Welcome to the Spring 2024 Performing Arts Season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. Whether you are a first-time or long-time patron, a friend, or parent to one of our exceptional students, thank you for joining us. Your support makes all the difference to their success.

I am pleased to present another semester of programming powered by the incredible gifts of our Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre students. This spring, the School of Music starts the season with a trio of concerts February 16–18 by artists-in-residence Talich Quartet; faculty artist Damon Zick and his Quarteto Nuevo featuring fellow faculty artist Bill Cunliffe; and University Symphony Orchestra. In May, University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will close the concert season with a performance of Mozart’s emotionally charged “Requiem.” Begovich Gallery presents the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series with visiting artists’ talks throughout the semester, including multidisciplinary artist Hings Lim on February 22, whose work will also be exhibited at Grand Central Art Center. The Department of Theatre and Dance begins their season in March with “Marisol,” a darkly comedic fantasy where the title character must find hope in a post-apocalyptic Brooklyn where angels are taking up arms and coffee is extinct. Hilarious, multiple Tony award-winning modern musical send-up “Urinetown” closes the theatre season just as CSUF’s dancers and choreographers take to the stage for “Spring Dance Theatre.”

When our students demonstrate their talents on stage and in the studio, their creative energy is undeniable, but the sacrifice and struggle it took to get there is often less perceptible. We can’t see the hours spent creating, the days of rehearsals, and the years of practice. For many students, the sparks of innovation and artistry that drove them to pursue the arts are often diminished by the high cost of an education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides support for students in need through scholarships, artist residencies, and other financial assistance, ensuring them the opportunity to thrive in the arts. If you believe in their sparks of brilliance, please consider a donation of any amount to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.

Thank you again for joining us this season and for championing the arts in higher education. I hope to see you at one of the college’s many performances and events this spring.

Sincerely,

WHY CSU FULLERTON?

Introduction

The Vocal/Choral/Opera programs at CSUF offer a variety of opportunities for singers and conductors at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Students receive a specialized yet comprehensive education while preparing for careers as performers, teachers and conductors. Classical Singer Magazine recognized the Opera Theatre and vocal programs for excellence in training young singers for professional operatic careers.

Private lessons in voice are the core of each of the study programs in voice and are solely taught by members of our well-respected faculty. The program also includes courses in vocal literature, vocal pedagogy, art song, opera literature and foreign-language diction. Students receive individual attention and perform frequently in recitals and master classes.

CSUF boasts five outstanding choral ensembles: University Singers, Concert Choir, Titan Men’s Chorus, Women’s Choir, and Jazz Singers, conducted by acclaimed faculty members. The ensembles regularly tour both locally and internationally, performing at numerous national and regional conventions and with major orchestras including the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Choral conducting classes are available at the undergraduate level, with advanced conducting seminars and private lessons available at the graduate level.

Students in choral music education receive advanced training in choral conducting, voice and choral/teaching pedagogy. In addition to developing outstanding musical, teaching, and performance skills, these students usually continue on after graduation to earn a California teaching credential, and to become leaders in the choral music teaching profession. These students may also access all courses and performing activities offered in the vocal area. All choral music education students gain significant experience in solo vocal performance, choral performance, vocal pedagogy, diction, and solo/choral

literature. Weekly half hour lessons are offered as a core experience in this degree path.

The graduate degree program in choral conducting provides an intensive experience designed to enhance conducting skill while increasing aptitude in scholarly practice. The Master of Music in Choral Conducting degree prepares students for advanced ventures in conducting and entrance into doctoral programs of study. Alumni of the M.M. in Choral Conducting are regularly accepted at conducting programs of note throughout the United States including the University of Southern California, University of Michigan, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Opera Program

Each fall CSUF Opera Theatre presents a program of opera excerpts and oneacts designed to provide performance opportunities for our singers. Each spring semester, fully staged operatic productions with orchestra are mounted, which have included Candide, La Bohème, Street Scene, The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, The Crucible, Le Nozze di Figaro, Gianni Schicchi, The Elixir of Love, A Wake or a Wedding, and The Merry Widow. Beyond the campus productions are offered at Leisure World in Orange County and other venues. Operatic productions have included The Magic Flute, Candide and The Old Maid and the Thief. Singers are also given the opportunity to participate in all aspects of opera production including staging, costumes, props, make-up, set design, and lighting.

Alumni

The Vocal/Choral/Opera program has a long list of professionally successful alumni who are active in both educational and performance careers, among them internationally recognized singers Deborah Voigt, Rod Gilfry, Charles Castronovo, Diane Elias and Jubilant Sykes, and esteemed conductors Peter Rutenberg, Gary McKercher, Gordon Paine, Ricardo Soto, Stan Hill, Robert Istad and Robert Geary.

ABOUT THE ADJUDICATOR

John began composing choral music in his late teens out of necessity to provide music for his church choir that was accessible and appropriate for the need. This practice continued with his high school choirs and then his college choirs. Today his choral pieces have been performed nationally and internationally for concerts, festivals, choral conventions and international choral competitions.

John Tebay began his career in 1981 as the director of choral activities at El Dorado High School in Placentia, California. He has been director of choral studies at Fullerton College in Southern California, since 1985. During that time, he has conducted the 110-voice Concert Choir, the Chamber Singers, the Collegiate Chorale, the Men’s Chorale, the Women’s Chorale, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the song and dance troupe, Bravo. His choirs have performed throughout the United States and Canada. They have performed at ACDA, CASMEC, CMEA and NCCO Conventions, and they have been a guest choir in Mainland China, performing with the Beijing University Symphony and the Shanghi University Symphony. In addition, the choir has competed in the International Eisteddfod Choral Competition in Llangollen Wales, the Seghizzi International Choral Competition in Gorizia, Italy, and the Singkreis Porcia Spittal Choral Competition in Spittal, Austria. He has conducted regional and all-state honor choirs, and has been a choral adjudicator, clinician and competition judge throughout the Western United States.

ABOUT THE ADJUDICATOR

Nicola Dedmon has been a full-time faculty member in the Fullerton College Music Department since 2015 and currently serves as Coordinator of Choral Studies, where she oversees a robust program of four different choral ensembles and conducts the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. She has also taught Applied Voice lessons, Music Theory, and Music Appreciation. She has also served as Music Director for numerous mainstage Musical Theater productions within Fullerton College’s Theatre Department. She has also served on several different campus-wide committees and is passionate about the deep sense of community at Fullerton College.

Nicola grew up in Washington, D.C., where she began studying classical music from a young age. She eventually went on to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, where she first discovered her passion for choral music and conducting. After JMU, she began her graduate coursework at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, where she earned her Master of Music degree in choral conducting under the tutelage of Dr. Joe Miller and Dr. Amanda Quist. While at Westminster, she served as the graduate conducting assistant of the Westminster Chapel Choir. Also during her time at Westminster, she sang in the internationally-renown Westminster Choir, the Westminster Symphonic Choir, and Kantorei. Through her participation in these ensembles, she performed frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic under the batons of Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Alan Gilbert, Daniele Gati, Vladimir Yurowski, among others. She also spent two summers as a member of the choirin-residence at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina. Most importantly, a winter Westminster Choir tour down the coast of California caused her to fall in love with the West Coast, and more specifically, Southern California. She now happily resides in North Tustin with her husband, Nicholas Dedmon.

ABOUT THE ADJUDICATOR

Tram Sparks is Chair and Associate Professor of Practice at the USC Thornton School of Music. Prior to her work in Los Angeles, Sparks was Associate Professor and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Temple University Boyer College of Music & Dance, where she taught from 1999-2009. Dr. Sparks taught graduate and undergraduate courses in choral literature, conducting, and aural theory, and conducted the Concert Choir, University Chorale, Women’s Chorus and University Singers over the course of her ten years at Temple University. In addition to her appointment at Temple, she has served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Dordt University (Sioux Center, Iowa) and Director of the Choral Program at St. Joseph’s University (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

A native of Vietnam and a child refugee of the Vietnam War, Tram’s earliest musical training was in Okinawa, Japan and subsequently, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Division where she studied piano, solfege, and eurythmics and sang in a children’s choir. Sparks earned the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and the Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Temple University. Her piano training with Harvey Wedeen and David L. Stone follows in the pedagogical lineages of Adele Marcus, Isabelle Vengerova, and Josef Lhevinne.

Tram holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from Yale University. At the Yale School of Music and working with conducting mentor Marguerite L. Brooks, she completed the interdisciplinary certificate program in Music, Worship and the Arts at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

In the community, Tram has served on the Board of Directors of Tonality and as music director at churches and synagogues in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. She is a frequent choral clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor. Recent artistic collaborations include an appearance as guest conductor of the festival chorus and the New England Symphonic Ensemble, performing Gabriel Faure’s Requiem at Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.

Trams’ research interests include conducting technique rooted in modern dance theory (specifically, Graham Technique® and Laban movement analysis) and cheironomy – its forms and functions in contemporaneous early communities of worship.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Christopher Peterson is a teacher, conductor, choral clinician, author, editor, and choral arranger of music and books published in the United States and around the world. In his over thirty years as a music educator he has taught in elementary, middle school, high school, church, community, festival, and collegiate settings. He earned the Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Southern Maine in choral and instrumental music education and taught music for nine years in the public schools of Maine. He earned the Master of Music in Choral Conducting degree at the University of Maine, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education and Choral Conducting at Florida State University. At CSUF Chris trains and mentors undergraduate and graduate choral music educators and conductors and directs the Concert Choir and the Singing Titans Chorus.
