Sofia Ionescu Ogrezeanu The first female neurosurgeon in the world

Early life Sofia Ionescu-Ogrezeanu (25 April 1920 – 21 March 2008) was a Romanian neurosurgeon and is considered one of the first female neurosurgeons in the world. Ionescu was born in Fălticeni, Suceava, daughter of Constantin Ogrezeanu, a bank cashier, and Maria Ogrezeanu, housewife. Sofia Ogrezeanu attended the Central School of Girls in Bucharest and in 1939, after taking the Bacalaureat, entered the Faculty of Medicine. Initially, he coquetted by the idea of becoming an ophthalmologist and after being sent to an internship near Falticeni, he seemed determined to return to his hometown as an internist. It would have led a quiet life, but to the luck of a few thousand patients, fate prepared something else... •

Professional activity The year 1944, although the year of the terrible disasters caused by the war, nevertheless meant a decisive moment in Sophia Ionescu's career. It happened that, following the frequent bombing of Bucharest, at the same time, too many injured were brought in relation to the small number of doctors who had to save their lives. In this context, an injured child, for whom surgery was of the utmost urgency, was brought in at a time when no doctor was available. To the surprise of everyone, especially Dr. Bagdasar, the young student offered to operate it, an intervention that proved salvation. "This operation - will confess Sofia Ionescu - decided my life for 47 years before, while I was in neurosurgery, and it brought me 180 degrees from what I had proposed, a quiet life of doctor internist in my hometown, Fălticeni "

Awards, performance diplomas and merits For the outstanding merits proven since the student years, Sofia Ionescu was

rewarded with the Red Cross Distinction Mark (1943), with the badge "highlighted in medical-sanitary Work (1957), with the medal" The twentieth anniversary of the liberation of the Homeland "(1964), with Medal "25 years after the proclamation of the Republic" (1972). In 1996 he received the Anfdur Honorary Diploma for Outstanding Merit, the "Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu" award and the honorary Diploma of the National Women's Confederation in Romania. Also in that year, 1996, he became a member of the Romanian Society of Medicine History, and on 29 March 1997, Emerit member of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He was awarded the honorary Diploma of A.N.F.D.U.R., "engineer Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu" award, Honorary Diploma for Outstanding Merit in the promotion of science and Technology in Romania, honorary Diploma of the Society of Medicine History, Diploma of Citizen of Honour of the Fălticeni municipality and the Medal of Honor of the same municipality, culminating in awarding the highest award in Romania, the Star of the Republic, as a knight, which he received in early March 2008.

Memories gathered around the world In 1970, the Sheikh of Abu Dhabi sought a neurosurgeon to deal with one of the spouses' sales. Because religion requires that the specialist be only a woman, and at that time it was almost impossible, Sofia Ionescu was the salvation of the Arab. His exceptional professional qualities often reflect the curiosity of his guild colleagues. So, in the same year, Sofia Ionescu accompanied a patient at the French Embassy in Paris and Lyon. Arrived in front of French doctors, the Romanian Doctor was greeted with wonder because they can not believe there may be a woman neurosurgeon. So, in order to convince, the French doctors asked Sofia Ionescu to express his hands to see if they were specified on the ring, a sign of the neurosurgeons, as a result of using a specific instrument of the job. To their surprise, the Romanian doctor has exceeded their expectations.

Life, between family and patients No special performance, such as that of Sofia Ionescu, can be obtained without support, in this case of her husband, a partner in the opera and living room, the one who always understood it and who was proud of it Medicine has always been her guide in life. As a result, the Doctor was married to Dr. Ionel Ionescu, a member of the "gold" team of neurosurgeon doctors in Romania, at the graduation of the faculty. They had two children together, Constantine and Ioana. Their family life but also in the middle of the patients was lived. For 7 years they lived in the hospital, providing both permanent guard and 15 years of life meant only uninterrupted work, no rest leave. Every morning, Sofia Ionescu carried out brain operations, and in the afternoon, on the column.
