Birdsliveinairportterminalsandwarehouses.Theyrooston rooftopsandscavengefooddisposedofaslitterinparkinglots. Basically,birdsshareourlivingspace.Noticingthemisone thingbutknowingthemisquiteanother.Sessiononeofthis classwillexplainwhatabirdisasafoundationforlearning howtoidentifythem.Sessiontwowillfocusonthehistoryof birddiscoveryinColoradoasachronologyofunderstanding ourstate'sbirddiversity.Sessionthreewillrevealwhichbirds livewhereandwhen.Thesetopics,whenintegrated,will motivateparticipantstoengagewithbirdsmoremeaningfully.

“Singmefrumsceaft.”Thecommandgiventotheilliterate cowherdCædmoninadreambyanunknownbutpowerful entity:SingmeCreation.Thusinspired,Cædmonwakesand burstsforthincelebratoryverse,tellingtheoriginoftheuniverse insong.TheearliestpoeminEnglish,Cædmon’sHymn demonstratestheprofoundroleofsongandverseinearly Englishsociety.ThepoetsofearlymedievalEnglandfollowedin Cædmon’sfootsteps,singingintocreationrichworldsofhuman emotionandexperiencethatcontinuetomovereaderstoday. ThisclasswilldelveintothisOldEnglishpoemandothersin translation,withsomeOldEnglishincorporated,focusingonthe shorterpoemswrittenbetween700CE-1000CE.Thisclasswill covertheOldEnglishpoeticform,thescoptradition,andthe relevanthistoricalperiod.Attendeeswillleavethiscoursewitha betterunderstandingofearlymedievalEnglishsociety,Old Englishpoetics,andadeeperappreciationoftheearlyoriginsof Englishpoetry.

AbigayilWernsmanisanemergingscholarwhorecently receivedherPh.D.inliteraryartsfromtheUniversityofDenver, focusingonmedievalliterature.Whilethere,shestudiedOld English,earlymedievalLatinliterature,andearlyEnglish pedagogy.SheearnedherMAinVictorianliteraturefromthe UniversityofNorthernColorado,withafocusontheBronte sisters,andstudiedVictorianliteratureatCSUforherBA.Shehas taughtvariousBritishliteraturecourses,poetryandwriting classes,andOldEnglishlanguageclasses.Currently,sheis writingandresearchingabookprojectonBeowulfand academictranslation.
