Hydroponicsisthetechniqueofgrowingplantsusingawaterbasednutrientsolutionratherthansoil.Hydroponicproduction systemsareusedbysmallfarmers,hobbyists,and commercialenterprisesandcanbecreatedathome.Learn thefundamentalsandpracticalknowledgeneededfor startingahomehydroponicgarden.Inadditionto2hoursof classpresentation,thiscoursealsoincludesaworkshop componentwhereparticipantswillgohomewithastarterkit. Allmaterialsareincludedinthecoursefee.

DanGoldhamerisanexpertonhydroponicplantproduction withingreenhousesandverticalfarms.Hehasbeenworking aspartofCSU'sextensionandoutreachandhasyearsof greenhouseexperience.Danspecializesineducationand outreachtohelplocalbusinessesandcommunitymembers succeedinurbanagriculture.

Dr.JakeHolleyisanexpertonhydroponicplantproduction withingreenhousesandverticalfarms.Dr.Holleyhasbeen workingingreenhousesforoveradecadewithamaster'sfrom UCDavisinGreenhouseFloricultureandaPh.D.fromCornell UniversityinGreenhouseVegetableProduction.Healsohas experienceworkingforseveralgreenhousetechnologystartup companies.

ThiscoursewillintroduceyoutothetraditionalYang-styleTai Chi10form.TaiChiisatraditionalmartialartthatoriginatedin Chinaaround1100AD.VariousQigongmovementswillalsobe exploredinthiscourse.TaiChiandQigongarerootedin Chineseculture,traditionalChinesemedicine,andTaoist philosophy.

QigongandTaiChiallowforcultivatingChi–orlifeenergy throughbreathingpractices,posture,andbodymovements. Theyaremethodsofintegratingtheselfasawhole:body, mind,andspirit.Bothareconsideredlow-impactexercisesand appropriateforallagesandabilities.

Pleasenote:Thereare4stairsleadingintothebuilding,and thebathroomsarelocatedinthebasement.

DeidreHandhasbeenpracticingTaiChi,Qigong,andYogafor over30yearsandteachingTaiChiandQigongfor18yearsto allagesandabilities.Sheisexcitedtosharethesepracticesso thatotherscanexperiencetheself-awarenessandmeditative calmthatcomefromlearningthesemovements.

Manyconditionsofmindandbodycanbetreatedbyanimalhumaninteraction.TheTempleGrandinEquineCenter(TGEC) aspirestocreateanewhomeforequine-assistedservice:a placewhereindividualswithphysical,emotional,and developmentalchallengescanheal,wheretherapistscantreat, wherestudentscanlearn,wherescientistscanresearch,and wherehorsescanbestudied,caredfor,andadvanced.The TGECcelebratesandelevatesthehorse'sroleinsocietythrough thephysicalandemotionalbenefitsofservingthoseinneed. JointhistouroftheTGECtoseehowthefacilityintegrates researchandeducationtopromoteevidence-basedpractices andworksforthebettermentofhorsesandhumansalike.

SarahMatlock,Ph.D.,isaSeniorInstructorintheEquine SciencesprogramatColoradoStateUniversityandteachesthe AppliedEquineBehaviorFoundationcourseandSafetyand Handlinglabs.Sarahispassionateaboutconductingresearch centeredonequinebehaviorandwelfare,particularlyrelating tolearningtheory,motivation,andequineaffectivestates.

Sarah'smissionistoimprovehuman-animalinteractionsby helpingothersbetterunderstandtheemotionalandphysical needsofthehorseandhowcompromisingthoseneedsaffects thehuman-animalbond.Herpreviousworkincludeslow-stress methodsforgentlingMustangs.Ultimately,Sarahispassionate aboutincreasingoptimisminhorsesbybuildingstrongerand saferrelationshipsbetweenthehumanandthehorse.

ChadMillerisanassistantprofessorwhoteachesplant identificationcoursesatCSU.Hecoordinatestheannualand perennialtrialgardensandworkscloselywiththeColorado greenindustry. ChadwaspreviouslyatKansasStateUniversity forover11yearsandtaughtseveralcorehorticulturecourses, includingplantpropagation,plantidentification,studyabroad, andintroductorysurveycourses.Chadhasbeenrecognizedat thecollege,institutional,andnationallevelsforhisworkasan educator.Heispassionateaboutteachingandlearningandis aself-proclaimedplantgeekwholoveseverythinggeophyte.
