DIRECTORS FOREWORD

For almost 40 years, first as a student, then as an artist and gallery director, I have had the distinct pleasure of viewing faculty exhibitions. As a student, my first exposure to a faculty exhibition was at Cal Poly Pomona in the University Art Gallery. This exhibition featured full-time faculty members Diane Divelbess, Eileen Fears, Charles Fredrick, Walt Glazer, Joe Hannibal, and Stan Wilson. The students really looked forward to this exhibition, as it gave us a chance to see the work of the faculty that where instructing us at time. I remember the faculty working a lot of extra hours as they prepared for the show. As the student Gallery Director of the University Art Gallery, assisting the faculty in installing the show was an eye-opening experience, as I was able to see my professors, not only as instructors, but also as artists.

As time has passed, I have really thought about all the people, artists, galleries, museums and exhibitions that have shaped me as a professor and an artist. Stan Wilson of Cal Poly Pomona was my professor for gallery exhibition and design. From him I learned the foundations of gallery management, but it was not until I saw his own work as an artist, that I was influenced and inspired. His work greatly influenced my work and I know when I make work or teach a class in sculpture or gallery exhibition design, that I have the privilege of passing along his life’s work.

Just as I was inspired by my Professors, I hope that our Stanislaus State students will be inspired by our faculty exhibition. Faculty exhibitions allow students the opportunity to view amazing work. But in addition, it allows them the opportunity to speak to our faculty about what has influenced, inspired and shaped their current artwork. Hopefully students will begin to view our faculty not only as instructors, but also as artists, who carry on the creative endeavors of their teachers and mentors.

I would like to thank the many colleagues that have been instrumental in presenting this exhibition, the faculty of California State University, Stanislaus for the opportunity of exhibiting their amazing work, Brad Peatross of the School of the Arts, California State University, Stanislaus for the catalog design and Repro-Graphics, California State University, Stanislaus for the printing of the catalog. Much gratitude is extended to the Instructionally Related Activates Program of California State University, Stanislaus, as well as anonymous donors for the funding of the exhibition and catalogue. Their support is greatly appreciated.

MARTIN AZEVEDO

Marty Azevedo employs symbolism and archetypes in his imagery as a means of comprehending the intricacies of our world and his place in it. His visual compositions frequently delve into notions related to masculinity, authority, power and influence. Through the medium of printmaking and use of the multiple, he delves into these concepts.

PATRICK BRIEN

Through abstract painting, I work to create a fluid, dynamic sense of locality. The works are created in many layers and a present a visual complexity that reveals my interests in architecture, the built environment, landscape, archaeology, and mapping . Elements and layers are stacked upon one another, echoing the tactile accretion often found in the urban environment. Areas of the paintings are scraped away, reconstructed, patched or lead into completely other windows of imagery. The stacking of imagery reflects my interest in the way that digital interfaces, augmented reality and GPS have become enmeshed into the way that we perceive and interact with the world. There is an uncanniness to how mapping apps present information about a location that I try to include in the paintings. The formal elements that I compose on the canvas become signifiers for these ideas when placed beside one another.

DEAN DECOCKER

My work is part of a continuing series, “Blue Jackets Return.” From the first winged-shaped structures to the current work, I have been exploring my interest in formal elements by transforming flat, two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional objects. I derive much of my inspiration from everyday objects such as mailboxes, aircraft structures, wings, propellers, heavy machinery and architectural works. These objects become conceptual elements, which I transform into drawings. Then, via different techniques of construction, I fabricate many objects of inner structures and outer coverings that create volumetric enclosures. In recent years, my interest in racecar fabrication and collecting vintage BMX bicycles from the 1970’s has led to subtle changes to my work’s structure and color. My work of drawings, prints and photographs come from objects that inspire me and places that I have visited that make me think about time and space. Some of my newest print/painting work involves my interest in World War I and II military ship camouflage.

The titles of my works are a result of my interest in the construction techniques of World War II aircraft and the battles fought in the South Pacific.

Artifact Appropriation

These works, generally appearing as 3D prints, are the latest in a series that was started in 2016. The compositions pair classical sculpture with cartoon characters and engage in the dialogue of the ethics of artifact appropriation in museums from around the world. The whimsical nature of the work is done cavalierly, in a way that I think acknowledges certain indignities that museum settings place upon appropriated artifacts, like substituting an object’s original context for tourist consumption, for example.

Museums, often displaying artifacts that have been taken from other countries without their consent, have played a role in the colonization of countries and cultures. Recently, there have been efforts made toward the repatriation of antiquities from museums to their countries of origin, but there is still much more work to be done.

JESSICA GOMULA-KRUZIC

My work explores societal constraints with a visual style that places viewers in the midst of her questioning as active participants. Visually, my work is colorful, corporeal, and constantly changing. Core elements include a dynamic, shifting nature that is responsive to the environment, accompanied by a whimsical critique of modern American culture and social norms. I explore the nature of the physical body and societal constraints with an enveloping visual style that places the viewer in the action—frequently as a complicit participant. By breaking the fourth wall the audience becomes my partner.

In these works, the physical body serves as a way to examine the shifting dialog of people, of culture, within the built and natural environment. In some of the works, the entire environment is natural. Many places are settings of contained nature, but others are completely man-made environments, with no natural presence remaining.

KAVENA HAMBIRA

With his work grounded in documentary filmmaking, Hambira seeks to connect nodes of history that tell a story of shared resilience and invention despite ongoing colonial and racial oppression. While his earlier work documented families impacted by police violence, his current work focuses on the twentieth century’s first genocide— the Herero and Nama Genocide, carried out by Germany in 1905 in his family’s native Namibia. Engaging textiles and traditional attire alongside video, here Hambira bridged geography and time to describe the indelible and far- reaching impacts of the genocide and the ongoing struggle for reparations and reconciliation.

For this exhibition, Hambira created an installation that is grounded in a large multicolored flag, on which Namibia is spelled out phonetically, a nod to former President Trump’s mispronunciation of the country’s name in a speech to the United Nations in 2017. Quilted with colors that are found in both the German and Namibian flags, the piece enforces a correction while tethering the error to the colonial violence that defines Namibia’s history and present. Alongside the flag is an otjikaiva, a Victorian-style hat like those worn by nineteenth-century German missionaries but made of Namibian fabrics—an important sign of cultural identity for the Herero in resistance to the history of the genocide. Playing as part of the installation, Hambira’s film draws together personal and historical contexts for the work. The stitching and pinning of the fabric in the otjikaiva and flag, as well as the composition of the film, emphasize the constructed nature of racism and the persisting impacts of Germany and Namibia’s inextricable histories.

DAN HESKAMP

These works were created to show appreciation for the lives of plants and animals that exist beyond our domesticated environments; those considered insignificant, forgotten, or discarded. Often overlooked are the ways we memorialize the plants and creatures with whom we share our homes, neighborhoods, and planet. These multimedia works provide a space to acknowledge and revere their existence. I use an historiographical methodology and track the evolution of humankind’s connection with flora and fauna in the development of our culture. These multidisciplinary works focus on several species of plants and animals, categorized according to the nature of our interactions with them. The work is contextualized by the

history and imagery of early Christian relics and ossuaries. Raised in a Roman Catholic household, my earliest experiences with art, design, and allegory were the ornate decorations found in Catholic churches. This iconography is seen in paintings and illustrations depicting characters and narratives from the Bible, in embellished objects often cast in gold or precious metals, stained glass windows, furniture, and architectural fittings.

The most recent works were created by combining my interest in traditional scientific illustration, catholic imagery from my childhood, as well as digital patterning. Using Adobe Aero I have incorporated an Augmented Reality experience into each piece which dissects the layers used to create the image. There is also hidden text which can only be viewed using this AR technology. These phrases reflect some of my thought processes while researching the subjects.

The way we treat other organisms on this planet can be an indication of how we treat each other. The ideology of speciesism is continuously expanding in our culture. As our population grows so does our impact on other species. This art aims to create an open dialogue and explore further understanding of speciesism and memento mori.

CHAD HUNTER

As a kid, I rode bikes and played in parks connected to the SF Bay. I was outdoors a lot growing up and I always enjoyed being outdoors regardless of weather. As art became a larger part of my life, I learned to begin to look for forms, values, and colors in nature. My goal is to show what I see, to state what I found on my paper.

As observing nature brings endless detail, my constant challenge is editing out and focusing on the most important. Watercolor comes natural to me and it packs well. The supplies are easily portable and cleans up with less issues to the environment than other media. Currently I am looking more and more at light and its interactions. This is my focus.

Painting outdoors is unpredictable and changing. I am never up to the challenge, but I’ll keep trying.

ELLEN ROEHNE

Much of my work explores the nature of being human, with all our complexities and contradictions- our birth, growth, aspirations, and mortality. Many of the works reference the dualities of humankind- innocence and evil, strength and frailty, dominance and subservience, order, and chaos. How we balance these parts of ourselves is what makes us who we are, influencing how we see our place in relation to others and our surroundings. The clay figures I create embody these attributes, often including found items and imagery from nature, that reference these dichotomies. I work through chance and accident, continuously making conscious and subconscious choices until the work feels finished.

Overall, my artwork examines what it means to be human, both the mundane and profound experiences we go through. Through my creative process, I strive to tell a story that relates to the viewer in our shared experience within the natural world.

SUSAN STEPHENSON

In panoramic oil paintings developed on site, I transform everyday scenery through an exploration of color and light. Torn between the lovely places that appeal to everyone and locations some might find un-paintable, I navigate a line between attraction and unease. Traffic lights and stop signs inspire me, along with the way sunlight hits the “do not pass” lines in the road. Instead of ignoring electric lines and telephone poles, they break my paintings’ skies into visual patterns, catching the light and becoming orange against the atmosphere. Every day, people are bombarded with chances to see beauty yet often sleepwalk past it; rather than wait for our culture to look back wistfully at some of the things we currently overlook, I prefer to show their beauty right now. Why wait?

My easy relationship with curvilinear perspective is partly due to growing up in a geodesic dome, and after twenty years of using the wraparound view, it now permeates my work. Similarly, the spatial relationships of landscape define my work regardless of genre. Finding equilibrium between a work’s formal relationships and a location’s visual cues has become a form of meditation, and as a result, balancing abstraction and reality motivates my creativity. Ultimately, I look for a combination of modern life and scenery that sparks that peculiar blend of kooky and beautiful I find so compelling.

CHRISTINA TERUEL

My current work seeks to simulate the illusions of tourism in order to provoke questions about pleasure and the passage of time through performance, video, and foodbased installations. I was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina- a tourist town. My everyday environment consisted of the same neon advertisements, mini-golf courses constructed from artificial nature, and endless amounts of sugary, decadent food. I spent every summer working alongside my family at their breakfast restaurant. At the age of 13, I began my decade-long career as a waitress.

As the community operated daily through artificial spaces and repetitive labor, I became keenly aware of the hospitality industry’s often grueling and manufactured realities that produce and sustain the illusion of happiness. In the video Yiayia, color is muted and overlapping sounds of the ocean, amusement parks and service bells play in the background. This piece serves to commemorate my yiayia who is seen in her final year, after over five decades working in Myrtle Beach.

KORY TWADDLE

Travel routes are fascinating occurrences, and there are vast systems underway that we are not aware of. My work has given me a deeper understanding of how people navigate, especially using proprioception, or the memorization of of routes through body movements; and synesthesia, or the combination of imagery and sensory information. Both of these are used by everyone in navigation to some extent, whether they realize it or not. I translate these travel routes and frequently-used location diagrams into my paintings and drawings which incorporate multi-sensory information as navigational landmarks in order to learn my way to new locations, remember the various routes I have taken, and to record what I saw, heard, smelled, and otherwise sensed while I was going to or spending time inside a place. My maps are a way for me to make sense of the world around me, and to navigate my way through it literally, also as a way for me to remember each time and place as unique and temporary. Besides the abstract recording of the lived sensory information, I also begin to consider how these routes change me, and the effect of each individual route and the time spent there.

My works are functional maps, and are records of the moment of specific periods of time and particular places, of my own life. These lived diagrams consider how I move through and between familiar spaces such as my studio and home, while others are based on the routes repeatedly walked, whose traces become the foundation of my paintings or drawings, the basis of each piece. With these lines as the beginning, I start to include other information recorded through mark making, color, texture, shape, and respond to each with another layer of visual information.

As I remember each segment of a place or part of a walk or drive, I interpret it into the piece, translate it as I see it, and can share that through the elements of art, in basic forms and start to fill each with details.

My work regularly includes traditional media such as charcoal, graphite, watercolor, or acrylic, alongside nontraditional, such as collaged pieces of ephemera from my life, and other recycled materials. My studio strives to document what was around me when and where I was when making the piece, besides reducing waste, as well as giving importance to otherwise overlooked personal items. The familiarity and physicality of the subject matter of domesticity inform my work with a biological, cellular visual language, and a lighthearted, playful outlook in comparing the body with buildings, in that they both take in substances, use systems to control and maintain the whole structure, and expel waste. The way rooms of a house or a building service specific functions, organs in the body also have their unique purposes within an overall system within the body, or building. Arteries and blood veins appear in my work as moving pathways in the body between locations, just as roads carry goods and supplies.

By making these detailed maps of my most-used spaces and most-frequented routes, I have become very familiar with and more understanding of daily rhythms, and the subtle variations in otherwise familiar places. By listening closely and paying attention to our surroundings, we all can find and appreciate beauty in the aesthetics of our surroundings, architecture, or other places we use regularly.

MIRABEL WIGON

Mirabel Wigon is an artist residing in the San Joaquin Valley of California. She creates landscape paintings that grapple with environmental phenomena resulting from, and related to, the built landscape. Her work utilizes a variety of painting languages of abstraction, naturalism, digital codes, and diagrammatic schemes to layer representations of a place, resulting in a compounded view. The scenes depicted are contradictions, where form and gesture take on multiple aspects to explore notions of progress, instability, and system collapse. The paintings acknowledge infrastructure instability and ecological degradation as dire existential threats, emphasizing the flawed modernist narrative of progress and innovation.

Her works have been featured in numerous group exhibitions both regionally and nationally. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach. She is currently Assistant Professor of Art at California State University, Stanislaus.
