R.O.O.T consists of public program and circulation while perpendicular private programs are inserted within. To establish the building within the landscape and to informally ‘blur’ the richness of modern material, R.O.O.T begins to express sustainable initiatives systematically as well as visually. Some of these concepts are expressed externally on the facade such as; corten steel paneling that mimics earth tones and stationary elements on the southern most facade. Interior initiatives are proven through minimizing assembly time through prefabricated components, harnessing enriched air from tree growth, locally sourced materials, grey water systems and kinetic conditions for ventilation.
To express each of these highlighted components R.O.O.T is constructed through a series of hide and reveal to express the vulnerability of each constructed item as well as intrigue to explore such aspects, this is done through well crafted details, material choice, and high value decision making Aspects that reflect this concept are; Structure, joinery, and services
R.O.O.T is an institution to educate, grow and provide meaningful elegance of Ontario’s native species of vegetation through being; surrounded through structural expression and through formal study of dendrology.

As the world becomes increasingly led by fast-paced stimulation, observation, and experience through technology, critical engagement with the physical presence of the environment is decreasing. This recent superficial engagement made possible through the digital space is eroding a critical awareness of the physical human condition, even though the human condition has had a much longer history with space whereby people were personally, physically, and mindfully immersed. As a result of this new digital mindset and ‘rushed’ mode of engagement, there has been a shift in human consciousness: Space and architecture are perceived differently, and barriers have been created in fostering deeper connections. In response, this thesis seeks to explore the meaning of ‘Slowness’ in architecture and engage with issues of authenticity and timelessness of a place.
Using a site in Combermere, Ontario, a process of deep observation and critical site engagement was used to help try and re-discover the meaning of ‘Slowness’ in architecture that is situated in an otherwise un-slow world. The result is a type of counter-resistance; one that positions deep and meaningful engagement as an antidote to the otherwise fast, blurry, simulated, and constructed experience offered through digital technology.

Our intentions of the site are to create a constitutional campus that allows for a multitude of programs that enforces the revitalization of the “wait” in an “industrial” condition. We have created a verbal language that reflects concepts that helped to build the foundation for this structure; these include: Transport, circulation, environments, revitalize, typology, and the un-connected.
The ‘NEW YOU’ centre is a rehabilitation institution that allows self aware people to be admitted, rehabilitated and thus making a reflective change within themselves. This facility allows for new education, new social skills, and new means of a living/thriving life while all under one roof. The facility incorporates a full functioning civilized internal society within a single place to reestablish the person into the real social society.

The City of Ottawa intends to focus the future growth of the city in-and-around new and existing transit stations. ‘Mercato 2 4’ is a response to a future light rail transit station. Transit-Oriented Design (TOD).
In response to this, ‘Mercato 2 4’ puts forth a cohesive urban environment that is also enriched with creative spaces to support the existing artistic community that resides currently on the western most side of the site.
The 35 storey high rise situated at the most northern point within the Gladstone/Preston site, functions as a cornerstone in regards of residential, community hub and educational practice. Embracing the urban movements throughout the site ‘Your Space’ results in a porous like atmosphere that allows the future public density a place to live, learn and create.
