, put his general contracting skills and strong work ethic to good use. He quickly emerged as a model excavator and was often soaked with sweat before 6:00 a.m.

“Larry,” said area supervisor Noga Blockman of Haifa University, “is in a class by himself.”

But Turlington insisted, “I’m just keeping up.”

Other members weren’t far behind.

Whether clearing an ancient pavement;

uncovering a workshop for basalt implements; articulating mudbrick; lowering a surface; identifying and preserving pottery, flint, and bones; or washing and reading ceramic finds, the team worked efficiently and cooperatively with supervisors and other students, mostly from the University of Evansville and from University College of London.

Even when assigned to the less glamorous and physically demanding work of backfilling squares that had been fully excavated with dirt from the spoil pile, team members worked without complaint.

Most of the work focused on a level that had been settled by people living in the Early Bronze Age (about 3600-2600 BCE), a thousand years before Abraham’s time. “Robber trenches,” where later peoples had repurposed stones from earlier building foundations and filled in the gaps with dirt and refuse, produced broken pottery from the Middle and Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Persian and Hellenistic periods, as well as Roman and Mamluk times.

Muriel Lasater, who finished her MDiv work at Campbell in December 2018 and who now works as the Admissions and Student Finances Counselor for Campbell Divinity, said digging could be enlightening despite the strenuous effort, noting that “I love how this process connects us to humanity at large and allows us to gain insight into their lives by studying pottery, artifacts, and figurines. It’s amazing how this connects us to people who lived thousands and thousands of years ago.”

Digging through the Bronze age reminded participants that the Israelites controlled the land for only a few hundred years during the Iron Age. Other peoples were there before them, with them, and after them.

Divinity, and believes the dig will prove helpful in his future ministry. “The practical experience of participating in an actual dig has not only been an experience of a lifetime,” he said, “but has provided insights into Canaanite, Israelite, and even Roman history that will surely assist my ministry in the future.”

John Robert Harris, a graduate and associate pastor of Faith Fellowship Church in Kinston, NC, found visiting those sites to be a memorable prelude to the dig experience, bringing him closer to the biblical narratives.

“Stepping into an ongoing archaeological dig in Jezreel has furthered my connection with the Bible as well as scratched my itch for discovery,” he said.

Like several other participants, Harris kept a journal of his experiences. “My time here will forever stay with me,” he said, “and I pray will continue to teach me years from now.”

For Victor Knight, the spiritual benefit of the dig came as a surprise. After taking Divinity School courses during his last semester as an undergraduate at Campbell, Knight began work on a 12 SPRING 2019

master’s degree at Yale University in late summer 2018.

“For me, coming here was an academic affair,” he said, noting that his academic side was indeed challenged through lectures and the field experience.

“Nevertheless, in a much more unexpected way, the trip has affected me spiritually. From standing on the Mt. of Olives to watching pilgrims driven to tears, I have come to have a more complete picture of the Bible.”

Dale Belvin, a Campbell Divinity graduate and pastor of the Rose of Sharon Freewill Baptist Church in Bear Grass, NC, also appreciated both the academic and spiritual aspects of the mini-tour and dig. “This has been both an academic experience and a spiritual experience. It is academic because I have learned so much. I have learned about Israel and Jerusalem in biblical times as well as modern day Israel. I have learned some of the finer details about some of my favorite biblical stories like David fighting Goliath and some of the traditions around the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. I have learned a great deal about Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age living.

“It is a spiritual experience because this is the land of the Bible. Nearly every city,

town, village, landmark, mountain, or area has significance. I have found the work of excavating to be very spiritual as we have gotten into the dirt and put in a good day’s work.”

For Ryan Craddock, a Campbell Divinity student who works as a counselor in a halfway house, getting to Israel was the primary goal. “I would have washed camels to reach it,” he said.

“My main desire was to step into the scenery of the stories I love, that formed my faith, ancient tales that have shaped the world,” Craddock said. “I was quickly immersed in a place where the past meets the present, and where people from all nations, faith traditions and ideologies converge to experience and discover something uniquely human and deeply personal.”

Craddock found that the experience went even deeper: “For me, the whole trip is like an excavation of the soul. With some work, guidance and gracious assistance from others, stone and soil are cleared away to reveal ancient realities and bring new insight.”

The community aspect of living in a kibbutz and getting to know other people was especially gratifying for Karie Parkes, a Campbell Divinity graduate and current Director of Student Activities

for Campbell’s undergraduates. Her favorite activity was washing pottery late each morning, rinsing and scrubbing hundreds of shards while talking with people who were working in other parts of the dig.

The community aspect became particularly helpful when Karie’s grandmother unexpectedly died four days before the team’s scheduled return.

She did not have to grieve alone.

Rick Hollings, a retired psychologist and Campbell Divinity graduate who took the archaeology course for personal enrichment, also appreciated the community aspect of working with people from other places and other countries, as well as the Campbell Divinity/Nurturing Faith Experience team. “I particularly appreciate the chance to get to know members of our group,” he said, “to hear their stories, and to make friendships that will go beyond the two weeks we have together in this amazing country.”

FACULTY ARTICLE readers see the Bible as a vast treasury of meaning and guidance, and they see themselves as capable and obligated to read it for all it is worth. Most people who read the Bible read it religiously.

In addition to being Holy Scripture, however, the Bible is also a classic text of Western literature. Due to its enormous influence in world history, the Bible has been studied critically in universities and academic societies for over 200 years.

Scholars of linguistics, history, literature, and religion have studied it intensely in order to describe what it meant in its original setting and what it teaches us about the times, places, and people from whence it came. Most universities, graduate schools, and, yes, divinity schools, study the Bible critically.

Although there is much to be gained from both critical and religious approaches to the Bible, most people seem to prefer one way of reading the Bible over the other. This is understandable. Life is hectic, we are awash in information, and there are only so many hours in the day. Even ministers who are trained to read the Bible critically in divinity school must give most of their time and attention to meeting the spiritual needs of their congregations whose primary approach to the Bible is rightly, but almost exclusively, religious. Is there a way for ministers and congregations to blend the strengths of both ways of reading the Bible?

Reading the Bible with a Wise Heart:

Integrating religious & critical reading of scripture

A

prayer found in Psalm 90:12 asks God for a special kind of instruction. “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a wise heart.”

The prayer does not ask for a wise mind, but for a wise heart. In biblical language, the heart is the seat of intellectual activity, but it also symbolizes emotion, desire, and will. It is a metaphor for the innermost self. To have a wise heart, therefore, goes beyond gaining knowledge. It means being a wise person

in every dimension of life, in thought, feeling, and action.

Reading the Bible well requires a wise heart. One quality of reading the Bible with a wise heart involves bringing together two important approaches to the Bible. These two approaches are called religious reading and critical reading. The Bible has been read as a religious text since there was a Bible. As theologian Paul Griffiths explained in his book Religious Reading, religious

In the 1980s and 1990s, the theologian Gabriel Fackre (rhymes with “Packer”) wrote a systematic theology intended to meet the needs of pastors and their congregations. Fackre devoted a volume of his “pastoral systematics” to a model of interpretation that combined religious and critical reading of Scripture.

Unfortunately, Fackre’s approach was not widely adopted. Perhaps that was because he was ahead of his time.

Recent literature on the theological interpretation of Scripture shows that his concerns and proposals are as relevant and beneficial today as when he proposed them three decades ago.

Fackre argued that pastors should lead their congregations to read the Bible according to four important levels of meaning. He called these the four senses of the text. He named them the common

sense; the critical sense; the canonical sense; and the contextual sense. These four senses help people to read the Bible with a wise heart.

The common sense of the text is the meaning of the plain language of the text that any religious reader could identify using the general skills of reading literary texts. Even though the Bible is an ancient text with specialized meaning, people of faith are able to read the Bible for themselves using the understanding that they possess. The Bible is the church’s book and interpretation rightly takes place in the church and for the purposes of the church’s worship and service.

Reading the Bible in the church according to its common sense will result in affirmations of what the text clearly says. Due to the Bible’s history and long transmission across time, language, and culture, however, it will also raise questions that are beyond the limitations of its general readers in the church. This is where the critical sense of the text comes into play. The critical sense of the text uses the knowledge of specialists and scholars to explain elements of the text that aren’t clear to a common sense reading. Theologically, this is possible because scholars, even those who live outside of the community of faith, still bear the divine image of the Creator that makes them capable of discerning the light and wisdom of general revelation.

the Bible, but it is ultimately insufficient.

Theological interpretation neither begins nor ends with the critical sense of the text. Biblical texts have come to us through the church’s reception and recognition of two separate but interrelated testaments that comprise the canon of Scripture. The meaning of any text is informed by the sweep and story of the whole Bible in its canonical sense. Here, Fackre cites his indebtedness to the OT scholar Brevard Childs, who proposed that a biblical text should be read in its relationship to its own testament and in the interrelationship of both testaments, reading “in both directions,” the New Testament interpreting the Old, and the Old Testament interpreting the New. Since this approach to the Bible was practiced with skill and erudition by scholars in the Patristic, Medieval, and Reformation periods, the canonical sense is greatly aided by the study of church history and by attention to the narrative shape and theological affirmations of the church’s historic confessions and creeds.

A biblical text’s meaning is incomplete, however, until it is applied to a specific personal and communal context. This is the contextual sense of the text. Here, all of the wisdom, skill, and experience of pastors and disciples is yielded to the Spirit graciously speaking to us and through us to the world that God loves.

Reflection on these four senses of the text yield some practical guidelines

for interpretation. The common sense of the text teaches us to begin our interpretation of the Bible in the church and to trust sincere followers of Christ to understand the clear meaning of Scripture. People will be more receptive to the resources of critical study when they have confronted the questions that readily arise from the text. The critical sense teaches the church humility, particularly through listening for the wisdom that God distributes to people whose aims are not necessarily or directly identical to the purposes of the church. The canonical sense of the text reminds us that interpretation of a text is not complete apart from the whole story of God’s saving acts that holds the Bible together as a unified witness. Finally, the contextual sense of the text reminds us that God has given us the Scriptures so that we can serve the world by reading, heeding, and living out the Good News at the center of the Bible’s story.

Some may wonder whether encouraging ministers and disciples to attend to the four senses of the Bible might not have the opposite effect of discouraging them.

Who has time to do all of that? The task is daunting, but the goal of theological education is to make available the full resources of the church’s gifts. These things do not have to be learned all at once and, in fact, they cannot be.

However, to spend a life immersed in the Scriptures, sitting at the feet of the saints through the ages, weighing the discoveries of “devout and patient scholars,” and teaching others to read, love, and inwardly digest the word of God is a challenge that is both exciting and enriching. It is one of the tasks that makes it “worth a life” to be a Christian minister.

Oasis: Church Music Conference Over one hundred music leaders, ministers, and choir members joined us this past October for our annual Oasis Music Conference. Attendees were immersed in reading sessions, morning worship services, and an evening concert all designed to renew passion and refine their skills for ministry. Eleven clinicians offered their expertise on a wide range of topics, including a new parallel pastoral track that was added to our schedule. We look forward to hosting Oasis 2019 on Friday, October 18th and Saturday, October 19th.

The L.B. & Mabel Reavis Professorship & Scholarship Program The Campbell University Divinity School hosted the L.B. and Mabel Reavis Professorship and Scholarship Lecture Series on October 2, 2018. Dr. Timothy George, Dean and Professor of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University served as the guest lecturer.

Faculty, students, and staff gathered during the Tuesday morning Chapel service to hear Dr. George speak on the topic of “Faithful Unto Death: The Witness of Saint Polycarp.” Dr. George then delivered his second lecture that afternoon on “Saint Augustine and the Jagged Journey Toward God.”

Cedar Falls Baptist Church

C

ampbell Divinity School is grateful for partnerships that have been established with local churches in North Carolina and in surrounding states. Cedar Falls Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC is a prime example.

The congregation at Cedar Falls Baptist Church has been a part of the Campbell Divinity family from the very beginning.

When the Divinity School was founded in 1996, Cedar Falls was looking for a way to support young men and women who were going into the ministry.

The congregation wanted to provide support and affirmation for ministers who were seeking to better serve the Lord by equipping themselves through theological education. The prayers and support of the church came to fruition in the form of an endowed scholarship.

On May 26, 1998, The Cedar Falls Baptist Church Divinity School Endowed Scholarship Trust Agreement was established by and between the congregation of Cedar Falls Baptist Church and Campbell University Divinity School. Ed Gilchrist, Maurice Taylor and Otho Tew were the members of the congregation who signed the trust agreement. Each member was instrumental in establishing the scholarship. Sadly, Mr. Gilchrist and Mr. Tew passed away in 1999 and 2001, respectively. Mr. Taylor is still an active member of Cedar Falls, serving as a trustee, a member of the adult choir and being named a deacon emeritus.

Mr. Taylor is part of one of the founding families of Cedar Falls Baptist Church.

About 140 years ago, the church began as a small community that met in a member’s home down on the banks of the river. Due to the faithfulness and stewardship of its members, the church has now grown into a campus located on 401 with a sanctuary, chapel, fellowship hall, education wing, children’s wing and recreation fields.

Cedar Falls Baptist Church has had a long history that includes the service of many individuals connected to Campbell Divinity School. The most recent pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Sholar, who served from March 2010 to April 2019, has special connections to Campbell University, as he has earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion, a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the school. Before Dr. Sholar was called to serve as pastor of the church, Dr. Michael Cogdill, Founding Dean of the Divinity School, served as Interim Pastor. In addition, Rev. Doug Thompson, who serves as Minister of Music and Ministerial Assistant, has Campbell connections, as well. Rev. Thompson has built relationships with many Campbell faculty and staff and has participated in various church music related events over the past fifteen years.

There have been several gifted members, leaders and ministers from Cedar Falls who have attended Campbell Divinity School. Current student Ron Houser serves as Minister of Youth and Outreach

at Cedar Falls and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in May 2019.

Johnny Jackson is also a current Master of Divinity student who is a very active member of Cedar Falls. Johnny is a recipient of the church’s scholarship and she expresses her gratitude by noting, “The people of Cedar Falls Baptist Church are very near and dear to my heart, and being able to be a recipient of their scholarship came as an unexpected blessing to me.” Johnny continues by exclaiming, “I wouldn’t be able to attend Campbell University Divinity School without them. I hope to one day be able to make as much of an impact on someone’s life as the people of Cedar Falls Baptist Church have made on me.”

When reflecting on his time as pastor, Dr. Sholar describes the relationship between Campbell Divinity School and Cedar Falls Baptist Church as a “tremendous partnership.” Over the years, the church has invited professors to speak and lead revivals, and they have also extended invitations to the different schools on campus to host various events.

The church has had a lot of confidence in Campbell Divinity because they have seen and experienced first-hand through people like Dr. Cogdill, Dr. Sholar, and Ron that the school is equipping folks to study the Bible and live out the teachings that Jesus taught us.

The members of Cedar Falls are described as being “good stewards of both their time and their resources.”

The church is very future-oriented, as they try to focus on attracting the next generation. They continue to explore ways they can reach out to visitors and care for the needs of younger adults and their children, while also maintaining thriving relationships with their senior adult members.

“The heart of the congregation is special,” Dr. Sholar explained. “In the eyes of the congregation, Campbell is a very special place.” These are reasons why the church continues to generously give to Campbell Divinity School and support its students.

Not only is Cedar Falls Baptist Church a blessing to their community and to the members of the church, but they are also a blessing to our Campbell Divinity family. The school is grateful for their partnership and for their commitment to nurture and support students who strive to be Christ-Centered, Bible-Based and Ministry-Focused.

E.J. & Amaretta Prevatte Biblical Studies Lecture Series

On February 19, 2019 the Divinity School celebrated women in ministry in honor of February being the Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching. Current Master of Divinity students, Meredith Lanier, Miriam Phillips, and Vickie Smith delivered sermons that inspired and motivated all in attendance. All other elements of the service were also led by other female students. Current students, Carol Sampson, Karen Lucas and Anna Moxley led the congregation in worship through music. Erica Wammock read the poem, “Women in Ministry for This Present Age – A Poem” by Rev. Barbara Essex, and Monica Young closed the service with a benediction.

Overture Music & Worship Conference First Baptist Church in Clinton hosted our fourth annual Overture Music and Worship Conference on March 17, 2019.

Joseph Martin, Artist in Residence at Concordia University in Austin, TX, was the featured clinician. Approximately 225 people gathered at this one-day intensive music conference and received training and resources that can be applied in their respective worship settings. The conference ended with a worship concert, led by a 75 person choir under the direction of Joseph and Sue Martin, the featured clinician and vocalist for the event. The next Overture Music and Worship Conference will feature songwriter and worship leader Heather Sorenson on March 15, 2020. Each year, the conference is sponsored by the Donnie M. Royal Foundation, which seeks to promote music events in memory of Mrs. Dorothy Turlington Royal.

On November 6, 2018, Dr. Ellen Davis, Amos Ragan Kearns Professor of Bible and Practical Theology at Duke Divinity School presented two lectures titled, “The Preacher as Public Imaginer” and “Crossing Borders for the Sake of Life: The Book of Ruth.” Following the morning lecture, over 30 students, faculty, and staff joined Dr. Davis for a lunch and learn session in Taylor Hall to continue the conversation from her first lecture.

This ministry reaches approximately 20,000 viewers each week.

• Led a four week series at Hayes Barton Baptist Church titled “Worship Matters” • Planned and led SEGUE, Youth Choir Festival with 140 singers participating, February 16, 2019 • Planning for 2020 SEGUE • Planned and led Oasis Music and Worship Conference 2019, a relaunch event that had over 100 participants with a new track for pastors • Along with alumna Lauren McCollister, coordinated and led Overture 2019, a music leadership training event at First Baptist Church, Clinton on March 17, 2019. Supported by a grant from the Donnie M. Royal Foundation, this event featured Joseph Martin as the guest composer and clinician.

New hires JAN JERNIGAN Administrative Assistant to Academics Jan Jernigan was hired as the Administrative Assistant to the Divinity School’s Academic Office in July 2018.

She served in a similar role in the Christian Studies and Foreign Language Departments at Campbell University since April of 2015. Before that, she served as a youth minister, realtor, executive administrative assistant, and legal assistant.

MURIEL LASATER Admissions & Student Finances Counselor In July 2018, Muriel Lasater was hired as the Admissions and Student Finances Counselor for the Admissions Office at the Divinity School. Muriel previously served as the Graduate Assistant for Chruch Relations and Development.

She completed the coursework for her Master of Divinity degree in December 2018 and graduated in May 2019. Her experience as a student prepares her well to assist prospective students applying to Divinity School; and her undergraduate degree in mathematics from NC State equips her well to manage the scholarship awarding process for current students in her new role.

TERE MURPHY Administrative Assistant to the Dean This May, Tere Murphy joined the Divinity School staff to serve as the new Administrative Assistant to the Dean.

She has extensive experience with this role, having worked as Administrative Assistant for Adult and Online Education for many years - but she also brings extensive experience and commitment to church work, including 10 years of serving as youth minister.

Retirements May 2019 was a significant time for the Divinity School, as its Founding Dean, Dr. Michael G. Cogdill, and long-time Administrative Assistant to the Dean, Mrs. Joyce Mashtare retired.

Dr. Cogdill retired after serving Campbell University for 36 years, and Mrs. Mashtare will have served for 22 years within the University. Their good work and legacies will continue to live on in the mission and work of the Divinity School.
