Junior Ayub - Photographer - Teesside UK By Becky Magson

Photography Junior Ayub Model Jasmine Isis Raine Middlesbrough, UK based Junior Ayub is a student photographer and videographer currently studying TV and Film Production at Teesside University.

At 30 years old Junior admits his interest in photography didn't come at an early age, but has seen his passion grow since initially experimenting with a camera phone in his twenties. A short stint living abroad in Cyprus and travelling overseas provided the landscapes that pushed Junior's technical skills while he discovered the extent to which he really enjoyed what was just a hobby. It wasn't until 2012 that Junior took the leap into professional kit and invested in his first DSLR camera. It didn't take him long to master the transition as a year later he had his first fashion shoot under his belt. Having supportive family within the same creative field helps – Junior's make up artist sister, Samina Sarmad, encouraged him on professional shoots together, and it is she who Junior credits for the exposure he's gained. A documentary created by Junior involved filming local designer Kate Fearnley and fashion retailer Psyche that led on to a fashion shoot staged within the store. While fashion photography is the presiding passion of Junior's art, his interests extend to food, landscapes and even wedding photography.

Photography Junior Ayub Model Hannah Stevenson

Although Junior's photographic eye has taken him to foreign lands, he's quick to establish that his North East roots lay at the heart of his passion: “I love being from Teesside, there are so many superb locations right on the doorstep. It's brilliant having local models, clothing designers and make up artists to work with it shines a light on the vast array of local talent that may not get the recognition that they truly deserve.”

Rachel Obbard Make Up Artist Facebook.com/rachelobbardmua My name is Rachel Obbard, I’m 20 years old and I’ve been studying makeup since I was 17. I am currently in my second year of a foundation degree in Makeup Artistry for Fashion and Media. What is the story behind you becoming a MUA? I started to consider makeup artistry as a career when I was 16, before then I had been pursuing a career based in science but I have always found art subjects more fulfilling. What occasions do you do makeup for? I predominantly do makeup for fashion, with the hope of becoming an editorial makeup artist in the future. I like to work with models and photographers that shoot in a fashion style. Have you worked with any well known names? I haven’t worked with any well known companies as yet however I have worked on shoots for two local brands: Frog London Watches and Amy Stubbs Silk.

Do you prefer working on location or in a studio? I enjoy both environments and I think you can get some fabulous shots in the studio, however I think a location gives the images more depth and interest. What do your friends and family think of your career? My friends and family are very supportive of what I do. Has your work taken you to any exciting locations? I haven’t been to any exotic locations as yet but when working with Amy Stubbs we shot in a charming old mill that had loads Photography Simon Batty of lovely features, cool machinery and very old record books MUA Sarah Jowett of all the designs the company had made. Models Samantha Follows / Scott Lee

What preparations do you undertake before a shoot? I will think about the brief and look for inspiration in magazines etc. then design a makeup look, working on my own face to get a feel for how the colours and shapes work together until I am happy with the overall look. I then prepare a face chart to remind myself of the look when shooting. I also prepare my kit with the products and tools I need for that job and make sure all my brushes, tools and equipment are clean and ready to use. What do you think makes a good MUA? I think it is important to be enthusiastic and creative. I am well prepared but if I am inspired on set I like to use those ideas as well as the looks I have already designed, these can be the best images in the end. Being punctual and able to work efficiently is also important, if you spend too long doing the makeup you don’t have time to get many photographs! Do you have a favourite shoot you’ve been involved in? I really enjoy pretty much any shoot I work on but my favourites would be working with Frog London and Amy Stubbs because of the fantastic locations and lovely teams. What are the key items you feel every MUA must have in their kit? Illamasqua skin base foundation - it’s quite full coverage but when photographed the skin looks absolutely flawless and smooth. A lip balm to smooth and soften the lips before applying other lip products. A duo fibre face brush - this buffs the foundation into the skin quickly and gives a beautiful streak free finish with seamless edges. What are your favourite makeup items? MAC nightmoth lip liner and diva lipstick, on their own or together they always give a beautiful dark lip that lasts. Photography Sergiusz Pawlowski Model Chloe Grant

Brat and Suzie Feature by Becky Magson

East London design duo Charlotte and Polly Vickery are the twin sister founders of Brat and Suzie, the quirky and cute animal themed clothing brand. With a flair for illustration and an eye for the unusual, Brat and Suzie's popular designs feature animals in comical human perspectives; spectacle wearing dogs, flamingos teetering aloft stiletto heels and squirrels riding motorbikes.

Polly enthuses: “We combine our obsession with fashion and our innate love of animals. With qualifying backgrounds in the fashion industry, Charlotte working as a Miss Selfridge denim designer and Polly in fashion production at River Island, the pair already had solid grounding for starting the venture. In 2009 the Vickery sisters took their fashion vision to the small screen, appearing on TV's entrepreneurial show Dragon's Den, which earned the designers their first flock of fashionista fans. Fast forward to 2015 and the brand is stocked by trendy boutiques as well as some of the most respected retailers, including online powerhouse ASOS.com. Ask the sisters what their social circle think of their clothing design business and Polly is quick to establish that family have been imperative to their success.

“Our parents are really supportive. Dad sometimes even plays courier to one of our stockists in Bristol: Fox and Feather. Clare, who owns the shop, loves it when he drops the stock in – it’s a really personal touch. Our Mum's got a great collection of vintage clothing that we can draw inspiration from and Polly's husband Larry provides his web design skills. We like to maximise our friends' talents and they usually don’t mind too much.” Drawing inspiration from their homeland of London is Brat and Suzie's design roots. “Living London is great inspiration as there’s so many markets, vintage events and people around to inspire. We look at everything from the catwalks to the street.” When asked about what it takes to make a good designer, Charlotte and Polly agree: “The perfect mix of commercial and crazy!” Leading fashion designers are incredibly influential and the Brat and Suzie duo know those who inspire them must be in tune with what's on trend within the industry. “We love Marc Jacobs and Paul Smith as they both have an amazing understanding of print and colour. Eudon Choi is a fantastic new designer to watch too. We used to have a studio in the same building as him and love, love, loved everything he was doing. But if we had to have an all time favourite it would have to be Jean Paul Gautier!”

The latest season sees Brat and Suzie's most creative designs yet. With t-shirts and sweaters realistically brought to life through their delicate and colourful depictions, it's no surprise that this is the girls' favourite collection to date. “Definitely the new SS15 collection! We’ve injected lots of colour and all over prints this season, moving the brand in a new, trend led direction."

"Polly's favourite piece is the Folk Bunny rain mac. It’s perfect for festivals or keeping on hand for those raining days. Charlotte’s go to piece is the Savannah Print safari tshirt dress. It’s just recently hit ASOS.com and is so bright and colourful. It’s a really great piece to stand out from the crowd in.”

A collaboration with highstreet women's brand Warehouse under their belt allowed the designers to reach new heights, attracting customers they would otherwise have not engaged. Looking forward, the design twins see the brand pushing further boundaries, with sights set on range expansion and branching into home wares. And why the name? Their childhood pet cats, of course! Cyber Bullying Article by Emma Pearce

Photography Petek Photography Model Emma Pearce

My name is Emma Pearce, I'm a plus sized model based in Cornwall, UK. I work up to topless but mostly do fashion shoots, though I prefer wedding themes as what girl wouldn't want to wear the 'big white dress' before they actually marry. Although I enjoy modelling I do find society's perception of you becomes clouded by the media's portrayal of how a model should look.

Since modelling and competing in beauty pageants I have been targeted by online trolls and cyberbullying to the point of contemplating suicide. These people believe that there's no way I could be a model due to my size. I had nasty messages every day for two months. I was told to apply to become the face of a dog food brand and told I was ugly and thought highly of myself. It wasn't until I spoke out about my ordeal that the abuse stopped. I suffered in silence for ages as I was depressed but decided to speak out to help others going through the same and to bring this horrible matter to the front to get some sort of law against this awful way of bullying. I'm not trying to say that modelling has a bad side as I have a lot of fun doing this job but I'm merely saying societies views are clouded about their perception of beauty and I believe nasty comments are made because of jealousy. My views are that beauty is about who you are as a person not your looks or size. There is a market out there for bigger women as the average UK size is around 12-14 but it is hidden and should be showed more.
