CHA NG E MA KERS IN O U R MI D ST We’ve all heard the maxim, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” It’s a call to action that resonates with so many of us at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and this issue of Dominguez Today, with the theme “Making Connections, Facilitating Impact,” showcases the very deliberate ways in which so many individuals connect with this university and help influence the success of our students and ultimately their communities.

In 2015, the university formed the CSU Dominguez Hills Philanthropic Foundation with the intention of building a board of directors whose members are dedicated partners to the university and, as leaders in their fields, bring expertise and industry connections to the table that can strengthen CSUDH. Their passion for our mission is already demonstrating itself in tangible and impactful ways, from high-tech mobile laboratories, an entertainment industry panel presentation, access to valuable internships, much-needed faculty support, and several million dollars in corporate and personal gifts. In this issue, we highlight the new Philanthropic Foundation and projects it has helped facilitate.

Another meaningful example of making connections and affecting change is the university’s partnership with artist and social activist Forest Whitaker. He has famously excelled in his career, but his passion rests with connecting people and programs.

The nonprofit Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative, which he founded, partnered with the university on a recently launched three-year pilot program that integrates conflict resolution into middle school curriculum.

Also in this issue, the DH Arts Collective student organization proves that transcontinental understanding is possible, no matter where you live. This past fall, art students created paintings reflecting various aspects of their lives and exchanged similar artwork with students at Kobe Design University in Japan. The subsequent exhibition was very popular and reflected the diversity and commonalities we all share.

This art exchange was facilitated by Devon Tsuno, assistant professor of art and design, who is also profiled in this issue for his many years of socially engaged art. A much-lauded artist in his own right, Tsuno actively creates art projects that draw participation from the community. He’s established that practice at CSUDH with the Praxis Studio, which brings high school students to campus to work with professional artists and understand the importance of expression in its various forms.

Opening doors for all is at the forefront of the tireless work and research performed by Assistant Professor of Physics Ximena Cid. Our profile explores the ways in which she is working to make sure that more people of color find a career in physics, a discipline that has not had a tradition of diversity. Among her many projects, the Día de la Física (Day of Physics) helps CSUDH physics students make the professional connections they need to become part of the scientific community.

To underscore the idea that even the smallest action can have large repercussions, 900 members of the class of 2016 raised an impressive $17,000 in their Senior Gift Campaign, which resulted in solar charging stations installed on campus. In this issue, we also recognize and thank our many donors who made 2015-16 a banner year for fundraising. Their generosity truly does help us have the impact we work toward in launching the careers and expanding the lives of our students so they, too, can change the world. Thank you.

University Provides Tutoring, Professional Development in Compton Schools Compton Unified School District has awarded CSUDH a contract to deliver tutoring programs for students and professional development for the district’s middle school math teachers.

Through the contract, CSUDH’s California STEM Institute for Innovation and Improvement (CSI3) has launched the Compton-Toros Academy, offering supplemental math and English instruction and tutoring after school and on Saturdays. The academy is open to the district’s 1,350 third through 12th grade students. Tutors include education, math and English majors from CSUDH under guidance from credentialed and seasoned CSI3 teachers.

“Unlike conventional tutoring programs, the students will be doing fun, handson STEM activities that they will look forward to each day,” said Kamal Hamdan, director of the Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE) at CSUDH, which oversees the CSI3 program. “Their parents will also be invited to participate so they may experience how their kids are learning, as well as learn along with them. Some of the Saturday sessions will have a carnival-type atmosphere.”

The contract also extends Project Reach, a classroom-based tutoring program throughout the district, and provides for professional development for Compton Unified’s middle school math teachers.

Changing the Game for the South Bay Economy

More than 240 local business men and women spent a morning on campus this past fall to gain insights on the current state and outlook of the region’s economy and hear about game-changing projects and developments during the second annual CSUDH South Bay Economic Forecast Conference “A Region in Transition: Game Changers.”

The only comprehensive look at the South Bay business region, the 44-page South Bay Economic Forecast report, prepared

by Beacon Economics for the university, projects slow but steady growth in the South Bay’s primary economic indicators.

Specifically, the report notes employment in incorporated cities is estimated to rise 1.8 percent; payroll of workers will increase from 4.0 to 4.1 percent; and taxable sales will markedly increase from 2.5 to 4.1 percent, or by $537 million. Home sales also jumped in 2016 and more growth is expected in 2017.

Showcasing research by faculty in the College of Business Administration and Public Policy, the morning included presentations by co-directors of the CSUDH Economics Institute, Assistant Professor of Economics Jose Martinez and Assistant Professor of Public Policy Fynnwin Prager. Martinez discussed his findings on the South Bay housing market as well as employment distribution, addressing implications for educational attainment

requirements for the region’s workers.

and discussed the most anticipated project in the South Bay, the NFL stadium in Inglewood, and its regional impact.

“The model could capture [effects of] policy reforms, such as changes to minimum wage laws, and economic shocks and game changers, such as the benefits of a new professional sports team to the region, and the impact of extreme events, such as earthquakes, terrorist attacks, El Segundo and infrastructure failings,” Prager says.

The morning concluded with an inside look at companies and developments that are changing the game for their industries and for the region, such as Millennium Space Systems in El Segundo, which is focused on high-quality affordable satellites; KitePharma and its breakthrough therapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma; and the $150 million San Pedro Public Market development at the Port of Los Angeles.

One literal game-changer for the region is the return of the Los Angeles Rams. Kevin Demoff, executive vice president and COO of Football Operations for the Los Angeles Rams, was among the featured panelists

California State University, Dominguez Hills’ renewed relationship with the Port of Los Angeles has resulted in a new agreement.

Earlier this summer, the university and the port, along with Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that provides the framework for creating refined global logistics curricula at both campuses, and lecture and internship opportunities that will help prepare students for new and emerging trends in port logistics.

Kelly is executive director of the nonprofit Los Angeles Coalition for the Economy and Jobs, which is dedicated to ensuring a path for economic growth and the creation and retention of quality jobs in the Los Angeles region. Prior to the coalition, he served as the manager of California Government Relations for the Boeing Company. He also served as deputy director of the California Film Commission under California Governors Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Philanthropic Foundation Development Committee member Domingo Camarano is the Southern California and South Nevada project manager/ construction manager business line leader for AECOM, a multinational Los Angeles-based engineering and construction firm. Camarano helped establish an AECOM summer internship for CSUDH students. Janna Bersi is a professor of graduate education at CSUDH and former associate vice president for academic resources management and planning. Before coming to CSUDH, Bersi was vice president of finance and CFO of Chapman University.

Marilyn Sutton is a professor emerita of English at CSUDH, where she served on the faculty for 35 years. She has substantial philanthropic experience having served on several boards, including Loyola Marymount, The Claremont Graduate School, and Southern California Public Radio (KPPC). Her wealth of experience and commitment to CSUDH provide a deep understanding and history of the institution.

PRISCILLA HERNANDEZ — CSUDH student representative Priscilla Hernandez serves as the voice of CSUDH students on the Board of Directors, sharing their collective point of view and representing what best benefits and has the greatest impact on students. Hernandez is a sociology major with a minor in psychology.

Yolanda “Cookie” Parker is a respected Los Angeles tech entrepreneur, activist, and philanthropist. Her company The Parker Group LLC is leading the redevelopment of South Los Angeles into a tech hub called “Silicon South.” She previously founded and was president of KMS Software Company, which created the first cloudbased human resources software.

Monica Chuo is a marketing and brand consultant for Disney Interactive and My Damn Channel on YouTube, and also a consulting producer for YouTube. Earlier in her career, she was vice president of worldwide acquisitions for Paramount Pictures. Chuo is establishing new relationships for the university and expanding opportunities for CSUDH students through her connections in the television and film industry.

Recently, Chuo facilitated a donation that brought a director from SAGindie to CSUDH’s Hollywood by the Horns program.

Phillip M. Tate is vice president of development and government affairs at Kilroy Realty Corporation, serving as inhouse land use and development counsel. He oversees Kilroy’s government affairs activities, and interfaces with government officials regarding various issues related to Kilroy’s properties. Tate’s experience has proven invaluable as he serves on the university’s Master Plan Steering Committee.

MICHAEL ROUSE — (’83, MBA, business administration)

Michael Rouse is the recently retired president of Toyota USA Foundation, leading Toyota’s key national programs focusing on education, the environment, and safety.

He also served as a vice president with Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., responsible for corporate diversity and inclusion, philanthropy, and community relations. Rouse led the way for Toyota to make a significant donation of a fleet of four high-tech mobile fabrication laboratories pulled by four Toyota Tundra trucks to take STEM education directly to schools and students in the Los Angeles region.

MARTHA J. KANTER

Martha J. Kanter served as U.S. undersecretary of education for President Barack Obama. She is the former president of De Anza College and past chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Kanter currently serves as the executive director of the College Promise Campaign, working to help provide tuition and fees for U.S. students enrolling and completing the first two years of college. She also is a distinguished visiting professor of higher education and senior fellow at New York University.

Ken Putnam is a well-known local attorney, private businessman, and an entrepreneur, who owns restaurants in Catalina and Long Beach. He is the former president and CEO of the MQ Power Corporation in Carson, and he sits on the board of Denyo Manufacturing Co. Over the last two decades, he has been deeply involved in activities at CSUDH, including service on the separate CSUDH Foundation Board of Directors, which was instrumental in the expansion of the university’s Loker Student Union.

This last summer, Saheidy Velazquez expanded her potential career options when she took on an internship in a professional world very different than the one she had envisioned when she started college.

The psychology major spent eight weeks as a project management/construction management intern at a Los Angeles-based architectural and engineering firm.

“I got to suit up with boots, an orange vest and hard helmet, and I was out on project sites learning terms and getting exposure to all the different jobs involved,” says Velazquez. “Prior to this internship, I saw myself as a therapist in a clinical practice.

I did a lot of peer counseling in high school, and I was able to make a difference. That’s why I decided to study psychology.”

Velazquez interned with AECOM, a position that company executive and current CSUDH Philanthropic Foundation Board Member Domingo Camarano made possible. The global Fortune 500 firm employs more than 95,000 people worldwide with projects in 150 countries consisting of large commercial, residential, infrastructure, and transportation ventures, including their work on the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. AECOM also is one of the largest builders of sports venues and is working on the new NFL stadium in Inglewood, which will host the L.A. Rams and Chargers football teams.

Velazquez found the company’s demanding schedules and work exhilarating. “It’s the business world, and I had a lot of responsibility. Their days begin at 6 a.m., and they are meeting and working with clients from all over the world. There was a lot of exposure to so many people, and as a psych major, I like connecting with people,” says Velazquez.

In addition to visiting job sites with Camarano, Velazquez also worked in AECOM’s office, and she immersed herself in the fast-paced environment. “It tested a lot of my strengths,” she says. A Pomona resident, Velazquez will complete her CSUDH bachelor’s degree in spring 2018 and plans to pursue a master’s degree.

On campus during the semester, she works in the Career Center, and she was impressed with the contrast in atmospheres.

“At the Career Center, I interact with a lot of students, and our connections are a lot less formal. During my internship, everyone was very direct, and the work was precise with important meetings and deadlines,” she adds.

A first-generation college student, Saheidy is well aware of the need to see an opportunity when it presents itself.

“I will be the first in my family to complete a degree, and that means the world to me, because I’m the eldest of three, and I can’t think of a better way to set an example than becoming a professional with a career,” she says.

“And working at AECOM really changed how I looked at what my career could be.

I met people in the firm who had psychology degrees, and I realized my degree could take me anywhere,” she adds.

“This was something completely different for me, and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try it.

What I learned was that I loved it.”

GOING PLACES WITH TOYOTA ALUMNUS MICHAEL ROUSE GETS MOBILE FAB LABS ROLLING

During a CSU Dominguez Hills Foundation Board of Directors meeting, Kamal Hamdan, Wallis Annenberg Endowed Professor and director of the Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE), proposed that the university use mobile fabrication laboratories to encourage young minds to explore or discover their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Hamdan’s enthusiasm caught the attention of CSUDH alumnus and Philanthropic Foundation board member Michael Rouse (’83, MBA, business administration), who at the time was vice president of diversity, philanthropy and community affairs at Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. and president of Toyota USA Foundation. He imagined a fab lab pulled by a Toyota Tundra.

“I thought, ‘We need to talk about this.’

So I brought the proposal back to our folks at Toyota, and everyone was quite enthusiastic about it—it wasn’t a hard sell at all. The idea was in line with Toyota’s commitment to diversity and helping the nation meet its need for STEM-educated students,” says Rouse, who retired in February 2016 after nearly 35 years with Toyota.

Rouse led the way for Toyota’s nearly $1 million donation—a $750,000 cash grant and four Toyota Tundra trucks—to build a fleet of four high-tech fab labs. The labs will be designed in partnership with teachers from Los Angeles Unified School District and Torrance Unified School District; engineers from Northrop Grumman and Motivo Engineering; the Fab Foundation; and Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM Education.

CISE will use the mobile labs to take STEM education directly to schools and students and help address issues at the heart of the STEM crisis in the region, not only by generating interest in science among children, but by attracting more women and minorities to STEM study and careers in related fields.

“The addition of these mobile labs also will be instrumental in our work with both aspiring and current math and science teachers to develop creative and innovative curricula in line with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core state standards,” says Hamdan.

Over the next five years, the CSUDH Mobile Fab Labs—under the umbrella of CISE—will prepare, train, and support more than 3,000 K-12 teachers and 5,000 students. More than 8,000 college students also will use the space to conduct research, collaborate and innovate, and engage thousands of local community members and professionals through various programs. The labs will travel to partner schools in the South Bay and Los Angeles to train both students and teachers in 2-D, 3-D, and electronics

design and fabrication—all with the goal of advancing their computational literacy and college readiness.

To expand their reach, each of the labs will be connected to an international network of fab labs, enabling teachers and students to collaborate with their peers in other countries. The university’s fab labs will be the first in Los Angeles to be part of the network, making them a model for STEM preparation in Southern California.

“It’s about getting kids enthusiastic about science at a young age, and then carrying that enthusiasm from elementary school and through to college, which will increase the talent pipeline in these critical industries,” says Rouse, who is now a member of the university’s Philanthropic

Foundation Board. “This is how you get it done, particularly for underserved communities where resources to create that enthusiasm may not always exist.”

Rouse looks forward to the day when the fab labs hit the streets, and he can see all the knowledge and excitement they generate for children and teachers, and CSUDH’s success in the endeavor, the university that he feels he “owes a debt of gratitude.”

A $300,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation also has been awarded to CSUDH for the mobile fab lab project. The W. M. Keck Foundation is a Los Angeles philanthropic institution whose support of Southern Californiabased organizations is focused on enriching lives in the region.

The incident, which took place in Lavia’s social studies class, may have had a different outcome had it happened the previous school year, before Carnegie students started learning to recognize conflicts and how to resolve them using techniques taught to them through the new Domestic Harmonizer Program.

“It was an interesting moment. I didn’t have to say a word. I just put the video back on and thought, ‘Wow, I don’t think that would have happened without us talking about dealing with conflict,’” recalls Lavia, who teaches 6th grade English and Social Studies.

“They’re already learning skills, and using them. They’re embedding it in their thinking.”

The three-year pilot program, which uniquely weaves conflict resolution concepts into the traditional core curriculum, was developed by CSU Dominguez Hills and the Whitaker

Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), an international non-profit organization launched by its founder and CEO, artist and social activist Forest Whitaker.

“This is a program that I have envisioned for years,” says Whitaker. “To me, conflict resolution is an essential life skill that is best learned during the formative middle school years. Finding solutions to our problems— however big or small—is something that isn’t always taught in school as a part of the traditional curriculum, but it is one of the most important subjects. CSUDH’s Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding (NCRP) Program and College of Education partnered with WPDI and Carnegie’s teachers and administrators on development of the Domestic Harmonizer’s curriculum. In the 6th grade, Carnegie students focus on general conflict resolution, such as learning about conflict dynamics, creating opportunities rather than roadblocks, and practicing effective communication techniques. In the 7th grade, students learn about peer mediation, while 8th grade students focus on restorative justice. Each year builds on the previous year, so students are consistently learning new concepts, skills, and techniques.

techniques. The program was then officially launched in September, with kick-off assemblies that were attended by all of the school’s 6th-8th grade students, nearly 1,000 in total. As a benchmark, the students were later surveyed to gauge their existing knowledge and attitudes about conflict resolution.

Throughout the first year and subsequent years, WPDI and CSUDH will provide technical assistance for the teachers as they implement the program. Heather Kertyzia, an assistant professor in both CSUDH’s NCRP program and the College of Education, who served as one of the teacher trainers, will be among those assessing the program’s progress.

Kertyzia currently organizes monthly focus groups with the teachers to evaluate the logistics of implementing the lesson plans, and discuss what is working and where changes can be made in the curriculum.

“The focus groups are to discover the challenges of implementing the curriculum, to get a sense of how well the lessons are planned for each student age group, and how they can be improved,” says Kertyzia.

Forest Whitaker grew up in Carson and noted his “deep connection” with CSU Dominguez Hills during a speech he gave in 2015 upon receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from CSUDH. “When I was a kid, my family lived right across the street from here—not more than a couple hundred yards from where I’m standing,” recalled Whitaker. “For almost 10 years, I would walk through this campus every day. I grew up here. My big sister went to school and graduated here. So being with you today—it literally feels like I’m coming home.”

“At the end of each year we’ll go back and revise the workbooks, and all of the units that need revision, if any do at all. Every group of students is different, and after three cohorts, we should have a really good sense of the diverse range of the students, and how the Domestic Harmonizer Program is functioning for both the teachers and the students.”

College life is often filled with unexpected encounters that turn into meaningful experiences.

Such was the case earlier this summer when Assistant Professor of Art and Design Devon Tsuno introduced members of the DH Arts Collective, an interdisciplinary student organization dedicated to facilitating the accessibility and engagement of the arts, to Japanese artist Kaoru Hironaka while she was artist in residence at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica.

From initial meetings, an idea formed to curate a cultural exchange exhibition celebrating both diversity and commonality between the United States and Japan.

Using the theme “My Life” as inspiration, DH Arts Collective students created paintings of their lives, which Hironaka packed up and took back to Japan to exhibit alongside works on the same theme by her students at Kobe Design University (KDU).

The DH Arts Collective’s artwork had its international debut in late October as part of the LA CSUDH x KOBE KDU EXCHANGE exhibition at KDU’s Serendip Gallery. Due to its popularity, the exhibit had a second run in November in the university’s ESPAS Gallery.

The CSU Dominguez Hills community, in an exceptional demonstration of Toro spirit, turned out en masse to support their own. The Class of 2016 counted over 900 participants in their Senior Class Gift campaign, and raised a record-shattering $17,000! Solar charging stations were purchased and have been installed around campus. The Toro Fund, bolstered by the addition of our delightful student ambassadors, had an extraordinary year as well, increasing alumni giving by 17 percent and individual giving by 36 percent.

Making an Impact, One Donation at a Time CSU Dominguez Hills donors are proving the old adage “There is power in numbers” has merit. This fall, in just three months’ time, more than 1,000 individuals—mostly alumni—donated and pledged upwards of $93,000 to support the university’s top priorities and needs.

Their donations were part of the university’s Impact of One campaign in conjunction with National Giving Day (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, also known as Giving Tuesday). Through the campaign, university fundraisers spread the message that if more people gave—no matter the individual amount—the impact of one person’s donation could be magnified and have a greater impact than a single, large gift.

The campaign set an ambitious goal—raise $101,101 for the university’s Toro Fund by Giving Tuesday. While the campaign was just shy of that amount, Andre Khachaturians, senior director for Annual Giving & Advancement Services, notes the campaign was still a huge success, and raised $108,000 by Dec. 31.

“We saw so many more alumni, parents, faculty, and staff who have never given or engaged with us before step up and make their impact. Those who were steadfast supporters also resoundingly got behind the campaign,” he says.

Donations to the Toro Fund are unrestricted and become the primary means of support for the university’s greatest needs, including initiatives not backed by student fees or state funding.

The fund helps provide scholarship support for students, research or teaching assistance for faculty, and construction of world-class facilities.

Student ambassadors in the Toro Call Center play an important role in the success of any fundraising campaign and were

instrumental in garnering support from so many alumni for the Impact of One campaign. In their calls to alumni, they share first-hand stories about the impact giving has on the university, explains Hillary Griffin, annual campaigns analyst.

“It’s great that student ambassadors can share the ways gifts are used to improve the campus,” Griffin says. “We explain how we’ve created state-of-the-art classrooms and improved the campus.”

She says student callers enjoy hearing alumni reminisce about their college experiences almost as much as alumni love sharing their memories.

“Talking to a Toro has a profound effect,” says Khachaturians. “It’s especially impactful when we call folks who haven’t set foot on campus in years. The students pump up their enthusiasm to reconnect.”

Even if alumni are unable to make monetary gifts, student ambassadors share other ways they can support the university. “I always like to tell alumni that if they can’t give their treasure they can give their time, and if they aren’t able to give their time, they can give their talent by coming back as a guest speaker or becoming active in the Alumni Association,” Khachaturians says.

“That’s why we call our students ambassadors. They are an extension of our university that reaches out and keeps alumni in touch.”

Bruce Johnson recently set up two charitable gift annuities at CSUDH. One of these annuities will benefit the existing Philip Johnson Endowed Scholarship in Physics in honor of his father, Philip, who went back to college after retirement and earned a Bachelor of Physics from CSUDH in 1980. The second annuity is toward the creation of a music scholarship to honor his mother, Yvonne, who taught piano throughout her life and passed down a love of music.

With an emphasis on the Los Angeles watershed, Devon Tsuno’s artwork is a reflection of his concern for the region’s future, and he’s brought his deep belief in community-based artistic collaboration to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Devon Tsuno grew up fishing and trying to find nature in Los Angeles. The trips he took with his father to places like Kenneth Hahn Park and Echo Park Lake opened his world to the sometimes-overlooked scenery in a sprawling city.

“I started to photograph these spaces and really consider why these spaces existed and what the things I was seeing meant,” says Tsuno, assistant professor art and design at CSUDH. “That type of documentation of the environment around me led to the work I’ve been developing for the last 10 years or so.”

Tsuno’s artwork—abstract painting, printmaking, art books, installations, community art projects, and other forms— is based mostly on the Los Angeles watershed. “Specifically, I study all the tributaries that come from the Angeles National Forest and meet up at the L.A. River and then go down to the ocean,” says Tsuno. “So, the paintings, the installations, and community projects all tend to be centered on that location and the topics that surround that space in Los Angeles.”

That also includes California native plants and non-native plants that live in the waterways. “Little seeds from all over the city, from all the different non-native plants, which is the majority of vegetation in Los Angeles, find their way down to these waterways, because of the way our city drains into the water.”

His work has garnered extensive recognition, including the prestigious California Community Foundation Visual Art Fellowship in 2013. Tsuno was recently accepted as Water Rights Artistin-Residence at the Santa Fe Art Institute and will spend the coming summer in New Mexico within a community of artists, writers, activists, and performers from all over the world exploring the cultural issues surrounding the global importance of water. Recently, he also received the 2016 SPArt Grant, which is awarded to just one person in Los Angeles annually to support a project that fosters social change.

At Cal State Dominguez Hills, Tsuno has co-founded an extracurricular art program, Praxis Studio, which was awarded a $40,000 Creative California Communities grant from the California Arts Council and was matched with $40,000 in resources by CSUDH and Big City Forum, an L.A.-based interdisciplinary project that facilitates the exchange of ideas through symposiums, exhibitions, and special events. Praxis Studio buses high school students from the Los Angeles Unified School District’s nearby schools to the college campus to work with four different artists in residence on community-centered art projects.

CSUDH art and design students also work with the professional artists and high school students and receive a stipend. The program includes four youth community

forums and culminates in an on-campus forum for the greater community.

“In my professional career as an artist, the Praxis Studio project sums up every aspect of things that I’ve worked for in the last decade,” says Tsuno. “We are facilitating genuine collaboration between art and community.”

This showcase of socially engaged art is also a perfect fit for Cal State Dominguez Hills, according to Tsuno. “There are a lot of students here who are from the immediate area in Los Angeles, and they have a vested interest in local politics and local arts initiatives. I think that type of energy in our art and design department is really unique.”

As for his own art, Tsuno hopes his work prompts thought and conversation about regional issues. “We are very busy people and we don’t always have time to think about what our role is in this complicated world we live in, especially with things like water and the environment,” he says.

“As artists, we tend to isolate ourselves in our studios and make work in solitude, and that’s certainly a wonderful thing. I love doing that. But at the same time, the most exciting work happens when artists leave their studios and work with the community in collaboration.”

For years, Tsuno has worked in collaboration with other artists and with the community—a form of interactive expression known as social practice or socially engaged art. “It has to do with not making work in solitude but making art in collaboration with other artists or with community members,” he says. “So, I’ll often do projects where people will meet in the park and replant California native plants or make posters about water conservation at city hall.”

While Ximena Cid was growing up, her family marched alongside Cesar Chavez and farmworkers advocating for Chicano civil rights.

“My parents raised us in a very social-activist family,” says Cid, whose mother is Chicana and Native-American Yaqui, and her father was born in Mexico. When Cid embarked on an education in the sciences, she was keenly aware of her ethnic difference; there were not many people of color pursuing physics, and there were certainly very few women of color in her classes. She was the first person of Latin-American or Native-American decent to graduate with a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas, Arlington.

In the decade since, Cid has shaped a career that melds both her love of science and her desire to ensure that everyone has a place at the table in the academic world of physics, and one of her research specialties is understanding the different populations in physics.

“I think that when a lot of people think about physics, you have this idea of an old, white guy with crazy hair,” she says. “It’s an ingrained image of what it means or what it looks like to be a physicist.” An extensive informal poll she conducted revealed that there are likely only a dozen or so NativeAmerican physicists and astronomers in the nation.

To ensure that physicists of color have opportunities to support each other, Cid co-organizes Día de la Física (Day of Physics) for students attending the national conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. The multiday conference draws 4,000 science professionals from around the world annually. This past October was the second year for Día de la Física, and Cid hopes it becomes a regular part of the conference.

“Even at a huge, diversity-focused gathering, it’s still hard to find the physics community. We’re a very small group of people of color. Día de la Física is a preconference event for students to find mentors and to network among themselves so that when they go to the national conference they have some sense of community already built in,” she says. In October, students were hosted at University of California, Irvine for the day and visited labs, lectures and social events.

Cid’s other area of research is physics education. “I study the teaching and learning of physics, and I’m interested in how we understand the abstract nature of the discipline,” she says. Her particular specialty is 3-D simulations to support the comprehension of systems that cannot be

touched or seen, like gravitational fields, electric fields and magnetic fields. “I’m looking into why students have difficulty grasping certain concepts, and I use a lot of cognitive psychology to understand the difficulties that people have with learning.”

This focus on physics education led to her involvement with a partnership between the American Association of Physics Teachers and NASA’s Heliophysics Education Consortium. The five-year NASA-funded project kicks off this year with Cid and other science professors collaborating to create a higher-education curriculum focused on the August 2017 total solar eclipse over the United States.

The NASA project aligns very well with her mission to ensure that all students have the tools to understand and pursue a career in the sciences.

Cid joined the CSUDH faculty a year ago, and she intentionally chose to teach at Dominguez Hills because she saw in her students many similarities to her own experience growing up as both a Native American and a Chicana in California.

“When you have a space where your culture and identity are valued, you thrive and you do good work,” she says. “You have the freedom to be successful.”

“Physics is one of the least diverse of the STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] fields, and this influences who is prepared to join the field” says Cid, a member of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. “There is a problem with thinking of who can be a physicist, because if you don’t see someone who looks like you, or you’ve never had exposure to the field, then it reinforces these ideas.”

There are likely just a dozen NativeAmerican physicists and astronomers in the United States. Assistant Professor of Physics Ximena Cid wants to increase that number by making careers in physics more accessible to people of color.

Gilah Hirsch’s Documents Archived in Smithsonian The personal papers and creative works of Professor of Art Gilah Yelin Hirsch will be part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in Washington, D.C. The national archives was one of several institutions interested in housing Hirsch’s archives, which includes the ongoing collection of her papers, films, photographs, interviews, books, diaries, letters and creative work from a career that spans over 50 years and is noted for intersecting art and the sciences.

Hirsch made the decision to accept the Smithsonian Archives offer in 2016.

Hirsch was extremely active in Los Angeles’ feminist arts movement of the 1970s. Among the first set of boxes she sent to the Smithsonian were handwritten notes, articles, and other materials on the

Los Angeles Council of Women Artists (LACWA), of which she was a founding member and wrote the manifesto in 1971.

LACWA was formed to draw attention to sexism in the art scene. It was most noted for exposing the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s “total absence” of works by women in its collection and exhibits.

The council’s originating documents are statements of “the very first women artist movement in the world,” she says. “And the council paved the way to equality for women artists.”

“It’s really a tremendous honor to be included in the national archives,” says Hirsch, who continues to exhibit. Her most recent show, “Emanations, Radiance, Glimmer, Murmuration,” runs through February 18 at the PØST Gallery in Los Angeles.

At the age of 10, Hirsch received a personal letter from Albert Einstein that she says “affirmed my unusual direction in life.”

Ashish Sinha’s Research Leads to New Information on Ice Ages Professor of Earth Science Ashish Sinha and a team of international researchers have compiled the longest and most accurate data on Asian monsoon to date, leading to a better understanding of how ice ages terminate. Their findings were published in the journal Nature.

Analyzing data collected from stalagmites recovered from Sanbao Cave deep in central China, the team discovered a perceptible causal link between periods of drastically reduced monsoon in Asian and ice age termination over the last 640,000 years. More notably, the data

provides clear evidence that periodic changes in the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth due to the wobbling or precession of its rotational over time results in both the terminations of the ice ages and collapse of Asian monsoon.

“That the planet’s precession is ultimately responsible for ice age terminations is not a new idea, but by precisely dating stalagmites with radiometric methods, we are now able to link ice ages and our monsoon record. Now that’s exciting,” Sinha says.

Walking around campus this year, it is hard for the eyes not to be drawn upward to banners lining the main pathways between buildings.

Featured on them are the larger-than-life portraits of CSUDH alumni proudly proclaiming “I’m a Toro.”

The university’s newest banner campaign capitalizes on the power of alumni to inspire student success and instill campus pride. The 50 banners showcase distinguished individuals who exemplify the depth of achievement of graduates from Cal State Dominguez Hills. To emphasize the impact alumni have had through their careers, each banner includes not only a striking visual of the alumni but personalized statements about their accomplishments. “I see beyond our world,” “I facilitate change,” “I protect the city,” “I inspire young minds,” “I champion education,” to name a few.

“As we began to gather names of those who have gone on to impressive careers, we could see that there were many bold statements to be made about what it means to be a Toro,” notes Vice President of University Advancement Carrie Stewart.

“We knew we had to incorporate those messages into the banner design.”

The banners have resonated with students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus. But they are doing more than generating pride; they also are reconnecting the university with many of those featured alumni. In November, half of them returned to campus to see their banners and attend a special reception in their honor. And more than a dozen participated in college-based I’m a Toro Industry Panels that afternoon, sharing their story and discussing industry-related topics specific to their college.

With the start of the spring semester a second phase of banners will fill the remaining walkways on campus.

has been elected vice chair of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation People with Parkinson’s Advisory Council. The cause is especially close to his heart; he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014, and his late father also lived with the disease.

He also serves as the Idaho assistant state director with the Parkinson’s Action Network. Woolnough, is a retired high school principal and English teacher.

White House as a School Support Champion of Change. GriffinKimber is a substitute teacher coordinator for Meadowcreek High School in Norcross, Georgia, and is currently a doctoral candidate for an education administration and leadership degree.

1980s LARONDA J. MCCOY (B.S. ’82)

was appointed as a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge by Gov. Edmund “Jerry” Brown Jr. Since 2015, McCoy had been head deputy at the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender’s Office, where she has served in several positions since 1996. She also was a deputy public defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office from 1990 to 1996.

PATRICK GANNON (B.S. ’83) was appointed in August as the new deputy executive director of homeland security and law enforcement for Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), after serving four years as chief of airport police at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). In his new role, Gannon provides leadership, management oversight, and policy direction to all law enforcement and security staff at LAWA’s two airports, LAX and Van Nuys Airport. Gannon retired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 2012 after 34 years of service.

ERIC BOYD (B.S. ’84)

has been named executive director at the Santa Anita Family YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. Boyd received his professional start with the YMCA of Los Angeles and had been with the association for 15 years before serving most recently as the deputy district director for Janice Hahn’s 44th Congressional District Office.

has joined the International Nurses Association. She is a registered nurse with 33 years of experience in all facets of nursing, including nursing leadership, grievance, appeals, case investigations, and case management/quality management. TONY ALFARO (B.A. ’16) started 2016 with news that he was the only Division II soccer player invited to the MLS SuperDraft. He got even better news when he was selected by the Seattle Sounders in the first round. Alfaro was a regular starter for Seattle Sounders FC 2 United Soccer League team, and he was called up several times throughout the season to play with the Sounders, including during the MLS playoffs. As a Toro, Alfaro was a First Team All-American and a Division II CCA Second Team All-American.

Rose has more than 23 years of experience supporting the needs of community college students, beginning as a part-time instructor of English at Cerritos College, where she spent 17 years. Rose is a product of the community college system; she earned her associate’s degree from LASC before transferring to CSUDH.

has been named principal of Hope View Elementary School by the Ocean View School District. Kraft previously served as a principal in the Capistrano Unified School District. He has more than 20 years of experience as an elementary teacher.

was among the performers of the 29th annual Long Beach Jazz Festival. When not performing, Turner teaches fourth- through eighth-grade band at The Holy Name of Jesus School in Los Angeles and is musical director for jazz saxophonist Eric Darius.

is among 12 chemists named to Chemical and Engineering News magazine’s “Talented 12.” Campos, a MARC U*STAR scholar while at CSUDH, went on to graduate school at UCLA and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UC Santa Barbara. Passed away on October 11, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Her career as an educator began as a bilingual instructor in the NorwalkLa Mirada Unified School District. She went on to serve as a program specialist in the Global Studies for Multicultural Understanding program in the district and then as coordinator of assessment and evaluation. Returning to her alma mater, Fetcenko began teaching in the CSUDH College of Education Teacher Education program in 1997.

DAVID C. SURGES (M.B.A. ’77)

Passed away on January 26, 2016, from Parkinson’s disease. Surges was drafted into the Army right after graduating from Loyola Marymount University in 1970. After he returned from Vietnam, he used the GI bill to earn his MBA from CSUDH. He was an associate business professor at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; daughters Marisa, Veronica, and Madeleine; sons Jason (Jennifer), Daniel, Vincent (Amanda); and two granddaughters, Kaylee and Elliana.

Three-time Olympic medalist and CSUDH alumna Carmelita Jeter (2006, B.A., kinesiology) has been named assistant coach of Toros track and field.

Jeter is a six-time All-American and winner of seven CCAA Championships while a student-athlete in the 2000s.

She is the most decorated female athlete in the history of CSUDH athletics, and is in both the National Collegiate Athletic Association and CCAA Hall of Fames.

Basketball Alumni Hold Court

While some Toros from the 1980s and ’90s may have needed to stretch a bit longer, more recent ballers, like 2010-11 two-time All-CCAA player Michael Cox, may have felt a bit fresher before taking the court for Cal State Dominguez Hills’ second annual Men’s Basketball Alumni Game.

Along with Cox, 21 alumni returned to the Torodome in November to play a friendly game of hoops and reminisce about their days on campus, including Cortney Booker (’98), Darius Butler (’16), Matt Cain (’13), James Cawthorne (’12), Eddie Fitzpatrick (’84), Jair Fray (’00), Brian Gee (’12), Van Girard (’13), Myron Green (’14), Cornell Jenkins (’13), Dimitrius Lynch (’82), Nonso Nibo (’08), Jason Payne (’15), Tyler Payne (’15), Ulysses Ruffin (’83), Lee Sterling (’99), Mike White (’97), Robert Willhite (’12), Omar Williams (’01), and Zareh Zargaryan (’11). Cox, who led the Toros to a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament Championship in 2011, scored

The season runs through the end of February, but if all goes well, the team will see post-season action in March.
