his is a special and significant year for CPS! How thrilled we are to be embarking on the 10th year of “the Partnership.” The time has gone so quickly and to be at this moment, with multiple outstanding indicators of success, is a source of great pride and gratitude. Back in 2008-2009, Bishop Joseph Galante had the belief and confidence that CPS would be the model to strengthen and sustain the five Catholic schools serving the children of Camden City. Today, with the strong and encouraging support of Bishop Dennis Sullivan, that is exactly what we are doing! Over the last nine years thousands of students have become a part of our family and been enriched by a nearly century-old legacy of Faith and excellence.

When CPS was imagined, it was not to end or merge five schools, but to bring them together in a true partnership. We were ever-mindful of the deeply rooted traditions that were the beacons of their respective communities for, in many cases, nearly a century. The goal was to respect everything that was sacred to the individuals and their schools. We always wanted to honor their names and traditions, the neighborhoods and cultures of the families they served. We hoped the Partnership would offer a wider embrace that accepted them into a larger family where all God’s children were welcomed and a wealth of opportunities and resources were available to be shared. Partnering would ultimately strengthen and sustain the five schools. And, with the support of good people like you, that is what we are doing!

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Catholic Partnership Schools is providing a solid foundation to ensure our children have what they need to confidently move on in their education. The data that our children are succeeding is remarkable! Throughout this Report to the Community, you will see the amazing accomplishments of our children. Over the last year, we were able to compile critical statistics that you will find later in this report that show the outstanding levels of accomplishment from our students. From our 8th grade students scoring 72% on the ELA proficiency tests to their 99% high school graduation rate, Catholic Partnership Schools’ students are distinguishing themselves not only in the city of Camden but in the region as well. Harder to measure with numbers, we know that our young people are growing into fine, faith-filled adults with good hearts formed by morals and values.

We foster a sense of togetherness and partnership in our schools. Be it academic programs, professional learning communities for administrators and teachers, summer SOAR programs, afterschool programs, athletics, robotics, aviation or any of our fine arts programs, CPS is melding Camden together by breaking down the neighborhood barriers with Partnership-wide activities. The children cross over boundaries to become friends. They come to love their team and activity mates. And isn’t that how our world becomes a better place, by giving young people the opportunity to work together toward common goals and successes, to really come to know one another by name and face?

The Partnership grew out of the Foundation’s consulting with the Diocese of Camden on how

to revitalize the schools that teach students who live in Camden, NJ, one of the country’s most vulnerable cities. After considerable research and analysis consistent with Healey’s approach, the Partnership launched in the fall of 2008.

Milestones:

First official school year!

Bishop Galante approved CPS and official announcement issued.

Created reading rooms at St. Anthony’s and Holy Name.

First million-dollar gift secured, CPS aquired a used school bus and van to transport students to special events, music activities and sports practices.

Board of Directors formed.

Executive Director was hired in Spring of 2009.

Conducted a thorough facilities assessment of each school. Created a working plan for immediate and long-range needs, like the water fountain! Began fundraising for capital 08-09 improvements.

Installed SmartBoards and seven computer workstations in every classroom and computer labs in each school.

Office opened at 808 Market St. CPS brand launched.

Created SOAR program, a highly regarded academically aligned after school program for students in grades 5-8.

Hired a bi-lingual family support coordinator (grades K-5) and bi-lingual family/graduate support coordinator. Both roles enabled CPS to enhance family engagement and provide students with the supports needed at CPS and beyond.

Formed Partnership-wide Choir.

Hosted the first Dre at the Rutgers’ Gord showcases our child performance, acade scholarship awards.

10-12 Launched Aviation program.

Established a Partnership-wide Instrumental Program, which gave dozens of students the opportunity to play an instrument for the first time.

Received Catholic Schools for Tomorrow Innovations in Education Award from Today’s Catholic Teacher.

CPS Athletics are formed! Baseball team, Girls’ Varsity basketball team, Boys’ Basketball team.

Received SNJ Business People Impact Award for outstanding Contribution to Economic Growth in South Jersey.

Montessori PreK program opened at Sacred Heart.

A three-year aviation participant was awarded a scholarship to atatend the EAA Air Academy, a weeklong Aviation camp in Oshkosh, WI.

Hosted first Education Summit with Paul Tough as the keynote speaker in March. The Ed Summit addressed how to overcome the impact of poverty and violence on children’s ability to learn and thrive.

Hosted first Dancing on the Stars Gala.

Fund a Future initiative launched.

Sister Karen and Christine Healey make an appearance on WPHL17’s news show, In Focus. They spoke about the accomplishments of CPS and discussed the educational landscape in Camden.

St. Cecilia School received a $25,000 grant from the Sisters of St. Joseph Mission Fund to update and improve the English Language Arts program across all grade levels, K-8.

Received official certificate of accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools.

One eighth grader coordinated the collection of supplies for those affected by Hurricane Maria. The Red Cross recognized this response and presented St. Cecilia School with a Certificate of Appreciation.

There was school-wide participation in the Cranio Care Bears-Loving Care Packages. Students made mini bears and a thousand ribbon prayer chain with messages of hope and inspiration to be given to children before they undergo brain surgery. n

Middle school students participated in a 5K this spring and will continue to train with Students Run Camden Style.

From March to November, students and mentors trained together for major area races such as the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and the Philadelphia Marathon.

Second graders participated in the Dance to Learn Program sponsored by the Geraldine R Dodge Foundation, which partners with Young Audiences, professional dance companies and teachers to promote the experience.

Third grade had a wonderful experience with the Barnes Foundation Partnership Program, Pictures and Words. The program builds visual literacy skills, highlights art as an expressive tool and helps teachers integrate art into the curriculum. It includes a field trip to the museum as well as pre and post-visit lessons at the school.

Five eighth graders received a onetime scholarship of $3,000 to Catholic high schools through the Office of Black Catholic Ministries and Cultural Diversity for the Diocese of Camden.

In the fall of 2017, Saint Anthony successfully launched a dual language Pre-K. Students ended the year having 50% of their day in English and Spanish. Dual language data from our partnership with Rutgers showed students are acquiring language skills in both languages faster than in language immersion programs!

St. Anthony’s “I Run this City: Camden, NJ” distance running group (led by SAS alum Luis Gaitan), was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer in November. Five of the team members ran in the Philadelphia half-marathon.

The Christmas tree from Saint Anthony’s was selected for display at Longwood Gardens.

Holy Name celebrated its 90th Anniversary on December 18, 2017 with a Show of the Decades.

Students also celebrated this milestone by burying a time capsule.

Florida Studio Theatre spent a week teaching playwriting with all classes, K-8.

An inaugural Science Fair was held in April. Two retired science teachers volunteered to do science activities with Holy Name families.

Holy Name held it’s 10th annual Junior Achievement Program in January. This program encourages K-8 students to learn about economics and the value of money.

The school-wide Science Fair brought out the scientist in everyone. Robots, experiments, and great displays were all part of the evening.

Sacred Heart’s Admiration Dance had an African theme this year, which was a big hit. Students and parents came dressed to impress either in African clothing or fancy dance clothes.

Sacred Heart hosted its annual Sponsors’ Night Concert. Students performed songs and dances through the decades. Each song had an inspirational message.

FAMILY MATTERS FAMILY MATTERS Families are at the heart of everything we do at the Partnership.

We continue the feeling of family in our schools. We honor family traditions. The importance of family is what the Partnership is all about.

Meet the Caro Family The Caro families made a decision years ago to invest in education.

In doing so, they wanted to choose a school that gave their kids the best chance for success. That decision was to attend Saint Anthony of Padua School. Individualized attention, small family environment and a focus on high school and beyond were all reasons that the Caro’s decided on St. Anthony’s.

Starting with Jessica (class of 2012) and her brother Alexis (class of 2016), then Areli (class of 2016), Cesar (class of 2017) and David (class of 2025!) and Diana (class of 2018) the Caro’s have been a with The Partnership since the beginning and still going strong.

A: Second grade. I am excited about learning my times’ tables.

Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?

A: A police officer because they help people.

A: Graduation. Even though my friends and I are going our separate ways, we love and support each other and will keep in touch. I’ll miss them though. I hope I can find true friends like them in the next chapter of my life.

A: In our generation today, many teens my age don’t have the desire to keep on studying, but I do. My career goal is to be an anesthesiologist because I’m interested in medicine and I feel like it’s an important part of the surgical process.

Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Q: What are you doing now?

A: When I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a firefighter. But now, I have changed my mind. I want to become a professional chef. This summer, I began to work and earn money to save up for culinary school. My hopes and dreams are to one day have my own Italian-Mexican restaurant.

A: With the guidance of outstanding people, from family members to teachers in my life, I am just a few steps away from reaching my dream. I graduated St. Anthony’s in 2012 with a full scholarship to Camden Catholic High School. After my journey at Camden Catholic ended, I got into my dream college--Holy Family University. I received an academic scholarship.

I’m currently a junior in college and majoring in accounting. This summer, I joined the SAS team as an intern to the Summer SOAR program. This comes “full circle” for me because when Summer Soar was initiated, I was an incoming 8th-grade student who participated in the program.

Junior at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School SAS Class of 2016 Q: What are you doing now?

A: I am starting honors classes in my junior year at Cristo Rey. I’m also starting to prepare for college.

Cristo Rey has given me opportunities I thought I would never get and I’ve experienced lessons/ situations I never pictured myself in. It has helped me grow positively.

For the past two years, I’ve also taken on an internship with a clinic, Vascular Access Centers. They have helped me throughout the school year and provided me with a summer job so I can explore my thirst for a medical occupation.

Student Awards— Honoring What Makes Our Students Special The Catholic Partnership Schools Excellence & Leadership Award is presented to one student in each of the five Catholic Partnership Schools. This award is based on a student’s academic achievement, strong work ethic, and commitment to his or her education. The student who receives this award volunteers for leadership roles and is motivated to assist with school projects and activities. The recipient of the CPS Excellence and Leadership Award is someone who goes above and beyond in their pursuit of academic excellence and demonstrates a true desire to pursue her or his dreams by obtaining an excellent education and encouraging other students to do so as well.

I know the children feel safe and loved.

HI, MY NAME IS GEORGIEANNA GATTINELLA, I am the First Grade Teacher at Holy Name School. I have been with CPS/Holy Name for 11 years. I love my job and I love working at Holy Name! Each morning, I see the beautiful and precious smiles on the faces of the children, entering my room, just brings a beautiful beat in my heart. The children will say,”Hi Ms. Gattinella, what are we doing today?” I will tell them, and they grin from ear to ear. They say, “ I love being in First Grade at Holy Name, we have so much fun!” Well, to hear this, just blankets my heart, because I know they truly mean it.

I love when they are learning to read and get so excited when they know what they are reading. They will say, I know how to read! Yes you do, you are the bomb! I am making God look good today, they say. I say you always make God look good, you are all awesome! I know the children feel safe and loved.

When you are happy, you want to learn and try your best, and that is exactly what they do each and every day. How can a person not love what they do? When I see their beautiful and smiley faces each day, I thank God for giving me this special gift, called teaching and I thank him for guiding me to Holy Name. Holy Name is truly my blessing and I am honored to be a part of CPS.

DREAMS OF OUR CHILDREN Our annual showcase of student art, music and drama Nearly 400 parents, friends, faculty and community members gathered to celebrate our students’ creativity, talent, and academic achievements.

Students from the five Partnership Schools showcased their creativity through ten performances at the Rutgers University – Camden Gordon Theatre.

CPS students prepared all year for the 9th annual DREAMS of our Children event, which gave 189 of our children a voice to express themselves.

The Dreams event also included the presentation of 39 student awards to one student in each of the Catholic Partnership Schools and high school scholarships to graduating CPS students.

2018 EDUCATION SUMMIT Safe. Loved. Achieving: Intentional School Practices for EMPOWERING Kids.

At our 6th annual Education Summit this March, approximately 300 academics, social workers, teachers, counselors, administrators and parents came to Camden to learn about the latest research on the physiological and neurological impact of poverty and trauma on a student’s ability to learn.

The program featured national and international lecturer and author Dr. Ken Ginsburg, MSEd who shared his knowledge gained from his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts.

He translated the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to build the strength of young people by fostering their internal resilience.

Our National Education Leader Kenneth Ginsburg, MD, MSEd is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also serves as Director of Health Services at Covenant House Pennsylvania, an agency that serves Philadelphia’s homeless and marginalized youth.

DANCING ON THE STARS GALA April 27, 2018 More than 200 guests gathered at the Woodcrest Country Club for our annual Dancing on the Stars Gala to celebrate CPS and honor St. Cecilia alum, entrepreneur and community leader Robert “Bob” Platzer. Guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, dancing and a silent auction. The evening reminded us over and over that “We ARE making a difference.” It’s all for the children.

Dancing on the Stars is The Partnership’s signature event benefiting the “Fund a Future” tuition assistance program. Proceeds from the event cover the gap between the cost of tuition and the limited amount that our families are able to afford across our five schools in Camden. As Bob suggested, we invite you to come visit our schools, to see first-hand how our community’s support is helping our children fulfill their dreams.

Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful event.

Together, we are working to make our shared mission for Camden’s children a reality.

HONOREE SPOTLIGHT: ROBERT PLATZER Founder and Entrepreneur, P.J. W. Restaurant Group

New Jersey born and bred, Robert “Bob” Platzer is the founding patriarch and entrepreneurial leader for the entire clan of P.J.W. Restaurants. In 1983, Bob and his wife Donna opened the doors to their first restaurant, a one room bar in the Poconos with a staff of two. With the help of an incredibly dedicated and talented team, Bob has proudly grown the group to include 21 restaurants, three stadium locations, and more on the way. Over the course of 35 successful years, the P.J.W. Restaurant Group has evolved to include the beloved P.J. Whelihan’s pub and restaurant as well as a growing collection of other celebrated concepts. At the helm of one of the largest, and most successful family-owned restaurant groups in the Delaware Valley, Bob has been an instrumental force in increasing the employee base and supporting the local workforce of 1,800 full and part time workers.

A big believer in giving back, Bob supports many causes and leads the company by righteous example. Under his direction, the P.J.W. Restaurant Group believes in helping others and supports Catholic Partnerships Schools, The Ronald McDonald House, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation for teens battling cancer and innumerable athletic teams, food shelters, clubs, and schools – right down to his grammar school alma mater, St. Cecilia’s.

Beef and Beer Benefit FEBRUARY 24, 2018 The 12th Annual James Gillespie, Sr. Memorial Beef and Beer event, benefiting Catholic Partnership Schools’ “Educating our Athletes” program, drew more than 350 friends to P.J. They are tomorrow’s leaders and it is incumbent upon us to provide them with safe, loving and nurturing environments where they can grow and achieve.

DONOR PROFILE BOB HEALEY Robert (Bob) T. Healey Sr., a lawyer and CEO who has founded and led successful companies and business ventures, has brought his entrepreneurial spirit to a range of philanthropic endeavor for over 25 years.

Bob has roots in the city. Growing up in Camden and around the area, he understands what it was, what it is and it’s potential.

Bob’s Catholic edcation and lifelong commitment to his faith have driven him to devote considerable time and resources to grow Catholic schools. He has achieved this by founding four charities: the Healey Education Foundation, Children’s Resource Center, Gleneayre Equestrian Program and the Healey International Relief Foundation. Bob considers the revitalization of Catholic schools his major priority. Through Bob’s direction the Healey Education Foundation helped to co-found a successful new model of urban Catholic education, the Catholic Partnership Schools, in Camden, NJ. His involvement with a number of organizations over the years has enabled Bob to keep tabs on the educational landscape of the city. Over time, his concern grew that Catholic education was in jeopardy as declining enrollment in schools was threatening to close some of the longstanding institutions in the area.

Bob decided to do something. Through the Healey Education Foundation, Bob made a commitment to Catholic Partnership Schools with his daughter and negotiated the takeover of CPS schools from the Diocese. There was money involved. There still is money involved. For Bob it’s more than the money.

If you sit down with him and talk about what makes any of his successful companies operate, he will tell

you it’s the people. If he’s said it once, he has said it a dozen times, “if Sister Karen was the head of General Motors they would never have gone into bankruptcy.”

Bob is a firm believer that if you have the right people in place, you can be successful.

Bob believes that in the city of Camden, which has one of the highest crime rates in the country, you have to get the young children at six or seven years old into an environment like the CPS schools or you will lose them forever to the gangs and the drugs. Bob says, “Once they believe they are not forgotten and God is with them, we will have saved these children. We have 1,000 children in the CPS schools. [CPS has a retention rate of 94%, i.e. how many children enter our schools, how many stay going on to Catholic high schools and the vast majority to higher education and success.]

Bob was told by the Mayor of the city of Trenton, some 10-15 years ago, “that cities like Camden and Trenton become bankrupt of leadership with some of their best citizens moving out. These cities would not be brought back by people from the suburbs, but only from leadership within the city.” Bob never forgot this concept. He believes that the future leadership, which will ultimately bring back the city of Camden, will only come from students with the spiritual and educational environment like the CPS schools. So, each and every one of us has a moral obligation to support CPS schools.

This CPS is Bob’s ministry, his vision and his legacy.

Catholic Partnership Schools is committed to strengthening and sustaining the educational excellence of the Catholic, K-8 schools that serve the children of Camden. This network of five Partnership Schools nurtures communities grounded in faith and values.

They provide enriched, studentcentered programs that prepare their graduates for successful transition into rigorous, college preparatory or technical high schools.
