A Message From The Chair The Department of Management has not only survived the challenges of the pandemic, we have have also grown and continued to improve! We hired two new, excellent young faculty members as well as a new postdoctoral fellow, all of whom join us in August. The faculty in the Management (MGT) department continue to excel in research and teaching at they promote Business for a Better World. We hope you have had your share of successes as well!

Top Research

We continue to elevate the quality and impact of our research. Several faculty published their research in top journals, and several (Asad Aziz, Samantha Conroy, Rob Mitchell, Yolanda Sarason, Lynn Shore and Tiffany Trzebiatowski) were recognized through internal and external awards for their research contributions. Our department was tied for 53rd in research productivity among public institutions in the Texas A&M/University of Georgia rankings, and the supply chain management faculty were 27th among similar research departments.

Excellence in Teaching

Our faculty went above and beyond again this year to provide our students with signature experiences in and out of the classroom. Courses were back to a face-toface format, incorporating stronger ties to diversity and inclusion. We continued to participate in international case competitions and other student engagement events. Some of our faculty (Paulo deBrito, Zac Rogers and Theresa Wernimont) were nominated for or received

teaching awards, and two (Lumina Albert and John Macdonald) received prestigious Fulbright Awards to teach internationally next year. We are grateful for the efforts of our faculty over the past few semesters as well as the many of you that visited our classes to provide real-time, realworld lessons for our students.

Engaging with You

We have begun reengaging in person with our alumni and the business community. We hosted a successful appreciation event in April that brought alumni, partners and faculty together. We had very successful meetings in the fall and spring for our Human Resources Edge Network and Supply Chain Management Forum. Thanks to the generosity of these two groups, we will be awarding scholarships for our HR and SCM undergraduate students, and we are working on raising money to endow an additional scholarship tied to our management concentration. We also intend to establish faculty fellowships to support research. If you are interested in giving to any of these, please visit our giving page at csu.bz/support-mgmt.

What’s New in the Department of Management Dawn DeTienne Begins Retirement Transition After numerous years of groundbreaking research and impactful teaching at the College of Business, professor Dawn DeTienne began transitioning to retirement at the start of the Fall 2021 semester. She will shift to a lighter workload over upcoming terms before ultimately departing.

Dawn arrived at the College in 2006 after receiving her PhD from the University of Colorado following a successful career as an entrepreneur. She served in numerous roles in the department and university, educating business and other colleges’ undergraduates on entrepreneurship. Her highly cited research focused on entrepreneurial exit, family business and gender. Not only was this research highly impactful, it earned numerous awards at CSU and in the discipline, including a Fulbright Award to research in Ireland during a sabbatical.

Dawn is grateful for having such great colleagues, both in the department and across CSU. Although looking forward to retirement, she plans to continue her research collaborations with colleagues during her transitionary period.

Boris Nikolaev Joins Management Faculty Boris Nikolaev will join the management department at the start of the Fall 2022 semester after serving as an assistant professor of entrepreneurship at Baylor University. Since receiving his PhD from the University of South Florida, Boris has published more than 40 journal articles and book chapters. His work has been featured in Forbes and by the Brookings Institution, among others. He is particularly interested in how social and organizational stressors affect people’s behavioral coping strategies and well-being, and much of his research explores the links between entrepreneurship, socioeconomic institutions and how we define and measure well-being.

Welcome Sherry Fu to the Department Sherry (Qiang) Fu earned her PhD in management from the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University in May. She also received a master of science degree in organizational management from City University of Hong Kong.

She is interested in seeking to understand the affective, cognitive and behavioral implications of complex contexts, such as those involving changes, ongoing events or unexpected occurrences. Her research interests include organizational helping behaviors, employee motivation and stress and research methods. Her work has been published in the Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Applied Psychology.

What’s New in the Department of Management Spotlight On: Jaewoo Jung We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new entrepreneurship post-doctorate fellow Jaewoo Jung.

Jaewoo earned his doctorate in strategy, entrepreneurship and organizations from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Before pursuing his doctorate, Jaewoo spent four years as a senior research officer at Korea Labor Institute.

His research lies at the intersection of strategy and entrepreneurship, with a particular emphasis on research methods. His theoretical research interests focus on how entrepreneurs overcome extreme challenges, with a concentration on business model innovation and decision-making. Jaewoo also has several working papers that address different methodological challenges.

Alumni and Friends Reconnect After losing a couple years to quarantine, the department was delighted to host an in-person networking event for alumni and faculty on Apr 15.

Department Chair Susan Golicic welcomed guests to the Rockwell Hall courtyard with a brief presentation before opening the evening to socializing over hors d’oeuvres and drinks. A couple lucky raffle winners went home with new CSU swag, and we were reminded of the value of face-to-face interaction among our community. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend! We look forward to more opportunities to connect in upcoming months.

Business Insights for a Better World

Mary Waller: The SolutionFixation Trap While it may seem like common sense that the highest performing teams spend more time analyzing information than those that get poor results, research by senior research scholar Mary Waller sheds new light on the team decision-making process. Teams that perform best don’t spend more time talking than other teams, but they avoid talking about solutions until they've discussed enough relevant information.

Even if someone pitches a possible solution, high performing teams postpone discussion of it until the facts are uncovered and situation understood; low performers fall into the trap of pitching solutions and fail to share all the facts, never truly understanding the situation.

In “The Temporal Phase Structure of Team Interaction Asymmetric Information Distribution: The Solution Fixation Trap,” Mary and her coauthors placed teams into a simulation of a Mount Everest expedition faced with a critical challenge, then recorded and analyzed their discussions. Her research gives managers new insight on keeping teams functioning efficiently - paradoxically, some may say – spending more time in discussion of facts before creating and choosing a solution.

Tom Dean: Reviewing 25 Years of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship Social and environmental entrepreneurship can provide solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. Professor Tom Dean examined 25 years of academic publication on the topics to better understand how social entrepreneurs and environmental entrepreneurs can learn from one another’s tactics in “Entrepreneurship for the Public Good: A Review, Critique, and Path Forward for Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship Research.”

Drawing on a qualitative review of scholarly articles published between 1994 and 2019, Tom identified convergent development of literature surrounding both fields. Comparisons between the types of entrepreneurism yielded opportunities to create a framework to promote collaboration between the two fields, while ultimately proposing how the two disciplines can be integrated. The article argues that such an integration can enable entrepreneurship research to fulfill its promise of understanding how and when entrepreneurial action contributes to the public good.

Tiffany Trzebiatowski: Managing the Double Bind in the Board Room

Logistics Managers’ Index Provides Insight in COVID-19 Impacts

In a hard-to-get glimpse into the internal workings of corporate board rooms, assistant professor Tiffany Trzebiatowski found that women who become directors continue to balance the demands of gender stereotypes against needs for leadership to project authority and competence. That struggle, known as the double bind, leads female board members to alter their communication tactics based on the type of interaction they share with male board members, her research discovered.

As COVID-19 wreaked havoc on global supply chains, the Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI), provided supply chain professionals insight into the volatility that’s led to fluctuating costs and decreases in capacity over the past two years. In addition to helping logistics professionals, the LMI was an important tool for helping understand the pandemic’s impacts on the economy.

Access to board members is extremely difficult for researchers to secure, but Tiffany found a novel route to connect with business leaders: She reached out to chapter leaders of the Women Corporate Directors Foundation to find directors willing to sit for one-hour interviews. Tiffany and her coauthors then analyzed responses, coding responses, ultimately determining that successful female directors use warmth-based tactics such as asking and connecting with peers to diversify points of view on the board. They use tactics associated with authority, asserting their opinion and qualifying ideas based on their experience, to amplify other board members’ positions. Neutral tactics that included waiting and checking were best used when seeking additional information.

The LMI is produced by the department’s Zac Rogers in collaboration with faculty from four other research institutions in conjunction with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. The LMI has proven itself to be highly predictive of future economic activity by indexing the growth or contraction in key logistics measures: inventory levels and costs as well as capacity, utilization and prices of warehousing and transportation. With performance of the service sector supported by logistics, the LMI has been embraced by business publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNBC and FreightWaves as a leading indicator of the United States’ economy.

Human Resources

Human Resources Edge Network Focuses on Partnerships and Sustainability As companies faced ongoing challenges posed by shifts in the labor market following COVID-19, the Human Resource Edge Network provided professionals with information to address new complications. The fall meeting, held Nov 5, focused on building and strengthening partnerships, with presentations that explored teamwork on levels that stretched from the C-suite to collaborations between faculty and business owners as well as how the CSU Center for Ethics and Human rights leveraged partnerships with local businesses and nonprofit organizations. In the fall meeting, Tiffany Trzebiatowski (faculty) and Teresa Roche (HR Executive for the City of Fort Collins) along with two students, presented on a partnership in which students conducted field research for the city of Fort Collins.

The Network’s theme pivoted to sustainability for its April 8 meeting, which was anchored by a presentation focusing on the Impact MBA program, which prepares tomorrow’s leaders to address social, environmental and economic challenges of the future. Assistant Dean and Director of Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives, Patrice Palmer spoke about identity-based leadership and how authenticity helps lead teams, while recent alumni and students spoke to strategies on increasing diversity in the HR concentration.

Canvas Credit Union Turns to Capstone Students Students in the Strategic Human Resources capstone course devoted their spring semester to a consulting project with Canvas Credit Union.

Students visited the company’s Thornton branch, where they learned about its vision and goals from branch employees, and, later, executives visited the classroom to discuss their approach to change management and data practices.

These meetings formed the foundation for the class’s consulting project, which focused on developing retention solutions that addressed high turnover in frontline positions. Students closed the semester presenting their findings and retention plans to Canvas leadership.

Human Trafficking Symposium Addresses Micro, Macro Issues

Consulting Practicum Connects Students, Community

More than 1,000 participants engaged with programming that focused on how trafficking is a global and local issue at the 2022 Northern Colorado Human Trafficking Symposium. The conference, which was held virtually Feb 17-18, brought together students, faculty and community members, and featured speakers that included survivor leaders, allies, and advocates.

“I think taking this course is one of the best things I did in my college career,” a student reflected on their experience in the Consulting Practicum course.

The symposium’s theme was “Empowering the Global Frontlines,” motivated by the acknowledgement that trafficking disrupts and destabilizes the health, security and well-being of individuals and communities across continents, countries and counties. Attendees and presenters at the symposium included individuals from across the world, including Uganda, India, Bolivia, Mexico and Brazil, and from across the United States.

Attendees chose from three tracks. An awareness and education track taught attendees how to fight human trafficking. Many industry attendees participated in the professional and advanced training track, which focused on detecting, preventing and fighting trafficking in their professional roles. Finally, the research track highlighted innovative quantitative and qualitative research in human trafficking and other contemporary forms of slavery.

The course provides groups of students the opportunity to partner with large corporations, small- to mediumsized companies, nonprofits and organizations to address real-world business challenges. Over its threeyear history, it has worked with companies as diverse as Agronometrics, Otter Products, Meals on Wheels, Jackson County public programs and more than 20 other organizational partners. Each student team worked on a specific project, such as sustainability dashboard to measure carbon footprint of a firm’s products, creating a go-forward plan for a not-for-profit facing inflationary pressures, developing an automated survey system to drive global data collection, and stimulating a rural economy through economic development techniques that respect the local community. Not only did the clients receive business value, but students also grew their business skills and professionalism acumen.

I also had the pleasure of serving on the Dean’s Student Leadership Council and the Financial Director for the Paper Bag Crew. I am in the Business Honors Program, an ambassador for the College of Business, and actively give tours to prospective students as a part time job. This year, I served as the community service chairwoman in my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta.

I also enjoyed playing on the women’s club volleyball team for three and a half years beginning my freshman year. I am very passionate about my faith and serve as a student leader in a student ministry on campus called STUMO. After graduation, I will be remotely working full time at Target headquarters as an inventory analyst and living in Fort Collins! Supply Chain Management Students Shine at GM/Wayne State Competition The College of Business brought a powerhouse team of students to the GM/Wayne State Student Supply Chain Management Case Competition in Detroite Sep 30 Oct 2. The team of Olivia Peroraro, Linus Mallett, Alex Reba and Nicole Greig competed against teams from 20 institutions in a case competition that focused on sourcing and logistics for new electric vehicles. The case required consideration of existing corporate relations, financing and the supply chain, and the team developed a detailed supplier scorecard as part of its solution.

Although it didn’t advance to the finals, the team enjoyed an excellent face-to-face experience and learned a lot.

Supply Chain Management Forum Focuses on Transformative Issues Supply chains have been unusually stressed in the past two years, but the Supply Chain Management Forums took a decidedly optimistic look at the industry in its fall and spring meetings. Both meetings turned their attention to how to use supply chain to support sustainability efforts and take a forwardlooking, industry-wide look at SCM. Fall’s meeting, held Oct 8, concentrated on using supply chain to promote environmental and social sustainability, with keynotes from CSU alumni Amazon’s Angelina Howard and Chemonics International’s President and CEO Jamey Butcher. A forum of industry professionals also discussed the future of sustainability in the discipline. In partnership

with the Dean’s Distinguished Leadership Series, Howard spoke to students about her experiences promoting diversity in the online retailer.

Spring’s April 1 meeting took a broader look at the industry, with an interactive workshop hosted by Ross Valetine, VP of Global Supply Chain at Arrow Electronics that discussed the future of supply chain management. This future includes resource scarcity, political uncertainty, automation and sustainability in the industry. Five student teams competed in the annual SCM case competition, and the top three teams received cash prizes for their solutions to real-world supply chain problems.
