Introduction

Thetitle“Crime and Ethos”effectivelycapturestheessenceofourundergraduatejournal byintertwiningthestudyofcriminologywiththeconceptofethos;thecharacteristicspiritofa cultureorcommunityasmanifestedinitsbeliefs. Ourjournalarticulatesanethosthatmakes senseofundergraduateculturalandgenerationalbeliefsandunderstandingsofcrime,whichis expressedthroughourjournal,exclusivelycomposedofundergraduatescholarshipandthought. Readerscanexpectathematicintersectionofacriticalexaminationinthedisciplineof criminologyandthecommunicationofundergraduateacademicwriting. Crime and Ethos encouragesamultidisciplinaryandintersectionalapproach,appealingtoresearchwithinthe disciplinesofstudentsinfieldssuchaslegalstudies,sociology,psychology,andother interrelatedfields.

Purpose of the Manual

Crime and Ethos’ Mission Statement

Crime and Ethos strivestocreateaspaceforelevatedscholarshipwithinthe Undergraduatestudentbody,primarilyforstudentswithintheInstituteofCriminologyand CriminalJustice(ICCJ).TheICCJpridesitselfonbeingadynamicsocialjustice-oriented nationalhubforinterdisciplinarycriticalcriminologicalresearch,teaching,andengagement Thisjournalallowsforstudentstofurtherengageincriticalinterdisciplinaryworkandwill preparethemforfutureresearchopportunities,suchastheHonoursThesis(CRCJ4908)and graduatestudies.

Objectives of Crime and Ethos:

- Providestudentswithopportunitiestoengagewithacademicscholarship;

- Demystifyresearchandacademicwritingforundergraduatestudents;

EditorialStructure

Role Descriptions and Responsibilities

Theexecutiveeditorialstructureconsistsof:Editor-in-Chief(1),DeputyEditor(1), ExecutiveEditors(8),CopyEditors(4min./adhoc),andGraphicDesigner(1).

TheresponsibilitiesoftheEditor-in-Chiefinclude:

- Ensurethejournalupholdsitsobjectives,missions,andvision.

- Overseetheeditorialprocess,includingtheassignmentofsubmissionstoeditorsand selectionofsubmissionsforpublication.

- Ensuretheaccuracy,clarity,andconsistencyofpublishedcontent.

- Delegateresponsibilitiesandtaskstotheeditorialteam.

- Adheretothehiringprocessandselecttheeditorialteam.

- Criticallyandimpartiallyevaluatethesubmissionscontentforitsacademicrigor, relevance,clarity,andcontributiontothefield.

- Updateeditorialprocesses,submissionguidelines,andethicalstandardsasneeded.

- Overseethejournal’sbudget,ensuringresourcesareusedefficiently.

TheresponsibilitiesoftheDeputyEditorinclude:

- AssisttheEditor-in-Chiefinprovidingeditorialdirectionforthejournal.

- Overseethesubmission,review,andeditingprocess,includingscreening.submissions forsuitabilityandmakingeditorialdecisionsinconsultationwiththeEditor-in-Chief.

- WorkcloselywiththeExecutiveEditorsoftheeditorialteamtocoordinateandguide themthroughthevariousstagesofthepublicationprocess.

- Criticallyandimpartiallyevaluatethesubmissionsforitsacademicrigor,relevance, clarity,andcontributiontothefield.

- Updateeditorialprocesses,submissionguidelines,andethicalstandardsasneeded.

- Adheretothehiringprocessandselecttheeditorialteam.

- ProvidementorshipandtrainingtoExecutiveEditors,specificallyinacademic writing,researchethics,andthepeer-reviewprocess.

TheresponsibilitiesoftheExecutiveEditorsinclude:

- Criticallyandimpartiallyevaluatethesubmissionscontentforitsacademicrigor, relevance,clarity,andcontributiontothefield.

- Offercomprehensiveandconstructivecommentstowardsenhancingthequality, clarity,andacademicintegrityofthesubmission.

- Periodicallymeetwiththeeditorialteamtodiscusseditorialprocesses,policies, submissionguidelines,andethicalstandards.

- Executivesintheir3rdyearorhigherwillactasmentors,guidingandsupportingthe first-andsecond-yearexecutiveeditorsintheeditingandreviewingprocess.

- WorkincollaborationwithExecutiveEditorstooffercomprehensiveandconstructive commentstowardsenhancingthequality,clarity,andacademicintegrityofthe submission.

TheresponsibilitiesoftheCopyEditorsinclude:

- Reviewandeditapprovedarticlesforgrammar,punctuation,spelling,andsyntax.

- Ensurethatallcitationsandreferencesareaccurateandformattedcorrectlyaccording totheAPA7theditionstyleguide.

- Checkfactsandreferences,ensuringthatallinformationisaccurateandverifiable.

TheresponsibilitiesoftheGraphicDesignerinclude:

- Createanddevelopvisuallayoutsforthejournal,includingcoverdesigns,page layouts,andadditionalgraphicalelements.

- Workcloselywitheditorstoensurethatthedesignalignswiththejournal’sthematic contentandeditorialtone.

- Designingandcuratingengagingcontentrelevanttothejournal’sfocus.Including creatingpostsaboutrecentpublications,callsforpapers,andeditorialboard announcements.

- Attendeditorialmeetingstoprovideinputondesignaspectsandunderstandupcoming contentneeds.

Hiring Process

Editor-in-Chief(1)

- Whenapplicable,thecurrentDeputyEditorwillassumetheroleoftheEditor-in-Chief fortheupcomingacademicyear

- Intheevent,thecurrentDeputyEditorisunabletocontinue,upperyearExecutive Editorswillfirstbeconsideredfortheposition,followedbyotherexistingboard members.Inanyotherevent,upperyearcriminologystudentswithresearch experienceshallbeconsidered.

- ThenewEditor-in-ChiefmustbeselectedbythecurrentEditor-in-ChiefbyApril30th ofthatyear

DeputyEditor(1)

- Whenapplicable,upperyearExecutiveEditorswillfirstbeconsideredfortherole.

- IntheeventnoupperyearExecutiveEditorsareabletocontinue,upperyear criminologystudentswithresearchexperienceshallbeconsidered.

- ThenewDeputyEditormustbeselectedbythecurrentEditor-in-ChiefbyApril30th ofthatyear.

ExecutiveEditors(8)

- AllExecutiveEditorsarerequiredtosubmitaresume/CV,awritingsample,andletter ofinterest.

- ExecutiveEditorialpositionsareopentoallundergraduatestudents.

- ExecutiveEditorswillbeselectedbytheEditor-in-ChiefandDeputyEditorinFallof theAcademicyear.

CopyEditors(min.4/adhoc)

- CopyEditorsarerequiredtosubmitaresume/CV,awritingsample,andletterof interest.

- CopyEditorpositionsarereservedforloweryearstudents.

- CopyEditors(4)willbeselectedbytheEditor-in-ChiefandDeputyEditorinFallof theacademicyear.

- AdditionalCopyEditorswillbehiredonanadhocbasis,dependingonthevolumeof submission.

Selection&ReviewProcess

Submissions Guidelines

Beforesubmittingyourwrittenentry,pleaseensurethatyouhavereviewedandfulfilled therequirementslistedbelow Submissionsthatdonotadheretotheseguidelinesmaybe rejected.

- Theauthor(s)arecurrentlyenrolledasanUndergraduatestudentatCarleton Universityorarecentgraduate(withinthelasteightmonths).

- Submittedworksmustberelatedtothedisciplinesofcriminology&criminaljustice andfitinaccordancewiththejournal’sscopestatement.

- Theauthor(s)mustidentifythetypeofsubmissionuponsubmittingtheirwork, categoriesinclude:criticalreflection,artisticmedium,researchpaperorresearch project.

- Thetextisdouble-spaced;usesa12-pointTimesNewRomanfont;andhas1” margins.

- Allmaterialswithinthesubmissionhavebeenproperlycitedaccordingtothe7th editionofthePublicationManualoftheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation(APA); whereapplicabletheURLsforreferenceshavebeenprovided.

- Nominimumlength.CriticalReflection,CreativethinkingpiecesandResearchPaper Submissionsshouldnotexceed5,000wordsinlength,excludingbibliography,tableof contents,indexandanyotherrelevantmaterials.

- Thesubmissionfileisa.docxformat.

- Workissubmittedonorbeforethecallforsubmissiondeadline.

- Submissionhasnotbeenpreviouslypublishednorisitbeforeanotherjournalfor consideration.

- SubmissionsabidebyourAcademicIntegrityPolicy.

- Allidentifyinginformationhasbeenremovedfromthedocument,includingnameof author(s),studentnumber(s),andcourseinformation.

- Aseparatedocumentshallbesubmittedwiththewrittensubmission.Thisdocument willincludetheauthor(s)name,studentnumber,undergraduateinstitution,and submissiontitle

Decision Making and Review Process

Onceallthesubmissionshavebeencollected,submissionswillberandomlyand anonymouslyassignedtoanExecutiveEditorforpeerreview.TheExecutiveEditorswillfirst ensurethatthesubmissionadherestoallofthesubmissionguidelinesorelseitmayleadtoan immediaterejection.Uponinitialscreening,ExecutiveEditorswillconductathoroughreadof thesubmission,criticallyandimpartiallyevaluatethesubmissionscontentforitsacademicrigor, relevance,clarity,andcontributiontothefield,andelectwhethertohaveitbe“Acceptwith proofing,”“Revisionsrequired,”Reviseandresubmit,”or“Declined.”.TheEditor-in-Chiefwill thencontactauthorsandinformthemofthedecisionandprovidesuggestionsforrevisionif applicable.Authorswillthenhavetheopportunitytomakechangesaccordingtotheeditor’s recommendations.Authorswillthenresubmittheirsubmissionforasecondreadwithin10 businessdaysofreceivingtherecommendations.Oncethesecondroundofreadinghasbeen completed,minoreditsmaybemadeifnecessary Followingalledits,finaldecisionswillbe made(acceptedordeclined)andacceptedsubmissionswillbeincludedinthepublicationofthe journal.

Thecurrentiterationofthisjournalwillbepublishedannuallyattheendoftheschool term(April).

Suggested Production Timeline

Asuggestedproductiontimelineisasfollows:

- ApplicationsforBoardRoleswillbeopenbytheendofSeptemberandmustremain openforaminimumoftwoweeks.

- Thehiringprocessshouldbecompletednomorethantwoweeksafterapplications close.

- SubmissionsshouldopennolaterthanOctober1st .

- SubmissionsshouldclosenoearlierthanthelastdayofFallTerm.

- FirstreadshouldtakeplacewithinthefirsttwoweeksoftheWinterTerm.

- Feedbackshouldbesenttoauthorsnomorethan5businessdaysafterthefirstread hasbeencompleted.

- Authorswillhave10businessdaystomakeeditsandre-submittheirwork.

- Thesecondreadshouldtakeplacewithin10businessdaysofreceivingthe re-submission.

- Ifnecessary,minoreditscanbesentbacktoauthorsforresubmissionfollowingthe secondread.

- Thefinalreadshouldoccurwithinfivetotenbusinessdaysafterthesecondread.

- Oncefinaldecisionshavebeenmade,copyeditorswillhaveoneweektoproofread.

- ByApril1stthejournalsubmissionsshouldbefinalizedforpublication.

- AnticipatedjournalpublishdateismidtolateApril.

Distribution and Open-Access Policy

Thejournalwillbepublishedandarchivedonadedicatedwebsite:cucjrPublisher Publications-Issuu.

All submissions have been published under the protection and acceptanceofaCreativeCommonsLicense,allowinguseanddistributionsolong astheoriginalworksareappropriatelycitedandacknowledged.

Open-AccessPublicationDefinition:

I. Author(s) grant to all potential readersandusersthefreeandperpetualrighttoaccess, distribute, and publicly display their work(s) in any digital format, subject to appropriatecitationandacknowledgement.

Academic Integrity Policy

Crime and Ethos: Carleton Undergraduate Criminology Journal Review demands academicintegrityforallauthorsandsubmissions.TheCentreforAcademicIntegrity(1999) definesthisas“acommitmenteveninthefaceofadversitytofivefundamentalvalues:honesty, trust,fairness,respect,andresponsibility”.

Allformsofacademicdishonestyaredestructivetothevaluesandmandateofthe journal.Formsofconductthatviolatethejournal'sstandardsofacademicintegrityarelisted below.Thislistisnotcomprehensivenorexhaustive.

1. Plagiarism

a. Definedaspresenting,whetherintentionallyornot,theideas,expressionsof ideas,orworkofothersasone’sown.Thisincludesreproducingorparaphrasing portionsofsomeoneelse’spublishedorunpublishedmaterial,regardlessof source,andwithoutpropercitationorreference.

2. Co-operationorcollaboration

a. Definedasco-operationorcollaborationfromanotherthatisnotlistedasan authororcontributor.

3. Misrepresentation

a. Authorsshallnotsubmitorpresentfalseassignments,research,credentialsor otherdocumentsormisrepresentmaterialfactsforacademicpurposes.This includesbutisnotlimitedtofalsifiedresearchordata,falsifiedfactsor references,falsifiedadmissionsdocuments,falsifiedtranscripts,etc.

4. Impersonation

a. Itisaviolationforanyindividualtoimpersonateanotherpersonforthepurpose ofgainingacademicadvantage.

5. ObstructionandInterference

a. Itisaviolationforauthorstoobstructorotherwiseinterferewiththescholarly activitiesofanotherinordertogainunfairacademicadvantage.Thisincludesbut isnotlimitedtointerferingwithortamperingdataorfiles.

6. KnowinglyAssistintheViolationoftheseAcademicIntegrityStandards

CrimeandEthos

a. Itisaviolationtoassistanyoneinviolatingthesestandards.Claimingignorance orconfusionabouttheacademicintegritystandardsdoesnotexcuseanindividual frombeingresponsibleforviolationofthesestandards.

Ifasuspectedviolationoccurs,theauthorandtheirworkwillbereviewedbythecurrent Editor-in-ChiefandDeputyEditor.Ifthereissufficientevidenceofaviolation,thestudentwill becontactedandprovidedwiththedetails.Ameetingwillthenoccurtoprovidetheauthoran opportunitytorespondtotheallegations,seekclarificationoftheevidence,helpstudents understandtheacademicintegritystandardsanddiscussthenextsteps.Wereservetherightto rejectallworkthatviolatestheseacademicintegritystandardsandplaceauthorsona probationaryperiod.Thegoalofthisprocessistoinvestigate,whilebeingeducationalinnature.
