2022-2023 Seedstock Team

About the Team
Danielle is a Senior at CSU majoring an Animal Science, with a pre-vet option. Danielle was a member of the 2021-22 Seedstock Team, and after graduation, she hopes to attend vet school and eventually practice large animal medicine. Danielle likes working together as a team and the hands-on experience for students. When she’s home for the summer, she enjoys breakaway roping.
— Danielle HorickGrace graduated in December ‘22 with a double major in Animal Science and Ag Education, with a concentration in Ag Literacy. She’s very interested in genetics and meat science, and she would one day like to help producers in making selection decisions that will impact the overall quality of their herds. In fact, she spent her summer in Hawaii working at the Parker Ranch where she focused on carcass genetics. Grace would also like to work in consumer education, as well as have her own cow-calf operation someday. As a member of the seedstock team, one of Grace’s favorite things is working with the show cattle.
— Grace IngleeBailee is a senior at CSU studying Animal Science and is a returning member to the 2022-2023 team. Bailee loves working with the genetics and data behind the scenes to make educated breeding decisions and would like to one day work with producers to help make selections to improve their own herds. Her favorite part about being on the team is getting to connect with people within the industry as well as working hands-on with the cattle in our CSU herd. After graduation, Bailee hopes to continue learning by doing within different parts of the cattle industry while applying skills and knowledge gained at CSU.
—Bailee JonesKira is a Senior at CSU double majoring in Animal and Equine Sciences. After graduation, Kira would like to pursue a Masters degree in Animal Reproduction and later teach at a junior college while also returning to her family’s purebred Hereford operation. Kira has shown Herefords for over a decade, and the Seedstock Team allows her to represent her university and continue her passion for Hereford cattle. She has enjoyed getting to know her teammates, visiting other seedstock operations, studying genetics and making breeding decisions, and learning more about showing seedstock cattle. When she’s not in the barn or in class, Kira enjoys riding and training horses and shooting sports. — Kira
SayreKate is a Senior at CSU majoring in Animal Science, and after graduation she would like to pursue a Masters in Animal Breeding and Genetics. One day, she would like to have her own purebred cow-calf operation, and maybe even be a professor. For Kate, the most interesting aspects of the seedstock industry are studying EPDs and data, as well as the people she’s met and the connections she’s made. Kate and her family have a small herd of purebred Shorthorns that she enjoys studying and showing when she’s not on campus. —
Kate ScottJustina is in her fourth year studying Animal Science and Ag Business. She hopes to work for a cow-calf operation or a seedstock company after graduation and later has hopes of returning to the Navajo Nation to manage tribal ranches. In her free time, Justina enjoys traveling back to New Mexico to enjoy all the Mexican food and swing her leg over her horse, Rooster, for a jackpot roping or ranching. Her favorite thing about being on the team is learning by doing and learning to market purebred cattle through presentation and genetics.
—
Dr. Cunningham is a 4th generation rancher raised on her family’s ranch in Western Nebraska. Growing up she was actively involved in breeding and marketing her family’s purebred cattle on and off of the ranch and showcasing cattle across the country, including in The Yards during the National Western. Her passion for agriculture took her south to Texas for 4 degrees at prestigious institutions. A livestock judging career at Clarendon College and Texas Tech inspired her to pursue graduate degrees in Animal Breeding and Beef Production at Texas A&M. She’s excited to bring a passion for students and experiences from the R.A. Brown Ranch and Western Illinois University to help Rams learn by doing as they study the rich tradition of seedstock production and marketing. Sam is looking forward to continuing the rich legacy that Dr. Bob Taylor left long ago, and she hopes to do this through breeding decisions, challenging hands-on experiences, and rich industry interactions.
— Samantha Cunningham, PhDWelcome to the 46th Annual CSU Bull & Female Sale

Forty-six years of tradition and proven performance. Colorado State University is rich in tradition and the Annual Bull & Female Sale is no exception. As you preview the information to follow, please note that we are once again selling ageadvantaged bulls. These bulls are ready to work and should be able to cover more females. New this year, you’ll find bulls and females from the CSU-Beef Improvement Center (CSU-BIC) at Saratoga, WY. We have partnered with CSU-BIC to deliver you registered Angus bulls born and raised at higher elevations. These cattle were brought to CSU-ARDEC after weaning and developed alongside the Angus and Herefords born and raised here near Fort Collins. Cattle from CSU-BIC will be identified as such later in this catalog.

Listed on the following pages you will find performance, ultrasound, reproductive, and pedigree information, as well as EPDs on nearly 40 bulls and females from a source you can trust. All cattle in the sale have tested free of persistent BVD. Every bull listed in the catalog has undergone a complete reproductive and soundness exam to ensure that they are ready to go to work for you. All females have been palpated safe in calf as recent as 30-days prior to sale day.
After weaning, bulls and females were tested for gain, feed efficiency, and carcass traits before spending the summer grazing. Bulls grazed range mountain conditions at 7,000 ft elevation near Saratoga, WY. Bulls returned to CSU-ARDEC mid-fall where they have continued through the development phase. Hereford females spent the summer as part of an intensive grazing management program at CSU-ARDEC. The commercial Angus females listed here are from our CSU-Beef Improvement Center herd at Saratoga, WY. All cattle listed here have been PAP tested by Dr. Tim Holt.
Students in our Seedstock Merchandising courses have been heavily involved in the selection and preparation of animals for this year’s sale. The Seedstock Merchandising Team, as well as others, have taken bull photos, written catalog comments, evaluated data, as well as helped to clip sale cattle. The Seedstock Team also exhibited two pens of Herefords at the National Western Stock Show. In Denver, we were fortunate to win Division Champion Spring Yearling Bulls, Division Champion Spring Yearling Females, as well as sell “pick of the pen” from our pen of females during the National Western Hereford Sale. The Seedstock Team thanks Mr. Boyd Meyer for his purchase of CSU Miss Masterplan 1211.
As in recent years, this year’s sale will be at Centennial Livestock Auction in Fort Collins. We have once again partnered with DV Auctions to provide our customers and community the ability to view the sale and bid online. We will be selling cattle at Centennial on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 11 a.m. If you will be bidding online, we suggest that you register to bid prior to Sale Day. If you have questions or are interested in bidding alternatives, please reach out to the sale representatives listed in the catalog.
We invite you to view the bulls any time prior to the sale at the ARDEC facility. Please reach out to any of the sale representatives for more information on the sale and the cattle listed in this catalog. The Seedstock Team would love to preview the cattle for you before sale day; please contact Sam Cunningham to schedule a visit. The Norgren Family has supported the CSU Hereford herd and Seedstock Merchandising Team since 2008.
Don loved Herefords and CSU and was proud to support their ventures. He took great pride in visiting with the faculty working with the herd and the team, offering sound Hereford advice and looking at their herd. Even after his passing in 2020, the Norgren Family has continued his involvement with the herd and the Seedstock Team.

The CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team appreciates the continued support of the Norgren Family. We were fortunate to host them at ARDEC this fall to update them on the current herd, as well as the team’s activities. It has been a pleasure to work with them to continue Don’s legacy.

CSU Powerball Ram 1104

This bull had one of the largest adjusted weaning weights in our Angus offering and is sure to produce calves that grow the same as his WW and YW EPDs are among the highest of the Angus bulls here. No matter how you market your calves, this bull should give you options.
If you are looking for a moderately framed bull that’s low PAP, here he is! This bull is good footed, offers some rib shape and is good boned. He would be ideal to use on your heifers with a stellar CED EPD of 15 and a BW EPD of -3.7!
CSU Capitalist Ram 1105
This Capitalist son is long spined and deep bodied bull with plenty of shape—he had the largest REA ratio of any Angus bull here. This combined with his above average growth columns make him a solid choice to run at more moderate elevations (yearling PAP = 44)
Wide-topped, bold ribbed, and big boned are a few of many words you could use to describe 1112. This clean fronted bull is sound moving ith great muscle shape and the second highest IMF ratio of any Angus bull in the offering. 1114

This McIntosh Moose son out of a Payweight daughter is as sound as they get and tracks like a cat. He displays a nice shape to his rib and depth throughout his body, with nice muscling from his shoulder back through to his loin. On paper, this bull brings calving ease and low birth weight to the table, sitting in the top 4% of the breed for birth weight and top 10% for calving ease. Additionally, he sits in the top 3% of the breed for PAP EPD, and has a recorded PAP of 38.

CSU Jet Stream Ram J1536
J1573
This Jet Stream son is THICK. He comes in a powerful package with a great top, bold rib, and width behind. With $B and $C indexes in the top 15% and 5% of the breed, respectively, this bull has profit potential in the feedyard and on the ranch. Don’t overlook this bull.
CSU Centerfire Ram J1691
J1573 CSU Rainfall Ram J1573

This handsome, rugged made Rainfall son is low PAP with responsible CE and BW figures. He should do well at elevation and sire calves with look and mass.
J1691
This Centerfire son should be a surefire calving ease option with a CED and BWT EPDs in the 4% and 2% of the breed, as well as CEM and $C figures in the top 15%. His strengths don’t stop there, this long-bodied, stout featured bull’s progeny should also give you advantage on the rail, as well.

CSU Rangefinder Ram J1760
He’s long bodied, good fronted, and big bodied with a 38 yearling PAP. This Rangefinder son should add pounds and look to your calf crop.
J1765

This Connealy Combination son is pure power—he’s sound, huge middled, and stout featured. Stand behind this bull and you’ll find lots of width and shape. Combine these with his responsible CE and BW numbers and you have a bull that should work well in many herds. J1760

This stout, rugged young sire was a member our pen in Denver. He’s long bodied and big footed with amazing rib shape. He’s horned, but we don’t mind because he’s super sound. This bull should make females with SCF, TEAT, and UDDR numbers all in the top 1% of the breed. His trait success doesn’t stop the the maternal columns, he also posts REA & CHB EPDs in the top 3% and MARB in the top 15% of the breed. This bull is a great opportunity to take advantage of Small Town Kid genetics without worry, as he tested MDF.
CSU MANDATE RAM 1205
We like this HOMOZYGOUS POLLED Mandate son so well that we used him as a pasture bull on our heifers this summer and entered him in the pen in Denver! This dark red bull is long bodied and jam packed with shape. He has a quiet disposition and ranks in the top 2% and 3% for CED and BW EPDs. His weaning and yearling numbers are in the top 10% of the breed; and his TEAT & UDDR EPDs rank in the top 1% as well.

This Mandate son is the perfect calving ease and low birth weight option for heifers in your herd. This solid, well-built bull has CED and BWT EPDs in the top 1% and 2% of the breed, respectively. He should also improve the herd’s maternal genetics as well as carcass potential with BMI and CHB indexes in the top 15% and 10%. You can confidently use this bull at higher elevations--look at that 35 yearling PAP score!

CSU MANDATE RAM 1207
This dark pigmented Mandate son is big footed and sound tracking—he should handle pastures with ease; especially those at higher elevations with a 36 yearling PAP. His EPD profile is as balanced as they come ranking in the top 25% or higher for CE, BW, WW and YW. This bull also had the highest IMF ratio of any Hereford in this offering leading to his top 5% ranking marbling EPD and CHB index. This indicates that he should sire cattle that are profitable on the rail, but do not overlook his potential to sire daughters who should make great replacements.
CSU KID RAM 1208 {MDC}

This horned, Small Town Kid son would be an ideal option for someone looking to make baldy females as he ranks in the top 1% and 2% for UDDR and TEAT EPDs. Not only is he big topped with plenty of look and eye appeal, but he’s also bold ribbed and sound on a big foot. This bull’s pedigree is unique to study between his sire (Small Town Kid) and his dam, a young cow that goes back to Catapult 109. We sold a paternal half-sister to him in the NWSS Herefords in the Yards Sale in ’22 for $9,000, and his paternal half-brother was a member of our pen of Spring Yearling Bulls in Denver this year (1204 also listed in this catalog).
CSU MANDATE RAM 1210 {MDF}

Another bull from our Denver pen this year. The potential carcass contributions of this Mandate son should not to be overlooked. This bull ranks in the top 2% of the breed for MARB and CHB. That’s additional profit in your pocket! He offers a unique shape in a sound package; plus, he has CED, WW, and YW EPDs in the top 15% of the breed and a BW EPD in the top 10%.

Look at those maternal figures—top 3% SFC, 4% Milk, and 4% BMI. Don’t miss this opportunity to obtain genetics from leading young sire, Genesis.

CSU

ARDEC staff and students, this Entice son is hard to miss among his buddies. He is stout boned and big footed with an impressive natural width throughout without sacrificing any ounce of soundness. Extremely long bodied, he also brings excellent rib shape and depth of body, along with a powerful muscle shape. Plus, he sports pigment over both eyes. Among other noticeable traits, this bull also measured a 44 cm scrotal at a year of age and sits within the top 1% of the breed for scrotal measurements. This bull should sire calves that will grow well and add pounds to any endpoint, being in the top 1% of the breed for weaning weight, yearling weight and in the top 10% for carcass weight.

PERFECTO RAM 1238 {MDC}
This moderate, level toped, red necked bull would make a great option for those cattlemen (and women) looking for a bull to use on black cows to make baldies. Looking at his genetic profile, there are multiple directions you could use this Perfecto 84F son. His CE and BW EPDs are more than responsible. His growth columns rank in the top 10% of the breed. Plus, he ranks in the top 1% for SCF and REA EPDs lending us to believe that could sire replacement females or feeder cattle with profit potential. If you’re looking for a young sire to run at higher elevation, look in—he had a yearling pap of 37.

CSU PERFECTO RAM 1239

is perhaps one of the coolest Herefords CSU has bred. His dam was in our 2020 Champion Spring Yearling Pen of Heifers. His maternal granddam has generated more progeny and grandprogeny sales for us than any other female in our herd, and she has 4 daughters and 1 granddaughter in production. A member of our ‘23 Denver pen, he’s got pigment on both eyes and is homozygous polled. There’s a lot of bull in this stout, good profiling package. He has amazing rib shape and base width behind. More than phenotype, he’s in the top 10% for low BW, and the top 5% and 10%, respectively for WW and YW; plus, he ranks in the top 1% for REA. You won’t miss this one. We sold a maternal half-sister to this bull in the 2022 Herefords in the Yards Sale in Denver for $9,000 last year. CSU Miss Spoiler 0251 was a powerhouse on paper and in the pen, and this bull isn’t far behind. Sired by the late Perfecto 84F, his EPDs for BW, WW, and YW rank in the top 15% of the breed. With a SCF EPD in the top 1% and TEAT and UDDR figures in the top 5% and 10%, respectively, this bull has the potential to not only sire a well-rounded calf crop that grows, but you should find plenty of replacement female options there too. He’s a moderate, calving ease bull with a conservative BW figure— he’s in the top 3% of the breed for both CE and BW. With a 36 yearling PAP and easy stride, he’s an ideal option for any elevation. This big middled, thick made bull should offer flexibility when making breeding decisions—his calves should come easy and grow. With an REA EPD in the top 10% of the breed, they should be thick too. He doesn’t stop there, his SCF, UDDR, and TEAT columns lead us to suggest that he’ll also sire daughters that will make excellent replacements. CSU GENESIS RAM 1272 ET
This big, long bodied Geneis son ranks near the top of the breed for Marb & CHB. Plus, he’s sure to add growth and carcass performance to any herd. This bull’s pedigree isn’t one to miss. Lowen Genesis on the top and a Barber Ranch donor on the bottom.
CSU MASTERPLAN RAM 1259
Ideal for commercial cattlemen (and women) this Masterplan son out of a Trust daughter sits in the top 1% of the breed for CHB and IMF. He also sits within the top 5% for YW and top 10% for CW within the breed. Phenotypically, he brings excellent rib shape and depth throughout, along with a level topline and excellent muscling from his shoulder all the way back to his loin and flank.
This dark red Klondike 697A son had one of the largest adjusted yearling weights of any Hereford bull listed here. He’s the youngest in the catalog, but you’d never know. If you’re looking to add growth and size to your calf crop, here’s a bull that should do just that. He’s a maternal grandson of Validated, so it’s no secret that he should sire calves that marble well too.

Need a Hereford heifer bull? Look no further than this bull who goes back to Excede on the top and Leader on the bottom. He’s in the top 2% for CED and 5% for BW EPDs, his SC and SCF numbers also indicated that he should make daughters that will reach puberty early, calve easily, and remain in the cow herd for many years to come.

Sired by the prominent Hereford bull, Churchill Sensation 028X, this moderate, well-balanced bull should add marbling and look to your calf crop. Don’t overlook this bull if you’re in the business of making Hereford replacement females.

One of the few horned bulls offered in this sale, this Churchill Sensation028X son combines both maternal and growth traits with pigment and power combining pedigree and performance in an eye-appealing package. Higher elevations shouldn’t be a problem for this rugged, sound moving bull with a yearling PAP score of 36.
