On November 11th, when I bowed my head in silence not only did I think of the War loss but all service people that have lost thier lives in service for us, Military, Police, Fire & Rescue.

Drugs inside fruit-crushing machine.

2,400 kg of Cocaine, street value $4 million, was found inside of a fruit grinder that was b e i n g shipped from Argentina to a storage facility in West Kelowna.

Vancouver CBSA Officers discovered the contraband and alerted the RCMP, three men, Montgomery of West Kelowna, Salvador Ascencio Chavez a Mexican National in Canada illegally and Tariq Aslam of Vancouver, were convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Montgomery was a key man in this ring of illegal drugs smuggling and is labelled as a Kingpin.

Antarpal Singh, 31, truck driver from Brampton, ON was arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison for importing cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking up to $6 million of cocaine from Michigan.

The 53 kilograms of cocaine was found hidden in a truckload containing Rock Band video games accessories.

Secondary screening x-ray examination discovered the cocaine in Singh’s trailer. Singh denied knowledge of the cocaine; he was carrying a truckload of salt from Ontario to Michigan and picked up the load of video game accessories on his trip back the following day.

He told the officer that he was sitting in his tractor and did not visually observe the loading of the shipment, nor inspect the load and that someone else placed the seal on the trailer.

He admitted falsifying his driver log entries regarding the amount of stop times while en route to the Blue Water Bridge.

Dare I remind all of you drivers, you absolutely MUST do your 17 point pre trip inspections, you MUST be present and observing the loading and unloading of your cargo, you MUST report any and all deficiencies you discover to your company’s dispatch team and/or management as well as to CBSA and CBP.

Women in Trucking Association Names Heath Jones as November Member of the Month.

Plover, WI— November 12, 2014: Women in Trucking (WIT) Association has named Heather Jones as November

2014 Member of the Month.

Jones is an owner/operator, business woman, advocate, mentor and trainer in Western Australia.

Jones has been in the trucking industry for the past 25 years and clearly has a passion for it. Last year she started the Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girls, which is a group that encourages and supports female drivers.

Many women (and men) have Jones to thank for their careers in the industry. She single-handedly trained many of them giving them the experience they needed to obtain well-paid jobs.

Jones regularly attends high schools with her big rig to educate girls about truck driving. She leaves them with an interest about careers in the trucking industry. It is also a great opportunity to teach them about safety and sharing the road with truck drivers.

Teaching girls about trucks and the industry is very important to Jones. In fact, she brought her own daughters on the road with her at the young ages of three and four.

This experience eventually led one of them to driving a truck as an adult.

Both of her daughters help run her company, Success Transport.

Jones also recruited her mother, making truck driving very much a family affair.

You may wonder what it is like to drive a truck in Western Australia. “It is still like the Wild West where we are,” says Jones. “We have to load our own trailers, change our own tires and we are all solo truck drivers.”

Jones has gained national attention in Australia for the work she is doing in the trucking industry. She appears regularly on news stations across the country.

Jones is a Women In Trucking Association member that truly carries out its mission: to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry.

Membership is not limited to women, as sixteen percent of its members are men who support the mission.

A NEW CANADIAN'S DRE

As a very young boy Tony Trigiani's family left a war-torn Italy post-WW2 and immigrated to Canada settling on the West side of Toronto in Etobicoke.

Tony grew up in a multi-ethnic community, now the norm in Canada but not so common at the time.

Tony started his business career in the meat business but ultimately saw more potential for success (and less physical demands!) in packaging.

His company, Norstar Corporation, has probably provided the packaging for may of the food stuffs you will encounter in your grocery store during your next visit.

A few years ago Tony made a nostalgic visit back to Italy and in the area of Ortona drove past a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery and decided to stop and visit.

His research revealed that over 114,000 Canadians are buried overseas or at sea in some 2,500 Commonwealth cemeteries around the world.

Canada only started repatriating its dead for internment here in Canada in 1970.

Mother Canada, an 84 meter high statue will be constructed at Green Cove just north of Ingonish on the Cabot Trail ,Cape Breton.

The location was chosen for a number of reasons: a peaceful, tranquil location ideal for quiet reflection on a point of rock jutting out into the Atlantic surrounded on three sides, as is Canada, by water; one of the last glimpses of Canada as thousands of soldiers shipped out to the battlefields of WW1 and 2 and the first glimpse of their country for the lucky ones who made it home and a location in a National Park where the threat of being surrounded by commercial developments would be eliminated.

The statue's figure would be based on Canada Bereft which is part of the Vimy Memorial in France.

With the permission and support of the family of Mr Walter Allword, the sculptor of the figures on the Vimy Memorial, Canada Bereft's arms and head would be raised facing line-of-sight towards the Vimy Memorial over the horizon.

The arms will be open, reaching forward, welcoming home the memories of our Fallen.

At the base of the statue will be a True Patriotic Love Commemorative Ring.

Every year, 30 days before a specific date, yet to be decided, perhaps Mother's day or Canada Day, two canisters, one containing soil from at least ten of the Commonwealth cemeteries where Canadians are buried and the other sea water from the North Atlantic will arrive on the west coast of Canada.

The canisters will make a 30 day ceremonial voyage across Canada to be interned at an annual ceremony at the base of Mother Canada within the True Patriot Love Commemorative Ring.

Mr Tony Trigiani's dream is to pay back Canada for its embrace of him and his family. He wants to do that by honouring our fallen wherever they may lie.

As one of two ambassadors for the project I am assisting him to achieve that dream.

Hitting the road with The Road Hammers

The Road Hammers – Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy and Chris Byrne – are no strangers to the freedom that life on the road brings.

Since 2004 the award-winning grouphas been crafting boot-thumping, infectious tunes that meld country rock and southern blues with a “Hammerized” spin.

Striking a chord with anyone who feels at home behind the wheel with the road stretched out ahead of them,Wheels(Open Road Recordings),the bands fourth studio album, captures the craved experience of the unexpected adventure found when going off the beaten track.

Says Byrne, “Being on the road is how we’ve made a living for years. There’s definitely a certain freedom to it, and Wheels is the soundtrack to that feeling.”

Spending countless hours on the road since the band was first launched,The Road Hammers took a well-deserved hiatus in 2010.

Announcing their reunion, in the fall of 2013, and their brand new song “Get On Down The Road”, the band exploded back onto the country music scene. Continuing to ride the success from their first single, thesecond single off of the new album, “Mud”, became GOLD-certified.Huge fans of the Geoff Mack classic,“I’ve Been Everywhere”, the group released their version of the track, which perfectly captures the frenzied energy of the original while highlighting their trademark harmonies.

“The album’s called Wheels for a reason,” says Jason McCoy (vocals/guitar).

We didn’t want to write a song just about trucking, but about 4x4’s, four-wheeling, dirt biking, you name it, and “Mud” is an extension of that.”

The Road Hammers, a truly legendary Canadian country music band, burst onto the scene when their self-titled debut album hit No. 1 on the Canadian Country Album Charts in 2005 and was eventually certified Platinum.

It was from the success of their debut album, which garnered the band multiple awards and nominations, including the 2005 and 2006 CCMA Award for Group or Duo of the Year and the 2005 JUNO for Country Recording of the Year.

Since their early success, the band has worked with legends like LynyrdSkynyrd, Roy Clark, and most recently with Frank Turner of Bachman-Turner Overdrive on Wheels.

“Getting into this project after taking time away was about getting back to the heart of what The Road Hammers were made to do,” Bellamy says.

If the immense success of Wheels is any indication of where the band is headed, then it’s safe to say that The Road Hammers will continue to appeal to listeners who aren’t just in it for the short ride – but the long haul.

The Road Hammers are currently on tourwith label mates Doc Walker and Blackjack Billy during the Bands on the Run Tour from November 20 to December 15, 2014.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray.

At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again.

Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop.

From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio.
