Dear friends,

Greetings from Boulder! I’m excited to share with you the inaugural issue of Colorado Music, our greatly expanded annual compilation of news about the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music. Having recently completed my first year of service as dean, I’m particularly pleased to see in these pages the considerable accomplishments of our students, alumni, faculty, staff and supporters over the past 12 months.

The stories that follow come together to form a rich tapestry. I won’t preview them all here, but I do want to acknowledge the three special endowment gifts (see page 7) we celebrated during fall 2014, resulting from the inspiring generosity of local businessman Paul Eklund, CU-Boulder alumni Mike and Mikhy Ritter and the estate of the late Eugene D. Eaton, Jr., another alumnus. Transformational gifts all three, they have led to the renamed Eklund Opera Program, the launch of the Ritter Family Classical Guitar Program and initial planning to create the Eaton Chair in Baroque Music, a future faculty position.

I hope this publication reaches many of the college’s talented alumni. We have been making efforts in recent months to connect with our alumni locally, regionally and in a few targeted areas out of state; look for these activities to expand. We see our alumni as our greatest asset, and we’re eager to develop a vibrant and mutually beneficial relationship. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us—you’ll find instructions for submitting your news on page 25.

Much of my work over the past year has been to engage all of the college’s stakeholders in thinking about the future. In January, we launched a strategic planning process to help clarify our vision and identify the specific accomplishments we want to work toward in the coming years. A special marker in this regard is the college’s centennial, in 2020. When we get there, I expect we’ll be looking at an even stronger college, with distinctive new activities flowing from its history of excellence.

Work on the strategic plan is ongoing, and the areas we plan to pursue are taking shape within five broad categories, or pillars, of the plan: The College of Music Advantage Building on its rich history and substantial record of achievement, the college will increasingly define itself by the unique advantage it offers to its students.

Realizing Music’s Interdisciplinary Potential Leveraging the resources on our campus and in the region, the college will form meaningful partnerships with other CU-Boulder colleges and schools, as well as external organizations, to identify new, well-structured areas of inquiry for students and faculty.

A National and International Leader Participating fully in the mission of the University of Colorado Boulder, the college will position itself as an influential leader, significantly advancing the conversation about music’s relevance and importance in the 21st century.

Building a Robust Network of Partners Recognizing that alliances and collaborations strengthen the College of Music community and create additional opportunities for students and faculty, the college will develop mutually beneficial relationships with a wide range of local, regional, national and international partners.

Promoting Diversity Appreciating that music knows no boundaries defined by race or ethnicity, socioeconomic standing or other factors, the college will expand the diversity of its student body and faculty, and work to attract more international students.

These pillars carry considerable implications, but we believe we can position the College of Music as one of the most consequential programs in the nation. Look for more details about the strategic plan in the coming months.

NEW LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT

Dean Robert Shay: the College of Music advantage “The College of Music advantage is our EDGE. It’s what sets us apart.”

Changes are afoot at CU-Boulder’s College of Music, thanks to the vision of its new leader.

Dean Robert Shay, a veteran music administrator with 15 years’ experience, began his tenure here in August 2014. “It’s great to be back in Colorado,” he says, reflecting on his two summers as a voice and conducting student at the Aspen Music Festival and School in the 80s. “The College of Music and the quality of its programs have long held my interest.”

When Dean Emeritus Dan Sher retired, Shay made his move.

“Over the years, I took note of my predecessor’s leadership, his success and the impact he had,” he says. “In the back of my mind, I always thought I’d pursue an appointment here, if the opportunity arose.

“This is one of the great music schools in the country with a history of distinguished faculty and highly accomplished students. In terms of engaging the philanthropic community and building support for world-class music programs, what has been accomplished here is unique among public universities,” he says. “Also impressive is the level of engagement and commitment from our Advisory Board to the betterment of the whole.

“The excitement for this place is palpable.”

That said, Shay is inspired by opportunities to strengthen and expand on the College of Music’s traditions of excellence.

“There’s a collective realization that, while we’ve been highly successful, we haven’t thought enough about the future. It’s time to pull back the curtain and reveal our aspirations for the next 10 years.”

To achieve a common vision for the College of Music among faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters, Shay launched a strategic planning process in January. A number of facultydriven task forces then convened to delve more deeply into agreed-upon areas of improvement—from diversity, technology and identifying professional settings for students outside the classroom and abroad, to growing alumni engagement and positioning the college as a leader in national and international spheres of influence.

“Our greatest chance for success is to rally around a clear vision,” says Shay, who previously served as Director of the University of Missouri School of Music, and as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Longy School of Music. “Buy-in builds

momentum outward from the planning and visioning process. I expect this will lead us to articulate what I am now calling the College of Music advantage.

“Put another way, the College of Music advantage is our edge.

It’s what sets us apart. At our core, we offer an amazingly rich, traditional education. But we also provide many layers of innovative and hands-on experiences that aren’t necessarily happening elsewhere.”

Indeed, the Entrepreneurship Center for Music is one of the first programs in the country to provide business and careeroriented acumen for musicians. Shay cites technology and new media studies programs, and the college’s focus on creating structured interdisciplinary opportunities. “We want to prepare our students for a wide range of successful outcomes,” he says.

“I’ve never met anyone who regretted receiving musical training, but we also want to encourage and support students who might be interested in multimedia art or sound design, for example, as well as careers that reside outside traditional music fields.”

This year, Shay anticipates completion of the college’s strategic planning process, including well-defined directives to realize the College of Music advantage—with a particular emphasis on alumni engagement and student diversity. “Boulder and the CU-Boulder campus aren’t especially diverse,” he says.

“We want to change that by ensuring pathways to success for underrepresented students and well-qualified international students. We want this to be a place without boundaries.”

In addition to his responsibilities as dean, Robert Shay continues his passion for teaching and research, and building on his wellreceived writings about the music of Henry Purcell and 17thcentury England. Shay earned a doctorate and a master’s degree in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s in choral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music and a bachelor’s in vocal performance from Wheaton College.

COLLEGE OF MUSIC GIFTS ADVANCE THE MISSION Ritter Family Classical Guitar Program

Michele “Mikhy” and Michael Ritter met and fell in love at CUBoulder—and they always wanted to give back to the place that brought them together. Their trailblazing gift to the College of Music’s classical guitar program, combined with a commitment from the Office of the Chancellor, endowed and named the program.

The Ritter Family Classical Guitar Program is directed by Assistant Professor Nicolò Spera, who launched it four years ago. “The gift allows us to invite guest artists to the College of Music, as well as support the International Guitar Festival, fund student travel to competitions and other festivals and ensure overall program support,” Spera says.

The Ritters’ dream is for CU-Boulder to be known as the premier classical guitar program in the world. “I really think it’s a possibility given the scope of Nicolò’s vision, the support for innovation at the College of Music, and the excellence of the program, faculty and students,” Mikhy says.

Indeed, Spera was able to enlist his former teachers, Lorenzo Micheli and Matteo Mela, together known as SoloDuo, as permanent visiting artists at the College of Music.

Eklund Opera Program

As a child growing up in San Diego, Paul Eklund was introduced to outdoor opera productions at the Starlight Theatre. Years later, the longtime Boulder resident and businessman attended a CU Opera production of “La bohème.” He says it was like a rebirth. “Music is a constant for me, now—it makes for a fuller life,” Eklund says.

Eklund’s transformative gift to opera at CU-Boulder, combined with additional university commitments, established a $2 million endowment for the program. “Paul’s investment is a bold statement that says the arts are important,’” says Leigh Holman, who directs the Eklund Opera Program.

Funding from the endowment will help support three full productions per year, an opera scenes program for students and the CU New Opera Workshop (CU NOW), a program that features acclaimed opera composers working with CU-Boulder singers and composers on new pieces. Additionally, the Eklund Opera Program ensures that students receive consistent experiences, positioning them for professional success.

Eaton Chair in Baroque Music

Although the late Eugene D. Eaton, Jr., didn’t study music at CU-Boulder, he attended many concerts as an economics student in the 60s. He developed a lifelong interest in Baroque music, even “attending” live performances at the College of Music from more than 3,000 miles away—thanks to video-streaming technology.

When Eaton passed away in 2013, he gave the university a $6 million gift, $2.3 million of which endowed a chair in Baroque music.

“Gene valued CU-Boulder as much for the opportunity to hear great live music as he did for the excellent training he received through his studies in economics,” says Dean Emeritus Dan Sher, who shared with Eaton recordings by Professor of Early Music Elizabeth Farr and the Takács Quartet.

“This gift is a real testament to the impact of music, which in this case crossed disciplinary lines and clearly touched the life of a former CU-Boulder student in a lasting and meaningful way,” says Dean Robert Shay.

GUEST ARTISTS Kronos Quartet: students learn new music from the masters The Kronos Quartet, known for its creative reimaginings of the string quartet, visited CU-Boulder for the second time in November 2014 as part of CU Presents’ Artist Series. The chance to have them return and work with student performers and composers was too good to pass up.

“On their first visit, they were so involved in teaching our students that they nearly missed their flight out of town,” says Joan Braun, Assistant Dean for Concerts and Strategic Communications at the College of Music and CU Presents Executive Director.

“It’s unique for our students to have such meaningful contact with these professionals,” Braun says. The Kronos Quartet taught master classes, each member—David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt and Sunny Yang—working individually with a quartet of students; Kronos also conducted a composition seminar with Associate Professor of Composition Daniel Kellogg.

“They take their role as educators very seriously,” says Braun.

“They view themselves as helping to create the next generation of musicians and composers.”

Braun says it was a profound experience. “It was both memorable and meaningful to have an event like this on a college campus, where people learn about current and historical events. It demonstrates that art is at the center of helping us make sense of those experiences as a culture.”

To mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War-I, Kronos commissioned a work of music and film by Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov and filmmaker Bill Morrison. They performed “Beyond Zero: 1914-1918” at Macky Auditorium in October 2014.

Indeed, that’s what Kronos do so well. They understand the role of new music in keeping the art form relevant—a shared goal with the College of Music. “The Kronos take our reputation with them wherever they go. It’s a way for us to be known to a broader circle,” says Braun.

Alarm Will Sound, an internationally acclaimed new music ensemble, read and performed four student pieces in February in the ATLAS Black Box Theater.

Central City Opera Music Director John Baril presented a class on auditioning for voice majors in April.

Philip V. Bohlman, ethnomusicologist at the University of Chicago, presented a musicology colloquium on “The Rise and Fall of Nationalism in Music” in March.

In October, Matthew Brown, Professor of Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music, presented a colloquium about an audiovisual chamber ensemble arrangement of Richard Strauss’ “Salome,” guided by a comic book version of the opera by artist and writer P. Craig Russell.

In November 2014, Evan Chambers, Professor of Composition at the University of Michigan, offered composition lessons and presented about his music.

Michael Clayville, trombonist with Alarm Will Sound and the Novus trombone quartet, presented a master class in February.

As part of Colorado Clarinet Days in September 2014, Larry Combs, former Principal Clarinet, Chicago Symphony, performed and conducted a master class.

College of Music alumnus Matthew Eckenhoff, Second Horn, Louisiana Philharmonic, held a master class in March during a stint performing with the Colorado Symphony.

In April, David Cooper, Principal Horn, Dallas Symphony, taught lessons, performed and led a full brass reading of Richard Strauss’ “Ein Heldenleben.”

College of Music alumnus Michael Fiday, Associate Professor of Composition at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, visited the composition seminar in April to discuss his music.

Simon Crawford-Phillips, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London, conducted a piano master class in March.

Michelle DeYoung, internationally known classical vocalist, conducted an opera master class in October 2014.

In April, Daniel DiCenso, musicologist, medievalist, Gates Scholar and Assistant Professor of Music at the College of the Holy Cross, presented a musicology colloquium titled “Beyond the Homeric Model: Chant Transmission as a Literate Process.”

Composer and President of the Aspen Music Festival and School Alan Fletcher discussed his own music and perspectives on text setting in April.

Rachael Gates, author of “The Voice: An Owner’s Manual,” held a vocal health and pedagogy class in April.

In April, Alan Huckleberry, Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Iowa and Director of the Piano Pedagogy YouTube project, presented a master class and lecture.

In April, David Locke, ethnomusicologist and Professor of Music at Tufts University, presented a musicology colloquium and three courses on ethnomusicology and theory.

Eric Mandat, a leading clarinetist and composer, performed and helped judge a new music competition during Colorado Clarinet Days in September 2014.

Guitar duos SoloDuo (Lorenzo Micheli and Matteo Mela) and the Assad Brothers (Sergio and Odair Assad), along with lutenist Nigel North, performed at the second CU-Boulder International Guitar Festival & Competition in February.

In September 2014, composer and pianist Malek Jandali hosted a musicology colloquium on “Music, Cultural Heritage and Syrian Peace Advocacy.”

In April 2014, Jeffrey Kallberg, Professor of Music and Associate Dean for Arts and Letters at the University of Pennsylvania, presented a musicology colloquium on Frédéric Chopin and guest lectured on “Editing Music for Performers and Scholars.”

Kevin Kenner, Professor of Piano at London’s Royal College of Music, presented a master class in November 2014.

Pianist Forrest Kinney offered a recital, workshop and master class in October 2014. His visit was co-sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association.

In February, Heath Matthews and others from MakeMusic, creators of the Finale music notation software, led a discussion about notation and upcoming innovations in their software.

Carol Leone, Chair of the Keyboard Department and Associate Professor of Piano at Southern Methodist University, presented a recital in April.

In March, Boulder-based piano teacher and licensed occupational therapist Natalie McKechnie conducted a workshop on teaching piano to young special-needs students.

Boston Conservatory piano faculty member Michael Lewin presented a master class and recital, and helped judge the piano preliminaries of the Ekstrand Competition in October 2014.

Craig Mulcahy, Principal Trombonist, National Symphony Orchestra, presented a master class in April with support from a Roser Visiting Artist grant.

In November 2014, Yale University music theorist Ian Quinn presented a colloquium on statistical analysis and audience perception in early music.

In February, Anton Nelv, Priscilla Pond Flawn Regents Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the University of Texas at Austin, presented a master class and recital.

In February, John Nix, Associate Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Texas at San Antonio, gave a vocal pedagogy presentation.

Nancy Rogers, Associate Professor of Music Theory at Florida State University, presented a colloquium in March on how college fight songs can inform undergraduate composition projects. Additionally, she led a theory workshop for high school music teachers.

In April, Chicago-based voice teacher Rebecca Schorsch conducted a musical theater master class.

In October 2014, Peter Steiner, acting Principal Trombone, Colorado Symphony, taught a master class.

This spring, he played a guest recital with CU-Boulder’s Hsiao-Ling Lin.

Denise Tryon, Fourth Horn, Philadelphia Orchestra, taught lessons, gave master classes and performed a recital during a three-day residency in November 2014.

Jazz saxophonist and composer Stan Sulzmann worked with students during a week-long residency in September 2014, culminating in a big band performance at Denver’s DazzleJazz.

In November 2014, Heather Willoughby, ethnomusicologist and Associate Professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea, presented a colloquium titled “Sonic Constructions of the Ideal Woman in Korean P’ansori.”

In January, Victor Rosenbaum, piano faculty at the New England Conservatory and the Mannes College of Music, presented a master class.

This year’s Robert and Ruth Fink Lecture at the American Music Research Center featured banjo-playing sensation, award-winning author and Grammy Award nominee Stephen Wade. He explored through live music, projected images and spoken narrative the personal stories behind the individuals described in his recent book, “The Beautiful Music All Around Us: Field Recordings and the American Experience.” Wade also lectured to several classes during his visit.

NEW FACULTY Matthew Chellis, Assistant Professor of Voice

Matthew Chellis, who originally trained as an actor and dancer at the University of Michigan, also holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. Most recently, he served on the faculty at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Chellis has performed with the New York City Opera, Frankfurt Opera and Washington Opera among other companies around the world; and he’s played leading roles in “Die Zauberflöte,” “Don Giovanni” and “The Barber of Seville,” to name a few. Indeed, Chellis is known as one of the most versatile tenors in the United States.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be at such a well-respected institution as CU-Boulder,” he says, describing the ambiance at the College of Music as inspiring. “The camaraderie and collegial support are exceptional, and I’m thrilled to be teaching among such talented people.”

Matthew Dockendorf, Instructor of Conducting and Music Education and Assistant Director of Bands

Matthew Dockendorf conducts the Campus and Concert bands, assists with the Golden Buffalo Marching Band, and directs the men’s and women’s Basketball Band. He also teaches courses in music education and, over the summer, co-directed the CU-Boulder Summer Music Academy. “My first year at CU-Boulder has been an incredible experience,” he says. “I feel so fortunate to have joined a world-class faculty, and to interact with talented students on a daily basis.”

Dockendorf holds a doctorate in conducting from Michigan State University, a master’s in conducting from Ohio State University and a bachelor’s in music education from the University of Minnesota. At Michigan State University, he wrote drills and arrangements for the Spartan Marching Band and Spartan Brass. He also conducted the Campus Band and guest conducted the Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, Concert Band and Musique 21.

Dockendorf is enjoying his time in Boulder. “The culture here is fantastic, with so many great restaurants, beautiful weather and diversity of people who have relocated here from across the country,” he says. “I am proud to call myself a Buff!”

Jennifer Hayghe, Associate Professor of Piano For Jennifer Hayghe, it was only a matter of time before her professional journey brought her to Boulder. “I’ve been a fan of the College of Music since my first visit here in 2003,” says the Juilliard-trained classical pianist. At the Juilliard School, Hayghe was the last student to study with legendary pianist Adele Marcus, and won every award possible for a Juilliard pianist— including the William Petschek Debut Award, which resulted in her recital at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. Since then, she’s made solo and orchestral appearances around the world.

Hayghe also specializes in chamber music, performing in several major series including the Museum of Modern Art’s “Summergarden” and Bargemusic in New York. Additionally, she’s been featured in live performances on National Public Radio and other classical music radio programs, and she released a solo recording, “Paintings from the Piano.”

In addition to being a faculty member at Ithaca College, Hayghe has conducted master classes at the Manhattan School of Music and the New York University Piano Master Class Series. Other previous faculty appointments include her work at Louisiana State University as the Barineau Endowed Professor of Piano and Keyboard Area Coordinator. At CU-Boulder, Hayghe’s primary focus is graduate work. “While I’m looking forward to continuing to work with undergraduate students, it’s great to return to a setting where I’m working with graduate and doctoral students, too,” she says.

Paul McKee, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies, Trombone

After years of performing in Boulder, Paul McKee joined the Thompson Jazz Studies Program. The trombonist says he’s thrilled to collaborate with the jazz faculty: “I’ve known my CU-Boulder jazz-studies colleagues for many years, and have eagerly anticipated the opportunity to teach and play with them on a regular basis.”

Previously, McKee served on the jazz faculties at DePaul University, Youngstown State University, Northern Illinois University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Florida State University.

McKee earned a bachelor’s in music education from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s in music from the University of Texas at Austin. He’s played on Grammy Award-nominated recordings with Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd, and his critically acclaimed recording “Gallery” features performances by Carl Fontana, Bobby Shew, Tim Ries and Ron Stout.

Andrea Ramsey, Associate Director of Choral Studies and Assistant Professor of Conducting

For Andrea Ramsey, there’s no better place to make music than Boulder. “I feel perpetually inspired,” she says.

“You can’t look at the Flatirons without feeling fortunate to be in this beautiful place with so much to offer.”

Ramsey—who previously taught choral methods and undergraduate conducting at Ohio State University—says she and Director of Choral Studies Gregory Gentry are excited about the energy in the choral arena, and are eager to continue with outreach efforts in the state, region and beyond. “It all starts with going out and engaging with potential students. Every person wants to be valued and affirmed, and that’s how I hope to help in furthering the reach and strength of our choral program.”

Ramsey, who earned a doctorate in music education from Michigan State University, is also an award winner of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). She’s published more than 70 compositions and is composer-in-residence of Allegro Choirs of Kansas City.

Jeremy Reger, Senior Instructor, Vocal Coach Beyond the natural beauty of the Boulder area, it’s the creativity and community of students and faculty that brought Jeremy Reger to CU-Boulder. “There’s something special going on here,” says the vocal coach. “There’s an exceptional spirit of community among faculty and students, and it’s exciting to be a part of it.”

Previously, Reger served as Director of Keyboard Studies and Collaborative Arts at Christopher Newport University, Virginia. He’s worked with some of the top vocal performers and coaches in the country at the Minnesota Opera, Indiana Opera Theater, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Ann Arbor Opera. Last summer, he coached and performed at the Opera Studio de Recife, Brazil.

Reger’s performances also include stints with the Virginia Symphony, the Williamsburg Symphonia and the Cantabile Singers Art Song Project. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music, a master’s degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a doctorate at the University of Michigan.

Reger says CU-Boulder was a natural choice for his next artistic adventure. “It’s the intersection of many art forms, and it’s thrilling to take inspiration from the amazing surroundings to help keep the repertoire vital.”

David Requiro, Assistant Professor of Cello

David Requiro came to CU-Boulder from the University of Puget Sound where he was the Cordelia WikarskiMiedel Artist-in-Residence in cello and chamber music.

Requiro’s artist faculty appointments further include the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival, Giverny Chamber Music Festival, Innsbrook Music Festival and Institute, Maui Classical Music Festival and Olympic Music Festival. As a member of the Baumer String Quartet, he co-founded the annual Monterey Chamber Music Workshop. He has also toured with the conductorless chamber ensemble East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO).

Actively involved in contemporary music, Requiro was a guest artist at the 2010 Amsterdam Cello Biennale and has collaborated with composers Krzysztof Penderecki and Bright Sheng, as well as with members of the Aspen Percussion Ensemble.

Requiro won first prize at the Naumburg International Violoncello Competition, the Washington International String Competition and the Irving M. Klein International String Competition. He has performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra and several other orchestras in venues like Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Requiro also completed a cycle of the Beethoven Sonatas for cello and piano at the Phillips Collection in Washington. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music and a master’s degree at the University of Michigan.

Harumi Rhodes, Assistant Professor of Violin Renowned violinist Harumi Rhodes brings years of international performance experience to the College of Music.

“I feel honored to be joining such a distinguished team of artists and faculty,” she says. “The collegial atmosphere and breathtakingly beautiful campus are ideal for creative thinking and growth.”

Previously, Rhodes was Assistant Professor of Violin and String Area Coordinator at Syracuse University, as well as violin faculty at the Juilliard School. An advocate of contemporary music, she is a frequent guest artist with Music from Copland House and has recorded Milton Babbitt’s Sixth String Quartet on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. She has also collaborated with numerous composers, including Leon Kirchner and Richard Danielpour.

As a member of the Boston Chamber Music Society and founding member of the Naumburg Award-winning ensemble Trio Cavatina, Rhodes is a sought-after performer. And like Requiro, she has also toured with ECCO. Rhodes earned a bachelor’s degree at the Juilliard School and a master’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music.

EMERITI FACULTY Dean Emeritus Dan Sher: a legacy of leadership Since his retirement as dean in 2013, Dean Emeritus Dan Sher has been traveling, while remaining a constant champion of the College of Music and a member of the keyboard faculty. We asked him to share more about his activities since being named Dean Emeritus earlier this year.

Last fall, having been granted a sabbatical, I set my goals and aimed high: I wanted to learn what some of the major conservatories on our East Coast and in Europe are doing to prepare their students for a fulfilling career in music.

Drawing on my connections to these institutions in the course of my 30 years in administration, I found myself warmly welcomed everywhere I traveled, and engaged in wonderful conversations that helped me gain an invaluable perspective on what the future of our profession might hold.

Of course, with a finite budget and a one-semester time frame, some difficult choices had to be made. My wife, Boyce, and I developed a wonderful itinerary: New York, Boston, London, Manchester, Helsinki, The Hague, Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna.

Judith Glyde: ever an educator

Emerita Judith Glyde, we ended our European travels in Budapest where the Liszt Academy was hosting the Association of European Conservatories annual meeting.

In discussions with presidents, deans, directors and principals, I learned of their resolve to provide students with entrepreneurial skills and awareness to become thoughtful citizens engaged in society. Most of these institutions had already put in place entrepreneurship centers, so you can imagine my sense of pride in sharing with them that we’d developed the first Entrepreneurship Center for Music. Leaders at these institutions are finding that they have to be more innovative in their approach to developing new streams of revenue, which translates into doing the same for their students.

This is an exciting and dynamic time for all music training programs. Against the backdrop of what I learned and experienced during our magnificent journey, I have followed with great interest, and am excited to play a part, in the comprehensive strategic planning process under Dean Shay’s wise and thoughtful leadership. There is every reason to look forward to a most promising future for the College of Music!

For the past 20 years, Professor Emerita Judith Glyde has spent part of every year in Italy, teaching cello and performing chamber music. Since retiring from the College of Music in May 2014, Glyde has lived a renaissance of her own, working in Florence, Tuscany—the region that gave new life to western culture during the Renaissance. She shared with us what she’s accomplished, and what she still hopes to do.

The program is primarily for CU-Boulder music students who want to study and perform in Italy. With so few music-focused study-abroad programs in Europe, we fill a void, offering music students an opportunity to have this experience in Florence.

It’s a passion and a thrill for me to see these students grow as musicians in the very place where the expression of human creativity was reborn.

To me, there’s no better place in the world to study art than Florence. You’re surrounded in a visual and eloquent way by the human creativity and imagination that was the Renaissance.

At a time when we need to rethink how we support the arts, it’s eye-opening for music students to be in the city where the Medicis—the most prolific arts patrons in European history— helped make the rebirth of the arts possible.

This June, the program welcomed CU-Boulder alumni from the United States and Europe to Florence for a weekend in collaboration with the CU-Boulder Alumni Association and Chancellor DiStefano. It was a treat to meet these alumni, to help them reconnect with the university and hear our students in concert. It was wonderful to show them around this beautiful city. We hope to repeat the event in 2016.

Since 1998, I’ve been traveling to Italy to play in chamber music festivals. Five years ago, a friend and I began to formulate an idea for a study-abroad program for young musicians in Florence. The discussions eventually led to the “Music and Performing Arts— Renaissance in the XXI Century” program, and the development of our non-profit association, Florentia Consort.

It was an honor to receive word from Dean Shay that my colleagues had chosen to name me Professor Emerita. To be acknowledged and recognized by my colleagues at the university is very special, indeed. I am proud to be a part of the College of Music community, and proud to continue collaborating with the talented faculty, staff and students in the coming years.

Elissa Guralnick: professor of “music writing”

It’s rare to find a subject that Elissa Guralnick hasn’t addressed in a writing workshop. In 41 years as a Professor of English at the University of Colorado Boulder, she has taught everything from freshman composition to graduate-level science writing. For 17 of those years, Guralnick co-directed the University Writing Program.

Additionally, she conducted writing workshops for CU-Boulder faculty in all disciplines.

But the College of Music community knows her as part of the musicology faculty—the professor who coached graduate and undergraduate students on the finer points of writing about music.

Though her degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Yale are in English literature, Guralnick has always been drawn to music. A serious amateur pianist, she believes literature and music lend themselves to close reading. In both disciplines, she

argues, “every detail has significance, the significance is always debatable and the debates—whether in performance, writing, conversation or contemplation—keep the disciplines alive.”

Since retiring in December, Guralnick has been working on a book titled “Performing on the Page: Finding and Expressing the You-of-It in Writing about Music.” After years of coaching students through academic papers and essays, she found that what’s often missing in academic writing is the “You-of-It,” by which she means the writer’s own reasoned perspective on the subject at hand.

“When called upon to write, educated people often seize upon the ‘it,’ as if the ‘you’ no longer mattered. But it does. Immensely.

Absent a ‘you,’ papers tend to be boring, self-evident or both,” says Guralnick.

In nominating Guralnick for a Boulder Faculty Assembly Excellence Award for Teaching last year, Associate Professor of Musicology Rebecca Maloy said, “She begins with the premise that each student, as a musician, has a valuable perspective on music and a unique relationship with particular musical works.”

Guralnick is grateful to the College of Music faculty and students for their “unfailing collegiality.” She hopes to continue learning with them about the pleasures and complexities of music.

Especially, though, she enjoys spending more time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Always a doer, Lehnert says her father described her as fiercely independent and eager to learn—a fitting description for a young girl who performed her first public recital at age 8. A couple years later, Lehnert won the Los Angeles Music Teachers Association Competition playing Felix Mendelssohn’s Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 14.

Doris Lehnert: “students were my top priority”

Pianist Doris Lehnert earned many accolades in her career as a musician. A child prodigy and prominent soloist, she went on to become a beloved teacher at CU-Boulder’s College of Music for nearly four decades.

Since her retirement in April, Lehnert continues to teach privately, as well as perform with her husband—Oswald “Ozzi” Lehnert, also a longtime College of Music faculty member and former conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic—and their son, Ozzi, Jr., a cellist. Indeed, the trio recently performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Boulder Symphony. “It’s such an incredible piece that we love playing together,” says Lehnert, who will celebrate her 79th birthday in November. The Lehnerts also look forward to international performance opportunities, including a gig in Madrid, Spain, next spring.

Lehnert is particularly thrilled to focus her energies on causes she’s passionate about, including playing benefits for nonprofit organizations like the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless.

During her career, Lehnert received the Governor’s award for teaching, the student-nominated SOAR award from the University of Colorado and the Presidential Scholar’s Recognition Award.

Her students, too, have won countless local, state, national and international awards and competitions. And, as one of the foremost teachers in the United States, Lehnert traveled across the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia to give master classes, recitals and concerts—not only as a soloist, but also performing with her husband and son.

Lehnert hopes former students and community members will support the Doris Pridonoff Lehnert Piano Scholarship created in her honor. “Both Ozzi and I couldn’t have made it without scholarships when we were starting out,” she says. “This is an opportunity to support young musicians who need it most.”

Adds Lehnert, “I’m forever grateful for each and every one of my students. They have no idea how much they’ve meant to me.

When I went through tough times, my students and my love for teaching carried me through.”

FACULTY NOTES The American Music Research Center (AMRC) welcomed several new members to its Advisory Board, including new Head of the Howard B. Waltz Music Library, Stephanie Bonjack; Laurie Sampsel, former music library faculty head, will remain on the board. Additionally, Alan Cass, Founder and Curator of the Glenn Miller Archive, retired in July after more than 40 years at its helm. In February, the AMRC was featured at the Music Library Association’s national annual meeting with Director Tom Riis presenting an overview of the center’s mission and its many collections.

The Entrepreneurship Center for Music (ECM) continues to expand its offerings with the introduction in 2014 of a Certificate in Music Entrepreneurship.

Open to undergraduate music majors, the certificate pairs a minor in business with courses in music career skills and entrepreneurship, comprising one of the most robust programs of its kind in the country. As of this fall, outstanding students in the certificate program are also eligible for the Entrepreneurial Scholars Program, which awards $2,000 scholarships to defray the costs of the business minor. The ECM has also been deeply involved in the College of Music’s strategic planning process and is keen to pursue our vision for increased impact for our students and alums.

This spring, Associate Professor of Music Education Margaret H. Berg presented at the International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education and the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) conference. She also taught a string pedagogy workshop for public school teachers at the University of Maryland, and a violin studio class at the University of Miami. Additionally, Berg presented a paper for the Center for Music Education Research and conducted the 2015 Jefferson County All-County Elementary Orchestra. She continues to serve on the ASTA National Executive Board, and completed her term as Secretary/Treasurer of the American Educational Research Association Music Education SIG.

This year, three College of Music faculty and staff were honored by the Boulder Faculty Assembly: Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies Jim Austin received the Excellence Award for Leadership and Service; Music Theory Instructor Philip Chang received the Faculty Recognition Award; and Elissa Guralnick, Professor of English in the musicology department, received the Excellence Award for Teaching.

Musicology Lecturer Michael Barnett and Assistant Professor of Violin Charles Wetherbee are in the postproduction phase of a new full-length album with materials composed by Barnett. Their group, Terminal Degree, will premiere the work at the ATLAS Black Box Theater. CU-Boulder students Matthew Farquharson (violin), Vela Farquharson (cello), Avery Johnson (cello) and Coire Geare (electric bass) round out the ensemble.

Associate Dean for Graduate Studies Steven Bruns won the 2013-14 Outstanding Faculty Graduate Advising Award.

A doctoral seminar, “Editing Music for Scholars and Performers,” grew out of Carlo Caballero’s work on a critical edition of Gabriel Fauré’s two piano quintets for the “Complete Works of Gabriel Fauré” published by Bärenreiter-Verlag. Caballero, Associate Professor of Musicology and Erma Mantey Faculty Fellow, also delivered two research papers in the past year, including at a conference at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in Australia. In April, Caballero attended a symposium in Biel, Switzerland, to present new research on ballet in opera.

Assistant Professor of Voice Matthew Chellis performed recitals this summer in Shanghai, Dalian, Hefei, Wuxi and XuZhou, China.

Chellis also presented two vocal master classes at Hefei Anhui University and XuZhou Normal University, and managed the fifth summer season of the Up North Vocal Institute he founded in northern Michigan, a four-week summer vocal training program for 20 young singers from the United States, Mexico and Canada.

In addition to his role as Principal Oboe with the Colorado Symphony, Senior Instructor of Oboe Peter Cooper soloed this year with the Greeley Philharmonic and Pueblo Symphony. He also presented master classes and recitals at several universities, including Arizona State University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as well as the International Double Reed Society conference at New York University. This summer, he played Principal Oboe for Grand Teton Music Festival and taught at Rocky Ridge Music Center.

Along with violinist William Terwilliger, Professor of Piano Andrew Cooperstock performed at a CU-Boulder alumni outreach event in New York City. Known as Opus Two, the duo in 2014 released a CD of Gershwin pieces from which they played at the event. Additionally, Cooperstock served as the convention artist at the Mu Phi Epsilon International Conference in Sacramento, and judged for the Los Angeles Young Musicians International Competition and Jefferson Symphony Concerto Competition.

Cooperstock also performed at numerous venues across the United States and abroad.

Associate Professor of Piano Pedagogy and Nationally Certified Teacher of Music Alejandro Cremaschi was the main guest clinician at the Oregon Music Teachers Association State Conference in June 2014, and he performed solo recitals in Kansas, Oklahoma and Argentina. Additionally, his research on the effect of an eye guide while sight playing—conducted with co-researchers in North Dakota, Florida and London— was published in “Proceedings of the Sempre MET2014: Researching Music, Education, Technology: Critical Insights.” Cremaschi also published an article on why students quit music lessons—co-authored with graduate students Elizabeth Leger, Nathan Smith and Ksenia Ilynikh—in the peer-reviewed eJournal of the Music Teachers National Association. His recording, “Tango: Body and Soul” with Trio Cordilleras, was released

by Meridian Records, and he was awarded the campus-wide Equity and Excellence Faculty Award in April.

Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium Michael Dunn toured Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, in October 2014 with the Fortress Brass Quintet. The tour included performances and master classes at a variety of venues, including the RimskyKorsakov Music Academy and the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace.

Lecturer Alexandra Eddy’s book, “Mirror of the Muses: Music as a Reflection of Culture in the Western Tradition,” was published in January. In addition to teaching, she continues to perform as a Baroque violinist with Opera Lafayette, a period-instrument ensemble focused on opera repertoire of the French 18th century and its precursors.

She also manages and performs at Bach Camp, the education offering of the Boulder Bach Festival.

Professor of Early Music Elizabeth Farr was appointed Director of Historical Performance Studies.

Thompson Jazz Studies Program Director John Gunther recently completed a European tour, performing and presenting master classes in Budapest, Leipzig, Berlin, Warsaw, Prague and Lisbon. He also performed as a soloist with the Sinfonietta Paris Chamber Orchestra, and with live electronics as part of “Media Live,” hosted by the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Additionally, he composed new works for violinist Lina Bahn and Throw Down or Shut Up! In January, he guest conducted the Colorado All-State Jazz Band.

As Artistic Director of Pendulum New Music, Hsing-ay Hsu orchestrated residencies with two world-famous CU Presents guests: the Kronos Quartet and Alarm Will Sound. Hsu further presented a piano master class in Paris at the Conservatoire Maurice Ravel in June 2014. In addition to her position as Artistic Director of Pendulum New Music, she is also the College Faculty Forum Chair for the Colorado State Music Teachers Association.

In November 2014, Professor of Bassoon Yoshiyuki Ishikawa represented the United States on the judge’s panel at the International Competition of the Moscow Conservatory for Winds and Percussion.

He joined performers from Russia, Serbia, Estonia, Denmark and Austria in presiding over the competition for musicians ages 16 to 33.

In December 2014, Associate Professor of Composition Daniel Kellogg and Associate Professor of Horn Michael Thornton recorded and performed Kellogg’s new horn trio, “A Glorious Morning,” at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. In March, Kellogg and librettist/tenor Bjorn Arvidsson premiered “Packer,” a one-act opera about the legendary Alferd Packer; and in May, the Yale Schola Cantorum—an elite chamber choir—presented the world premiere of Kellogg’s “Shout Joy!” at Yale’s Woolsey Hall and Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, and later toured the piece in Europe. This summer, Kellogg’s “Respiratus,” composed for Professor of Bassoon Yoshiyuki Ishikawa, premiered in Japan.

Professor of Piano David Korevaar released a CD of Paul Hindemith piano sonatas and Suite “1922,” Op. 26 on MSR Classics.

Other performance highlights in the past year include collaborations with the Boulder Ballet, Takács Quartet and violinist Keiko Urushihara, along with solo performances in the United States and Japan. Additionally, Korevaar collaborated with the Helander Dance Theater in Boulder and Broomfield on the original dance and theater piece “Frames.”

Associate Professor of Music Theory Daphne Leong published “Time’s ‘Suchness’ in Robert Morris’s ‘Clear Sounds’” in Perspectives of New Music; she also published on Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5 in “The String Quartets of Béla Bartók,” edited by Dániel Péter Biró and Harald Krebs, Oxford University Press 2014. Leong further presented at several conferences, including the Grawemeyer Award 30th Anniversary Conference and the Performance Studies Network International Conference at the University of Cambridge, England. Additionally, she premiered “For Daphne”—written for her by late Professor of Composition Richard Toensing—and featured with her quartet Throw Down or Shut Up! in Denver and Boulder. Leong received CU-Boulder’s LEAP Associate Professor Growth Grant for work on her book “Performing Knowledge: Performance and Analysis in Music of the 20th Century,” and she was elected Vice President of the Society for Music Theory.

Associate Professor of Music Theory Yonatan Malin was an Orion Guest Scholar at the University of Victoria, teaching and presenting research. He also gave a colloquium at Columbia University on Jewish Biblical chant, and presented a paper in the United Kingdom at a conference on the music of Jewish prayer. Malin completed a three-year term in 2015 as editor of Music Theory Online, the peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Music Theory.

Associate Professor of Musicology Rebecca Maloy received the Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award.

In March, Associate Professor of Voice and Opera and Vocal Coach Mutsumi Moteki gave a master class and presentation at the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University South Bend. In summer 2014, she performed and taught in Japan, and taught voice and piano students at the University of Miami’s Salzburg Summer Program. In addition to teaching and performing, Moteki is co-editing “Japanese Art Song Anthology”; its first volume was released in September 2014, with the second slated for release in January 2016. Moteki also received the Storm Bull Research Award.

In March, Associate Professor of Saxophone Tom Myer, along with three graduate students (JD Little, alto; Paul Zaborac, tenor; Stephanie Doctor, baritone), performed a new saxophone quartet at the Region 2 Saxophone Symposium at Northern Arizona University. Additionally, he premiered a new work, “Vultures,” in March 2014 with Associate Professor Carter Pann and doctoral student Justin Little at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference at the University of Illinois.

Associate Professor of Collaborative Piano Alexandra Nguyen taught at the Eastman School of Music in the spring of 2014 as a sabbatical replacement. She returned to Boulder in April to present the world premiere of Carter Pann’s two-piano concerto, “The Dutch Stonewall,” with pianist Margaret McDonald and the CU Symphony. Nguyen recently served as an adjudicator at Musicfest Northwest, as well as the Wyoming Music Teachers Association and the Music Guild of New Mexico Young Artists’ Competition.

She also performed a recital with bassoonist Peter Kolkay at the Saint Martin’s Church and Abbey Concert and Lecture Series, and visited Eastman again in October 2014 to perform during alumni weekend.

Associate Professor Carter Pann was commissioned by the Takács Quartet, and Justus and Elizabeth Schlichting, to write a piece honoring NancyBell Coe; String Quartet No. 2 “Operas” premiered at the ACE Gallery in Beverly Hills this spring. He also worked with the University of Michigan and Northwestern University wind symphonies on their spring premieres of his “Symphony for Winds: My Brother’s Brain.”

The past year for Andrea Ramsey, Associate Director of Choral Studies and Assistant Professor of Conducting, included guest conducting engagements in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Tennessee, as well as the Pacific International Choral Festival and adjudicating for the Vancouver Kiwanis Choral Festival. With 10 published choral works out this year, Ramsey worked with ensembles to premiere two new original works: “The Rising” for treble voices was commissioned by—and premiered at—the Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans; “Vision” was premiered at the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Salt Lake City by Waukee High School from Des Moines.

Associate Professor and Coordinator of Ethnomusicology Brenda Romero received the 2014 Equity and Excellence Faculty Award.

In January, Associate Professor of Musicology Laurie Sampsel stepped aside as head of the Howard B. Waltz Music Library to become a voting member of the College of Music faculty. Additionally, she chaired the local arrangements committee for the Music Library Association Conference, held in Denver in February.

Music Theory Instructor Kris Shaffer released “Open Music Theory,” an online, interactive textbook for college-level music theory courses—written in collaboration with Bryn Hughes and Brian Moseley—as an open source for students and instructors across the United States. This summer, he collaborated with the University of Oregon’s Associate Professor of Music Theory and Musicianship Stephen Rodgers, along with CU-Boulder music students Jordan Pyle and David Lonowski, on a digital analysis of Franz Schubert’s “Die Schöne Müllerin.”

In 2014, Associate Professor of Musicology Jeremy Smith presented a paper at the North American British Music Studies Association conference in Las Vegas where he also presided on a panel with two CU-Boulder alumni (Karyn Dawn Grapes, PhD ’12 and William Ross Hagen, PhD ’10) whose doctoral dissertations he advised.

Director of the Ritter Family Classical Guitar Program and Assistant Professor of Classical Guitar Nicolò Spera recorded CDs of works by two of his favorite composers: his own transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suites 4, 5 and 6 for the 10-string guitar Soundset Recordings and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano, Op. 152 for guitar and choir with the Evans Choir.

Assistant Professor of Music Education David A. Rickels received the Storm Bull Research Award. Rickels’ research includes innovating new ways of training music teachers using a Synchronized Video Feedback. In collaboration with Roosevelt University’s Head of Music Education Wesley Brewer, Rickels has also studied the impact of social media technology on the professional development of music teachers.

Rickels and Brewer presented their findings at the National Music Research and Teacher Education Conference in April 2014, and an article in Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education is forthcoming.

In 2014, Associate Professor of Clarinet Daniel Silver was on sabbatical performing recitals, and presenting master classes and teaching residencies in the United States and abroad. He spent one week working with two top youth orchestras, New Jersey Youth Symphony and New York City Interschool Orchestra. Silver participated in his 23rd year at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp and Festival in Michigan, and performed and taught at the Vianden International Music Festival and School in Luxembourg. He released a CD of Margaret Brouwer’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings with the Maia String Quartet.

Associate Professor of Horn Michael Thornton performed a horn trio at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in December 2014, along with Colorado Symphony Music Director Andrew Litton and Colorado Symphony Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams.

Additionally, Thornton traveled to Bulgaria for a solo performance with the New Philharmonic Orchestra in Sophia, and a chamber performance with Associate Professor of Collaborative Piano Margaret McDonald.

In January, Professor of Percussion Doug Walter played the culminating solo recital for the McCormick Marimba Festival. The program included premiere of two of Walter’s original compositions and five solo jazz improvisations.

Professor of Music Theory Keith Waters delivered a pair of lectures on jazz and popular music at the Graz University for the Performing Arts in Austria, and performed as jazz artist and clinician at the Elon University Jazz Festival this spring. He’s also an outside reader for a doctoral dissertation at the University of Glasgow. Additionally, Waters participated in the national podcast “New Books in Jazz” to discuss his award-winning book, “The Studio Recordings of Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68.”

Assistant Professor of Violin Charles Wetherbee received a Storm Bull Research Award. Wetherbee also recently performed in Japan and was invited to serve as the Concertmaster for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. This year, Wetherbee will travel to Tehran, Iran, to perform in the International Fajr Festival. On another note, Wetherbee’s daughter will apply to CU-Boulder next year; his two sons are already studying here.

The Takács Quartet, artists-in-residence at CU-Boulder since 1983, performed 80 concerts worldwide this past year, coached and presented master classes in North America and Europe and taught chamber music and individual lessons to students in Boulder. Some highlights include recordings for Hyperion of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57 with Marc-Andre Hamelin, Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 2, both of Leoš Janáček’s string quartets and Bedrich Smetana’s String Quartet No 1 in E minor (“From My Life”). The quartet also won the Wigmore Hall Medal, the first string quartet ever awarded this honor.

Other special events included a collaboration with actor Meryl Streep and novelist Philip Roth at Princeton University around his novel “Everyman” and Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor (“Death and the Maiden”); as well as performances of all of Béla Bartók’s string quartets, and appearances at the Ravinia and Edinburgh festivals and the Bath Mozartfest. Additionally, this summer marked the quartet’s third year of conducting an intensive string quartet program for students at the Music Academy of the West, and the continued hosting of the Altius Quartet in Boulder in an ongoing two-year program.

Champions of new opera

When College of Music alumni Jessica Kiger (BM ’06) and Nathan Brandwein (BM ’02) graduated—with vocal performance and piano performance degrees, respectively—they didn’t picture themselves offstage and behind the scenes. But one grad school job and a nod from a Juilliard professor later, they’re working at one of the premier opera venues in the world.

Kiger and Brandwein freelance for the Metropolitan Opera’s “Live in HD” broadcasts. Along with a team of videographers, editors, directors and producers, they bring world-class opera to cinemas around the world. Indeed, they’re on a mission to keep opera fresh and relevant. “The only way the art form survives is if we are entertaining and educating worldwide audiences about what’s going on at the highest level of achievement,” says Brandwein.

Among the few production staffers at “Live in HD” with an extensive background in music, Brandwein and Kiger are integral to each performance. Brandwein is a score consultant for the live broadcasts and audio-edit supervisor during postproduction. As a production associate, Kiger prepares musical scores for “HD” directors, and works as a script and score reader. “For me, it’s taking the text and making it musical in my head,” says Kiger. “Sometimes you have to go off script, and it’s important for the script reader to be able to follow along, so the associate director knows what’s next.”

Brandwein, who earned a doctorate in collaborative piano at Juilliard, says the success of “Live in HD”—in its 10th season across 70 countries—is due to the talent and dedication of the crew. “It’s a testament to this vision for opera. What you see is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the work that goes into the broadcast. Everybody—production assistants, camera operators, directors—is the best in the world at what they do.”

—Jessica Kiger Meanwhile, in addition to her work with the Met, Kiger is also leading the charge in New York’s new opera scene. In 2012, she became Executive Director and Producer of On Site Opera, which takes opera on the road, performing pieces in locations that give them new context. For example, the critically acclaimed company has produced Giovanni Paisiello’s “The Barber of Seville” in an Upper East Side mansion and Jean-Philippe Rameau’s “Pygmalion” at Madame Tussauds New York. “We’re making a case for intimate, immersive opera. More and more, I think that’s where the art form is going,” she says.

He says he owes his education at CU-Boulder for his success as a pianist ... and at the Met. “I studied a lot of theory, which is important in my career—especially when I’m working with directors at the Met. I can make sure they understand the music and how it’s constructed, and that foundation was laid at CU-Boulder. I’ll always be grateful for that.”

Kiger says she would never have ended up pursuing this path if it hadn’t been for the support of CU-Boulder faculty. “My teacher, Maggie Lattimore, told me she would support me and she believed in my talents no matter how I used them. That was really encouraging.”

Kiger’s next role is Project Manager with VisionIntoArt, a multimedia production company run by visionary composer Paola Prestini. Kiger continues to evolve with the opera world itself. “It’s been exciting to do a lot of different things, to challenge myself in different ways and see what sticks.”

Carrying the torch for the arts and humanities “We want to innovate, think expansively and create in ways The long and winding road has led Michelle Slater (BM ’98) back to music.

Upon her graduation from the College of Music, Slater went on to study—and eventually teach—literature. After a few years as a professor and amateur musician, a feeling that had been stirring since she was a teenager guided Slater in a different, yet familiar, direction.

“Even when I was a boarding school student at Interlochen Arts Academy, I had a vision of starting a small grassroots institute where artists, scholars and environmentalists could think creatively,” she says.

Then the economic recession hit. “I kept reading articles about the decline in funding for the arts,” Slater explains. “And I knew they were precious domains that needed to be cultivated and protected in the face of that economic decline.”

She decided to take action. Slater founded the Mayapple Center for the Arts and Humanities in 2013. Based in Connecticut, the center takes an interdisciplinary approach to the arts. Its summer workshops for adults focus on creative writing, the visual arts, music, theater and humanities, complemented by lectures, seminars and improvisation throughout the week and culminating with a performance or art show.

“And in all of the workshops, we have an environmental component,” Slater says. “So everyone will participate in gardening, or being in charge of composting for a day.

The center’s purpose is to help equip musicians, writers and artists for what lies ahead in their fields. “We once invited the Philip Glass Ensemble as a surprise for our students. They got to play brand new, unpublished music. It was collaborative and groundbreaking,” Slater says. “That’s the direction we’re going.

That passion for the future of the arts was nurtured in Boulder.

The New Englander fondly remembers everything from concerts to the enduring mentorship she received from Associate Professor of Saxophone Tom Myer.

“Music students have a unique opportunity to be guided by a professor. You have weekly lessons and one-on-one interactions that really allow you to grow as a musician. I’m very grateful for that,” she says.

Slater says her formal music studies at CU-Boulder led her where she is today. “We all have to be pioneers and drop the word ‘convention’ from our vocabulary,” she says. “I tell music students that you have to create connections and incorporate your passion into other areas, like music technology or music therapy. If a position that you see yourself in doesn’t exist when you graduate, go out and create it.”

Slater’s goals for Mayapple include a weekend program for high school students, study-abroad opportunities and forums discussing the state of art in the 21st century. “It’s my mission to carry a torch for the arts and the humanities.”

Hermes Camacho (MM ’06) is Lecturer in Music Theory and Composition at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas; and director of orchestras, bands, strings and music theory with Austin Soundwaves, an El Sistema USA youth music program benefiting the underserved community of East Austin, Texas.

He continues to play horn as a substitute musician with the Colorado Symphony.

Karyn Dawn Grapes (PhD ’12) is Assistant Professor of Musicology at Colorado State University. She recently presented a paper titled “Elizabethan Musical Elegies as Commentaries on the Afterlife” at the North American British Music Studies Association Conference.

As Creative-in-Residence at the Denver Art Museum in March, Nathan Hall (DMA ’14) created site-specific musical works throughout the museum while holding office hours, open rehearsals and performances to gather feedback from museum visitors.

Michael Hayden (BME ’06) and his wife, Lauren Roznowski Hayden, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Harper Kathleen, on July 1, 2014. Lauren and Mike met in 2009 as music graduate students at Northwestern University and were married two years later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they currently reside.

Glen J. Hemberger (MM ’89) is Professor of Music, Director of Bands and Director of Graduate Studies in Music at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. Additionally, he’s Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquestra de Municipal Sopros de Caxias, a professional wind band based in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He received the Orpheus Award from the national office of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association.

Kasandra Keeling (DMA ’00) received the 2015 President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Performance from the University of Texas at San Antonio where she is Associate Professor and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies. Additionally, she was awarded first place in the 2014 American Prize Competition for her recorded performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini.”

Sabine Kortals (BM ’91) is Interim Director of Communications of CU Presents at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her connection to music has remained a constant in her career— previously as a classical music critic for The Denver Post and the Daily Camera, and currently as a freelance writer, editor, communicator and piano teacher. She’s also editor of Woman ChangeMAKER, a global eZine featuring the impact and accomplishments of women driving social change.

Kari Kraakevik (MM ’11) is an affiliate faculty member at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She also owns Denver-based My Reel Kids and the Wildflower School of Voice. Additionally, she founded the Little Lights Children’s Choir, which is in the process of becoming a nonprofit organization.

On May 8, 2015, the College of Music welcomed grads, along with their families and friends, to the Imig Music Building for commencement ceremonies. The endeavors of 118 students were celebrated in grand style with regalia, musical performances and diplomas.

Dean Robert Shay, who presided over his first commencement at CU-Boulder, says the day was all about the graduates.

“We're celebrating their accomplishments, recognizing their contributions to the College of Music community and wishing them the very best as they pursue their dreams.”

By conferring Distinguished Service Awards, the college also recognized the contributions of Dean Emeritus Robert Fink for his 15 years of service and CU-Boulder alumni Michael and Michele Ritter, generous benefactors of the Ritter Family Classical Guitar Program.

Senior cellist Robert Erhard addressed the class as the Outstanding Graduating Student. He’s currently pursuing graduate studies in cello performance at the Eastman School of Music.

As for his classmates, they're moving on, too—from continuing their educations elsewhere across the country to working with experimental jazz ensembles in Boulder, teaching and composing music of their own, and performing in venues throughout metro Denver.

No matter the next step, we know these students have received a world-class education and a worthy send-off from the CUBoulder music community. Congratulations to our graduates!

2014-15 GRADUATES Matthew Arau (DMA Instrumental Conducting and Literature) accepted the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Music, Chair of Music Education and Associate Director of Bands at Lawrence University where he had been Visiting Assistant Professor of Music.

Brianne Borden (MM Trumpet) started DMA studies at Arizona State University.

Jacob Bori (MM Percussion) accepted a public school teaching position in Fort Bend, Texas.

Diego Ribeiro Caetano (DMA Piano) is playing recitals across the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, France and Spain. He also plans to record his first solo album, and secure a university position teaching piano and piano literature.

Alaina DeBellevue (MM Collaborative Piano) is interning with the Castleman Quartet Program in Fredonia, New York.

Drew Donica (MM Piano Performance and Pedagogy) is a full-time piano faculty member at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee.

He teaches group classes and private lessons, helps organize programs and summer camps, and works through the Conservatory’s Connections program to bring music instruction to schools throughout the metro area.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS Graduate student performs with “orchestral academy” Sometimes an opportunity presents itself that’s so good—an opportunity that will demand weeks of your time—that turning it down isn’t an option. Even if you’re a master’s student in your final semester.

Mark Hsieh says he wouldn’t trade the month of March 2015 for anything. For three weeks, Hsieh took his talents to South Beach as a substitute bass trombonist for the New World Symphony, led by Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas.

A self-described “orchestral academy,” New World brings together young musicians for a crash course in the life of a professional: thrice weekly performances, seminars with visiting artists and a paycheck fill the term of up to a three-year contract.

When you’re a sub, it’s not that long of a commitment ... but it’s just as intense. At one point, Hsieh was on the road 15 hours in one day, fitting in his practice time at an airport. “It’s a great way to see how the professional world works, and learn at the same time,” he says. “It was an overall rejuvenating experience.”

Among other advantages of the symphony, Hsieh says New World understands its role in the lives of its musicians. “They know that people are always auditioning for full-time jobs, and they’re open to that. By offering temporary positions, they provide the flexibility that a lot of musicians need.”

As a result, New World represents a solid jumping off point for its more senior members, and a credible foot in the door for new grads. For those reasons, Hsieh says, he’d do it again in a heartbeat.

2014 Ekstrand Competition winners Every year, graduate students of the College of Music are invited to participate in the Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Graduate Student Performance Competition. Launched in 1987 as a memorial to the late CU-Boulder Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the competition welcomes all graduate performers. After preliminary rounds among studios, finalists are chosen to compete in a November concert at Grusin Music Hall.

Last year, finalists included the Altius Quartet (Andrew Giordano, Andrew Krimm, Zachary Reaves and Joshua Ulrich), violinist Sharon Park, bassoonist Daniel Nester, tenor Paul Kroeger and mezzo-soprano Rebecca Robinson. The quartet won the top prize ($2,000) and Park garnered the audience favorite award ($500).

Each finalist received an additional $500 toward professional development costs, such as performance, outreach and recordings.

“Every audition season, singers spend thousands of their own dollars on expenses, including travel, application fees and promotional materials. It's a wonder we're ever able to afford it,” Robinson says. “Awards like the Ekstrand grant enable us to pursue our goals.”

The Altius Quartet, the College of Music’s resident graduate string quartet, are mentored by the world-renowned Takács Quartet.

“We really enjoyed participating in the Ekstrand competition,” says Reaves, founding cellist of the Altius Quartet. “We look forward to the positive impact this award is going to have on our future.”

The 2015 Ekstrand Competition concert and reception are Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. in Grusin Music Hall.

Allan Armstrong (DMA Collaborative Piano) is full-time pianist for Opera Colorado. He is also pianist for the VOICE Festival in Savannah, Georgia, and Out Loud: The Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus.

An undergraduate trombone quartet including Brandon Bird, Mason Jackson, Jamey Morgan and Bryce Reiber traveled to the University of Iowa as part of a composers’ exchange series, playing undergraduate composition major Aidan Patrick Cook’s “Mind Crumbles Away.”

Francisco Borja-Prieto (BME) is Collegiate President of the Colorado Music Educators Association, a twoyear term. Alongside practicing music educators who comprise the CMEA leadership, he represents collegiate music education majors statewide.

Graduate composer Daniel Cox won the first Pro Musica Young Composer Award, which includes a commission for Maestro Cynthia Katsarelis and the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra. In February, Daniel was also selected to compose a piece for the Pendulum New Music: Alarm Will Sound composer readings.

Three Thompson Jazz Studies Program students—saxophonist Otto Lee, trumpeter Josh Reed and pianist Paul Shinn—spent a week this summer at the invitation-only Program for Jazz at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute in Illinois.

In March, saxophonists JD Little (DMA Alto), Paul Zaborac (DMA Tenor) and Stephanie Doctor (MM Baritone) performed “LHC” by Roger Zare with Associate Professor of Saxophone Tom Myer at North American Saxophone Alliance Region 2 Symposium at Northern Arizona University.

Student Ensembles

This summer the Altius Quartet were finalists in the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.

Newly formed Pathways To Jazz awarded five grants to Colorado musicians to help them record their music, including two CUBoulder pianists, Paul Shinn and Annie Booth.

This summer, Nathan Southwick (BM Violin) played at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine and the Hot Springs Music Festival in Arkansas.

The Backcountry Brass Quintet (Robert Bonner, trumpet; Brianne Borden, trumpet; John Geiger, horn; Will Shaw, trombone; and Charlie Goodman, tuba) participated in a three-day residency for the Aspen Valley School District. The residency culminated in a full recital as part of the Basalt Public Library concert series.

Codi Ng (BM Viola) participated in the Castleman Quartet Program at State University of New York this summer.

Michael Ochoa (BM Oboe) was named to the inaugural class of the CUBoulder Esteemed Scholars program, a merit-based scholarship program awarded to a select group of Colorado freshmen.

William Chase Peeler (PhD Musicology) won the Center for the American West's Thompson Writing Award in the category of creative nonfiction for his submission, which forms part of his dissertation and describes a day in the life of the tiny—but musical— town of Terlingua, Texas.

Kelsey Thibdeau (PhD Musicology) won a prize for best student paper at the Society for Ethnomusicology Southwest Chapter meeting in April. Kelsey also received a Fulbright to study in Jordan in 2015-16.

In April, Sarah Van Dusen (PhD Music Education) presented a research poster titled "The Effect of Manipulatives on 3rd-Grade Students' Rhythmic Dictation Scores" at the Annual Meeting of the American Education Research Association in Chicago.

In March, the Concert Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo traveled to Monterey, California, to perform at the Next Generation Jazz Festival.

The Concert Jazz Ensemble received the 2014 Outstanding Performance Award from DownBeat Magazine’s Student Music Awards.

Vocal jazz ensemble Table of Five in January opened the 2015 session of the Colorado Legislature with a performance at the House of Representatives chamber.

Selena Wellington (BM Composition) is the subject of a documentary film, “Rites of Passage.” The film, by Oscar-nominated director Frederick Marx, features several young people who confront adolescence and young adulthood with the help of mentors.

Maggie Rickard (BME/BM Horn) won the Fourth Horn position with the Sarajevo Philharmonic in Bosnia.

Freshman David Leech, sophomore Jordan Pyle, junior Chas Douthit and senior Robert Erhard were named the 2015 College of Music Outstanding Students.

As part of the recognition, Erhard delivered a speech at spring commencement and Douthit received the Presser Foundation scholarship for this academic year.

COLLEGE OF MUSIC SUPPORTERS Becky Roser Since I was a small child, I’ve been interested in the arts—especially music. No longer a piano player, I’m a steadfast concert-goer, and there are many opportunities to hear superb music in the Boulder area. I’m continually delighted to know that many of the performers here and across the country are graduates of the College of Music.

Current and former students are important not only to the local music scene, but also to the music pipeline, in general—whether it’s classical music, jazz, composition, experimental music or opera. The college is multifaceted. It provides exceptional education to students, and it’s an important gateway for the community at large to connect with the university.

The outstanding College of Music faculty inspires, mentors and educates wonderfully talented young musicians. I’m in awe of their dedication and hard work! I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know many students through the Adopt-a-Student program and other initiatives. We’ve kept in touch, and they’ve shared their experiences at CU-Boulder with me. Without exception, they emphasize the unique, friendly environment during their years of study.

Neither of us can claim the musical instincts or talent that characterize the faculty and students, but we appreciate what they do and the way they do it. We love jazz, and we see that love reflected in the program— in the kinds of students CU-Boulder attracts and the caliber of musicians that graduate.

Years ago, when we were first considering a gift to the College of Music, we weren’t sure which program we wanted to support.

We weighed several areas of priority that then-Dean Dan Sher described to us. We knew that we wanted to make an impact on the student experience—to make the college the best it could be. Jazz was most attractive to us. Later, we were fortunate to meet Maria Schneider, one of today’s premier jazz composers.

She was visiting the College of Music, doing master classes and performing with our jazz students. She had a huge impact on them and the university. We knew then that we wanted our gift to enrich the jazz program.

We’re pleased that it’s now more possible for John Gunther, director of the program, and other jazz faculty members to bring in guest artists to enhance the learning experience of their students. We want students like Danny Meyer, Annie Booth and Greg Wahl to leave CU-Boulder not only with a degree, but with the expertise and musical knowledge to succeed anywhere.

We’ve been impressed by so many young musicians that we want to do everything we can to give them a boost.
